You do realize that reloading your own ammo is an option as well specislly if your bugging in and have the brass bullets and primers on hand which a few of ny family memebers do reload so you dont always have to buy ammo so theres another " your a dipshit " moment

I reload, and I admit I am way behind on my goals. Sadly, I don't expect that I would have a lot of evenings to be sitting on a stool pulling the handle if WROL becomes a nationwide thing, I think I will continue to have a lot more pressing 😅 issues that take up most of my waking hours.

Ammo to train with or just shoot may become impossible to get. Nobody is going to carry all that. Look at it as a ammo 401k. Now that I am retired and prices are up that would be handy for many purposes.

This isnt the marines, civilians dont have a magic logistical system rivaling the greatest acts of fiction humans have written to give them free ammo whenever they need it. If we want to be able to resupply we need to go out and buy the ammo to do so with

Several years ago I was putting together a small arsenal of SHTF firearms, one I wanted was a Mosin Nagant rifle because at the time ammo was dirt cheap for it, after a lot of searching I found a nice one and bought it at a gun show, One of the biggest complaints from preppers about a Mosin rifle was it was too Heavy, I picked it up and thought Hell, this this isn't that heavy to me, maybe those other people are weak ! After buying it, I slung it on my shoulder with the strap that came with it and continued looking around the gun show, after about 15 minutes or so the sling started digging into my shoulder a bit and chaffing the skin but not too bad and I switched it to the other shoulder, it was July and hot so I only had a thin shirt on with nothing to cushion the strap from my skin
then as I walked around the show I began switching the rifle more from shoulder to shoulder , then moved the strap across my chest but it made the rifle hang out where t would hit people as I walked along because the rifle is so long, so it was back to the shoulder again, anyway after another 30 or 40 minutes I was just carrying it at my side by hand to give my shoulders a break then my hand began to cramp, finally I found a bench to sit down and I was just wore out from carrying the Mosin, Then I thought Man this thing is real brick to carry around for any extended period of time and thought about the comments from others that said the Mosin was too heavy and realized they knew what they were talking about, So when people say they are going to carry several hundred rounds of ammo , a sidearm, plus other essentials like water and food, knives, body armor in a SHTF , They should load it up some time and take a hike with it for a couple hours before deciding what weapon or weapons and gear they plan on lugging around
Yep. I got armor, but that is for bugging-in. If I have to go out, I'm leaving that behind. if I'm walking, water is going to be the most important thing. In fact, if it was just me (no family) I would leave the guns and ammo at home and just bring a knife as the only thing I'll have that they want is water and if they try taking that, well, then I would have guns and ammo :) But I got a family now so guns and ammo is needed, but water is the most important thing and it's heavy.
This is true. So many people do not train regularly enough for it to work in real life. If you carry enough weight on a regular basis you get used to it. It is also easier when you are young.
well said and excellent point. I discovered a similar issue about a year ago with a plate carrier. I jogged and walked on my treadmill with my plate carrier on and discovered I could only cover about less than half the distance I could without the plate carrier. I also noticed the plate carrier made my shoulders and neck muscles extremely fatigued. Now, if some people literally train with a plate carrier regularly, that might be different. I found since then that an old school H or Y harness with some LBE is the way to go for any minute man or SHTF. Plate carriers are for urban settings or using a vehicle.
@@OneNationUnderGod.45 I wore body armor for over a decade. Watch TV with it on. Those muscles take time. Put it on and go about your day inside. Start every three days, then every other day. Do your morning warmup stretches and watch TV in on. It will grow in no time. STOP immediately if your back hurts. Then do some core exercises for a week and repeat.
Got it. I need 6.2 billion rounds of ammo.
And then after that just one more box.

Yep, everybody thinks they are going to leave the city/burbs and get into the wilderness. A) there isn't that much wilderness anymore. B) those out of the city don't want you in their territory. They may start shooting anybody they don't know as they will see them as invaders trying to take their food source. You may have a 'place' to go to that is welcoming, but you have to go through a lot of territory that isn't welcoming. IMHO, there is only one reason to bug out, and that is fire and in that situation, the destination needs to be as close as possible. The exception to that rule is if you are bugging out before SHTF but you know it's coming.
To add to that, I remember in 2008 after hurricane Ike. I rode out the storm on my boat (my home at the time) that was anchored in Galveston. I did ok during the storm but lost my inflatable. I rode my surf board to shore to find it after the storm. I found one of my propane tanks (lost 2) and the floor of my inflatable on one shore. I re-anchored next to the other shore and went to search for the rest of my inflatable. While I was searching I noticed my boat was drifting. I start paddling back on my board but couldn't keep up. Luckily a boat came by and I convinced them to take me to my boat. Here is the relevance: they wanted to shoot me for looting first. I wasn't sure what I was more pissed about: that my boat was about to get smashed on the rocks AFTER a hurricane because I didn't anchor it right, or that these guys wanted to shoot me for a misunderstanding. Point is, lots of trigger happy people out there and when they know nobody is around to do anything about it, there isn't much deterrence to them shooting you. Sure, you can go armed and be ready, but they may see you first and decide to shoot first (in the back) and ask questions later. So stay put as much as possible.

