  • The song La Victoire est à nous, adapted by David Buhl from an aria from an opera by composer André Ernest Modeste Grétry (1741-1813), La Caravane du Caire, is one of the “hits” of the military bands of the First Empire, executed on many battlefields, especially when entering Moscow on September 14, 1812. It was composed during the French campaign in Egypt and Syria.
Born in Liège on February 11, 1741, André Grétry is one of the precursors of French opéra-comique. His performances animated Paris, even during the French Revolution. Much admired by Napoleon, he was among the first to receive the Legion of Honor.
That march was used as a soundtrack of movies with the Napoleonic thematic as “Waterloo” and the Russian series of movies “War and Peace”.
This video was made with scenes of the movies War an Peace (1956), War and Peace Part I - Andrei Bolkonsky (1966), War and Peace Part III - The Year 1812 (1967), War and Peace Part IV - Pierre Bezukhov (1967), Waterloo (1970), the series Napoleon (2002), the filming of Battle of Waterloo 200th Reenactment and a video of Facebook page “Le Hussard”.

Gloire éternelle à Napoléon Bonaparte, Empereur de France et Espoir de Pologne !
We, Polish still remember the magnificent friendship and support of Napoleon Bonaparte for the Polish Cause: Free and independent Poland and Lithuania.
There's a lot of memorial places, street names etc. devoted to Napoleon and the Napoleonic Army, of course including Poles who fought in it.
There are Napoleonic fortifications and redoubts in many Polish cities, still remembered and cared for.
There is a memory of Polish Chevau-Légers ("szwoleżerowie" in Polish) and chasseurs ("szaserzy") in the Napoleonic Army, they have their monuments, as well as streets and squares named to their memory. The greatest Polish authors like Adam Mickiewicz or Boleslaw Prus commemorated Napoleonic times and glory.
We regret Napoleon's defeat as much as you French do. And we regret one thing: that He was so hurrying in his invasion on Russia. Had He and His army stayed at least one year in Poland and Lithuania, He would reinforce it to the brim with soldiers, guns, warm clothing, food, equipment and everything. It *WAS POSSIBLE* to win against russkies.
Salutations cordiales, mon ami! Vive la France et la Pologne et la mémoire de Napoléon Bonaparte !
