I replayed Remnant 1 again before jumping into 2 and for me it felt like a new game. Everything was so much more smoother, so much less friction and the RPG mechanics felt like they should have in the first one. Clear recommendation!
same, replayed the first one in coop and solo. jumped right into remnant 2 when it got ea, it is really so much better. it just takes everything part 1 did great and improved it slighlty. took everything that was bad and threw it out of the window and did something better.
The puzzles are incredible as well. A great addition.
*so much smoother (will suffice).
Not everything. Gun sounds are same and sux
Remnant 2 is exactly what i look for in a sequel. Takes everything that made the first game great and improve it further.
This guy gets it
How sequels supposed to be! *cough cough* Diablo 4 take notes.
Absolutely!
my question is, did they remove the shitty scaling enemies with upgrades that made upgrading weapons work against the player?
@marcosdheleno I can't say I've run into any issues so far, but it's still early, time will tell.
If a game is great I don't mind a game being similar to the first. If it is a crap game that doesn't improve anything, then I have issues.
Yeah if I’m gonna play a sequel I want it to at least feel similar to the game before it and with them completely redoing how armor and builds work I’m ok with the gameplay being basically the same
The way I see it, Remnant FTA had flaws.
There is no reason to entirely ditch a great concept and recreate something completely new because you missed the maximum potential the first time (due to underfunding, etc.)
Issue is when some games DO hit their max potential (or atleast very close to it) yet still refuse to give up or switch the concept.
Which is usually out of the fear of changing or failing.
Would you say the same about the third, fourth, or the fifth game that is affected by this?
@@nemtudom5074 take for instance dark souls, every game has the same mechanics but they add minor changes each game. Remnant 2 is remnant with some changes. Keep the core game intact and change a few things.
@@nemtudom5074 Yes. Wtf. There are tons of game series...its literally the point of a game series to have similar feeling sequels.
Games don't need to break the mold with every new installment in a franchise. "The same, but better" is what most people expect and are happy with. The only time innovation is better is if it sheds a bunch of unnecessary mechanics or eliminates extreme amounts of grinding, or if it adds mechanics that objectively make a game more fun without overreaching. Changing too much absolutely can and does ruin games for the people who actually played them.
Hell, Dark Souls has been running on basically the same formula for three main games and one prototype without innovating much, and pretty much nobody thinks that's a bad thing.
Dead island 2 did same but better too. Just tweak annoyances away and bang boom pow
I think in this particular case, 'more of the same but polished and with more build options' seems like exactly what they needed to make in a sequel. The first game felt like a 'proof of concept' more than anything to me. It was fun don't get me wrong, but it had a LOT of optimization issues, a lot of general bugs that needed to be ironed out, and a lot of balancing that needed to happen post launch until it became something largely playable (and even now it's optimization leaves a lot to be desired). I feel it was a very good learning experience, and I'm glad to see the second game seems to have taken what they learned and ran with it.
I think having just a solid 'DS3' level 'this is just a good game to recommend to people' is good for them, and this is seeming like that. Can innovate and grow in the next games (hopefully at least). For now, polish and sand the edges (like they seem to have here), and get a proper base going for the future.
Solid agreement. Remnant 2 remembers the face of their father while following its own wheel of ka...But it makes its own choices, ones that matter in significant ways
Just like Portal 2, or Assassin's Creed 2. They were largely better because they essentially refined the "proof of concept" that came before them.
@@noodlekeeper5150 Yup! I was thinking about AC2 when making the "improve the core concept" idea. They could've easily abandoned the series all together at that point. It was good, but had room from improvement.
Well, we all see how that turned out. Hopefully, same thing can happen here. Now, that the baseline has been established, they can build and iterate on it.
I was thinking the same thing when playing with friends. It just feels like a better Remnant: From the Ashes. They had the baseline and experimented with new stuff, and it all feels natural like the game has always been that way
A challenge run you could try is overlord with minions only, or magic and minions only. Just not using melee to damage enemies. I think It's possible but I haven't played the game for a while
honestly that is a nice run to do. magic is op in overlord 1 and fun to do. overlord 2 would be interesting because of the nether shards to control the body of a minion.
Oh yes! Overlord is awesome! I wanna see it on the channel!
People, VOTE FOR THIS!