I’ve had a couple situations where I wanted to slap my forehead, because of a simple task that -in a panic- I missed a step or two and it caused a huge disruption to my life.

Few years ago a friend was talking about loading 1K rounds for "bug out", of 30-06! I asked him, "do you really know what you are talking about? I did more 18-20 mile load out rucks than I care to remember.
Put 500 rounds of 30-06 ammo in a full ruck, walk 5 miles. Then the next week, put 2,500 rounds of 22LR in that ruck and walk 5 miles.
22LR is the GOAT of ammo
How much work does a 22lr do? Vs 30-06?

1,000 rounds of 30-06 for a bugout seems high. I think that was a fair point. But which round you carry depends on what work you need to get done.

I did a bug out from a hurricane took a rifle a 7 mags and a pistol with a 4 mags.
Before I was working and didn't have a chance to leave it was a nasty one after I was retired and after a accident.
With all the other stuff it was a pain in the butt.
The next one that came along my snubbie 44 a 16in 44 carbine and one box of ammo.
@@tbjtbj4786 that's funny. I have similar enough path I followed. Except I haven't dealt with a hurricane since I was about 8. And with my recent stuff I brought a full sized .357 revolver and a .357 carbine. And a box of ammo.
But if I thought civilization was ending I'd bring something different.
Also, my ammo minimum is 1,000 rounds per rifle, 500 rounds per pistol/revolver, 500 rounds per shotgun and 5,000 rounds per 22lr.

22y 4m in the Marine Corps. 3 tours. If you need 10,000 rounds of ammo, or 10,000 per weapon you probably not going to survive anyway! That's full blown combat! I'm not sure what people think SHTF will be like? In the city will be most difficult. Country folks will need to stop scavengers and gangs. Sustained firefight probably won't happen, could, but probably not. I think most people have unrealistic views of SHTF. I know people who have hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammo. They have went into debt, mortgage their house and property for preps. Bad idea! SHTF will not last forever. There people you owe money will eventually want it back! You may not have a job. If you can't pay it back they will take your home and property. Don't survive SHTF just to become homeless. Pay off all your debt first! Nothing is going to happen anytime soon. You have time. Don't owe anyone.
Like this common sense thinking. People romanticize things they know nothing about. We get to the 3rd world scenario and we’ve got serious problems. Picture the world when the supermarkets close their doors. People can’t even provide the basics for themselves in this country. But this won’t happen overnight and you are right there’s time to get your house in order.

Yeah you are mostly right, people think there's going to be long term gun fighting. But that not gonna happen. When people realize theres no hospitals, ambulances or people coming to save them. The absolute last thing 99 percent of the population is gonna wanna do is have someone slinging lead at them. I know a couple who have more ammunition than every police dept in my county. And more semi heavy weapons then a entire platoon could carry. Probably 5years worth of MREs. 😂 if i had to eat 5years of MRE. i wouldn't want to survive SHTF.
My primary purpose of having a stash is so that I can continue to shoot and practice through the ammo shortages that occur every year or so due to the political winds. Yes, the same ammo can be used for other things but like you said I wouldn’t expect to use or survive thousands of rounds in a hostile environment. Just converting to a sustainable living situation is going to be hard enough, even living in the country with land.

Yeah I think people get too caught up in ammo. On handguns yes, it matters. I have some nosler 77 grain OPM and some bouji rifle rounds…but does it matter? Maybe a little now, if we’re talking one shot maybe ever so slightly(not enough for me to care(…but that’s one shot, 2-3 in a boar and does it matter? I think not but you be the judge. probably less so if society crashes and airlifts are not readily available

@@Lowiqpeoplethinktheyresmart Terminal ballistics on a rifle *does* matter, just not the the same extent it does on a pistol. M193 and m855 tend to fragment, although m193 is probably the better of the two against soft tissue. FMJ pistol ammo just doesnt have the velocity to fragment. Rifle soft points, hollow points, 77gr OTM's, etc are going to give superior and more consistent performance, especially from shorter barrels or at farther ranges.
I'd buy half m193 and half PSA 77gr OTM, or something like that.

