*What advice would you give to a teacher who is in a toxic school? What would you tell your past self, if you've been there?*

Mind your business, stay in your room, make plans to leave.
Big on, mind your business! Watch who you talk to!

Find your marigold (a teacher who inspires and pushes you to be a better teacher - go to them for help when you need it). Don't allow your current circumstances to affect your self-esteem and make you question your teaching ability. Focus on your strengths. Close your door and teach to the best of your ability.

I was in a very very toxic school and I stayed for years, to the point it affected my health. I was young, new and I should have left.

Definitely make plans to leave, find a mentor/friend in your building, don't stay in your room - you need a daily break! My school was great in the beginning but then became toxic. I should have left but didn't. The 5th principal finally forced me out and I changed levels completely. I am very fortunate to have landed at a school where all the staff are supportive. This will be a great school to retire from. I'm sorry you had such a horrible experience early in your career. I'm glad you found a good school!

Retired teacher here, 36 years as a public school primary teacher. I was always in the same district, but had different experiences in different schools and during my tenure worked under 9 or 10 different administrations. IMO, the principal set the tone for everything in a particular setting. I recall 2 "toxic" principals that really made the job miserable and it affected the overall climate and morale of the staff. When this happens, people tend to become defensive, retreat to their respective corners, or become part of a clique looking for favoritism from the main office. New comers are looked upon with suspicion. I requested a transfer twice and it was granted. It made all the difference. Once it was after coming back from a 5 year child care leave. (No one gets that today!). My school had been completely transformed by a new principal and it wasn't for the better. I felt like Alice in Wonderland falling down the rabbit hole. Overall, I was fortunate to have very good principals who cared about kids and their staff. Students can't do their best if the staff is degraded, manipulated and turned against each other. All you can do in this type of situation is to keep a LOW profile, keep your door shut, possibly connect with at least one other kindred spirit, and find a way to another school.

Dearest teachers, It’s not you, it’s them. It’s the unsupportive, cliquey coworkers, the incompetent administrators, the poorly raised children, the bully/inept parents. It’s not you. Education in this country is 100% broken in so many ways. Sorry for all the teachers out there having awful, heartbreaking experiences. So sad to see committed professionals treated so badly when all they want to do is teach children.

Hey Ms. Call! My brother had you last year, and talks about how he misses you all the time! I just wanted to know that you are such an amazing teacher, I visited your class last year and your kids were so well behaved and always had a big smile on their faces! My parents loved getting updates from you during the day seeing all the fun and creative activities that they were doing. My brother would come home always excited to tell us about his day and what he learned💕. This is the second year going the the school that you are talking about in this video. I have noticed this year how unorganized and toxic the school is, especially in how the teachers and staff act toward students and how they handle problems. I hope you are doing well 💕

Why did some people in concentration camps work for the Nazis? Survival was more important than morality.
Why do most people become administrators, because their desire for income, power, avoiding discovery of incompetence is greater than morality.
Am I comparing administrators to the concentration camp Kapos, no, the administrators are far worse, administrators aren't facing life and death situations, they just want their own parking spot.
Let's lay out, I believe few people as pre-college student dream of one day becoming an administrator. The vast majority of principals leave teaching for
a principalship, because the classroom is not survivable for them. The are not
motivated by a desire to have a greater impact on students. Their impact usually is focused on the teacher they rule over.

This is year 14 for me. I taught at my very first school for 11 years. People - teachers came and went, all had different issues. I didn’t experience the things they did. When my principal was FORCED to retire, she helped me get a job at another school. If she wasn’t going to be there, I didn’t want to be there. This new school is VERY TOXIC!!! There are so many cliques. I feel like you did at your previous school. They don’t know me from Joe Blow but had already formed an opinion of me. I would go in each day with a smile and positive attitude. I would speak to everyone I would see and/or pass in the hallway. You would think I’d cussed them out, the way they looked and responded - if they responded. This school year I started off speaking and being nice and when I wasn’t met with the same I stopped. Now I only speak and talk to a small handful of people. I have to get “prayed” 🙏🏾 up before walking into the building each day.

