This is the best build I’ve seen! I have the same outback; color and everything! I’m a freelance videographer so it’s awesome to see how feasible you’ve made it to work on the road! The desk addition got me stoked. Subscribed!
I've got a Volvo V60CC -- which is extremely close to an Outback; I'm wondering how much tweaking I would have to do to make this design easily convert to my ride.
As an RV kind of guy, I stumbled across this video and decided to watch it, just on a whim.. more out of curiosity as to "how" you could possibly pull this off. Brother, I am impressed. Seriously impressed. I'm an engineer by trade, so fit, finish, and tolerances are my thing, and what you've done with this vehicle is nothing short of amazing. Nice work, indeed.
When I was 20-23 I lived in my Ford ranger in Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Montana, and California. It was an awesome adventure. Keeping a simple life is great. Good for you bud have fun.
You should do one of two things, or both: 1) Produce and sell a complete set of plans with a material list as well 2) Produce the kits for others to buy. Just today I looked at, and will most likely buy, the new 2021 Outback, I loved the vehicle. Your videos are by far the best I have seen.
What a nice build! That cabinet you made is great. It doesn't take up much space, especially compared to most builds that end up crowded. Nice design and a drawer!
Hands down the best Subaru Outback Camper Conversion! I have been undecided on buying a travel trailer or give it a go with my Outback, and your videos have helped me decide to give my Subaru a GO! I think travel trailers are great, but with the over saturated market and crowded camping sites, I love the idea of being able to truly explore in my Outback Bertha vs investing in an expensive trailer and later then finding it much harder to camp, than I would with car camping. Awesome video, awesome build, awesome mustache! 😊 👏🏻
Nice build! My Outback has something a bit more minimal so I can always keep the back seats and folding platform in the vehicle. I made Reflectix covers for my windows as well and added black cloth to them so it is super stealthy. I used cheap blackout curtains from Walmart, cut with about an inch of extra space beyond the reflectix. It is super easy to stick the fabric to the reflectix with 3M spray adhesive. I put them silver side out during the day, then swap them so I can have blackout curtain side out.
Glad I just came across your channel Chase and especially this video. I have been camping out of my 2015 Subaru Outback for the past 5 years. Always trying to make it more convenient and self contained. Spend a lot time in wilderness areas, national forests, and the like. I have to tell ya, you have done some genius things here to your Outback. I am going to have to study this video and start doing some building myself. I wasn't sure I wanted to remove the back seat, but your divers side back seat with the hanging table/desk is brilliant! Thanks for all the ideas. Take care fella.
Your build is really simple. I like it! My little Legacy used to have seats that laid flat, but the Subaru I have now has seats that don't. They have an incline like your's. I was hoping to use the Legacy, but it finally gave out on me. Now, I'm looking for ideas that I can use for this car. Thank you. Safe travels!
WOW! Chase when you said you have it "DIALED IN" you weren't just a kiddin!!! Amazing!!! Super Duper job. I have been looking for this conversion and thanks to you I now have a crystal clear plan. Thanks a million for taking the time to share with us. With HUGE gratitude 🙏
I love this build because of the innovative ideas with storage: drawer, under bed. Side table, and tables. This is a design that can apply to any SUV or minivan as well.
Alot of stuff for such a small area. Clean and organized. I was wondering what you do about bathroom issues. Thats a topic no one ever talks about when living out of a car.
@@ChaseChristopher1 the mustache throws my age perception off completely: plus/minus 10 years. same goes for bald, btw - a bald guy can look 10 years +/- his actual age. weird.
I am about to go on the road and will still be working remotely. Was thinking about wedging the "desk" tabletop into the glove box, your idea is so much better, thank you!!
I have been camping in my 19 outback several times this summer. Still working on making my kitchen take less space, as I have to set up everything outside. But a twin size air mattress fits perfectly in the back. I’m planning to switch to a Coleman slim twin soon so I can leave the single back seat up for the dog and to make getting in and out easier.