I don't get it. Defensive rounds are somewhat for knockdown power but frankly mostly it's to prevent over penetration and the associated legal jeopardy during the post-incident investigation. In a lawless situation you're not really looking at the individual performance of rounds but at the overall effect on target. You may end up doing a lot of things that you would not do in civilized times; such as use volume of fire to suppress a superior force, engage multiple targets, etc...
As an overall strategy - remember, I can't predict any single scenario here other than a general state of lawlessness - I want volume over individual performance. I truly believe you would be much happier with 3,000 rounds of bottom of the barrel steel cased ammo than 750 of your fancy rounds. (As long as those steel cased rounds are in fact reliable to about 99.9% - less than 1 failure in 1000 rounds fired. Which they tend to be.) Fancy rounds are nice when each shot counts. But lawlessness dictates a much less defined state of conflict that necessitates warfare as opposed to self defense.
Agreed, I've seen guys storing 10k rds of hollow point. Not here to judge, it's their money but FMJ will get any job done when lawlessness breaks out.
I made a similar comment, but it’s mostly for handguns. Quality expanding or fragmenting rifle ammo is considerably more lethal than rifle ammo that ice picks through. Granted, even cheap FMJ rifle ammo can fragment but the defensive/hunting bullets do so more reliably.
@@pb7087 I don't necessarily disagree. However quantity has a whole quality in of itself. Volume of fire can benefit from $2 a round ammo but effect on target is pretty similar; which is to make people duck. $.32 a round does that just as well. Only sharp shooters do the one round one kill thing. Guys like me? Happy if i just make them hit the floor.
Volume of ammo is good. But a few reasons for sp ammo.
If you have to hunt with that rifle. Lot better chance of putting the game down quickly.
But also in a fight that sp is going to be more effective on the person.
I agree for true shtf ball would be fine but if this is a South Africa type situation where crime is out of control but you can still get arrested you need hollow point to protect yourself in the court of law
Fmj kills- as proven in all wars. With all the discussions about geltests and hollowpoints, stopping power etc. people seem to forget this or think a fmj will do nothing . I believe that fmj- besides being cheaper do have - in a shtf can have quite a few advantages... Penetrating obstacles for example.
Having hunting rounds for your game rifle is a must. 120 rounds sounds good. If you own 2 dozen guns you do not need 1000 rounds for each.
How much ammo do you need realistically? How many rounds does an average cop in the US - while working in a high risk area - shoot in a year? Do you think your risk is higher than theirs? Or do you expect to go full military combat against the " golden horde" ? I live in the EU in Germany ,it is a different situation here for sure.
Once you have a gun or two and a couple hundred rounds, having food is more important than more ammo..
Contrary to what many in the US think there are quite many guns around in Germany.But not far as many as in the US. I do own legally more than 10 handguns/ long guns.I hunt , shoot in a club, reload ammo. 85 million people total own around 6 million registered guns here and official guesses claim around at least the same to twice the amount of illegally owned guns . I always feel comfortable to have always around 300 rounds for my handguns and around 150 rounds for my long guns and 4 bricks of .22's. In real i store and have a little more. In general I believe that due to the fact that many US guys are used to go out plinking and burn a couple hundred rounds in one afternoon just for fun make them overestimate the ammount of ammo they should store for shtf.

You do not waste your ammo in that situation. Better use a pellet gun for target practise.

dude ill take 10k m193 over 1k anything else. honestly, when it comes down to it, a bullet is a bullet. everything else i agree with. I only have one rifle that takes a "special" load and thats my SPR build, but everything else, m193 or m855 is the go to.

@@samgolson862 whatever man, most people cant afford to stock large quantities of hunting or self defense style ammo, even if it is " better". i mean a few mags sure, but the vast majority of peoples stock is either m193 and m855, and thats a hell of a lot better than not having it. id be curious to hear how m855 is "garbage for a round" and what you actually mean by that.

Noise will be the enemy. Having a suppressed barrel for your 10-22 (or whatever) will stack the deck in your favor. Marry that with some nice subsonic rounds and there’s an ace up your sleeve... (yes there’s the down-side, I know)

I already have to accept a harsh reality. My only option is to bug in because of health reasons so even bugging in isn't going to be easy but it drops to a 0% chance if I leave. I stock what I can and as much of it as I can just to survive whatever I can. I'm trying to develop some friendships with like minded people just to increase the probability of my families survival.
Smart, actually that's wisdom. Different thing entirely. Knowing your limitations makes other decisions a bit simpler.
You and I sound very similar friend. I have been totally and permanently disabled for 24 years now after being broken up on the job and my wife of 34 years is now disabled and suffering from dementia as well. Traveling or bugging out don't apply to us, isn't an option. Where we are now is where we are gonna stay, Lord willing. We own our home free and clear, 3 sons who are grown and two of them are Army combat commanders with many tours under their belts. We stay informed about the current scenarios that our country is facing and it's not looking good for America as far as fielding ground combat ready troops are concerned. The questions these folks are asking surprise me as to how much ammunition someone should have, it's obvious that everyone should have ALL that they can afford. Most don't think about springs, firing pins, gas rings, gas tubes, etc. Or how they're gonna tote all of this SHTF supplies 🤔 😳. I am thankful for our situation honestly. We have 3 government pensions so we don't have to worry about income unless the country falls but we are sufficiently fixed with food and meds, fuel stockpiled for at least 12 months, plenty of game available in our rural North Idaho area so things are fairly good relatively speaking. It is the majority of Americans that worry me, especially the young and elderly. Anyway I suppose this is enough rambling on from an old man. Good luck to you and yours and God bless

