One of only 3 riders to ever win a sprint stage, mountain stage and TT stage in one TdF. The other two were Eddy Merckx in 1974 and Bernard Hinault in 1979.
This new generation of riders has ushered in a golden age. They all race so positively, so aggressively, and yet remain such terrific sportsmen and spokesmen off the bike.
Pog is the overal best. When you compete for the win in the hardest stage race and are able to beat MvdP and WvA in tour of flanders you are the best. Though I wonder if WvA might be able to win the TdF if the stages are relatively flat.
The circuit was NOT designed for smaller guys. If you look at the top 6 except Pogacar all the riders are big powerful guys. Hats off to Pogacar for that result. Like he said in his interview, the hills were not long enough for him to drop anybody and yet he endured till the end to place third.

Just picturing the scene of MVDP knocking on the door of an elderly Scottish couple’s cottage and asking if he can use their toilet. Brings to mind Craig David breaking down on tour in Bo Selecta. Absolute scenes 😂😂😂
The difference between MVDP and WVA is most definitely tactical more than ability.... I think we are blessed to see these two incredible riders battle the way they do. As a WVA fan I would like to see the gap in results not so wide and honestly MVDP is usually standing on the top step when WVA is on the next step, like this year in the CX and Road Worlds..... I am starting to believe MVDP is WVA's kryptonite.
Tactically MVDP has been very strong this year, although he has done a lot of work in breakaways and has attacked a lot in some races (e.g. Paris-Roubaix, where WVA was the complete opposite). However, it’s not the tactics that seem to make all the difference, it’s mostly the legs. This world championship is the perfect example of that. Although MVDP wasn’t excessive in attacking and doing work in breakaways, he did do quite a lot, while WVA was very conservative. In addition, his decisive attack proved how much better he was: his superior explosiveness to drop everyone and after that by distancing them by so much WVA is incredible, but in this type of races, MVDP simply seems to be better ability-wise, unless he has an off-day. In long sprints after a stage that wasn’t too hard, long climbs and time trial’s, WVA seems to better in terms of ability though
They had very different preparation for the Worlds. Van Aert had team duties at the Tour. In the spring, Wout beat Van Der Poel repeatedly during the Cyclocross season. They are very closely matched, in my opinion.
@@ds6914 wout won the field sprint on the Champs against the best sprinters in the world. that was a very short effort. he’s pretty good at short efforts.
In terms of the podium and spectacular racing this will probably be one of the most memorable WC's ever. Indeed this is a super generation of racers, not only the ones on podium!
MVDP the MVP 🏆I noticed him all torn down the side coming round on the last lap but with a bigger lead,I was standing there scratching my head wondering, like huh ?? 🤣 what a legend 💪👏
Definitely a worthy course. You've only got to look at the riders in the top ten to see it was a hard and very selective parcours, which has produced a deserving champion. I agree with Dan though, the course type should vary from year to year to enable the best rider of each type a chance at the rainbow stripes at least once in their career.
Also agree with Dan, every type of road racer should have an opportunity to realistically win the WC. I'm relatively new to the sport, how many categories of parkour would you like to see and what would they be?
@@steveeb9567Crashes happen on straight roads too. Often when the course isn't hard enough to make a selection to reduce the peloton. Whatever else this course was, it was certainly selective. As others have said, crashes happen in racing.
Lol...every so often you'll see video of _Extremely Desperate_ riders diving into the RV's of spectators on mountain climbs. (The term "explosive" comes to mind....)
As a cycling fan these years are certainly very entertaining and a joy to watch. The thing that standa out for me that there are a lot of top guys that do not just focus on a specific type of races but can win nearly anywhere. When did grand tour winners become world champions or win monuments on cobble stones? When did green jerseys win mountain stages and time trials? When did riders dominate cyclo cross and road? The other fantastic ingredient for our current era is the hunger for wins and an attacking race approach. Sure, we still have controlling teams, but an attack these days even makes the best squad think twice. Sure, classics always had their dynamics and grand tour winners have won monuments before, but what we are witnessing at the moment is something I have not seen in my 30 years of following cycling.
The moment Mathieu attacked and opened 10 sec gap it was over. Nobody catches an on form MvdP on this type of course. And Pog the Legend beating Mads in a sprint…😂😂 What a time to be a fan of cycling.
As somebody who races a lot of crits, it’s cool to see the fanbase growing. With that being said, I love road racing more than crits, but when the choice is “race crit or don’t race at all” I’m going to choose crit racing.
I loved every minute of this race once the circuits started. If this was the best WC podium ever, I think that was produced by the best course ever. The constant brakes and accelerations required for all of the corners was more attritional that the multiple short steep climbs of classics courses resulted in only the best surviving to contest the finish. And a bit of rain on uneven city street surfaces added a bit more drama.
It feels weird to say, but Van Aert needs a new team. Having to play a helper role for Jonas at the tour, and such a pivotal one at that, takes away the slight edge that he needs to beat the likes of MVDP in the biggest one day races
He has reaped the benefits of being with the top team in the sport, had a support cast to help him at the classics and monument's and now he needs to jump ship? MVP spent his tour as a lead out man. Wout also left the tour early. He also feathered his nest picking and choosing what stages he wants to win and not support Jonas so I disagree.
@@Banjoman-p7t MVDP led out in the sprint stages... Wout was helping Jonas out on most stages..... mountains or protecting him on the flat stages.... there is a difference....the original post is correct.... it does dull Wout a bit when he is the exemplary teammate from helping Christophe in the early races to helping Jonas in the Tour.... I don't think he should switch teams though, as you correctly point out, he does have the support in the races he targets from the rest of Jumbo Visma.
@TheSlowoldman Wout doesn't need to change teams at all. The problem is that if he comes against Mathieu, he has to race smarter. Yesterday again, he did too much work at a time when it was not needed to do at all. It's not in his DNA, but he needs to be more of a wheelsucker in this kind of race. That's what he did in this year's Paris- Roubaix, and it would have probably worked until he got that flat tire. He needs to expect that Mathieu throws everything on the table at a point in the race, and to counter that, he has to ride more conservatively! Sure, it will give him a better chance to respond, although it's still not certain he can follow because of the explosiveness of Mathieu! Playing the game of working less because he has teammates behind, just being more of a killer and waiting for the right time and not spending energy when it's not necessary! He needs to make that click in his head and come up a with new plan if he wants to change that because at this moment of time Mathieu is having his number! He has to be more of a basterd and less of a gentleman during his races!
@@TimCeulemans-dx9ux I absolutely agree, and I think you misread my post. I don't think he needs to switch teams. If you look at older GCN videos I say exactly what you say here. Wout needs to suppress his need to show how strong he is and reverse roles with MVDP..... Wout is usually outsmarted by MVDP not out powered.
The UCI Worlds Course this year reminded me off the 2015 Richmond Route. Really sad well never see a sprinter world champion. Yes sprints are boring till the last 3k really but like it’s only fair to give each rider type a chance at being world champion. It should vary each year

