You can definitely fit a lot in an Outback. This is one of the most efficient setups I've seen. Boy does he like cereal! ... and not dying :) Great job. Thanks for sharing!
What a lovely unassuming guy, with terrific ideas for making so much from a basically standard Subaru Outback. It also shows a way to try out the concept of Subaru Outback camping without committing to the considerable expenses of a car top tent and a professional fit out in the rear. Very generous of you to share your experiences. Loved the acrobatics from seat to bed, very useful though if pouring with rain or if a departure is necessary without exiting the vehicle. Thank you, all the way from Australia where the Subaru Outback is a very popular and competent vehicle.
Ethan has a very nice setup. I got a laugh at his comment. "You can call this video 'I don't want to die'." Hahahahah I like his shower. It was the first one like it I have seen.
This is pretty cool mate. Love the use of everything. I have a different wagon but wanted an outback but I use mine in some of the same ways but this is a bit next level. Nice one mate
In depth on the plastic crates lol. He should get a lift kit and upgrade the springs in the back. The car ass appeared saggy. I like the reflective material held by magnets and the bug netting. Really ingenious
Thanks you David for the tips on clipping tubs and magnets. Oh my gosh...I need to do MORE yoga to get in and out from sleeping ...lol You are really good at bending about.
Not sure how hot the places your travelling too are, keep in mind if it’s too hot the gas canister being in direct sun can be dangerous, would suggest covering it with something
Great no-build camper. Thanks for sharing it with us. But the contortions to get into the cot is a bit too much for me with back an neck arthritis. I would have to have the cot lower and enter from the rear hatch.
Neat little setup that works well for him. Id ditch the optima yellowtop for something of good quality though. Also having seat covers over seats with airbags is a terrible idea.
great video, presently im driving a 2003 leagacy wagon, its my fishing/camping mobile. i liking some of the ingenous way you set up your stuff. thanks i got lots of good tips/equipment to use from your vid. which model is this outback.? happy trails bro.
Because my in-camp battery use is so low, I'm considering getting a deep cycle battery for my truck and just keeping a "beatit" jump starter in the off chance I run the battery too low to start the truck. Keeping it simple and low cost.
Where did you get the auning and what brand is it again I was looking for something like that but I can’t seem to put it in on amazon. So can you let me know. Thanks
So what does he do to protect his belongings from theft ( the ones on the top rack ) when he has to go into stores to shop for supplies, etc. while on a trip? They seem very easy to steal with just the bungees, etc. it would be a giant pain to have to take everything off the rack and put into the car each time, esp. as there is so little room in the car already.
I don't think he has Beee, at least, not that he ever mentioned to me. He does have a skid plate underneath so that bottoming out doesn't damage anything vital.
I am currently facing a issue with subaru 2018 outback, when you drive over a bump or over bridge where there are pothholes , does the front door of driver side make any momentary noise. Noise is like something just went off the place and then snapped back in. On the smooth road drive, there is no such noise. Have you heard of any such noise?
I interviewed a friend for this video, I am not in a Subaru myself. This sounds like a question for a Subaru owner's group or forum, which I know exist. I know when I have problems with my rig I always go to an owner's group first for quality feedback. I hope it's nothing serious, good luck!
Ethan's under 6 feet I think, I'm not too sure. The best way to know would be to go to a dealer's lot and get inside an Outback for yourself and see how well you fit.
Choice. Ethan thought about getting a teardrop to tow behind it but loves the places he can get with just the car. He does a lot of back-country camping, rock climbing, etc.
I truly admire people who choose the unbeaten path in life. Who knew, you don't need to be an extrovert to have an amazing sense of adventure!

Glad you enjoyed this Peter!
Really neat set-up! Thanks for the tour, Ethan and Becky.
I plan to do something like this when my military service is up. Travel the country in my outback! :) Can't wait.
Death Valley is nice in the Winter.
Did it for two years too. 1998 Outback. Bought the Roof and Hitch Container for more room.
Becky, your videos make being off the road not so bad ☺ Thank you for sharing your insights and experiences.
I bought mine to camp in also. With two artificial knees I won’t be pulling that front to back maneuver. Sliding in and out of the back is fine.
I love Outbacks, great use for it too, Ethan.
Thanks for sharing, it’s always interesting to see how folks set their cars up. I think that young fellow was sweet on you🙂.

