I understand what you explained . But sometimes things other people do bother us so much because of our egos. If your ego is attached to your locs and what it means about you to have grown your locs organically, you will bothered by other people not taking the same journey.

It’s unfortunate that what others are doing so deeply effect others. What happened to freedom of choice, it’s this perspective that apply limits to OUR ability to grow. Are they flexing on you or are they living their lives the way they want and you’re bothered. If your journey was prompted by personal reason (spiritual) then that’s your reasoning and that’s wonderful. There is a HUGE difference between truth and opinions. There are some valid points you are making but yet at the same time you’re (in my opinion) you are offering your opinions as truth and that can never be so. It sounds like a lot of generalizations. I am a very honest person and am vocal about my feelings and people appreciate that about me and come to me for just that, it is not my place to judge from any place than love and love does not name call or make assumptions. Peace dear heart!

In a way I do understand. But of course as someone who has loc extensions I'll defend them 😁 .
I don't share all the same opinions and that's ok. As far as judging a person based off whether or not they have loc extensions, I'd have to disagree.
I'm a cancer survivor and had to go through harsh lessons about patience, letting go and resilience. To be honest I may not have time to grow my hair the way I want lol. So for me it's better to live in the present. When I came out of it I just decided I want what I want and that was it. So I locked my hair and then added some extensions.
I judge people too we all do. You just never know what goes into a person's decision which is why I try not to be so black and white sometimes. That's my opinion. Everyone enjoy your day!

It’s one of those things I notice black people often do that is unneeded. Judging for things that genuinely don’t matter and judging for things that other races don’t care about. We over do it basically. As someone that has grown their hair over 24 inches of locs, I know that having black hair in GENERAL is a journey and the loc journey is basically having short hair and growing it. You can do that with loose hair and it’s the same experience. We all have to start from somewhere. Get your extensions if you want them and can afford it! Being black is the experience and it is NOT A RACE. That’s why it’s called a journey

  • @Totallyhotchic

People really don’t realize how deep this actually is. It’s not just about the locs being real or not, it’s everything really. Back in the day if you had a big booty, you got it from yo mama. Not to docta. Thick lips were home grown and not syringe injected. Natural hair or straight hair wasn’t something you could buy you either had it or you didn’t. Designer anything was 100% real and if you couldn’t afford it, there was no fakes. We’ve come so far from reality at this point that anything goes and truth is subjective. Optional. Deception is a way of life now for a good majority of people and those who choose to live authentically will soon be looked at as crazy people.

All through my childhood/growing my Grandmother (RIP) always said... "your hair is your strength so protect it and be mindful of the energy/company you keep". I was a loose natural for years before starting my microlocs journey 10/11/20 and I must say going through each stage has educated/enlightened my spirit/soul in so many ways. It's a connection you have to experience/go through to fully understand/appreciate. Blessings All!💜

But instead of getting angry at the trigger, I decided to go inward and I realized that I was def. trying to bypass the journey. Once I recognized that within myself, I came around to watching the video and I’m glad I did. Idk about all these other folks but I come to Sammy’s page for the realness! I never cared about how people ended up with locs because when you’re black, that IS the experience. When you have black hair, your hair products cost more, it’s harder to keep up with etc. loose hair or having bigger strands makes zero difference. You sign up for a journey when you were born African. We take such small things and make a big deal out of them. I grown mine out for years until they reached waist length and never have I looked down on someone with extensions because WHO CARES. We’re all in the same boat 😂 over expensive products, being looked down on for being black in general, and not to mention the glares we get for having locked hair or loose hair regardless

Bc it's against the colonial beauty standards engrained on weak minds.
We all may have been there. The point of the journey of hair and ultimately of life , especially in our circumstances IS to come out of the indoctrination not lean on/in.
There is no ugly stage unless one is ugly on the inside, in which case, the only fix is self awareness.

I think what bothers me the most is that people who confide in me about wanting to start locs always say they want to get locs but they don’t want to go through THAT stage. And I’m almost offended when I get caught in these conversations but I always let them know that each stage has its own challenges but it’s a beautiful process. When I tell women that these stages humble you and teaches you how to love yourself and your hair on a different level, they don’t want to hear it.

