- How to create a page of collections using the new Shopify 2.0.
In late 2021 Shopify rolled out it's new OS 2.0 update with a new selection of themes and theme customization and with it, a new way of creating pages of collections and in this video, I show the different options for creating these pages, which hopefully you find helpful.

A few people have commented about the Create Template option not being there for them, if this is the case for you then you need to first check to make sure you are using a 2.0 theme, if you are, then you need to contact the theme developer to ask why it is not there as I can't tell you why.
We are in the process of upgrading our theme to 2.0.
Hi there, ive been an avid watcher of your videos from over a year ago, youve helped me every time ive been in a rut with my site, however this time ive been in the same hole and im reaching out just to get clarification. Rather frustratingly i have come to the loose conclusion that my theme may not be 2.0 , so i surmise ill have to start my whole design proccess again?
I dont get why shopify dont make it easy and just put an option to put collections in collections, put clothes for instance in one collection and then when youre sorting them out in that collection, you can add them to seperate groups...
literally the only thing thats preventing me from cracking on and releasing is the whole make a new collection page debacle, i just simply want to make a page that can hold collections, but it seems like ill need to edit code completely
how do i even make sure that my template isnt 2.0 ---- sorry for questionsm ive been watching in the shadows for ages, so im blurting out as much as i can :)

@wrld wndr Hi, first off, thank you for being a viewer for so long, it is very much appreciated.
1) If your theme is not 2.0, then you will have to start a lot of the design process from scratch.
2) Yes, Shopify could make their collections system a lot better, it is one of my biggest gripes with the platform
3) If you are using a vintage theme, it does require some code to be added and isn't as good as the new system
4) Easiest way is to go into the customizer and see if you can create a template for a new page like I did in the video, if you can then it is a 2.0, if not, then it is a vintage theme

created everything as you said and I can't tell you how It easy was. I saw 1000 videos and was getting a headache as nobody was explaining this page and the navigation linking part. Thank you, man. Now the next problem that you didn't mention in the video was that after the connection page for the collective items. When I click on an item, the page will open all items and not that specific item only. So I was back to my problem again after watching your video.
Glad the video was helpful. I didn't mention that problem as I've never experienced it and couldn't replicate it, could be a theme issue your something wrong with your store, might be worth contacting Shopify support.

I've gone for the Dawn theme for one of my brands really is a great free theme!
Neil Bird: I know that is the route a lot of people are taking. My thing is that I started with the Debut theme and that intimidated the hell out of me, so I am reluctant to switch and try to figure out Dawn. LOL. Will likely give that one a try next go around.
It is great for a free theme and the new OS 2.0 is a definite improvement over the old system.

Very informative! I wish everything worked this smooth. I created a new template but for some reason cannot find it when I want to create new page. I am using Minimal, but want to change to Dawn which I am customizing at the moment.
Thank you, if you have created the template on the Dawn theme but this isn't your active theme, then the template won't be available as it is only shows what templates are available with your active theme, if that makes sense.
This is helpful, but in the end, I just added a Collection List (with 9 separate hat styles) to my soon to go live, Dawn Theme home page. This is what I used with my original Minimal Theme. Each hat style is then clickable on both text and image.
Thank you, the collection list is great for homepages but this is for if you want to create separate pages just showing certain collections.

HI and thank you for this video - so clearly explained! I have a question - the maximium number of collections I seem to be able to add is 8? Is this a limitation of shopify or perhaps, my template (Im using turbo/portland from out of the sandbox?)
Hi, no problem and hope it was helpful. I just tried with the Dawn theme and could add 15 collections, so it is probably your theme. You could try adding a second collections list, which would allow you to display more but there might be a small gap between the two sections.
This is super brilliant and valuable! Thanks so much. One operational question: I am currently using a 1.0 theme (Supply) and want to replicate this by switching to the 2.0 theme Dawn. So currently, my active theme is the supply one as i dont want to stop my working online shop while creating the new shop in the 2.0 theme. However, since the Dawn theme where i create the collection templates isnt my main theme, i cant use these templates for my pages as the pages are done in the editor for the main (active) theme which in my case is Supply. Is there any way I can create pages for an inactive theme? Hope you understood what i am getting at haha. Thanks in advance!
No problem and glad it was helpful. Unfortunately not, which is a little annoying but what I would recommend is that you get as much ready as possible, like creating templates and create any pages but set them to hidden and then set a transfer date when your store will be closed for a few hours while you transfer everything over and test everything out.

