I love the idea of adding Crosby once his contract is up. Colorado would clearly be his most likely landing place if he doesn’t re-sign in Pittsburgh. But if Habs can manage to clear up some cap space, and not do anything stupid like take on any new big contracts (Liane..), I think they could at least make an honest and respectable effort to sign him. Habs have a lot of good pieces in place, and adding Crosby down the middle right as Montreal is ready to make the move into contention would be absolutely perfect. And honestly, why couldn’t the fight for a championship as early as 2026/26 is their top 6 includes the likes of Crosby, Suzuki, Caufield, Slaf, Demidov? I might even consider trading for Letang preemptively if it would help make things more intriguing for Crosby to join

Crosby will probably take a trade to Mtl or sign there for next to nothing as a FA, he's spoken about Mtl before.

@@mrillis9259 I’d prefer not to trade for him for a couple of reasons. A) Pitts isn’t going to trade him for peanuts, and if we can avoid burning assets on acquiring Crosby, that’s more we have to acquire further talent (ie. Letang). Especially since his contract is up at the end of the year. B) This season is not the year to add a Crosby anyway. Just a touch too early. We still need 1 more year of development and evaluation for what we have in our system. As well as time to clear out some bad money.
As for him signing for next to nothing, you could be right. However, I believe Colorado is top of his list right now. Our only real advantage (besides sentimental) is the fact that for him to sign in Colorado he would no doubt have to sign for very little. They don’t have, nor would they have an easy time clearing up any significant amount of cap space. We, however, are in a place where we could afford to make a significant offer. Sentiment + $$$ would give us a respectable advantage. And if adding Letang could help to cancel out the Crosby/McKinnon factor, that would just be icing on the cake. But I don’t know how confident I would be just crossing my fingers for a “childhood dream” discount. I think that’s a nice tool, but I’d like to see layers of incentive

Pile on teams should go against legacy. There is no legacy left in Pittsburg, and it would be shitty financial calculus, not to start their rebuild the best way they can.