@@yaimavol I wonder if admin or some other system within the school pits teachers against each subconciously? Or maybe its a cycle of toxicity, the cliques form to protect each other but the issue with cliques is that they are inherently hostile to new faces; BECAUSE they are made to protect their members! So it just reinforces the toxic environment

I worked as a teacher's assistant a few years ago, in a special needs classroom. The teacher I was paired up with did not like me, for reasons that were never made clear to me. She wasted no time in trying to get me fired. Finally she succeeded and she was able to get the principal to fire me. Since then I've been in other schools and the teachers there have always been very complimentary toward me and very kind as well. It all depends on where you're at I believe. You could be in one place and be in a terrible situation, you could have the same job in a different location and it could be great.

Toxic schools are the worst! It kills your teacher heart because you want to be there for the kids but the environment is terrible. I feel your pain girl! Two years ago I worked at a school that was toxic. No matter what I did the staff and administration didn’t accept me as one of their own. I felt awkward and uncomfortable every day I walked in the door but still had to be there for the kids. It’s really hard to deal with that on top of all the normal stress of being a teacher.
I got my letter of resignation from my principal through the mail to my actual house. He never mentioned it not being a good fit or talked to me one on one. Getting a letter in the mail was the most degrading and embarrassing thing that could have happened on top of how I was treated the whole school year.
I could go on forever, but the good thing is we both found schools that value us as not only educators but human beings. You’re an amazing and inspiring teacher! Thank you for sharing this so other teachers know it can happen to anyone. I hope you have a great rest of your school year! 💙

I was in a toxic school for 13 years but I didn’t realize how bad it damaged me. I finally was able to apply to be a teacher at that school and the principal shut me down after dragging me on thinking it would finally happen. Once I realized I was never going to be more than an assistant to them, I applied everywhere. I’m now at a school that truly loves me for who I am and I’m still recovering from the trauma of the old school. It definitely is like PTSD, I agree with you. So glad you’re in a safe space now. It’s crucial that the work place and people in it is supportive. I totally relate to feeling like no one likes you or “hears” you. The advice I would give is to NEVER settle for a toxic environment or people who make your contribution seem like it’s not enough. I would tell my past self that there’s so much more room to grow and that I don’t have to stay in that box for fear that I don’t know what’s out there. I can honestly say where I am now is the most healthy I’ve ever been, and it is triggering bc I’ve never experienced that.

I LOVE my new job, and I am suuuuuper grateful for my new position. It is sooooo hard to work with people who are rude, unkind, and not supportive. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings. Omg mayleen :( i literally admire and love you even more. Hearing this was so comforting to me. My first year of teaching was so similar to your last year. I was bullied and treated horrible by the other teachers on my team (except for 2). one of the teachers that was very mean to me was supposed to be my mentor teacher as well. I had a very tough first class, like very violent having to evacuate the class daily kind of class. I felt so alone because instead of being helped, it was worse by being bullied. This was the year right before covid started 2019-2020 (the year that ended online when the pandemic first began). it was so difficult having my first year end that way and then finding out that they were not going to renew my contract because of "my classroom management and parent communication" when they themselves as admin straight up told me that they had no idea what to do about my class and the behaviors. My two friends went to admin about how I was being treated and one day i stood up for myself and talked to them and admin did not care. I told them that I was trying to be professional about the situation as I liked the school and did not want that to hurt me in the end, which the admin assured me was not the case. But i got a call when we were all stuck at home that I would not come back. I debated if i should go back but wanted to stay because of my kids - but they took that option away from me. They encouoraged me to apply for the position, only to be on an interview with people on my team knowing i did not have a real shot but i went for it anyway not knowing how I was being taken advantage of. Not even 24 hours later they told me they were going with someone else. It was heartbreaking and i know the reason I was not asked back had nothing to do with my teaching or my connections with families, but it was because of that group of teachers. I was heartbroken, but I found my dream school that I work out now and just like you said I was looking for support and this school was full of it. It is amazing, I am sorry this happened to you, it is so tough. But you are amazing and I love following you on your journey. Thank you for sharing your story.