I say use magic because it could be boring just using only minion's, to limit it you could just not upgrade armor for magic and just use the base armor or increase health or something
minions only is easy, and magic only makes it easier. melee only is the challenge to try. allowing for certain puzzles and objectives that need minions to solve puzzles or carry things. id allow farming sheep or gnomes for souls too.
@@conan2096 that's fair I just wanna watch him play overlord
This is one of the first times ive managed to get to a video 10 seconds after it was released.
Congrats. 🎉
Having never played the first game, this is practically a 100% positive review to me. Will probably check it out.
It feels way smoother and tighter, they learnt a lot of lessons from the first so far it seems. It's a sequel done well imo, if it ain't broke dont fix it just add to it and make it better.
I think an important thing you noted is that Remnant 2 is 'more of the same *with improvements*. Yeah, some QOL changes are hardly enough to be considered innovation, but I feel like it can be a very good thing when a first game is rather small in scope, but after its success, a second can just be 'More of the same, but bigger and better'.
Though I can understand the want for games to change, I'd say a perfect example for me of a sequel just being too different is Darkest Dungeon. I really like the first one, but I like the personalization of the heroes and caring about each one. DD2 changing so each individual really means nothing takes away from what *I* liked - but hey, I'm sure others would love it!
I partially look at remnant 2 as "Remnant 1, except we have a budget now.", now we'll see if they continue forward and if they do more than that for what comes after.
So at least I understand a mechanical retread in that context.
I want you to know, Lemon, that your channel and your challenge runs were a big part of what inspired me to do a melee only run in the first Remnant game. It was super fun and I'm looking forward to doing another melee only run in Remnant 2!
How did you exactly beat the final boss melee only? I thought it was basically impossible.
@@JNitroxx in from the ashes I used the hero's sword, which can be acquired from Rigs for 100 glowing fragments or if you beat 10 bosses in a row in survival mode since it has a ranged attack. I admit to having my brother help me on the final boss, but if one was so inclined they could absolutely solo the final boss with the hero's sword. In remnant 2 I had some bad luck with encountering almost exclusively flying enemies/bosses and decided the melee only run wasn't worth it on my main character, but if you reroll your campaign until you get losomn first you can get the huntress' spear which is also a ranged melee weapon. Hero's sword is the starting weapon for the explorer class as well
You can fist the final boss to death. Wait until they slam at you and you can hit them with melee, no ranged melee needed whatsoever. Prepare for a very long fight though.@@psychologicaleffects4398
its nice seeing Remnant 2 get the attention it well deserves and earns it, brings a smile to my face since Remnant 1 never really got such a spotlight.
Love your reviews, Lemon. Thoughtful and eloquent. Great stuff.
Paid content can't be considered a review. This is a glorified advert and is even tagged as such
@@umairkhalid2222 Are you daft?
Lemon straight up says "this might not be the game for you", he is not a shill and you sire don't know how game reviews work
I love that you are always honest with your reviews, no pandering to the all mighty dollar - just an honest opinion
"I prefer innovationto stagnation" my man doesn't know iteration exists
Yeah, this doesnt look like stagnation to me. Stagnation is Far cry, but remnant took a lot of the problems form the first game and improved upon them, then also improved the world. Idk if id call that stagnation.
The fact that this game lets you Pet The Dog (TM) makes me interested in playing it unto itself.
As a gamedev myself "managing to repeat something at higher overall quality, fidelity and scope" sounds like such a herculean achievement already xD
So glad they pulled it off, and who knows, if there is ever a part three maybe we'll get the experimental stuff now that the core has been apparently honed quite well^^
I like remnant 2 being similar and improving on the first. Literally dark souls 1 and 3 and elden ring is like that too, all gave me the same feeling. Love them all.
The first remnant was a great game and the second one is great also. Really glad the Devs put in the work to make this game bigger & badder.. will be losing hours & sleep to this gem for a good long while I think..
First game was pure trash. Enemy health scales to your highest weapon so the best way to beat the game is to never upgrade a single weapon. Absolutely rediculous.
@@m0rianne holy retardpill god damn
@@m0rianneit's random to put this on this comment but ok also remnant2 has mostly fixed that :>
Honestly, I wanted more of the same, but with tweaks. I'm not disappointed so far. The story is really what I wanted a continuation on and that's been good so far. Fingers crossed.