My wife was mad that I bought another gun....an AR-15 for her, but I sold my watch to pay for it and the ammo and a few other items. I took her to the range. She didn't want to go and was scared sh__less to shoot it. I told her to stand up, hold it like rambo and just pull the trigger a couple of times (at a free mountain range so no rules). She was like wow, that was cool. She then sat down at the bench table and started aiming at the target with a smile on her face. On the way home she told me to buy more ammo :) The trick is to get them into it.
I employ the leave house with empty case cone hone with full case lol
Even at home on the farm with my team here, all my plate carriers and chest rigs hold 6 rifle magazines and 3 pistol magazines plus the IFAK, water, etc. Minimum two members on guard duty rotating 24/7. Other members will have their plate carrier or chest rig near where they are working (cutting wood, gardening, etc.). Keep Prepping my friends.
I've said this before, but I think a lot of advice is context specific.
When one discusses "SHTF" does one mean "3-10 days of living in hotels while fleeing a tornado or wild fire" or "10 years of war and mutant alien ninja bikers."
If I lived in Nebraska, had a rifle with say 5,000 rounds, and I actually owned a shotgun...then sure, 50 slugs sounds fine. But if I'm in SHTF and shooting birds, I'm using a 22 and shooting them on the ground or on the water.
If I lived in California and I only owned 1 gun, shotgun, then 500 slugs makes a lot more sense. Or if I lived in Alaska and wasn't running a 30 cal rifle.
And I don't see why a person would "need" a fighting rifle AND a fighting pistol AND a shotgun AND a bolt gun AND a .22...And...And...And ... I think it's an American thing and I really disagree with it.
I think people need a Primary + a clone Primary. Then a secondary.
People go 9 years and only shoot 40 rounds of hunting ammo because they only get 1 deer a year. Maybe 2. But SHTF means you will get 5+ deer a year if possible (for a family of 5). I am feeding my family primarily off stuff I hunt, livestock I farm, and livestock I buy from others (process myself). So I'm saying the numbers change dramatically as we transition from a "supplement/sport" to "primary source of food." And ammo consumption changes with it. I know Nebraska guys who have shot 40 rounds in 8-10 years. I get the mentality. And 2020 hit them hard because they suddenly didn't have ammo. Sucks to suck.
I'm a little wrapped around the axle on hunting. My real recommendation for people is "use your fighting rifle for hunting." And if a fighting rifle is too little for hunting deer, it's too little for fighting. My opinion.
Otherwise, I'm on board with the math of "2,000 rounds per gun you own." And I feel that stacks and sorts itself out better. 1000 duty, 1000 training. Per gun.
My opinion, based on my experience.
Who actually thinks that bird hunting is a good use of your time in SHTF? Risk vs. reward. Get tracked back home or to your family camp while you're out in the open trying to bag 1# of meat and 4# of feathers? Bad plan.
Everything else but pistol, a hole's a hole. They hurt. If you want an immediate fight ender, use an AR10. Otherwise shot placement matters more. Same with pistols. 9mm vs 45, why? Do the Rhodesian Drill and get your rifle back in the fight. Then run away and live longer.
@@feoxorus I agree with the point on hunting birds. Or ANY small game hunting. The energy spent vs what you get? The math just isn't there.
It sorta makes sense if you have a 10 year old who has nothing better to do with his time, you can send him off. Or you are waiting on crops to grow or unemployed and the rest of your living situation is squared away.
But there is so much shit that needs to be done on a daily basis for anyone actually living off the land. Small game "hunting" and "bird hunting" doesn't make sense to me.
Small game trapping makes some sense in a "energy spent vs rewards" calculation. The other situation where it makes sense is the "I have no food and need SOMETHING" situation.

For my shotgun I (having little real knowledge) have decided on #6 Steel and #4 buck for the shotgun with some 00 buck. #6 allows for game such as turkey and geese and #4 buck can take a deer. As for total amount not sure yet currently planning on about 500 of each. For the .22 consider magnum rounds, I made the switch simply because I can actually larger harvest game with it if needed. As a child I used .22 long rifle to take deer in Alaska vrs a predator well we will see. .22 mag I have around 5K last I checked. 556 well that is a work in progress simply because i have always thought that if I need it it will be "laying around". my bolt gun is a mouser 30.06 because its reliable accurate and dependable. Plus that round will take anything up to 4 legs in north America.
Mags, I have a minimum of 10 per system.

