What does post soviet Russia has to do with all of this? Demnas Georgian and his work reflects on soviet and post soviet Georgia. Therese a huge difference between post soviet Russia and post soviet Georgia they became different countries and always had completely different cultures although both have been previously influenced by soviet union.
@@claws811 ??
Congrats on the project, it is really insightful and Vetements is really well suited for this excercice !
I just want to add my 2 cents on Demna's irony and its impact on local Georgian fashion, based on my own experience of Georgia. As mentioned in your video, the looks presented are familiar to anyone living in post-soviet countries as it is EXACTLY how Georgian youth used to look un-ironically and looks like now, ironically. What I've found absolutely brilliant about Vetements' international aura is that it made Georgian local sens of fashion (creating looks from whatever you find in 2nd hand shops, from humanitarian aid and fake brands imported from nearby Turkey's huge textile industry) into a worldwide trend as well as a fashion prank on the wealthy. From the civil war in the 90s, Georgia's new state developed in a context of chaos and highly unregulated market, where a few got insanely rich and powerful while the rest of the population still lives in deep poverty. There is no middle class in Georgia: you have on one side the young student taking the old soviet bus dressed in all-synthetic fake brands and some random t-shirts from the thrift shop, starring the logo of a local Germany volleyball club no one has ever heard about... and people dressed in full real Prada driving their BMW G-Wagon on the shitty roads of Tbilisi. Since Vetements got international, these insanely rich people of Georgia are now dressed exactly like the young kid working at the local liquor store because they now shop at Vetements and Balanciaga. To me, this is the ultimate power and irony of Vetements : empowering the disadvantaged Georgian youth by making them the aesthetics of the local oligarchs.
this is like the best interpretation of vetements i've heard
Brilliant
Sending my love to Georgia from Romania. I completely understand and relate to what you are saying. At the same time, I am happy that Demna succeeded in refining the best that could be extracted from the moda-povera of Eastern Europe and creating a new type of elegance - it's not just irony.
I love this a lot! Thank you for sharing your experience, I cant help but feel so empowered for those kids. beyond beautiful
So how is the empowerment working out for the Georgian youth? Are they still poor? Poor, but happy people find them trendy? I don't mean to be rude but I came here to learn more about Demna and why he styled that ad campaign they way he did.
Being from Georgia myself, all the references to the soviet union and Georgia specifically are really interesting to me. I read one of the comments saying the clothing reminds them of what people actually dress like here, and I agree. It's ironic how expensive the Vetement's clothes are and how now, it has become clothing that the people from other "social classes" wear. I love your channel and these videos, and it was especially interesting watching different people's take on Demna's work.
this is what I've thought of...very post-ironic...
it's weird how the rich and wealthy always want to embrace and misappropriate the poor's culture in some way.
I don’t think they dress like this in Atlanta 🤔
@@i_is_here8000 I might be missing something, but how is it “post-ironic”? It seems like simple irony to me, I’m not seeing any extra layers

I think the anarchy motif is in no way a criticism of anarcho-socialism especially if you look at Denma's work as a whole. By far the most common thread throughout all of his work is satirizing consumer capitalist culture so it's hard for me to believe that he would turn around and say "well socialism is also bad as you can see from the anarchy symbol being upside down". I think it's much more likely a criticism of the cooptation of more radical leftist ideas to fit into capitalist culture (take for instance the new Disney-owned Cruella movie whose identity revolves around anarchistic ideals).
this is fantastic. I gained so much in-depth understanding of Vetement's collection by watching this. thanks man!
lol And you styled like Our Generation
the upside down anarchy symbol also makes a “V” if that wasn’t obvious
Vlone thug Denma
Well yeah, someone literally said that in the vid
It stands for VETEMENTS, right? lol
Demna Gvasalia is the greatest troll of our times.
Everybody go watch this woman’s channel. She rules
But what about Philip Plein ?
LoL And you styled like My Generation and Culture
it's pronounced dacha, like [ˈdæʧə], ch sound is just like in chat or chapter etc.