I followed every step in creating the page of collections for my website on DAWN 2.0, However I cannot see the new page template on the dropdown while adding a new page. Only default and contact template options are available. Is this a glitch or is there a walkaround to solve this?
Hi, if they aren't there, then you would be best contacting Shopify to ask why those options aren't there as I haven't experienced this.
Hi There, I have a question. your current video shows how to create templates and pages which are linked to your navigation page. can we apply the same method if we want to create product pages for different categories. For example a customer enters a webstore (landing page) and see's there are 2 options men's and women's apparel, clicks Men's apparel and then sees different collections namely t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, joggers (all have individual links assigned to take them to their relevant pages). After clicking a category the customer then chooses which products to shop.
my question again is; should i follow the same way or follow your other video through multicolumn, thank you
Hi, based on your example, I would create the landing page using the multicolumn section and link that to pages that are built using collection list section, if that makes sense.
The pages section in Customizer doesn't show Create New Template anymore. Guessing we have to do this in the edit code area now?
It's still there in my demo stores.
Hey Paul - Thank you for this video. Is there a way to have a page with links to single product listings AND collection links? for instance, we have a black friday sale and have single products that will be on sale, but also want to showcase bundle collecitons, etc on the same Black Friday sale page. Hope that makes sense.
Hey, yea there are a couple of ways you can do it, you could add a featured collection block if you have created a black friday collection, you could add a multicolumn or multirow and link to the products you want and then use the collection list to link to the collection bundles.
Hi! Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial!! It has helped me so much as I have more of a general store with many different categories and subcategaries. One question.... when I select multi column, it gives me the option of two columns for mobile, but since I have several "multi columns", it appears on mobile as two columns, then one column with an empty space next to it, then two columns, then one column with an empty space next to it, etc... when I select "four columns" for desktop, it stays at three columns.. is this a glitch in the Shopify system, or is there something I am doing wrong? Hi, no problem and glad it was helpful.
Have you added column after you have set it to 4? This is done by setting it to four columns on desktop, coming back out of the setting for the multicolumn and then adding a fourth by clicking the 'add column' option, if you don't add a fourth column manually, it will stay blank.
Once you have added a fourth column, you should see two rows of two when previewing mobile.

Now that all variants(Black, White) of a product are displayed on the page, The issue I am facing is that Filtering by color is not working. Hi, I'm not sure what you are asking about as the page of collections doesn't have a filter option, that only shows on your collections page. Setting up your filters requires the Search & Discovery Shopify app.
Is there any way to have an IMAGE on the front page that leads to a collection page? For instance rather than adding Watches to the navigation menu, I want a picture of some watches on the front page and when I click on these it takes me to a page showing the COLLECTIONS of watches that are available e.g. digital watches, wind-up etc. I need something like this for my site but I don't want to add text to the Nav menu I need to make clickable images. Thanks!
Yes, just add a multicolumn to your homepage but you will need to edit the code to make the images clickable, if you google make multicolumn images clickable Shopify it should come up with the shopify forum.
How many times can you repeat the prcosess? We would be looking to have a main header then a collection page then another collection page so we would need 3 to 4 pages, is this possible?
Multiple times as you are just linking to different pages, 3 to 4 wouldn't be a problem
I'm using the Venture theme and have no create template button seen at 1:35. Do you know how I could work around this?

Thanks so much for this! Curious to know if it's possible to allow the text in this new collection to align left? My Shopify store is set for center align on collection pages but I want to have this new custom collection exclusively align to the left. Is this possible?
No problem and hope it was helpful. I think I understand what you are asking and can be done but requires creating a custom template for your new collection and add some custom CSS to the product grid, this may depend on your theme but I used .card {
text-align: left;

@@EcommerceGold Thanks for this and yes, it allowed us to create a much needed collection but it looks weird with center alignment. Do you have any videos already that walkthrough how to add that custom CSS to the product grid that will allow it to only affect the new theme and not the others? Using Shopify 2.0 theme that I don't remember the name to as we rename our themes