What about stocking 124gr winchester white box JHP for defensive 9x19 because of cost effectiveness but still being better then FMJ?
I know nothing, but continue prepping every month. I consider my sidearm (pistol) a concealable tool to get to a rifle. Be that a vehicle, a bag, or a location.
Self subsistence living is important to work towards. The more people that know the larger a target you could be if "apocalypse" style life comes.
Keeping your "group" close with communications (meshtastic, HAMM, etc.) and on the same page.

Your bugging in ammo recommendations are very good, but are optimistic for most of us. As for bugging out, the probability is that you will be on foot, and your recommended ammo load out would be way too heavy for the average person to carry along with other essentials. That said, at my age, bugging out is only happening if it can be done by vehicle, and early enough to be practical, say in case of a hurricane.

A "load out" I'm rocking a mk12 with 77 grain 5.56 and 7 20 round mags. Side arm with 5 mags. Travel light so you can bring stuff back. Hit and run, stealth is going to be your friend. But ammo, guns, and magazines will be worth a lot in a SHTF scenario. Food and clean drinking water is also a HUGE thing. Again....a stealth style is your best friend. Bunker...rural area to get to will be safest.
You are on the right track. Low profile with the guns. In Hurricane Katrina a guy was on an overpass with his rifle slung on his back and he was shot without cause by police because he was armed.

4K rounds for primary and 2K for secondary. If you have a 308 then 200 to 500 rounds for that.

The XTP is a solid but old round design. As long as you're aware of it's limitations ( poor performance on metal, and glass barriers) and use the round in the area its meant to run

I’ve been reloading for a few years now. I’m wondering about sealing primers and projectiles for long term storage …? Is that something you do? Or even think is necessary?
How long do you expect to not need to use them? Primers, I mean, bullets don't care as long as they don't get corroded. My 100-packs of primers all came sealed in cellophane years ago and work fine. Powder will last decades if stored at reasonable temperatures, I have 50-year old (ish) cans of IMR4064. No rust on the outside so I feel confident that the inside is fine too.
I keep enough bricks of primers to reload every case one more time in SHTF, that's it. Same for bullets. I was too lazy to calculate how much powder to stock so I just bought "a lot". ;)
@@feoxorus I should have worded it differently.. I meant using sealer on the cartridges after I reload. I do keep all of my components in air tight containers as much as possible. lol I did get a bunch of powder last yr.
What ammo you stock pile make sure you know how that ammo behaves. You don't know how many people I know who keep a couple of mags of premium ammo and like a dozen of other types. I would just stick with one or two types and know your holds on those.
Pistol: JHP for close quarters around people. 124 NATO for everything else
Rifle: 50 grain 556 Vmax for soft targets. M855 for everything else.

Spread out between a chest rig belt and pack and considering 100s of those rounds are 22lr this isn't that bad
the correct answer is "because of the obvious war of attrition on your rights stock as much as you can afford consistently because it has been increasingly harder to get and will soon be impossible to get". Potentially overnight. Other than food and medical gear, antibiotics etc, there is very little else you should be investing in now.
I'd argue a little more m193 instead of more vmax or whatever bc it's easier to procure more ball ammo than super specific stuff. I do say carry a specialty mag of something like cx or m855a1 or whatever for wildly enhanced performance in a fighting load

I just got 250 62gr tbbc, I really like how the back half is a copper slug with a lead tip so it penetrates good. I’ve got the hornady TAP T1 for my long range loading, couldn’t find any T2. Also have a couple k of PPU m193 to back it up
I built my a 12.5 ar specifically incase I need to go on a long trek with it 7.8lbs with a 30rnd 75gr mag and 5x PA macro prism. 8.5 lbs with a Magpul bipod
Good stuff. I break my serious caliber ammo stockpile into two categories, training and fighting. Then I set a threshold for each that I don’t go below. As time/finances allow I’ll up that threshold.
For bugging in sky's the limit (cause you arent humping it). If you are bugging out you can pack some extra ammo cans into a vehicle. On foot....Yeah you better be in good shape if you're planning on carrying 500 rounds of 5.56 or more plus everything you'd need (hell, you're gonna need to be in good shape regardless). At the end of the day who tf knows. 3 rifle mags may see you through whatever pops off or 50 mags plus might be woefully insufficient. Hell, all your preps could go up in flames. Develop skills and your physical fitness. Guns and gear can only do so much to fill gaps in those areas.
I stopped stashing 5.56 after 2,500 rnds. I have 2 different rifles. It just became extremely heavy when combined with the 9mm and 12 gauage i also have stashed. My train of thought was if we had to up and run i wouldn't be able to haul all that ammunition.

