I worked as a math tutor in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. I like this age group. they've been in school long enough to know how to behave and take responsibility. They usually know more than you do about how to line up for after school dismissal and lunch. They have work assignments like lunch person, paper helper, bathroom monitor etc. Also much less crying over spilled milk starting in 3rd grade. Tell them they are bright, smart and capable and you will win them over.
Your videos were very useful, I survived my first time substituting a 2nd grade class of 15 students, here in ND. Luckily the teacher I was subbing for, also kept Starbursts in her desk. Now tomorrow is a 5th grade class.
Great tips. I use my the first letter of my last name. It generates curiousity and conversation which is a great ice breaker if you are new to the school or class.
When I sub the elementary grades, I always introduce myself. I've found that sometimes kids get upset if I don't follow the regular teacher's routines exactly. to combat this, I explain "I haven't subbed for this teacher before, so I may do things a little differently than your regular teacher. However, from time to time, I may ask for your assistance. That usually nips any problems in the bud. If I know students are having a test the next day, I will try to help them review for it. For instance, I may hold a spelling bee, or I'll quiz people on the multiplication tables.
I think you should go with Mr. Luis, because you're comfortable with it. It also depends on the school. I would make a joke about it. "My name is Luis Miranda but calling me Mr. Miranda makes me feel old, so call me Mr. Luis."
today was my first as a sub and this decade old video helped. Thanks a lot!

+Allan Laurel you'll be great. Just always have confidence. It's hard to remember but you're the adult.
Thank you for this; I’m starting this week and I’m nervous!!
Oh and some more advice you gave that works, use the name on the board technique

Thanks for sharing. I started this site so subs could share ideas. Post any thoughts. I'd like this to be our place to share ideas.
One kid wanted to eat my family. Lol.
Evan Kunkel lol how funny
is it ok if the kids call me Mr. Luis? or its better to use my last name?
Thanks, great videos, already subscribed :)

haha I'm the opposite. The kids saw my first name on the badge and felt entitled to it. I told them please call me by my last name.