I agree about the loc extensions. I’m 6 weeks loc’d and when deciding how I wanted to start them, I considered loc extensions but they didn’t feel right. There’s a greater bond that you develop when you grow them yourself, not to mention it’s not just hair. Cheating my way through it does nothing for me. Long homegrown locs are not only a major flex but the individual’s vibrations are always higher.

Ugh finally!!!! I’ve always felt like such a bitch for not vibing w the loc extension crowd. I’ve had my locs almost 7 years (started when I was 19) and it was such a game-changer in my development and self acceptance as a black woman. It’s unmatched. It’s not just hair to me. And I get that it may be just a style for others who choose to get extensions. But I say this even for those of us who overstyle our locs or use too many products and damage them - at the end of the day, you are reinforcing the toxic behavior surrounding our hair that makes you unsatisfied in the first place. You will never truly experience the freedom and love of your natural self if you don’t completely surrender to the process. Period. You’ll always be working against yourself. While I believe in everyone’s right to do as they please and for it to be “just a style” for them, I honestly feel like that’s fine, but they need to also understand when ppl do not truly see them as part of the community. Bc it is bigger for the rest of us. So have your style, like do you, but do not minimize locs and their impact for those of us who went into this and are committed to it.

I was relaxed for years so I decided to go natural. I did a big chop and decided to grow natural. Once my length reached nape length, i decided to do my locs.... my husband was/is loc'd and I wanted to join him in that journey. I loved the baby phase, the frizz, the cute curls. I effed it up and never took care of it like I was supposed to. So I big chopped again, hair grew out again and then I effed up AGAIN and went off and relaxed my hair. I regret it so badly because I wanted my locs.... so here we are trying to find a way to loc my hair because relaxed locs look crazy. So I found out abt the instant loc and thought hey I can do this and start over fresh. Granted I can't lie, wont lie I know me and know that patience isn't my strong suit AT ALL, especially because its newly relaxed. However, I don't have problem letting people know its instant and extension lol I know the time it takes to nurture the locs, because I've nurtured my husband's locs. where it started from baby puffs now down to his butt lol. I hear your opinion and how you feel but at the end of the day people are going to do what they are going to do. No shade, no disrespect, if it makes em' happy then that's all that really matters.

I really respect what you are saying here😊. I am just in the baby stage and internally the wrestling with how I look, how I feel. Long standing doctrine of beauty that I myself was working with up to now , all that is beginning to fade.I felt beautiful on the inside at times and now I want to feel that way all the time . My soul has pushed me to that corner and I want to get to the real me underneath it all. I understood deeply that protective styles were protecting the me underneath them and now having stepped from under that it’s a whole new world of discovery and my smile has come back. I did my research yannitheloctician, loccrush and you have been really so helpful on this journey. Taking all the fuss out of it and putting back the love into it . Philosophy and spirituality is half of it the will to become it the other half . It is precious I get that . Less is more oil and rosewater / aloe water and maybe flaxseed gel if you really need it . But breaking it down . That is what I was doing for so mss as my years and can’t believe it took me so long . As for instant locs i I can see if you want to play with colour and not touch your locs at the end that might be fun and for a change that way you are not fooling any one. Thank you for such inspirational videos with food for your brain as well as your hair , Keep on Keeping up ❤💜

I understand, however, I must say that it does not bother me, I have started my loc journey and I am loving it, all of it. I do know some people who have loc extensions and instant locs and I don't believe they wear it as a costume. I am choosing to go this way, this isn't the only way to grow beautiful long locs, if someone was smart enough to find a quicker way then by all means .. ya know, but I'm not gonna get annoyed and irritated as if they actually DID something to hurt me or anyone else. It's their head.. their journey, why would I feel some type of way? like that tattoo scenario.. who cares, maybe he did not want to go through the pain and long hours it takes to get a tattoo lol so good for him he found a way to get one. im not being rude or anything I'm just stating my views on it, I think we should focus on ourselves more and as long as these faux-wearing people aren't going around ripping the locs out of someone else's head and using it as theirs i could care less about how that achieved their locs.