My first year was similar. My admin continually tried to tear me down.
I was lied on, put on PPAS, given extra assignments and things to turn in or id be written up, they used all my planning periods to call me into meetings and interrogate me. I was accused of falsifying scores and grades, once my kids district test scores came out my admin told me “there’s no way bc these kids are low” and then took my kids that did well and put them in another teachers class and gave me a new set of students mid year. They were emotionally & verbally abusive to the students. It was hell on earth.. if I could tell my past self anything it would’ve been to report to HR what was happening to me sooner but I didn’t have the knowledge I have now. They manipulated me and I didn’t know my rights unfortunately. It’s been a year and it’s still very upsetting to think about the way I was treated. Your experience and my experience was very similar. However, all of my experience happened during my first year of teaching. I was harassed by my administration and I had o attend therapy after that school year. I was diagnosed with mild PTSD after I resigned in March of that year. My mentor teacher hated me. I hate that you had this experience, but I am glad that you are in a better school and have more support.

I have been in your position, in a toxic environment. I even had an assistant who tried to get me fired. I ended up transferring to a school that I had to commute 45 minutes for. I later was at a school that I loved most of my teammates, but administration was highly toxic. They didn't renew my contract, even though I had been there 4 years. They kept someone who had been there less than a year. I am now in a school that has a great principal.

So I work in insurance (I’m currently interviewing for a school job which is how I found you! Haha).
I had red flags during the interview where they asked personal questions. Now here we are a year later - I quit my job. My bosses belittled me, also passed on as jokes. They called me fat and other things. If I made one little mistake I would get screamed at. The last 5 months has been very high anxiety, issues, and I noticed the stress and depression made me sick a lot. I quit my job after one of my bosses made an awful comment about me. I don’t have a path right now, but I hope the interview with the school comes out great and I get it! But I totally forget your experiences. Different careers, but I settled for this job I feel like, and you did too because it was the only job calling back at the time! But now look you’re in a place that is SOOOOO much better

People who are hurting inside hurt others. That is what was probably happening at your last school. I am sorry to hear how you were treated unprofessionally at your last school by your principal. People need to realize that a principal is a master teacher and not a master of teachers. No school is perfect, and it is always important to find the perfections within a school's imperfections. Before I started teaching back in 1992, I wrote a letter to my former third grade teacher. He said that when parents, colleagues, and principals make work difficult or challenging, try your best to focus on what went well during the day and not to dwell over what did not go well. Thank you for your honesty. Best wishes to you and have a happy New Year.

I’m so glad that you’re at a better school! Thank you for sharing with us! It definitely helps us remember that we’re not alone. I’m not a certified teacher, (I currently work with preschoolers) but I worked as a paraprofessional last year in a special education classroom. I loved the kids, but the team I worked with had a lot of toxic people in it. I too (along with my other coworker) was looked down upon for my age (I’m 22) and treated as less than and as less educated because I was 10-20 years younger than most of the people on the team. I left because it felt very toxic and there were days where I would come home and cry. I’m so glad to be in a better school (same district just a different school) with not only a supportive team, but also a supportive principal too!

This video is so timely for me. 10 years ago I was in a toxic school and honestly I almost quit teaching completely because of it.I left there and ended up opening my own preschool because I do love teaching. I do love the kids. So I have been teaching preschool from my home. I have to move and I'm no longer in a position to do that., I start a new position actually teaching Headstart (it's my state's it's called eceap)and I'm concerned but this gives me hope that it'll be a better school and a better experience. 🤞🤞🤞
I've always been a one-woman show never had an assistant a para or a co-teacher. I will have a co-lead teacher time and I'm a little concerned about that.