Yea, just use the customize option for the theme you are trialing and create the templates in there.
Can you please make a tutorial on if products are a lot to display. I have a problem if I add a View All. I don’t know where can see the url of the view all. And, where can I add a product filter for displaying all products
If you add a button or text link, when you choose the link, there will be an option for all products under products.
Hi thank you for the information you provided. It clears some things. However, I have problems linking my sub categories, When I click on any dropdown menu catefory it takes me nowhere. Do I have to make a page for each sub-category. I have a mega menu set up and there are atleast over 80 sub-categories. Do I make a new page for each of these. How do I link these and to what? For example I have main category Apparal, under which I have dresses and under that I have sleepwear. How do I link these so when customers click on Dresses what link do I use so it lands on the dress page. Do I have to first create a new page which shows all dresses. What about 3 line categories how are these linked to the correct product. Do I create pages for all 1st, 2nd and 3rd level categories? Please clarify or guid me as I am stuck at this place as none of my links are working and there is no one who has a video on this. I like to have a side-bar menu showing on category pages but I do not know how to do that. There is no guidance on this either thru any channel. Can you please help me.?
No problem and there is a lot to try and answer there.
It depends how you want the navigation to work, do you want the 2nd level collections to show the products or links to the 3rd level collections?
What do you mean by sidebar menu?
I have a 2.0 page, but I do not have a "Collections List" option when i try to add a new section. I only have "featured collection" - Ella Theme. Any ideas?
It would probably be best to contact the theme developer as they will be able to tell you why.

Hi, where are you trying to click on the collection? To edit a collection, just go into collections under products and there should be a button to edit it

That is a lot of collections! I think the main collections list page is 12 but if you create a page template using the collections list section, you can add multiple collection list sections to accommodate the amount of collections you have.
Thank you for this video is was so straight forward and understandable! I'm wondering though, is it possible to create collections within one of the collection pages? So, I created a collections page with a bunch of our products (wakeboards, waterskis, wakesurf boards, etc) is it possible to make more collections within one of those pages? If someone were to click on the Wakeboard collection can you add collections to that page for Wakeboard Accessories, Ropes, Handles, etc.? Hope that makes sense!

@@EcommerceGold Okay, that makes sense. I guess I am wondering instead of putting that link in the main menu is there a way to put it within the collection? So having the subcollection within the collection. It might be more complicated to do with what I am thinking. What I am thinking to do is have a menu called "Gear" and when you click on that it brings up a page with all the specific collections (wakeboards, waterskis, etc) and then when you go into wakeboards it brings up all the wakeboard products, but also has a link to the collections for the accessories.
I'm not sure if I've got this right but you want to add the collections list section to the bottom of a collections page?

I'm not sure why they are not there as I've tried this with all versions of the dawn theme. If your store is using a 2.0 theme then the options should be there.

Every single tutorial leaves out the only thing I’m searching for.
This is: can all products view within a collection also include another collection page in that same view?
Watches page: a collection page showing all watches, but I have one watch item which has many different variables. So many variables it needs it’s own collection. Let’s call this, Trendy-Extensive-Variable-Watch.
I would like to show all watches on one page, but for this Trendy-Watch I’d like to be able to see the general idea of the watch on this all watches collection page, but when I click on it, instead of showing me the single watch, it opens to a page of collections for the Trendy-Extensive-Variable-Watch..
It seems the two options are,
* All collection products on one page
* a group of collections in one page
But I can’t have it mixed.
Why would no one want this? Why is this silenced on every tutorial? It’s so disappointing!
I wouldn't say it is silenced, it is just not a common request, which is why it hasn't been covered.
There are a couple of ways you could probably achieve it by adding one of the following to a collections page:
1) Using the multicolumn section and linking it to the Trendy-Extensive-Variable-Watch product page
2) Use the image and text section, linking the button to the Trendy-Extensive-Variable-Watch product page
3) Use the featured product section, which allows people to buy it directly from the page or click through to see the full product listing

Well it is difficult to explain. I will follow up you suggestions and see if this finds a solution.
It is difficult to explain, I would ultimately just like the Trendy-Watch just to press my visually as an option with all products but when you click it (coz it’s similar to what you’re after) - you see the whole range of options it has.
I want the Trendy watch to be a part of all products, but when buyer hits this option then they can go into the portal of options with this watch.
It is so tricky learning this, but I’d like to improve skills and will investigate. I really appreciate your consideration , thank you!!

Just don’t add a link to the page on your site and just send the url in the email
my collections are not showing up. Only the home page and I even edited the website to add collections and it still isnt appearing which means I cant add products to the collections. And it is not easier, it used to be easy years ago now its not
I don't know why your collections aren't showing up unless you haven't made them available for your online store? Not sure what you mean by only the home page? It is easier than the method I showed in another video for the vintage themes.
I love your videos, but I have a major issue: I have 3 products of ONE collection and when I assign an image for the collection and click "save" ALL THREE PRODUCTS show up rather than the ONE IMAGE that represents the collection. What I end up with is 3 of one product taking up an entire row.