Wasn’t there a sprint race a couple of years ago? cavendish came second. Once every 5-6 years is enough for the sprinters. Saying that, do we even need sprinters in road racing? Sprint stages are some of the more boring races. Perhaps sprinters should just do track?
I have said it earlier, i think this is one of the when not the best cycling generation of all time and i dont think that there will be such dense competition in the near future with such great riders. Lets just remember the one day clashes with Wout, Mvdp and others for years now and not two years only and on the other side we have since froomy and now vingegaard and tadej, remco etc battling out on the grand tours. Each race is packed with favourites and high class racers. And dont forget the womans. I am glad to witness this golden age of cyling
Scotland is a land of great mountains so it's a pity the route didn't tackle them. Heck, even the Romans dare not go up there and dug in along Hadrians Wall..:)
I think they should have done more outside of city and then only do 5 or 6 laps in city centre . Nonetheless it was a great day had by all and made me proud to be a Glaswegian. Chapeau MVDP 👏
Great race. Great winner. I have to say that I really like that they didn't have team radios for the road race. I wish that was the case for all races but I'm sure that is a decisive opinion.
Cracking weekly report Dan!!! Very valid points!! MVDP IS AN UNFORGETTABLE LEGEND!! WVA IS the close but no cigar man OR in the wrong team??!!! Not explosive enough 🤔😬 will MVP go to Vuelta for a crack at wearing the red jersey or relaxation till cross season?
I think the organizers got lucky that these 4 favorites didn't have bad luck. If one of those guys had a mechanical like Laporte, then we would be hearing more complaints from fans. I don't follow French news, but I imagine they are complaining about this course. Van Aert summed it up nicely when he said that the course successfully produced a worthy podium, but it shouldn't be a model for future worlds courses.
I really like Pedersen and his style of racing, but was super excited to watch Pogacar get over him in the sprint. Mads already has the rainbows on his jersey sleeves. Who knows when/if Pogacar will ever get another chance at even making the podium at the worlds. He definitely benefited from a course like this where far out from the finish it was unlikely any big team would be able to control the race, or bring it back for a sprint.
Pedersen did all the work - Poggi sucked the wheel the last 30k. Poggi wouldnt stand a chance against Pedersen. Clever raced by Poggi though. If not Pedersen, then i think MVDP will suit the rainbows well.
@lassegregersen3569 yeh he did what he had to. If Pogacar works he Def finishes 4th. If Pedersen works then Pedersen still has a chance at a medal. Great race from all of them.
All generations have super stars in cycling but it is true that now we have more titans that could win on grand tours or daily clacic which is really great for cycling and us fans 🚲
I find the course brutally difficult, and so it turned out that with a few exceptions the best riders were at the front of the line. (3 cyclocross riders on the podium) Regarding the women's route, should it be at least 200km and not 154.1km? the UCI is underestimating women. By the way, for example, in triathlon competitions, distances are the same for men and women.
Calling Pogacar a cyclocross rider is a bit much. He isnt a cyclocross rider. He did a few races back in his own country sure. But he clearly isnt a cyclocross rider who started out with cyclocross etc. Hes never really competed in any real cyclocross races. other than in his home country just to keep busy for fun
Funny thing: during the race, Rob Hatch and other co-commentators (don't know whether it was Adam Blythe, Brian Smith or even Dan himself at that time) were discussing why the Dutch shirt wasn't as bright orange as it used to be. I think they gave the answer themselves later on in the race by 'complaining' that Pogacar's shirt was too bright green which made it much easier for his competitors to identify him.
A worthy course because it produced the best podium and a highly entertaining race. But not one I'd like to see again for a decade. The most negative was that one single mechanical ended the race for the riders, that feels unfair. I agree that the WC course should be varied and suit different types of riders. I also think it should be a hard race - it should be difficult and hard to become the world champion!
in terms of difficulty, it wasn't the course, it was the riders. The riders decided to start going hard 120km from the finish. The technical part is on the organisers, I know me and a few other people were surprised by the route around Kelvingrove Park. I lived ~200m from the race course up until 2020 and still have some strava top 10s around that area. The chokepoint at the top (Park Gate) is 2-3 riders wide, no wonder they were so strung out.