This made me fall in love with fashion again for a really long time. I love demna and missed this show but damn I love fashion. The art is beautiful and so meaningful that actually has depth to talk about with each garment. Do more balenciaga pls because demna isn’t really creative director of vetements anymore...!!!
I have been dying to know what the "MADE IN EUROPE" reference was from for two years now. Thank you to the individual who brought it to your attention, and thank you for sharing. Great video!
As a Georgian person here, I actually think that the EU logo with one star missing might represent the idea that Georgia has been trying sooooooo hard to officially join the EU and still hasn’t been able to. It’s a common joke here that we wanna belong to europe so badly and yet europe couldn’t care less about us honestly lmao. Also, I do feel that the essence of Vetements is !truly! satire.
Some of the references feel too teenagery and childish
i strongly disagree on the analysis on demna’s views on anarcho-communism. any disdain towards the soviet union’s authoritarian regime is a dislike for state capitalism as the idea that the soviet union was communist was a farce. anarcho-communism necessitates communism with a lack of different levels and classes of power, something evidently present in the soviet union.
disagree with the point on the upside down anarchy top in this only because it feels pretty important that the upside down anarchy symbol here is forming a "V." he's definitely mocking anarchism to some extent, but by inverting the symbol, he also brings it closer to his own brand. plays well with the rest of the half-parody half-appropriation he's doing elsewhere in the show.
The project was soooo fun and this episode is sooo exciting it made me understand and appreciate Demna’s work more and more even though it was hard for me to understand the collection at first but now I know that it’s coming mostly from his background and his love for music and art. So grateful and hope to participate in more analyzing in the future
yo the "this website has been seized" hoodie ties into the silk road reference. After FBI caught the guy behind silk road they wiped out the site and placed this message there instead.
This show is fascinating, off-putting, evocative of the socio-historical, bold, funny and deeply frightening. The sort of clothes you could see at a seedy club or, in fact at a riot in Washington DC (referring more to the flag play at Vetements ss19). This is ironic luxury, stripped of aspirational cliches. A viewer is well within his, her or their right to hate these clothes, and that only serves to heighten the potency of the performance. One of my favorite shows, and some of my favorite clothes, of the past few years
I love vetements, but I'm ngl, it's incredibly presumptuous that he thought only the Soviet Union was poor? Lol. Asian communist countries were also extremely poor and war torn. Interestingly I think there are some overlaps in fashion statements here
We need to protect you by all costs! This type of videos literally gives me chills, I’m always too damn excited 😄
13:08 I have military family who actually have bald spots (obviously not to this extreme) that came from wearing their helmets/ protective gear
I think the upside anarchy sign is a talk on how commodification has abstracted and takes Revolutionary aesthetics in order to delude them and remove the message instead of just a general diss on anarcho communism
"I LOVE MW" hoodie may refer to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Just like the cap you mentioned!
What people in the west usually don't understand is how similar fashion shopping, luxury industry and the whole subculture surrounding it is similar to everyday shopping experience in the eastern bloc. Food and other items were distributed as 'drops', and you had to know people to get a good position in the queue to buy this stuff first. You buy ANYTHING regardless, because later you may exchange it for something else. Everyday consumer goods were similar to Hermes bags and the way they were distributed was very similar.
I’ve always been super interested in Vetements and own a few pieces at the moment, but I never thought it went this deep. This is super interesting and an overall well made video !
“Well guys, maybe being evil is not so bad.”🤣😂🤣
A note on the look from 13:12. Maybe he is making a refrence to someone becoming a skinhead (not fully shaven head) plus the black boots
Someone called Vetements a “Diet Balenciaga” and I think that’s really insulting tbh because Demna uses this as his other creative outlet imo
There’s crossover for sure, but it’s definitely a different energy to it
while in fact Balenciaga is a "Diet Vêtements"
The sweatshirt you're wearing is absolutely fantastic! I failed to find it online, though... may I ask where you acquired it?