I am so glad you found a school that is supportive and a great environment. This is my first year teaching and I somehow ended up in a district/school that checks many of the boxes for my ideal work environment. I am so lucky I found them and I am hanging onto this job as long as I can. That being said, I am also struggling with PTSD from a toxic school environment that I dealt with while student teaching (and I student taught for a full year instead of a semester). Thankfully I think I'm starting to put the past behind me and not letting it effect my growth as a teacher with my own classroom.

I had a student teaching experience like your first year. Luckily my next school was like a family but it took me awhile to come out of my shell….long story short - that school merged with another school because of enrollment and I am having excellent experiences now. Someone asked supportive principal or supportive team. I’ve had poor support from admin but great team and the team helps you get through the day to day. The only complaint about my current school is that our team is K-2. We only have one teacher or grade level. I spend a lot of time watching channels like yours as my “team”. I'm so glad I got to watch the premiere of this video. I actually found your channel the summer after your first year of teaching. It was the end of my 3rd year of teaching and I was switching grade levels and moving from 5th grade to 1st grade. But those first 3 years of teaching were so toxic and mentally taxing on me. There were so many days I wanted to quit, even as early as my second month of teaching. The end of my 3rd year of teaching was so draining and I was teaching 5th, 7th, and 8th grade science and reading and so miserable (especially because I knew middle school was not a good fit for me). My principal was retiring and I begged her to move me to a lower grade. But those past 3 years made my anxiety so high that even though I was excited to teach first grade I couldn't do it without ending up having a nervous breakdown. And I know that I could have survived a 4th year of teaching at that school, but I wouldn't be physically or mentally well. I ended up resigning on the third day of school. I gave 2 weeks notice and those 2 weeks were full of anxiety attacks and days of no appetite. I ended up part-time teaching remotely during the pandemic up until June 2021. But when I got into the classroom in November (I started late this year), the anxiety came back. I've realized that although I love working with students and I am a good teacher, teaching is not good for me at this moment. So I am taking a break and we'll see if I ever feel like I'm ready to go back. But watching your videos and hearing your encouraging words resonated so deeply with me. Even though it didn't work out for me, I am so glad that you are away from your toxic school and in a school that is so supportive. I look forward to your videos and updates on IG. My biggest advice to teachers in a toxic school is to take the plunge and look for a different school. You don't have to do what I did and stay at a school even though you're miserable just because it's a job. Also, it's so important to put your mental health first. And finally, find time to do the things that bring you joy. That's what helped me during that final year of full-time teaching

I had been an assistant teacher in that school for 2 yrs and when I got promoted I had no support and many of my coworkers felt like I didn't deserve it and while the environment had always been toxic it didn't really bother me because I had friends and if anyone was talking smack about me I was completely unaware vs once I got promoted I felt the shift in the energy with my coworkers and I knew there was stuff being said behind my back. The school I'm at treats me so well, and even though they are small, they provide so much more support and resources than the previous school. The school you are at can really make or break your experience. I do really relate to what you said about the "PTSD" feeling.
What got me though was my faith and my family who believed in me and spoke truth to me. My advice would be to know your worth, and know that it's ok to move on.

I’m so disappointed and angry that your colleagues were such mean people! You are so genuine and generous, and SO talented! You are amazing! I’m thrilled that you are happy now, and in a school where you are supported and APPRECIATED ❣️🙌❤️

I totally understand where you are coming from. I have just experienced a very negative experience in a Kinder/Year 1 class. The aide who has worked at the school for decades chose exactly what she would and wouldn’t do, which left me doing my job of teaching and writing the curriculum units( which my current school has been doing for 3 years) and her job workload including intervention with children. Suffice to say there was not enough hours in the day. Added to this I had an extremely challenging student who the aide managed to escalate their behaviour most days. Each day I went in with new strategies to support this student but nothing worked, When I spoke to admin about the conduct of the aide they said I would just have to manager her like other teachers had in the past. Not helpful or supportive. The PTSD of negative experiences stays with you for so long….continue to stay positive and put out content to share with other teachers to help build the, up.

I appreciate you sharing this honest video. I am in a very similar toxic situation right now and it’s really tough. Your situation gives me hope that maybe next year I can get to a better place. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