"Elite RR was too hard" is a funny opinion. 4 of the best one-day racers were there at the end. I think the course was amazing, action for nearly 3 hours and great for fans at home and in Glasgow the same.
Joop Zoetemelk and Mathieu van der Poel yessss the cup is back to the Netherlands, both riders also have something with France. Zoetemelk, who lives in France, says that Van der Poel's victory has not only caused a stir in the Netherlands. "I've been watching French television and they follow very well there. He is also very popular in France."
Look at who was in the top 10. Look at the podium. Look at how may riders finished within 10 minutes of the winner (23). Look at how exciting the race was to watch. That's evidence it was a great course.
Imagine how the race dynamics could even be crazier if Tom Pidcock was in the mix. Damn Im still gutted he chose not to race road worlds. He wont be as explosive as that main group but 100% he makes it up in those very technical corners in the wet
His win sheet is way too thin for people to act like he was a shoe in for anything. He is a good rider but this season is a major drop off for him. All he did at the tour was get dropped? One early season win! He would not have been in contention. Obviously he didn't think he had a chance or he would have been there. Nobody turns up their nose at this jersey.
@@Banjoman-p7t Pid had no chance. He can't match the explosive power of the big dogs. He better watch his back at the Olympic Mountain Bike next year. MVDP will be coming for that too. With development and newer knowledge in nutrition, gear, aerodynamica, etc., wouldn't one suspect a linear trend in rider's performance level over time? I.e., the level today is unprecedented, as will possibly the level in 5, 10, 20 years be, as well? That aside, the level and personalities of the top riders these days is insane. Makes the sport even greater, IMO
Just like Moore's "Law", this trend of aero, biology, and nutrition will top out at some point, but I do tend to agree with you that we aren't there yet. Maybe in 10 years we get the ultimate cyclists...until someone winds up with some kind of beneficial mutation.
A beneficial mutation? Would that be the ability to take all the drugs without it showing in a blood test? Genuinely though, how close to a ‘normal’ diet is a pro racers? How many (legal) ‘supplements’ do they take every day and are they available over the counter at a chemists?
Makes sense but I don’t agree. Cycling is an old, mature sport. There’s nothing new under the sun imo, not including power meters (which are significant mainly in longer climbs). The kit is mostly marketing as well imo, a 6.8kilo bike from the 90’s goes uphill faster than a 7.8kilo aero bike from today.
The parkour at worlds should be variable from year to year, extremely hard and difficult to win. Thus it was a perfect course if one judges by the podium. The three best cyclists in the world won. The rest is emotions: "I didn't win because."
It's a unique course but so is Paris Roubaix. Difference is PR takes place every year. I don't think you can call it a Criterium -- too many hills and the first part of the race.
The reason courses like Glasgow are good for Worlds is that they can unpredictable, and allow for strategic racing, giving a chance for a smart attack at the right time to take the win. Sprint races are boring. And if you have a race for climbers, it's just a matter of who can slowly ride the others off their wheel on the last climb.
My credentials for Commenting ? are, I starting Cycling when I was 6-7 yrs of age I am now 81yrs and no I am not still cycling ( ill Health ) Between racing and touring there is/are thousands of miles in these old legs and a lot of cycling knowlege in my old head. *Early Calls on Victors are Unwise* - Brian Smith saying "That's it, the winner is coming from this 6 man break," at 70+ km didn't turn out so well when they were caught, nor did it when he did it again. Smith jinxed MvdP when he effectively declared "There was no way he could lose," _RIGHT BEFORE HIS CRASH._ Fortunately, Hatch immediately said something equally bush-league like, "His race is done," *so MvdP went on to win.* 🙄
_It's somewhat comical that Men's Road Cycling has just one Rainbow Jersey with so many participants and a vast range of races / parcours,_ while the Track and TT niches seem to award a Rainbow Jersey for a whole bunch of OVERLAPPING disciplines like Pursuit/Team Pursuit/Trivial Pursuit/Holding Hands in the Madison, etc. 🤔
Maybe the scarcity makes the prize all the more valuable. Road, criterium, individual and team time trials would make sense. Swimming’s puts most sports to shame for number of overlapping events/disciplines.
I agree and often wonder why there is not a mountain top finish, a sprint finish and a classics punch like this was. Might be hard to organize in some countries but true climbers like Jonas may never see a course that gives them a chance during their peak years. doesn't seem fair. Especially as you pointed out the huge numbers of track events.