Nice setup for one person! I do backcountry trips in a Honda Fit, but would get something a little bigger if I change. I have no storage on roof and keep everything stowed inside at night so strive for minimal stuff. I evolved the same basic layout and “drive vs camp mode system”. Where your cabinet is, I bungee a box & bucket with cook kit and gear in the same space. No other “build”, other than removing the un-needed back seats, and a carpeted plywood piece cut to fit on the full size spare in rear pass side footwell to match up with flat rear floor area. This leaves me on floor level with no platform needed. Old lounge chair cushion under sleeping bag and I’m good to go. It flops in half backwards when not needed for driving, and the little dogs bed goes on that tire cover behind pass seat. Jacket always hangs off headrest and gives her a tent for shade and a place to hide. It’s her second home. She gets moved to drivers seat at night when camping. When I first contemplated how to get in & out for sleep time I tried the rear hatch but didn’t like climbing in with muddy boots on top of sleeping bag. I eventually went to using left rear door (where your seat / desk is) and I keep enough of that footwell clear so I can step in, pivot 180, and sit up straight on my sleep surface with feet on floor. No desk but I get by without. Sleep platform builds always seem to limit headroom? so you can’t sit up on bed? I’m 5’9” and have sitting head room , 6’ or more and nothing would work for me vertical or length wise! A few inches sometimes makes all the difference camping like this! What is your main in / out door when in camping mode? Are you climbing In over that plywood seat? Or does it flip up & back so you can step on floor? That seat would kill my foot space. I’m 66 and like to be able to wake, sit up, look around, fill the jar / dress & do boots etc. Specially if the weather isn’t something I want to jump outside in. The older one gets the longer it all takes. I didn’t like my rear hatch not opening from inside so removed a small access cover over lock and found a zip tie looped around release cable works perfect. I clip a small dog leash to zip tie that I can yank from anywhere inside car to pop the hatch. Can you get out the back end of a Subaru quick if needed?
This is the coolest. I just got my outback, and basically set up the same thing driving across for my move to DC. Would have been awesome to have the full build out.
I am watching this for the second time. I almost on my Subaru now so I can take out those backseats and try some thing like your build. I think it's the best one I've seen really ever in a Subaru. Thanks so much
Son, my 1st impression of you and this conversion, is this; "Wow 🤩 how creative are you?" Nicely done!! I would like to see some of you freelance creations, as well. Hubby and I just bought our 1st, Subie Outback, in November. We love the National Parks. I too am a photographer. Only way to go is camping like this. I see it as the best way to be where you need to be, so you can wait on the light. That being said, I believe this could be so seriously fun!! I can not wait to show him this.video! I may have questions: How do you make coffee, what is that gizmo? I wonder how you have enough electricity to run a Mac, plus they require wi-fi? Silly little details, lol Thank you for sharing this genius idea!!! I looks so affordable, as well.
You can get a small USB-C car charger powerful enough to charge a MacBook. I use the Satechi brand 72w charger. Macs have wifi like any other laptop, but don’t require to be connected to a network to function for normal computer work (apart from web browsing of course)
Andrew Wise, no kidding? Surprise 😳 It was my understanding that you have to have WiFi for a MAC to work. God’ loves you and is pleased with your kindness.
Thanks for the comment! It is a great vehicle for what you mentioned. The coffee maker is an aeropress, maybe ill make a video about it! The battery ( amzn.to/2Pa8XXD ) is enough to charge my laptop and other devices. I use my phone hotspot or coffee shop wifi for internet. How that helps!
Dude, that was pretty cool! I like the thin pull out from under the bed and your desk. You first showed it, I thought it was a good place to sit down on your bed with your feet a little lower.
Very cool, Chase! I just got a 2020 Crosstrek this past February, and I've been car camping 4 or 5 times so far -- still working out the kinks and getting my system down. On my last trip, I made the mistake of putting my Reflectix window blockouts on top of my car to dry out a little condensation, and I forgot they were up there when I packed up and drove off. Now they're terrifying cows all over northeastern Utah. :( Lesson learned. Thanks for sharing your setup!
I have a 2016 base model Outback. I know the backseat is taking up space but that’s my compromise. I just fold down one side (long enough for shortie me) to be sleeping area and put a gear trunk for cooking related stuff and an igloo ice chest as fridge on the other side. I have a 4x2 Lifetime folding desk that’s stealth and handy. I may customize a twin size mattress topper to fit the sleeping side for more comfort and insulation. The privacy net to reduce condensation is a great idea. I also love those window reflectors and cargo carrier on the roof. Thank you for the links and will head to Amazon to check them out.
This is pretty cool. I have a few years until retirement and the Outback may be my stopgap camping plan. I have a Jeep Rubicon now, but there is zero sleeping in that sucker. I managed two weeks cross country in my Honda Civic…this would be like the full lap of luxury!