I instant loc'd my loose natural hair and I'll say this this. While I was overly excited and wanted my locs to look mature, they matured like starter locs of any other locing technique. They only looked like somewhat mature locs for the first 24hrs, and then essentially began to look like sectioned pieces of an afro lol. There's no bypassing any stages. Some folks need to understand that everyone isn’t thinking deeply about a “loc journey”. Some people get locs because of convenience, other people get locs for the spiritual significance and they want to go through the whole journey. But I think people need to stop lumping their beliefs and they feel about loc extensions, instant locs, faux locs etc. onto other people. If you don’t like it then don’t do it! Everyone has their own journey and it might not be the same as yours. On another note, I could care less if a person grew their locs from the beginning and went through the journey and I could care less if a person has loc extensions or instant locs! New subbie. I’ve had my Sisterlocks for a little over 2 years. The bottom line is that a person that has never grown locs organically can never understand the internal growth and self development and awareness that comes from it. It’s almost like the love that a mother has for a baby she carried in her womb vs a child she adopted. No one is saying she doesn’t love both but the road to realizing motherhood differs and I would even venture to say that the magnitude of love MAY differ. I love locs for all aspects, not just because they look “cool” or because they’re popular. People that get locs purely for aesthetics would NEVER understand how organic loc’ers feel.

I agree with your video opinion about fake loc extensions. I don’t like fake hair weaves hair extensions. I use to wear wigs but it’s something about glue/sew in weaves that turns my stomach. It bothers me that BW buy this fake hair from who knows where with all kind of cancerous chemicals and sews or glues in our heads leaving the weaves on the scalp for months. Your hair is dying your scalp is suffocating and your brain is not able to function properly. Our love for straight long hair is scary. We can grow our own hair and stop paying for fake hair. Fake loc extensions is ridiculous it’s not a hair style it’s a life style! We are killing our bodies with fake hair, relaxers, BBL, fake eye lashes, nail extensions, breast the list goes on and on. This behavior needs to stop now ! Get back to the 70s when a black goddess was all natural and beautiful 😍.

I wanted to start my loc journey in its raw state, My channel shows me starting my locs and my journey and Ill be 2 years next week!! Its made me connect to myself in away I haven't before. Its made me more spiritual for sure.
As for celebs when I saw Beyoncé in that elevator and then trying to do damage control after with photos off them all smiling weeks after. She got the side eye. I dont look up to celebs I appreciate the music but I don't follow them blindly. fab video

The origin of locs actually date back to Ethiopia as a form of rebellion against colonialism. I feel as though we need to do more research into the history of locs and what it means to wear them. I understand where you’re coming from, as I have been made fun of through school for my locs only for it to become trendy now. However, I don’t really look down on people who get loc extensions. We do not have knowledge of what everyone’s journey is whether that be mental, spiritual, emotional etc. therefore, none of us are in a position to really ridicule anyones journey. Although my locs are all natural and I’ve had to go through shaving it off due to color damage and start all over again, going through those difficult stages, everyone is different. I’ve noticed that people from all directions of life can be judgmental and this has caused me to not try to fit in with any one crowd, whether that’s natural, or enhanced (such as wearing faux nails and wigs). I would just encourage anyone to do research into anything they plan to do with their hair and other areas of life.

I had 4 permanent loc extensions installed when I over bleached
a few of my own locs. Trust me, they are nothing like the real thing even though it's human hair.
They do not feel real, the texture gets loose over time and is not the same kinky texture as real hair plus they smell different too. You have to wash them almost daily bc they smell like outside. They look real until you compare them to real homegrown locs then you can see a significant difference in look and feel. No disrespect to those who start out that way, I’m just letting you know from personal experience that it’s not gonna be the same and if I were you, I would cut them out after your own hair has grown to the length you want.