I love my Sport utility Wagon (SUW). If I get into van life this is what am going to convert my Subie outback into as well.
So good! I think I might steal some ideas for my 3gen outback. Cheers Ethan!
Nice setup...Thank you for the video. Blessings to you..
My friend is so cool ^_^ Thanks for sharing his setup, fun to see how he was living for a bit :D
Dreama Jeant
Just bought a 2019 Outback and was wondering about camping setups. This is a very cool way to go...
I see another fan of the storage bins from Costco! Those are my favorite too.
He should get a small roof top tent, he's got the rack for it. Love it.. great vid.
Scott Deney I have that roof rack it holds 150 pounds Safely. You can get your Subaru outback rack modified to hold one of the roof tents. $$$
Wow what an inventive person. Very cool setup. Thank you for sharing. I just subscribed. I can’t wait to see your adventures.
Really good set up, thank you for sharing it
Cool thanks for your tour
getting in and out of that bed keeps you fit. I like it.
In depth on the plastic crates lol. He should get a lift kit and upgrade the springs in the back. The car ass appeared saggy. I like the reflective material held by magnets and the bug netting. Really ingenious

Sweeeet set up man. Thinkin of gettin an outback soon. This helps a lot. Thanks.
Did you ever get your outback?
Anti -Wahhabi Action I did
Great no-build camper. Thanks for sharing it with us. But the contortions to get into the cot is a bit too much for me with back an neck arthritis. I would have to have the cot lower and enter from the rear hatch.
like this setup, it’s got storage but without building a platform.
Neat little setup that works well for him. Id ditch the optima yellowtop for something of good quality though. Also having seat covers over seats with airbags is a terrible idea.

I interviewed Ethan for this video, he doesn't have a channel of his own. I'll ask him and get back to you.
Thanks for the share. Great ideas & set up.
You're welcome, Ethan has such a good system!
I live in a outback too 👍 love it
Great video and setup! :)
What type of carbon monoxide detector did you get?
Because my in-camp battery use is so low, I'm considering getting a deep cycle battery for my truck and just keeping a "beatit" jump starter in the off chance I run the battery too low to start the truck. Keeping it simple and low cost.
Radnally i
Nice setup for small SUV gr8 job.
Outbacks are based off of the Subaru legacy wagons. I just call my Lifted SUW
Where did you get the auning and what brand is it again I was looking for something like that but I can’t seem to put it in on amazon. So can you let me know. Thanks
Hi:) I’m Ross your new viewer I really enjoy your style of videos and mission you do! Waiting for more great videos ! Thank you
Welcome to IO! Happy to have you here.
Wow thats alot of stuff, love subarus!

I don't know, it's not something we talked about. I very much doubts he moves that stuff, guess it hasn't been a problem so far.
Sometimes thieves pass on cluttered car they mostly just want ekectronics
great video. thanks for sharing.
Hes got everything, except headroom.
Love your video thank you so much how do you keep your reflux in the back windows with no magnets or metal??
Good question, I'm not quite sure how he did it. I suspect he just cut it so it fit snugly in the frame surrounding the glass.
been looking for a nice inflatable/store-able kayak - any suggestions??
Ethan's was Advanced Elements brand. But I heard he got rid of it because he used it so infrequently and space is at such a premium.
Is the Outback or Forester better for camper conversion?
what kind of wheels are those? Is your Outback a Premium or Limited ??
Have you considered installing a lift kit to give it more ground clearance?
I don't think he has Beee, at least, not that he ever mentioned to me. He does have a skid plate underneath so that bottoming out doesn't damage anything vital.
You eat a lot! haha jk very nice setup! nice All-terrains too. Happy traveling!

Cool, that could help. Nothing serious but just that this noise irritates.
Does Ethan have his own RUclips channel?
No he doesn't. He should though!
You are all set for the zombie apocalypse... :)
How tall are you? Im currently in a minivan and im 6'3 just want to know if a outback would work for me?
Ethan's under 6 feet I think, I'm not too sure. The best way to know would be to go to a dealer's lot and get inside an Outback for yourself and see how well you fit.
Hunter he said that the cot was 6 feet long if that helps
Wonderful
Nice
Wonder how much water capacity he has.
As I recall when we met, he had 2, 5 gallon jugs plus what he could fit in the shower.
Why does he live out of his Outback?
Choice. Ethan thought about getting a teardrop to tow behind it but loves the places he can get with just the car. He does a lot of back-country camping, rock climbing, etc.
Imagine finding out someone used to live in the used car you just bought..
Big people will find it difficulty moving like Spider-Man....
All that stuff on the roof rack is going to WRECK gas mileage
But hey, for a house it's still going to have great gas mileage. ;)
Haha your funny guy!
Krystine Kimes you’re*
Yeah, I need to lose some weight for that.
Great video, but lost interest in the video early.