Chase, what can I say, amazing setup and a lot thought put into your build. I love it especially the portable hanging table ( nice touch). Well done fella... I watch all you guys in USA doing the Forester/outback camper builds and am a huge fan. I follow another commercial photographer "Softroading the West" which im a big fan of. Keep on doing what you're doing. One life so live it...
That is sssoooooooooooo AWESOME!!!! I have always thought that I was a weirdo for loving station wagons. I have no kids, but I love wagons. Several years ago I traded in my Mazda 6 Sport Wagon for 2018 Mustang GT Premium with the Performance Package, guess what,,,,, I really miss my wagon and I salivate whenever I see the Outback wagons. Yours is incredible. You are highly skilled and creative.
Awesome video. I used to have a truck too then traded it of to buy a 2018 outback so I could do some camping. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Hi Chase! Extending a Hello from one Idahoan to another! I dig your setup! I'm working on turning my Nissan Xterra into my full time living space and this gives me more motivation! Hope your travels are treating you well!
Great job, Chase! I have a couple of outbacks but have not taken the leap in making it a camper. Thanks to your video I think I have the inspiration I need to proceed! Great idea with the rack. It's a very convenient that you can fit both a box and a basket. I definitely want to do the same to maximize storage space.
The ingenuity it took to create these modifications is something I can truly appreciate. Bravo, sir 🙏 edit: going to use your build as inspiration for my wife's outback 2.5i
love the "slide out" table surfaces for cooking in the rear... also could put nearly a full piece of plywood under the whole back area that slid out ..have 2 legs coming down.. and have a thanksgiving dinner ! ( tons of room)
Also, i like the minimal approach. You could convert this back into a normal car pretty easily, or so it would seem. Some people really go overboard with their setups.
Totally incredible, the best build ive ever seen in a subaru. Pondering copying this style you've established with slight changes to accommodate my size!
chase, first off, i think this is the best subaru outback coversion i've seen so far. Do you mind letting us know what roof cargo box model you have? that length looks perfect!
@@ChaseChristopher1 what year subaru outback is it as this is what I am going to purchase. Also, where did you learn how to convert it and make the slide out for the kitchen set up as well as the extension for your head when laying down? Im super curious about all of this! Very exciting
Hey Chase, new subscriber n I like your detailed explanations. What model is that little battery power bank and what fan make and size? Also, did you buy those bug screens or make them?
Excellent side cabinet..with 'integrated' rear 'passenger seat'.../ like the portable table too! nice 'slide out tables under bedding...Well 'thought out'!
This is awesome setup mate. I was thinking so long how to convert my LMPV for mini-camper & roadtrip, and then i'm seeing this; what a great idea. I really appreciate this. cheers mate.
Great set up and video. I was impressed with the window covering mesh initially but after using them I found they aren’t perfect! I love the ease of install and how well they work with rain guard but the elastic band at the bottom wicks in water as it becomes saturated camping in wet weather and basically wicks in water! It’s a slow wick but given heavy rainfall water is coming in! It’s a design flaw for wet weather camping, but works stellar for dry buggy conditions.
Thanks, Thomas! I usually do not use the window coverings when it is rainy as there are generally few bugs out where I live/camp. I have not experienced the water leak, but that's good to know! Thanks.
Love the way you really took advantage of every corner and space. Purchasing my Subaru very soon and headed out West as soon as I do. Curious as to what that gray material is that you put on the base of the little bed?
Just picked up a 2019 Outback and would love to use this same setup. Thank you for sharing, might need to reach out to you for further specs and measurements.
Excellent. I've book marked this YT and ready for action. Now all I need is the Outback for when I go outback Australia which will hopefully be mid 2021!!! We have had about 1000 corvid deaths here in OZ and I'm hoping the desert will be safer in'21. I must say that for an American you have done a great presentation without the usual American bravado BS. Well done.
Incredible setup ! What would you charge to build it if I wanted to get it done for my Outback? I am a photographer too and it would be so good to be able to camp out like this and be able to get up in the am to be able to do my photography
I just wanted to add something to my last comment, absolutely LOVE the desk idea, what a great idea as I will use your idea for my Subi. Great job. ps please let me know how long it takes to remove the rear seat. Thank you. Keep it up Chase as I have been camping, skiing, surfing, climbing, and backpacking for over 55 years as I am now 66.
nice build. i saw a similar set up made by a SoCal builder Solid Wood Worx. I have used his ideas for my 2wd Toyota, but now have a 2006 Outback that maybe someday will get a build like yours. thx for posting....