For me personally I don't care what someone else has going on but I do believe in the "own your stuff" . If you have loc extensions or added real locs whatever it maybe ...yes enjoy it but just don't take credit and act as if it's real because that disrespects anyone who has put time and effort and their all into this process...this journey.....keep speaking the truth lovely lady .... First I want to say thank you for being an inspiration to me. I finally made my changes last year in October. I viewed many, many videos (many of your videos included), and read soooooo much material. Everyone has their differences in preference, opinions.... do this, don't...etc, that the ONE thing I took away from all of the videos and material is this "You do what is best for you. Your journey is yours and yours alone. What works best for one, may not be best for you. A style that you may seek as a goal, may not be your actual results." I mean there is other stuff, but primarily this is what stuck with me the most.
Now with all that being said I want to speak a little of my own personal thoughts on this particular video.
Let me speak my daily truth. I chose to do instant locs. After researching the methods and the stubbornness of NOT wanting to have to rely on someone to maintain my hair etc... AND the fact that it's a bit of a challenge doing this method (plus I didn't want to chop ANY of my hair), I felt this was the way to go. I had two textures, natural & relaxed. Now although it's called "instant" it wasn't like boil in-a-bag rice that's done in 10 mins or less. It took time and my poor fingertips. I didn't even know if I did it right. Looked legit, but would it last?? So I did my first wash about a month later. Maybe less. I figured if my locs survived then I was on the right track, which they did. In fact I started my journey because my hair said it was the right time. Originally I brought up the possibility of doing locs back in 2012. Yet it was 2021 when I finally went for it. Just a many months before October, I had stocked up on all my favorite products. None of which could crossover to my revised hair choice. That was painful lol. About a few months prior, I legitimately didn't know WHAT I wanted to do with my hair. I literally reached the end of my possibilities.
Then I looked at the possibility of IF I should get extentions. Not for the length ....but because I had a signature look of having black & white ombre hair (braids). I didn't want to bleach my locs ever. I also didn't want to start my new journey with causing damage... I finally made the decision to get them after I stumbled onto a picture of Lil Wayne's hair. Idk what happened to that man, but I knew I didn't want to look like....that.
I researched more. I also knew how the loc community felt about them. But hey, I'm a Black woman in America, kinda use to not having a "proper place" except within my own soul. I did those myself too. I even washed them the SAME day... I'm very open about MY journey to everyone who is interested to listen. I mean coming out of my moms womb, I was outspoken. I don't lie about anything (I'm not saying in my youth I was 100% honest. I lied a lot. But it was when I started telling truth and not being believed, I kinda woke up on that being my own fault). I don't see how anyone can I in regard to loc extensions. Pictures and timestamps can put ANYONE on blast to be honest. Funny to lie about that.
Now what made me finally post a comment to THIS video is wow, finding out that the method I used is also segregating me MORE from another "community". I mean I seriously have had confusion. Over the many years when the world was tripping about Hispanics because of the wall, then the Transgender community because of bathroom "safety" ....and then somehow the world did a full circle to the Black community. Not a problem with Blacks......UNLESS you're in Starbucks, or UNLESS you're locked out of your home trying to get back in....falling asleep at your University. Yada, Yada, yada... I get it now. Which it makes more sense why we are "not" suppose to pass judgement (even though we do anyway depending on our tolerances etc..) and it's only up to God to do so. I get it now.
So despite the urge to continue enjoying your videos because you share so many great points on many things, I know that at the end of the videos, you don't like me. I mean it's more directed at my hair, but I'm apart of my hair lol. So in actuality, I'm not welcome.
I can accept that. It is what it is. No love lost. I can say that I'm still 100% proud of MY journey, whether it's accepted OR not. At the end of this life.... I am left with me up until the very last second.
    ❤🙏🏽

Wow, you said a lot lol😅. I appreciate your honesty. To be clear, I don’t dislike ppl for their hair choice..I dislike when ppl lie or pretend. Even with me feeling that way, it’s a pov…not a verdict. We’re allowed to hold 2 different view points without it meaning that you’re exiled lol. That’s part of the issue tbh. We shouldn’t need everyone to validate our experience in order to walk in it with our 10 toes down. That’s the resilience that you learn to practice through this journey and it’s absolutely needed, hence my issue with the attempt to skip ahead. Being bold enough to be your full self regardless is what creates impact in the world. But, if you feel uneasy interacting in this space as a result of my thought process..I respect your right to adjust your participation as needed. I wish you the best✨

Not having the same opinion/preferences are apart of life and everything that we do in life. Having respect is so vital. I am glad there is that common ground, amongst others I'm sure. It's comfortable to know that feeling "exiled" was my own misunderstanding and not the message you were expressing. Like I stated, you're inspirational. Thank you so much.

