Useful info! I'm impressed you get by with those old drills. A couple of years ago, I picked up a Hercules drill from Harbor Freight, and it's way better than the old style drills. I had a decent Hitachi drill before but the HF one is better in every way. Metal chuck, more power, more speed, better build quality, better batteries. Might be worth looking into some day.

If they're particularly stuck, which happens once in a blue moon, you can spin up the chuck with the key and strike the floor with it, risky, and you have to prepare yourself that the thing will fly out of your hand, but when the hex key strikes the floor it will instantly loosen the chuck. I wish chucks were still like in the 80's early 90's when they had a thin wrench spacing for you to remove them after you removed the collar.

"Foiled by a left-hand thread", as the saying goes. This was a corded drill and I wanted to remove the chuck. In the old days, they didn't have this screw so knew nothing about this. Managed to turn the screw, the wrong way, until the head sheared of! Fortunately, the stump was quite loose and with a new screw of the correct kind all was well in the end. As for the breakage, I am in my 70s and this was just hand pressure. Guess it's never too late to learn!

I kept buying them at Sears, same as you RK. Always the Father’s Day or Christmas sales. The batteries would die in a year. So I bit the bullet and switched to dewalt. I never had a complaint about the craftsman tools. I still have a circular saw that is 45 years old that I inherited that still works like new. I have a bunch of Sears stuff. It was the big boy toy store.

    Well done.
I’m a fan of the green Ryobi drills. At Christmas, a drill, impact driver and 2 batteries and charger are on sale at HD for a hundred. Then, twice a year, the big 4 ah batteries go on sale, 2 for less than an a hundred. I got a set 3 yrs ago for $80.00. Regular price is a hundred each.
I use drill and impact all the time, no issues, with them or the batteries. I’m just a regular guy like you, always fixing something.
Be safe, you and the crew.

Ryobi made and still makes decent tools, for the most part. I'd steer clear of the gimmicky stuff, but drills, impacts, and grinders, they get my seal for whatever's worth. I particularly like the drills they made in 2017, i have a bunch of them.

Great tips! I have thrown away about 20 Nicad Sears drills with cheap keyless chucks. I saved the first 2 because they were Jacobs with actual metal. Now how about my 60 year old Rockwell 1/4" pneumatic drill chucks? Well...they don't really need much help. Magdad's Chuck would be proud of those. Just keep the Flitz to yourself, Chuck!