@@georgehugh3455 Debatable. Despite its short length, it's still a very hard race, so that counts in its favour. But still, it's hard to consider a race, that wouldn't even be of legal drinking age in most countries, a monument.
@@karelh8858 It's certainly as hard as at least three of the Monuments despite the distance, and, like you say, a great race to watch. I don't think _"age"_ is a qualifier we should put much emphasis on past a certain number of runnings (to your point). If the powers that be want to cap the _number_ of Monuments, than elimination of MSR seems obvious to me. It's basically a 270km Snorefest / Club Ride, with only 30-35km of actual racing. They could just as well mount up the Peloton on Zwift trainers to get them sufficiently tired, then hit the bottom of the Cipressa.
@@georgehugh3455 Well there isn't actually an official institution that defines what is a monument and what isn't, it's more of a term that has come about through public recognition. It's worth noting that there are several other races included in the same UCI points category, such as Amstel Gold and Gent-Wevelgem, both very prestigious 250+ km races, and curiously also a couple of shorter, much less prestigious races in Canada. Strade Bianche is not even in the next category that includes races like E3 and Clasica San Sebastian though, which is a bit ridiculous. Honestly I would argue both Strade and San Sebastian deserve to be included in the top category instead of those Canadian races.
Dan, when comparing MVDP and WVA in one-day races you suggested there are two options to explain the differences: either physical or psychological. You left out a third, and important likely contributor, specific circumstances of the races. And you're making a classic analytic mistake: when the comparative numbers are relatively small, apparently big differences can often occur simply by chance.