It’s beyond common for sequel games to be like the game before it. So I’m not really sure what you’re expecting. As long as it improves on what the previous game is, its done its job in my opinion 🤷🏿♂️
Nah nah, needs to be a mahjong sim. :)
He’s referring to trash sequels like Borderlands the Pre-sequel. That game took too much liberty in changing both core and auxiliary mechanics and now the reviews speak for themselves. There is nothing more annoying than asking for a sequel to your favorite game and getting an unrecognizable PoS.
@@TehDroppedBassbrother you need to replay TPS, besides the low gravity and grinder it feels and plays just like all the other games now
It's a huge step up from the first one, IMO. It's a fantastic game.
Idk about huge. Because the first game was amazing as well but the second is a lot better in a lot of ways.
Didn’t we literally ask for remnant 2 to be like remnant 1 though, I know I did. If it ain’t broke then why try to fix it and then actually break it
Yes you're correct and it's why we got remnant 2. Fans were screaming for another game like From the Ashes and the devs delivered it and then some.
@@zaoshikung2756 I’d agree
Remant 2 is just the modern berison of 1 all cleaned up in every regard. Its absolutely fantastic and is what rhe community wanted from a sequel of their niche audience game.
Where it will really set apart will be how they handel the dlc. If we get worlds+ new archetypes, or bew modes like we did in remant 1 with the randomazied gauntlet that gave your main characters permant rewards of gear to start with... well it will be one of the best sequels done for any series
Great review, not just for its balance but also the even-handed, histrionics-free delivery. You earned my sub.
Just commenting and liking to help the algorithm as I'm waiting on seeing any content till I get the game myself. Thank ya however for all the effort you put into making your videos and enjoyment they bring.
I loved remnant 1 so much so I don't mind some things being the same because it just feels nice, it's like a slight hit of nostalgia and remnant 2 just feels and plays waaaay better
I knew i was going to play it, but was curious what you had to say. Really great review as always and I think you might be spot on. But im one of the ones that just wanted more.
Great video as always!
Every time I watch a Lemon video I think back to your Grime playthrough, which may actually be possible with only parries due to NG+, and that game was seriously underrated. Thanks for introducing it to me. Oh and uh… Remnant is neat too IG.
8:26 really cracked me up :D Keep up the good work, my man!
i am so happy they kept to their roots that is exactly what i was hoping to hear
Great review, and I appreciate the honesty that you always have in these.
My guy ur calling sponsored content a review
@@umairkhalid2222 receiving a copy of the game does not equal sponsorship. he was under no contract or obligation to say anything even remotely nice about the game.
@@FiannaBat at the start of the video he calls it sponsored content u can check for yourself, the video is also tagged as such in the description. So yes he probably was obligated to say certain things something I find it a bit distasteful.
@@FiannaBat If he wants to continue getting free keys, he has to fluff the providers of said keys. That's just how it works and why "professional" reviewers can't beat the Cuphead tutorial.
Great review, Lemon. I was hesitant about the title, but when you expressed that your concern was about how similar the two games were, I was very relieved. I really enjoyed the first game, a friend and I played through all of it and the DLC together. Even if there's very little that changes, I'm looking forward to what the narrative for Remnant 2 will go towards given the events of the first. As always, appreciate your honesty in your reviews.
Thanks for the content I pretty much expected it to be pretty close to the first game. Looking forward to playing it all the same.
I never played the first one so I am loving the co-op and uniqueness of the worlds
I think so many f us just want sequels to be "the original, but more of it" because we all have not so fond memories of a series trying to innovate and just seeming to destroy everything we loved about it, Saints' Row IV (or III if your a classic fan) X-Com 2, X-Com Chimera Squad, the list goes on. Anyway I'll have to get this one, I'm down for more "H.P Lovecraft's Star Gate"
Sometimes you just want more of a good thing
Great video. Earned a sub
BTW people at least from watching other footage the bosses in this game are waaaay better than the first game, and look genuinely good to the point they might be a high bar for soulslike games. A lot of creativity and just well thought out attack patterns and mechanics
I agree, each boss is so unique and the red prince has gone into my top 10 favourite boss fights already. Also the cube one with friends is really fun.
@@bighatbenny4922The cube got me tilted the first few times ngl
@@binhvan4893 It wasn't as bad as the postulant's parlour puzzle, had a guy in my game rage quit on it.
But even that three in the row game had so much depth to it as it unlocked the area depending on where your pieces are.