That is a very nice Outback. I currently have a Tahoe but I'm considering an Outback for camping. The only thing stopping me is that in my Tahoe I can sit on an emergency toilet if it gets to be very urgent. That seems unlikely in the Outback. Still a very good rig. You can go anywhere.
Cool conversion. Makes a convenient 'bug out' suv in case of zombies taking over the town/village. Add a power converter and car fridge then expand on creature comforts. For example a hot plate or power tools. There are mini dash sized solar panels you might use which would trickle charge a secondary battery.
Great video! Have a 2019 Outback. What are the dimensions of that drawer in the back where you keep your kitchen ware? Any issues with mounting the rack on top to factory crossbars?
Thanks Bryan! The kitchen drawer is right at about 8" wide x 10" tall by 20" deep. For the rack I did re-drill the outside mounts to move them in one member and spaced them out a little . This gave the space I needed for my cargo box and the correct alignment with the factory crossbars. It was a easy fix.
Really like the video. Love the setup. I have an Outback and will be building the drawer setup, also have the Jackery. Now you got me thinking about removing the back seats. I have a Roofnest for a bed but still like being able to lay down inside. Thanks for sharing and all the great ideas.
Great build! We built our car camper in a Kia Soul since that's what we already had and we're limited on options that are light enough to tow behind our RV. We live full time in our RV and part time in our car camper to go places the RV can't go. I'm going to look into a Subaru for our next upgrade.
Don’t forget accessing the spare tire in the event of a flat :( Nonetheless, this is an awesome build. I have a 2016 Outback 3.6R that I love. Have been looking into all sorts of options as we head off into ‘retirement land’ !!
Great build. I have same vehicle. Love the build. Problem is I need the backseats in mine. If I didn’t need them this would be the perfect build. Maybe in future.

i want to do this exact thing but raise the bed up a bit, i have a cat that would travel with me so id need to accommodate for that if she does
Great job, Chase! I have a couple of outbacks but have not taken the leap in making it a camper. Thanks to your video I think I have the inspiration I need to proceed! Great idea with the rack. It's a very convenient that you can fit both a box and a basket. I definitely want to do the same to maximize storage space.
Thanks Scott, I’m glad it helped you. Have fun with your build!
Excellent. I don't camp (my idea of roughing it is a hotel with no room service) but I have a Suby and this was fun to watch.
The ingenuity it took to create these modifications is something I can truly appreciate. Bravo, sir 🙏 edit: going to use your build as inspiration for my wife's outback 2.5i
Thanks 🙏 Please do!
love the "slide out" table surfaces for cooking in the rear... also could put nearly a full piece of plywood under the whole back area that slid out ..have 2 legs coming down.. and have a thanksgiving dinner ! ( tons of room)
Thanks! The tables have been a game changer for me. Yeah that would be convenient! Lots of options in a small package.
Sweet setup. If I get an Outback, I’d love to buy your plans to build my own!
Thanks!
@@ChaseChristopher1 Agreed. I plan on buying one soon
The best build man. We turned in our 2016 green outback and got the 2020, also green. Subaru rule!
Also, i like the minimal approach. You could convert this back into a normal car pretty easily, or so it would seem. Some people really go overboard with their setups.
Thanks! I agree, simplicity is key
You're a friggin genious this is awesome. I especially like the no nonsense compact kitchen storage cubby thing and the under bed cubby.
Thanks, glad you like it!
You should have a business to do car camper build outs! I’d hire you to outfit my forester!
It's like this you use what you got and make the best of it His little set up works for me...
120th Division Prepper Exactly 🤙
Incredible! So doing this on my 2019! Thank you for posting!
Brian Tapajna Thanks Brian! Have fun👍
Thanks! It is a Thule Cascade I believe. Its a bit of an older style and I'm not sure that its available anymore.
Portable table is so cool!! Man i love it
Thanks, glad you liked it!
When you close the truck gate, it makes some noise as well.
As things age, the tend to make weird noises. I'm a perfect example.
Yes, slightly annoying.
LOL
Excellent side cabinet..with 'integrated' rear 'passenger seat'.../ like the portable table too! nice 'slide out tables under bedding...Well 'thought out'!
gungfuriceboy Thanks!
Beautiful build; not ready to butcher my 2020 just yet. Also, Julian does a far better job keeping his drink in his hand all of the time. :D
Thanks! Haha I also only have coffee😂
This is awesome setup mate. I was thinking so long how to convert my LMPV for mini-camper & roadtrip, and then i'm seeing this; what a great idea. I really appreciate this. cheers mate.