I’d love to stock pile Vmax or some kind of 75, 77 grain for my AR but it’s just not practical for me given the cost per round yet alone getting more sighting in my rifle for something I probably wouldn’t get more of just isn’t practical for me or many people. long range I have a 30-06 and 7mm rem probably take the 30-06 way more common in my AO. great video tho as always
One thing I’ve never figured out or hear anyone else comment on is the hot dog / hot dog bun theory. If your magazine holds 30 rounds and your ammo comes in 20 round boxes, you SHOULD be calculating magazines in 60 round increments or 3’s. Otherwise, what are you doing with the other rounds in their boxes/cases? This may not apply to bulk but certainly premium.
When I buy boxed 556 it’s either in 3 or 6 box minimums. When ammo restrictions were in place and you could only get 5 boxes at a time, I’d either talk them up to the 6th box or walk with 3 and it would always surprise the retailer. And if they wouldn’t sell the 6th box then I’d buy 3. Leave and come back later for the second 3 box lot.

There is a lot of advice here regarding a wide variety of ammo for various calibers. Is using all of the various firearms really feasible though in a SHFT situation?
Example: You're out hunting birds with the shotgun for example. Is that gun intended to be used if you run into trouble or is your pistol that weapon in this situation? Are you carrying your 5.56 or preferred "battle" rifle with you wherever you go? If you are carrying your primary "battle" rifle every time, do you really need the "hunting" round as I would think that anything that will take down a 2 legged problem will take down 85% or more of the game in any area.

There are so many scenarios to plan for that you have to Creat flow charts for as many you can. Civil unrest, emp, invasion, A.I./tech, chemical, pandemic etc and what to do in each scenario. Bug in, bug out, how you are traveling i.e. vehicle, horse, foot. How long will you be traveling to said location? What is at that location? Are you in a group or you + immediate family. Have you trained with said group and made plans for these scenarios? Are you willing to do direct action or what I suggest is avoidance of enemy combatants specially uniformed soldiers. Then organizing your supplies for the situation starting with bugging in then walking and being able to plus up for better capabilities.
Supplies should include food, water + water purification, clothing, fire starting equipment, cooking equipment, medication, kit, ammo, first aid (long term), shelter supplies, fishing and trapping supplies, compass + maps (road and topographic), comms, new broken in boots, etc.

1000 rounds is my bar. 15 mags for the BR loaded and 2!to 4 mags for the sidearm and I only have 4 calibers 45. 9mm 5.56 and my 50 which is my fun gun and the 12 gauge Mka 1919 feel like those all all common enough there will be plenty to scavenge if required minus the 50 but I would leave it behind if I have to bug out and I have to make a choice. Plus all replacement parts to service and maintenance them.

A standard combat loadout is 7 mags for primary weapon plus 3 mags pistol. My primary loadout was 3 pistol mags and 9 rifle mags.
I often criticize dudes that have 10 pallets of ammo they don't use because it's for "emergencies" and no crane, forklift, or bug-out truck capable of transporting them all. And they spend their time training for golf instead of anything that would be helpful in those "emergencies". They don't even have short, mid, and long term plans for sustainable subsistence. What the heck are they thinking?

@@Brennan_the_smith During my youth, I killed dozens of squirel and game birds a week with a break action pellet rifle. These days, I bow hunt hogs in Florida and fish the rivers and the coast. In my area, I can be at the ocean within an hour bike ride and still sit in a tree stand and get at least one hog per week. Single bevel broadhead can be resharpened, and its simple design makes it less likely to fail.
Every time I went to a store that sold it, I got some 22LR, and if cash was tight, I'd get a $3 box of 50, but often got 550 round box for $30 bucks, and after no time at all I had over 8000 rounds of just about everything!
For my primary rifle and pistol I try and have a minimum of 5k for each (5k m855 and 5k of a mixed defense and ball 9mm) for all of my other pews a minimum of 1k except 12ga I stay around 250 of buckshot and slug. Also I don’t keep everything in one location I have caches all around the woods around my property and at a secondary location