I’ve had four sets of locs. The second set was a set of loc extensions on natural hair that was grown over 4-5 years. One, they were done terribly, but two it was my biggest regret and a waste of money. Cut them off around year 4, was a bad baldie, grew my hair, 3 set was a small set of comb coils, combed them out after a year, then restarted with my own diy microlocs. Better energy. But nothing compared to my current and prior set experience with seeing my hair transform and accepting my hair and myself as is. I’m 14 months loc and see that this set will be my long haul. I think people can do them, being on both sides, I understand but there’s such a huge difference.

The only thing I have to add, you have to practice what you preach. You can’t act like you’re above criticism or differing opinions and love honesty if you’re talking about having people argue with themselves and not engaging with opinions that differ from yours. You opened yourself to having people comment on agreeing and disagreeing and being cool. That seems a bit hypocritical, hence the aforementioned. When I say I love differing opinions, I engage in it, not have yes men clapping me up.

So if they care about your opinion…they’re supposed too take their “whatever” Locs out? Breaking what makes them feel confident and happy. Too make the real loc nation happy? I’m just saying some people are more confident doing it the quick process way than the slow process way? Ppl want long hair every day but their hair don’t grow, so it’s a sin to buy a 30’inch wig. Because they 25 yrs old with the same 5 inches they had in kindergarten lol…frfr. So they’re wrong for doing what helps them embrace their self esteem? Nice…my personal opinion though is that we no longer live in the 60’s and if your hair doesn’t grow buy it sis, if your body doesn’t make you feel confident buy it then. Back then you had no choice and if you wasn’t happy with yourself then it was to bad. But being in the latest trend shouldn’t be shamed upon if it changes someone self esteem. Honestly we can judge what society is making a new normal. But judging ppl for making the decisions that make them comfortable with the skin they’re in….I’ll agree to disagree on this one.

I see what youre saying. But i also see what shes saying shes spoken on this topic before..its more like people often want to change themselves because of what they see everywhere else. Whether it be television, social media, their environment etc. We are influenced by all of this either conciously or subconsciously. But what we fail to realize is that we don’t need to look like everyone else in order to feel beautiful…think about the trends that come and go like how being thin was popular and everybody wanted to be skinny and have big breasts. Now its the opposite, everybody want a big butt and smaller breasts. If the norm was to have short hair i feel like everybody would run to chop theirs off..I mean you see it on social media everyday. Now this is just her opinion and her point of view so you dont have to do anything. You go an buy that body and that hair if you want to girl! But, dont forget to take time to think about what she says in a way that isn’t coming at you personally. Think about it in the way that we as a people are influenced to want to look a certain way based on what is displayed around us. People almost look the same nowadays because they all want to fit into this mold of what an attractive person should look like. It seems as though we are loosing what makes us human physically…we are not perfect, and sometimes our hair doesnt grow as fast as others. But its a fact that it does grow, we just have to take care of it amd be patient with it. The loc journey is just that a journey. As your hair grows you begin to learn to accept yourself in every stage. In every form, because there is more to us than our physical appearance. It teaches you to let go of the way you look and not be so consumed with it all the time. But with time and patience, you will get results. Not everything has to be fast all the time. We need to remember what its like to be patient, our technology has gotten us into a bad habbit of being rewarded almost immediately with little effort. As a result we are met with the way that we act now. We dont want to wait for our hair to grow, we dont want to go to the gym to get our bodies how we want them, we dont want to sit and read we would rather watch a movie. You know? So in conclusion I believe that when she talks about extensions not being the wave there is a much bigger point she is making. But also that is only her opinion, and this paragraph is only mine.