I like it. Even the horror elements are great. Remnant 1 had a scifi plant vibe for most of it, but this one starts out with fire cultists and a weird horrific ghost sanitorium
Depending on which section you get first! I got the sci-fi section after the jungle and had the Bloodborne area last before the final section. The aliens in the sci-fi area are really spooky too, the asylum has been my favorite area in the entire game though.
The second you showed the "space crabs" weapon mod, you had me
Carcinization for the win
Needs a "walk sideways faster" buff
thank you for the open and good review. i will be one of those that just want more of the origianl:)
Thanks Lemon, this was a nice video.
3:13 thank you for that sky box shot that's about the only thing I enjoy at the end game.
Flames for the flame goddess, pogs for the pog throne
“It’s just like the first game” Yes that’s great, I came here for more of that 👀 😂
Thinking about getting this should i play the first one before i get the 2nd one game just looks amazing
with this being the only sequel under their belt i would say it's a little early for the "more of the same" complaint
but i agree with that of course, it's absolutely remnant from the ashes with better graphics, more stuffs to do and a bit of quality of life
that said, i would say the game gains a lot from the coop mode, grab 2 friends and the game it's way better, differents builds can cover each other weak spots and so on, it's really fun
i just want to nitpick one thing
in addition to freely change the secondary class, you forgot to mention that also the main class can be changed from the initial choice freely, as soon as you unlock a class item you are completely free to use said class both as the main and as the secondary one
with that and mutators build variety certainly exploded from the previous game
I was sold when I saw the Rootin’ Tootin’ Gunslinger.
Petting the dog causes its health to regen faster.
Best game ever.
can't wait for grenade only remnant 2
I never played remnant 1 but heard about it and watched gameplay. It just wasn't at a stage where I wanted to play. This game feels like a great time to jump in.
"am not sure" we all know you gonna speedrun with the flametrower its FIRE
So there is a ring and a trinket that work with explosives it would be cool to see a "firebomb" only challenge Remnant 2.
This is one of the best reviews of a game i've ever seem well done
I got a backlogs ad before the video and couldn't tell what was going on for a second, thought the video had somehow gotten shorter.
the style that the series has is good. Chronos before the ashes is the prequel to remnant from the ashes and sets up the story so i would recommend playing that.
I bought Chronos because it's the prequel but I regret buying it because it's very...unfun to play imo.
The thing to remember is that technically Chronos came out first. It was their first game and was a VR game. You can't get that version any more and have to get the Before the Ashes version that is the same game as the original but with over the shoulder camera instead of RE 1 and 2 from a security camera angle and some little fixes. Its worse because they were literally less experienced and were rushed and the available version was kind of rushed out to get in on how big Remnant 1 was getting at the time.
Something about this game makes me want the rolling to be more like the dash from Returnal - maybe the atmosphere?
The roll should have been more like ds's roll, but investing in roll distance makes it much more bearable
Loving this game so far, finished the main story first time with 22 hours play time.
I look at it as taking what the first one did and refining it. I guess I would have to know what you would have to change to consider it 'taking risks' and what you mean.
We need more puzzle bosses like the cube. It was a struggle but fun!
Just like dark souls each game has its similarities and brings a lil different things to the table
Seriously DS was such a good trilogy
Considering the popularity of the Borderlands series, I'd say that 'more of the same' can quite easily be a winning strategy for game design.
"you could just shoot it till it dies" - Elden ring as it hides the mages
Its cool seeing a sponsor let you actually critique their product in the video
I haven’t watch the videos but maybe because I play melee in remnant 2 the game feels like a brand new experience
Oh yeah here we go
The first game was one of the greatest surprises I ever had palying video game. For me remnant is a must play for everyone
Having not played Remnant 1, this sounds perfect.
If the Handler trailer is any indication, your dog can't die. Thereby making Remnant 2 the _best game ever._ Objectively speaking.
If you liked remnant you will like the 2nd they didn't change the core loop alot but it's definitely am upgrade.
As I never played or have heard of Remnent 1 I might give this a try.
Keep it up lemon
Great video gunslinger Lemon
Question about necrons again, which of these do you prefer the vibe of : Trazyn the Infinite or Imonkeht the Stormlord?
I feel like the sequel is a massive refinement of the first game, and is what they really wanted to make in the first place. And that's something I don't mind from a relatively small studio.