@@EcommerceGold First, thanks for your response lol! I just posted the comment hoping someone would know the answer not expecting you to respond! I was just that frustrated. What I did was put 3 rows of "featured collections". 4 blocks in each to show case 12 products. I created a collection and assigned an Image to the collection. I then added 3 mugs. Clicked save, went back to my home page and rather then the image picked for the ENTIRE collection, all THREE mugs appeared on my home page, running across the page. What I wanted was to be able to CLICK on ONE COLLECTION IMAGE and have that image take you to the products in that collection. I hope I was clear.
No problem, I always try and respond to comments, especially if people are having issues. If you want people to click on an image that takes them through to all the products in the section, you need to use the Collections List section instead of the Featured Collections. The featured collections will show all the products in the collection and clicking on them will take them through to the product page, hope that makes sense?

I would like to know, how to remove on my main page of collection (not in the top menu) the individuel collection of my product ? exemple : I have a collection of candles and in this collection a have 3 companies. In my main page collection each company also appears. So there are 2 times my products displayed differently.
Do you mean the collection list page?
@@EcommerceGold the main collection where all my collections appear automatically sync with my items list. But I created a collection page to categorize my different product companies in the same collection, it worked. But in addition, each company also appears individually outside of my collection as it probably syncs to my collections page as well. I must not have done something wrong. I don't know if it's clearer? I can't find the information.

Not much clearer I'm afraid. If you create a collection, it will automatically show on the collections list page as this page lists every collection that is active on your site, you can't hide collections from the collections list page.

When are you going to update the video? version 11.0.0 is now out
OS 2.0 was the framework update which added a new customizer and Shopify is still using and will be for the foreseeable future, no matter what version theme you are using and as what I show in this video still works, probably not for a while yet

I try to add a feature collection so that on the page you could see all the prodcuts in the collection except every time I do this and choose the collection I don't see the products it just says "example product title" . Can anyone help? I am about ready to whip my laptop into the wall
I hope your laptop hasn't met the wall yet.
With the featured collection, you need to select what collection you want to display, so add the collection section and click on it to bring up all the options and there is a button just below the description text box that says select collection, click on that and choose which collection you want to be displayed.
@@EcommerceGold Thank you so much for answering me. Laptop is still alive...for now! I did exactly what you said in the comment and select the collection I want (right now there is only 1 since I am still setting up) and it still won't display the collection and says "example product title" even though I have 5 items in the collection when I look at the collection to double check. I don't know whats going on but I can't set up my store
I also just tried changing the theme back to dawn, the one it came with, to see if it is the theme that is the problem and it's not. It still does the same thing! I've also deleted the collection and redid it many times and it still does the same problem!
Are your products set to active? As I just tried adding a featured collection where the products were all drafts and example product title box was still there.
@@EcommerceGold So I went and double checked, it did say active but when I clicked on the product it said active for point of sale, not to online store. Once I set it to online store, it has fixed the problem! Thanks so much for helping me with this and sticking through :)

Set it as hidden, save the page and an option to preview it will appear.

Go into your edit page and it will be in the top right
@@EcommerceGold I'm sorry but I cant find any type of button like that...every page I create wont appear even when I check the "show invisible" on pages list
It's not really a button but a section with two options for Visible or Hidden, if you can't see the section or find them, then you need to contact Shopify support

go into the code editor and under templates, you should see page.templatename.json and just delete the template you want

Great video. My Products are grouped into main categories and then cascading sub-sub-sub-....categories.
Example your demo has:
o Main categories (Watches, Rings);
o Sub-categories (Watches - Automatic, Digital, Quartz ),
o What if we have another Sub-sub-categories (Digital - Smart Watches, Sports, Health Monitoring.);
o Sub-sub-sub-categories (Sports Watches - Motor Racing, Triathlon, Swimming);
o Sub-sub-sub-sub-Categories (and so on...........);
o How do you go about creating categories and cascading sub-categories?
Did you use Shopify "Dawn" template in your demo?
Thank you and yes I was using the Dawn theme.
You can just rinse and repeat the process of creating multiple pages using the multicolumn section, with your final page being the shopify collection pages.
I would be careful about using too many sub-collections though as you want to minimise the number of pages your customer needs to click through.