I understand what you’re saying but for me and my journey I’m so grateful that I decided to be courageous and start with the little bit of hair I had on my head. I started to go the route of getting extensions because I wanted to be “confident” and I had friends encouraging me to start them that way if that’s what would make me comfortable but something about it just didn’t feel right to me personally. I’m almost a year into my journey and of course because my hair was so short when I started it’s still super short but I’ve learned so much about myself along the way. I’ve learned how to love and fully accept myself for me. Some days I walk out the house and I feel super exposed when I have my hair out but then at the same time I feel so free. My journey has taught me patience because it has not been easy coming outside when I feel like I look crazy lol but I’ve just learned to embrace all parts of the journey. Not knocking anyone who chooses to start their locs however they choose to start them but I really don’t think I would genuinely be as confident as I am today had I gone the route of extensions.. but that’s just my journey, everybody’s story is different 🤷🏾‍♀️

Someone else’s instant locs or loc extensions don’t impact my journey in any way. They don’t make my spiritual journey any less meaningful to me. Because I’m in my own lane and I don’t really worry about what another person is doing with their locs. I’m surprised that you feel that there’s this notion of “cheating” just because you chose to go through a process that someone else didn’t find meaningful. It just doesn’t impact you in any way. In this world we have to be more understanding because its already hella hate. you can have your thoughts but don't judge someone for doing what they need to do to get where they need to go. what if someone wants to finally show off the texture of they hair but they preference is not short hair. Not everyone wants to go as deep as the Rastafarian life style and spirituality but maybe they want to respect it and the black culture then maybe can motivate them to be a better person but wanted to do that to get there. When talk to people who have loc extensions they said they would go through all the budding and frizziness but the length is not to there liking and the loc extensions have to be in a mature state so they don't fall apart which make sense. So hear me out….everyone’s journey is THEIR OWN…I started my locs with permanent loc extensions they were very short loc extensions…NOW…I have cut them out actually today 3years and 8 months later…and yes you are correct a loc journey isn’t supposed to be a fashion thing…I PROMISE YOU I wish that I had of had the courage to start mines the traditional way because after a while I started to experience things on a spiritual level and I realized that the human loc extensions was causing issues from a spiritual level. Today felt great to get that mess out of my hair and I was able to see how beautiful my natural locs are I didn’t even realize that they were in the middle of my back…so now I am on a different journey since
I cut that mess out of my
Hair. So yes I would agree that permanent loc extensions are a big No No especially from a spiritual stand point

I’m not a fan of Extensions or faux locs it’s interesting how people want to be big and bad but don’t dare say anything they disagree on cause then you being insensitive

My issue with loc extensions is people talking about their “loc journey” as if it’s the same or relevant. Once you add extensions, your journey is not the same. Your hair doesn’t loc or even bud the same so you are speaking about experiences relevant to loc extensions, not locs as a whole and it’s not genuine.

lol this conversation is a whole big deal only in the USA. Because over here is in France nobody cares if you have in locs extensions or instant locs or want ever. Even the guys or putting in the extension. We do not care. We just be like hey locsy or want product u yours or do u do re twist or want ever we don’t JUDGE cause at the end of the day it’s your head and hair and you do want the hell u want.
Even if u start off as instant locs u still passing through the « ugly stage). It still shrinks it still buds.
Only over there discouraging and bring down ppl for joining the loc community.
Where u grow or add yuh hair is still loc!!! You still embracing having loc.
Where when those who had locs for years or started from the bottom coming out their loc oh it’s their hair, and ready for a change 🤦🏾‍♀️.
    Ok bye.

Love the videos, I’m always watching lol but you lost me at about 13 minutes…everything said post 13 was all about your preference and opinion just because you personally don’t like it…i totally agree about the extensions and instant locs and trying to skip through the journey but again that’s OUR opinions on that🤷🏽‍♀️& then the assumptions about who’s doing what to men based off of music when you said yourself you’ve twerked to her music not letting it actually affect your discernment in your daily life but you’re pointing your finger at those who do the same, and granted there def are those men/women who take inspiration from lyrics and whatever to try and trick on people or whatever but everyone’s different💯and i respect you sharing your views with us knowing they might not be necessarily favored but still allowing us to comment and have that dialogue👏🏽👏🏽

Definitely disagree with this. Fuk gratification. This is a hairstyle like any other. It makes me look at the person judging and say, “what makes u feel insecure about me cheating my way to locs?” It shouldn’t be that serious. People are so in love with their dreads that they don’t want just anyone waking up and having a full head of locs while they grew theirs for years. Don’t matter