Hamcus 💫💫
Super late, so someone might've pointed this out but I'm pretty sure the B on the Hocus Pocus hoodie is also the logo of the Mexican snack company, Barcel.
I've been watching this video at least once a day for about 2 weeks now. I can't get enough of it. I truly appreciate these videos.
Wow I’m honored! I’m so glad it’s been useful for you, Tiffany 😊
@@BlissFoster I'm honored that you replied back! Really! Sorry this is such a late reply.
I LOVE Hamcus! They really have the coolest sweaters! That being said, Vetement is such an interesting brand and Demna really is a visionary.
this was amazing! can you make another video about other VETEMENTS runway show please?
After watching this video and the one about Balenciaga there’s one thing that strike me. The trend they are trying to portray is very in line with what is going on right now in 2020/21 with this stupid pandemic. A lot of security presence, online or offline. Conformism, socialization of the media. I like the presidential sweater with the corporate mocking jeans as if he’s like a NASCAR or F1 driver with all the sponsorship endorsement. Ironic indeed. I don’t want to sound crazy but these ppl from all those houses are very well informed/connected.
That thing you wearing is fire
babe wake up new bliss foster video
Every 10 days 💫💫
@@BlissFoster talk to em bliss 🗣️🗣️🗣️
beginning of this video: vetements trash all they do is blank hoodies with text
end of this video: damn vetements kinda deep
Omfg the “crewneck?” And the nails 💯
I think the green hair, white hoodie with the silk road logo look is a direct reference of Rou Rot, a member of CRIM3S, one of the bands to pioneer the witch house sound and aesthetic in the early 2010s. He rocked camo a lot and if you google image his name and scroll down a bit you'll find a flick of him with the same greasy green hair in a camo jacket and hoodie.
Also SALEM one of the biggest bands in the genre recently made a resurgence after years of silence and released merch incorporating the silk road logo with their own on a white t shirt just like this hoodie. That was less than a year ago though so maybe they got it from here?
just wanted to point out that "ch" in "dacha" is pronounced the same way it would in the word "cheese"
thank you for these analysises by the way! extremely entertaining and insightful stuff
I love being corrected, thanks for the info 💫💫
would love to see a video on understanding gosha rubchinskiy
Excellent video. Love seeing you dive into shit like this especially with help from fans because it offers such a multicultural perspective
The bell was kurt
I'm gonna give you shoutouts in my new album
Can you please post a link to your work?
I watched this video for the first time while having dinner, now I 'm going to watch it again to fully enjoy the expecience. Great content!
The model and outfit at 1:53 is crazzzzzy🔥
Hell yeah, my favourite brand and designer in one, you can't go wrong!!! 🙌
Can I just say it? Immature audience will enjoy this, but it essentially is fast fashion with a message that has no substance. It is a collection of random references aimed to sell to as broad of an audience as possible. I see no quality, no taste, no usefulness. Go to a second hand boutique and combine these yourself.
Y’all are taking it too seriously. If you want to wear something, wear it. Don’t worry about what other people are going to think, even if it’s Gucci print, lmao.
great video . demna's 16-19 seasons at vetement are some of my personal favorite collections from his and the styling is very thought provoking to say the least . glad someone covered this
Loved this video! And the idea of us adding our interpretations and helping you find the different references!! This was very insightful, and I can’t wait for more videos to come! :)
I feel like the upside down anarchy symbol is just there because it looks like a V for Vetements (or Vendetta)
william eyelash 😂
One of the sickest videos you have, now will spend all my money on vetements
That was true! what you read in the start
The fit & this video is insane!
Thanks for all!
can you please tell me what piece are you wearing, because it looks fire my friend!