In terms of the podium and spectacular racing this will probably be one of the most memorable WC's ever. Indeed this is a super generation of racers, not only the ones on podium!

Are you going to watch the women next Sunday too?
I'll be there 👍 Demi for the win ? Can anyone get near her ?
It was one of the best 1 day races I have ever seen. So yes, great circuit!
Worthy ? Tight turns at the end and the likely-hood of rain made this a disaster waiting to happen.
@@steveeb9567 Disaster? Sure some riders slid out but last time I checked crashes are a part of racing.
Also agree with Dan, every type of road racer should have an opportunity to realistically win the WC. I'm relatively new to the sport, how many categories of parkour would you like to see and what would they be?
Road surface was cheap in places in city and barriers were of the old school type with legs projecting into the course.
@@steveeb9567Crashes happen on straight roads too. Often when the course isn't hard enough to make a selection to reduce the peloton. Whatever else this course was, it was certainly selective. As others have said, crashes happen in racing.
MVDP must be one of the only cyclist to have ever been to a proper lavatory during a road race rather than a bush by the side of the road

Indeed the Nigerian out fit is amazing!! 😍
It’s the world championships- it’s meant to be hard. Great battle on the individual pursuit. Sivakov is also off to UAE.
@@TimCeulemans-dx9uxtotally agree with you, if he lost so much against MVDP and if we have teammates he should wait and rest more
@@TimCeulemans-dx9ux I absolutely agree, and I think you misread my post. I don't think he needs to switch teams. If you look at older GCN videos I say exactly what you say here. Wout needs to suppress his need to show how strong he is and reverse roles with MVDP..... Wout is usually outsmarted by MVDP not out powered.

Scotland is a land of small mountains and roads that are mostly in the glens
I think they should have done more outside of city and then only do 5 or 6 laps in city centre . Nonetheless it was a great day had by all and made me proud to be a Glaswegian. Chapeau MVDP 👏
Great race. Great winner. I have to say that I really like that they didn't have team radios for the road race. I wish that was the case for all races but I'm sure that is a decisive opinion.
That podium is as good as it gets. The best in history. Star studded.
In a course with longer climbs pogacar will have his chance. With his age and talent he will have a chance to be the champion one day.
Legendary performance in a magnificent race of attrition that required patience, strength and bike-handling skills - MVDP played his best hand today

They got a new sponsor that introduced the shirt. Next year it will be all orange again.

Once MVDP answered my question about MTB Cape Epic with ' its on my bucketlist' .. would love to see that, why not with Wout🔥
That would be AWESOME to see!
A worthy course because it produced the best podium and a highly entertaining race. But not one I'd like to see again for a decade. The most negative was that one single mechanical ended the race for the riders, that feels unfair.
I agree that the WC course should be varied and suit different types of riders. I also think it should be a hard race - it should be difficult and hard to become the world champion!
course was what a WC should be
we see in the TOUR these managed stages even on most demanding climbs
this really was a solo ride effort
in terms of difficulty, it wasn't the course, it was the riders.

His win sheet is way too thin for people to act like he was a shoe in for anything. He is a good rider but this season is a major drop off for him. All he did at the tour was get dropped?
@@Morhaw Developing a third leg, of course. Taking the tri-cycle to new heights

Probably because strade bianchi isn’t a monument. It’s a very good modern one day race, a modern ‘classic’, but it isn’t a monument
@@HkFinn83 ...but it should be!
@@georgehugh3455 Debatable. While it's a beautiful race to watch with prestigious winners, it doesn't have the tradition (first raced in 2007) nor the length (around 180 km vs the usual 250+ km for a monument).