2 things i want to point out here.
1. M193 or m855 are both very capable 556 rounds for defense, assuming you keep them in their desired velocities ~2700+ due to fragmentation. There are different ways to measure lethality when it comes to bullets. The 5.7x28 for example tumbles at higher velocities.
2. Ar15 22lr conversion does not seem anymore valuable than a dedicated 22 match pistol like a ruger mkiv. The conversion mags are very bulky and take up a lot more space. A target 22 pistol would be a good idea. You dont necessarily need a rifle to hunt small game. 1200rds on foot and 3-4 guns seems like way too much as well. Im thinking 1 rifle and 1 pistol (maybe a second 22 pistol) and thats it. Cut that ammo to about half as well. You are likely not going to be in a fighting scenario at all.
My approach is to have a target in mind as to how many rounds per caliber, reload or purchase to hit that target, and then shoot-one-reload-one so I'm always at net-zero ammo usage. Now, my targets are relatively high (10K rounds of .22 LR, 5K rounds of 9mm and 556, 1-2K rounds of everything else). The logic being 9mm and .556 are the most logical go-to's in SHTF due to commonness, .22LR is the most logical barter round (after everything cools down and it's safe enough to barter ammo) and everything else is a luxury.
But bear in mind I'm speaking from the privilege of having inherited my father's vast stockpile of ammo (and reloading supplies). BEFORE that, my targets were a lot more modest (basically 500 rounds of 9mm, 1K rounds of .22LR because those were the only calibers I owned).
I always hear people say I don't need more ammo than I can carry. Or "you can't carry all that". Yeah no crap. I don't stockpile to take it with me. Nobody does. You stockpile for two main reasons. One is inflation. Buy as much as you can when you can because it ain't getting cheaper. That is assuming that you actually shoot on a regular basis. The other is in case ammo is hard or find or supplies dry up. During the cough when ammo was scarce and what could be found was a buck a round, I was at the range shooting.
People need to quit complaining about the people that have thousands of rounds and just focus on their own preps.
Problem is most dudes I know that stockpile that way just hoard for no reason. They don't train with it or the guns. They have no fitness, no infrastructure, no shtf detailed plans, no offgrid type skills, no water/food/shelter plans. They don't even have plans for relocating it when necessary or the tools to do so and protect it. They just "panic buy" it as a commodity thinking they can use it to trade for that stuff when it all goes south. That's where half the scarcity inflation comes from. But without all the other aspects/skills necessary, the ammo will do nothing but collect dust and every panic buy you add to it drives up cost and scarcity for everyone else without any reason except to satisfy your idiotic resolution that somehow "more ammo equals more survival and safety". There's a diminishing return based on your personal self. You got a compound ready for friends and family? Great! Stockpile them pallets! Is it in your garage in the suburbs? You got bigger concerns if shtf.
I don't think the scenario even matters after SHTF you're not gonna need to practice you're gonna get plenty of real life experience As a matter of fact you'll probably start getting blood sick before you run out of ammo, The standard loadout for any operation is 250 280 rounds and that would be battle rifle rounds, That may have changed since I've gotten out which was in ninety-four But carrying more emblem than that into an op starts to stack on a lot of weight and could be counterproductive

Fmj is all u need. People think you need hollow points. Gotta cover all bases. It could be a gunfight or anything you have to shoot through a barrier. Hollows won't do that. I rather have fmj

I partly agree. I think there is a great benefit to having various types of quality ammunition to fulfill specific tasks. That being said, I would stockpile a shit ton of quality fmj ammo first, then once you reach your inventory goals, start to buy different types of loads for your primary rifle. For a handgun though , I would get a few boxes of good hollow point defense ammo right away while simultaneously stocking fmj. Once that fmj is stocked up, branch out to other task specific loads.
Some think of stockpiling ammo like they are going to the range like everything is normal for years after SHTF happens, and I'm betting most will not live long enough to unload their first magazine!
My G17 clone is in a water tight green box I got at a gun store with 10 magazines and an extra box of 50 rounds as that's all that will fit!
But the "truck gun" is a PMR-30 with 4 magazines and an additional 500 rounds!