Lemon, just wanted to say: hello and hope the challenges aren't too stressful 😊
I think something that needs to be added into the game is an option to toggle auto-lock-on for melee weapons. My friends and I have tried melee only playthroughs with the hero sword, and always found horde encounters really annoying when we try to hit the thing that’s in front of us but target another enemy that’s off to the side of it. I think that would make melee combat feel so much better.
i like that traits are capped now so you actually build them rather than earn everything all on the same character
but i wish there was a smaller paragon level/badass rank style bonus to endlessly grind to for those who want to chase the tiniest little minmax stats that dont reaaaaally matter
something like weapon swap speed or mod cast speed or small amount of movement speed (that a lot stronger but not game breaking)
This was exactly what I wanted. I always wished they came out with more dlc for R1 and that's kinda what R2 feels like.
Once I saw the scifi levels I was sold
I am absolutely loving the game personally, other than the crashes I get occasionally. Having to redo everything since I last rested at a crystal is maddening, hope they can iron performance issues out.
Guess it goes on my future backlog then
More of the same but better is exactly what I would hope from a sequel. If i wanted new I would play a new IP. If i want different from Dark Souls 1 then I will play Sekiro, not Dark Souls 3🤣
Excellent point.
I would like to mention that when you pet the dog it heals faster
I'm happy I love playing this game
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts
There's your test case
The game feels exactly like remnant 1. The instant you take control of your character brings you back instantly. Basically the same concept as the first game. Run through procedurally generated worlds and clear all the dungeons. Game feels great and im glad i pre ordered.
Small hitches and lag spikes here and there but not like game ending or anything. Multiplayer is seamless. You just hop into other players worlds with a quick queue. Game feels the same but fresh enough to where its worth playing.
Boss fights are just as fun as you remember them in the original. Worlds are much bigger now so exploration can get quite tedious if you dont enjoy that. Dungeons are a bit harder to now. Mandatory puzzles to unlock next areas but not hard enough to gatelock you. Annoying that there isnt game chat but im pretty sure that'll come in the future since remnant 1 got it later down the line. Really would help with the dungeons.
I'd definitely give the game a shot. $50 is a steal for how much content you get in this game on launch. Can easily throw in 100s of hours just exploring. A solid upgrade from remnant from the ashes.
50 bucks for a game. Never thought I’d see the day in 2023
Holy shit they are sponsoring the absolute hell outta this game. I've never seen so many sponsored videos
Hope it pays off
Worshipping the fire goddess Skyrim edition.
its improved in many ways over the first that is what sequels are suppose to do...what do you think they should of done? make it a whole new game like a top down shooter???
Looks neat!
Remnant 2 was MADE for multiplayer, I'd say any challenge run solo would already be pretty nutty
Unless I'm totally forgetting R1, it only had basic procedurally generated maps. The entire story, bosses, mini bosses, maps, world order, questlines, etc are randomized on each playthrough and adventure mode generation in R2. This is definitely not a DLC.
Otherwise, this is a fine overview. I would also recommend against starting a new character because you completely start over without the things you've unlocked. You can simply change your primary class if you want at any time once you've unlocked multiclassing.
personally while i enjoy improvment, i don't mind if it comes in small bits at a time to ease people into them. like the battle network serries did.
we love lemon!
Any chance, you playing a challenge run of it or even streaming?
If this goes on sale, I’d probably pick it up. Hell I might actually reinstall the first one since I never did it. It looks really beautiful, and is in the same boat as payday 3. Really beautiful in general, and has some cool shit. Thanks for the heads up lemon!
I think I disagree that Remnant 2 is "just more of the same" because the character class concept *is* actually new and fundamentally alters a huge aspect of the game. Every soulsclone I've played that has "classes" does things just like Dark Souls does with very little deviation: it just determines starting equipment and sometimes stat alignment, and nothing else. Even From the Ashes did this, but Remnant 2 actually makes your class choice have weight through the abilities and prime perk that are unique to your chosen classes.
Stuff like the Medic not really needing a Dragon Heart if they have healing weapon mods to back up their active skill, their traits give them more sustain, and so on. The Hunter is separated from the Gunslinger by being deliberate and focusing on critical hits while the Gunslinger focuses on shot volume and speed. And the class combinations have weight because your primary class gets its entire kit while your subclass retains mostly only its supporting features. There was definite thought put into the system and I really appreciate that!