Glad I could help!
This guy is blowing up overnight
🤙
Thanks.
You can purchase window screens with a small awning attached for rain ..
Wow, this is so awesome. Do you have some tips for us less clever folks on how to get the outline right for the platform?
Thanks! yes, use cardboard cutouts. Ill be making videos soon to help explain it more.
You are the only person I have seen that has both ski box and basket on the roof!!! Been looking everywhere
Love the way you really took advantage of every corner and space. Purchasing my Subaru very soon and headed out West as soon as I do. Curious as to what that gray material is that you put on the base of the little bed?
Thanks Risa! The gray material is a carpet covering over the wood platform. It is attached using contact adhesive and staples. Have fun!
That kitchen slides are smooth
Just picked up a 2019 Outback and would love to use this same setup. Thank you for sharing, might need to reach out to you for further specs and measurements.
Thanks, Matt! Good luck on your build!
Excellent. I've book marked this YT and ready for action. Now all I need is the Outback for when I go outback
Australia which will hopefully be mid 2021!!! We have had about 1000 corvid deaths here in OZ and I'm hoping the desert will be safer in'21. I must say that for an American you have done a great presentation without the usual American bravado BS. Well done.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed😊
I love this so much! It’s perfect👍🏻
Thanks Joanna!
Love the sliding shelves! Great planning.
Glad you like them!
Amazing! What’s your plan if you need access to your spare tire?
Thanks! I would have to remove 6 bolts to grab the tire, about a 5 minute process.
This is SLICK, got plans to do something similar to my new crosstrek. The newer videos and website will be my main resources for sure
Hey, I'm from Ada County too!
It's a great place!
Cool. I really like the pull out cooking platform.
8:00 me after eating beans in the morning
😂😂
Beautiful job! So tidy.
How tall are you? are you comfortable sleeping in it? I am 6' and looking to buy a Subaru Forester or Outback
Sister Wendy I’m a hair under 6’ and it’s plenty comfortable for me. I sleep stretched all the way out too.
nice build. i saw a similar set up made by a SoCal builder Solid Wood Worx. I have used his ideas for my 2wd Toyota, but now have a 2006 Outback that maybe someday will get a build like yours. thx for posting....
This video is so helpful and straight forward, thank you! Do you have an instagram so we can follow along on your adventures modifications?
Thanks for watching! Yes, I do @chase.t.c (link in the video description)
Fun set-up, love that back seat, computer table set-up. Nice work! Thanks for posting.
You bet, thanks for watching!
What did the total cost end up being for this build? I'm trying to budget my Subaru conversion :)
Tough to say, but for materials alone I would guess it was in the 600-800 ballpark.
Nice job! I am a photographer and I work out of my outback. Would make a carabiner desk for me?
Thanks Shawn! Absolutely, I would be happy to consider that! Could you email me ctchristopher10@gmail.com ?
Cool conversion. Makes a convenient 'bug out' suv in case of zombies taking over the town/village. Add a power converter and car fridge then expand on creature comforts. For example a hot plate or power tools. There are mini dash sized solar panels you might use which would trickle charge a secondary battery.
Thanks! Good ideas, the options are endless 👍
Ha !! A................. "tear-drop Car " ................ nice... great job
Glad you liked it!
Super sweet! Love how you've utilized all the space!
Thanks! 😊
@@ChaseChristopher1 You're most welcome! :)
But something without a CVT and 4 Cylinder. Any other brand is better for this
Subaru is an LGBT vehicle turned into a family car.
Chad Haunschild Right on, sounds like you shouldn’t get a Subaru👍 I dig mine.
@@chadhanson4369 I didn't realize cars had genders! Thanks for the valuable information!
Dammit I’d be so pissed doing a fuel pump in this thing.
Haha The camper comes out very quickly and easily- then you'd have great access!
Subaru fuel pumps don’t go bad often.
Don’t forget accessing the spare tire in the event of a flat :( Nonetheless, this is an awesome build. I have a 2016 Outback 3.6R that I love. Have been looking into all sorts of options as we head off into ‘retirement land’ !!
Flexing with those Crocs at ready access. Sick build dude!
The #crockloft is ready to rock. Thanks!
Great build. I have same vehicle. Love the build. Problem is I need the backseats in mine. If I didn’t need them this would be the perfect build. Maybe in future.
Man, this is very cool, i mean the way you have built this. Awesome!
Thanks a lot!