I get whatever i can get my hands on. These days in my area its 223 hunting ammo and ball 5.56
I DIY mine, and have decided 3 max battle loads. In 27 yrs 4 TICs and never burned through each full battle load. So I think its a good amount to have. While I like my 5.56, I love my Grendel which is battle, hunting or sniping. Yes I know I can reach 700+ meters with it.
I’m probably a little extra some ppl would say. Idk I’ve got a phobia where I’m terrified ima run out of ammo 😂. For 5.56 I have a few different ammos stored up. Try to keep at least 500 minimum of each type. The two I have the most of is Hornady frontier 75gn bthp and 75gn aac Sabre but I’ve also have quite a bit of 64gn federal power shock. Between those 3 alone I have 30-35ish loaded mag between a few different bags, on my plate carrier, belt and vehicle. And another 7-800rds of each still in boxes. Then no telling how many other type rounds I have but I’d say close to 2000rds of random stuff. Then my secondary rifle is 6.5 Grendel. Which I just counted and I have exactly 1344rds. Majority is 123gn eld, sst, and bthp from Hornady but I do have 350rds of 90gn tnt couple hundred rounds of Barnes 115 tac-x 60rds of 90gn nosler bt, 100rds of the new 100gn v-match few boxes of ppu Remington and federal fusion. I’ve only got 6 15rd loaded mags 4 25rd mags and 2 10rd mags. As far as 9mm I’ve got a buttload of fmj but honestly only 250-300rds of actual defense ammo. Couple thousand rounds of 22lr and that’s all I stock up on. Plus a good bit of reloading materials. Pretty sad but I don’t even have 100rds of 12 ga. I did just pick up a Rossi semi auto 22mag so I’m about to start stacking up on that stuff since it’s fairly cheap. And with all that said I don’t even plan on taking a shot if possible. I just can’t even think about having so many firearms with no ammo 😂
How do you like that hornady frontier I just got 400 of their black 75gr bthp. The frontier is a T2 tap bullet while the black is T1tap, T2 is more desirable. I have 250 62gr trophy bonded bear claw and a couple k ppu m193 to back it up
@@CheeseBurgerXJthe frontier shoots really good from my 14.5” and 12.5” that’s why I ended up getting so much of it. I think the Hornady black is probably a little better especially if you get the 5.56 loading. The 223 stuff is a little slow but consistent. The only Hornady black 75 grain bthp I’ve found though was sold at academy in 50rd boxes. I don’t ever see it in the 20 rd boxes. But main reason I went with the frontier is because I bought it years ago when it was only $.58-.60 a round. I’ve since switched to the 75 grain aac Sabre. Definitely more consistent stuff out there but can’t beat it for the price. Same reason I went with the fed power shock 64gn sp for my defense/barrier/hunting bullet. Used to get that stuff for $.60 a round. Still find it on sale for $1 a round nowadays.
@@justa3v619 yeah I’ve got a 12.5 as well, I just started purchasing 556 this year when I built my gun so I’m way behind the curve. I got somewhat of a deal at scheels on the black 75gr for .90 cents a rnd after tax and shipping and some 62gr trophy bonded bear claw for .95cpr. I’m keeping my eye out for a deal on the frontier ammo and the aac 75gr bthp, it uses the T1 projectile as well. I don’t like that the hornady black is taper crimped vs cannelure crimp but they say it’s for accuracy.
@@CheeseBurgerXJsgammo usually has some good stuff. They have some 64gn bonded loaded by blue line for like $.80 a round. I haven’t tried it but I’m pretty sure they are using the same projectile as the federal 64gn bonded. If you want a varmint round for limited penetration the aac 62gn Sabre seems to be a good one. I have a couple hundred of those, I very seldom use varmint rounds for anything but it’s nice to have a few. The 55gn Hornady frontier fmj is a good fmj round too it’s actually loaded to xm193 pressures and is usually around $.50 a round
@@CheeseBurgerXJeven though you just started if you buy a few boxes a week it adds up quickly. I usually try and order at least 5 boxes twice a month and more when I got extra $. I used to order all my ammo from sportsmansguide and use their 4 pay. I’d order 500rds once that was paid off id order 500 more. But that was back when frontier 75gn was $12 a box. I mostly just order the aac stuff from psa now because of the prices.
You need 5 complete sets of springs and 2 sets of pins including firing pins and channel liners. Dry fire can be hard. Stock up on mag springs and a few followers.
My ammo stockpile is 85% range use, for when ammo is hard to get, or to expensive. And 15% put away for the end times
On bug out its whatever the hell I have on me. You have to be flexible and move quickly. Movement is life, you can always come back around and counter ambush.
Serious Long Term
Tygon or Nalgene Bottles.
Fill with Ammo AFTER putting Dry Ice in the bottom or backfill with Nitrogen.
Let set and check with a match at the top. When the match goes out there is no Oxygen in the container. Seal tight. Seal with wax or Epoxy around the top.
I decided to go w like 3k rounds of m855...my 7.5 pistol ar loves that stuff...have alot put back for my wasr10 so that would probably be the one i grab if i had to gtfo of town
I can't imagine carrying three guns plus a through-hiking 40 lb backpack with cookware, sleep station, water, etc. I think I'd take a hand gun and a .22 or maybe short 5.56. Most of the weight of the load out would have to be life essentials instead of defense, but each long gun is 7-10 lbs with optics and lights.
Load mags -1 round under capacity. Saw a study on failures years ago, common cause was failure to feed from full mag.

Wouldn't an ar-10/ or scout style 308 be able to cover as both primary battle rifle and long range option? It just seems to me like the 223 is a bit of a compromise. I know the ammo is heavier but if your only carrying one rifle you can carry more ammo.

Just like light mg fire teams, plan on an ammo carrier per gun , treat civies like a 2 to 3 man fire team, prefer a 3rd with comms.
I went with a conversion kit for the ar just so i can shoot .22lr and 223/556 on the same platform without having to buy a designated platform for .22lr just makes simce to carry the conversion and not another platform with all the extras
77gr otm is the way to go for combat loadout on an ar15 imo. If you’re bugging out I’m leaving 90% of my crap at home, snagging my Glock with 10mags, 7 ar15 mags with the OTM and a broken down sbr in my pack. The rest is food water shelter. That’s going to be a 30lb ruck easy. Most ppl can’t even carry that weight a couple miles