Sweatshirt is Hamcus, that brand is incredible
i own the leather jacket with the face covering , and tan one
Reporting in from eastern Europe, vetements is my favorite
Incredible video bliss I so appreciate the time and dedication to making these videos and this one along with all your others have taught me so much about fashion and art and I sincerely thank you and hope you keep this up
I don’t think I could stop if I tried 💫💫
Gotta love Our Bliss
This really opened my eyes on demna. Looking back, it’s prob his best work yet, hopefully more to come
bro i think that u r very cool
Ну что пацаны, поняли как нам повезло родиться на постсоветском пространстве?))())
I'm not sure if anyone's commented this already, but the militant uniform that feels 'nazi-ish' literally has the swastika embroidered on the upside down pocket, noticed this in the close-up lmao
I know I know I know. But I can’t wait for this era to finish. It’s not only soviet. Cos we used to wear this in the early 2000s. And it’s a boring repeat. And I hope it doesn’t last as long as the skinny trend. 🙄
\m/ chrome nails \m/
Yes of course the upside down anarchy symbol is a direct comment on the anarcho communist principles… also it’s a big V for Vetements 😂
Vetements with Demna was so beautiful 🤩🤩🤩 cant get enough of it
hey! just followed you on patreon and absolutely love what you do! the episode is fantastic. just wanted to correct you on something really small - dacha (Russian country house) is pronounced with a ch (like chair) and not an h.
Ayyyyy thanks so much for the support!! 💫💫
This is crazy
The Vetements Universe
I thought the seized website page was another reference to the takedown of the silk road.
I believe it is! 💫💫
@@BlissFoster thanks! another great video btw.
the 0:28 look reminds me of the matrix
I love that Courtney weighed in to roast it. That's 100% Courtney behavior.
Ok long clock over the hood sure but surely it would be improved with lenses. Most of my Hoodies are now converted to Hoodovers and sure it's easier to see through ski goggle ; safety glass and glasses stitched into the hood than it is to see through the fabric...sounds like a no brainer but hey if it was Fashion it would have glasses, thus it is Art as has no usefulness ..oh wait, it stopped ppl peeking over their shoulder. OK first vid of yours I have watched, good fluid presenting style, thanks.
We are on Monday of Holy week 160 in the Apocalypse day 1114 in Revelation of God.
Your heavenly brother Charles Andrew Oyedele Ososami.
Peace
11:14 Not only Kurt Cobain but also such or similar dresses are quite famous among 90s women in their 40+ in postsoviet countries (Ukraine for example) even now you can see grandmas wearing them and they are sold at the markets (usually open, or street)
Can u do something about Walter van Beirendonck ? I feel like he’s kinda blowing up and I don’t know anything about hin
Demna - a crazy man.
Great watch 🔥🔥🔥
love your work fam
Please do a review on Demna at Balenciaga as I'm starting to think its all hype and pretty overrated
I did this same project for Balenciaga last year! Look up “Understanding Demna’s Balenciaga” 💫💫
As a Georgian I can only see Demna as a grand troll since most of his pieces look like clothes Georgians wear but want to stop wearing them if only they had money to afford better ones.
I'm trying to understand the mindset behind the aesthetic. Are these clothes for wealthy people to cosplay being poor? Is he deliberately trying to make wealthy people look foolish? Or does he really love the Georgian style and is honoring it by making it high end and aspirational rather than something born out of necessity due to extreme poverty?
@@morgantaylor517 Nobody can honestly like such outfit style, they are just clothes that were available with the lowest possible price tag, plus those aren't authentic Georgian clothes, most of them were made in Turkey, they were just cheap, to put it in perspective such clothes weren't even sold individually, they would come in a box which were full of random clothes, you would buy said box. My best assumption is that he is trolling elites by 'forcing' them to wear what he was forced to wear as a child and adolescent.
It reminds me of Rafs 2001 Riot Riot Riot collection being based off of Eastern european youth culture fashion
Love you Bliss you give me more knowledge of fashion I always say im gonna research but Im too lazy to look up lol you are a life saver.
On this one it’s all the work that the group put in! I’m really grateful to have an audience that’s so good at analysis 💫💫
this was absolutely amazing! Been waiting for this episode forever
New to this channel - this video was soooooo good wow
I think the warning symbol or at least how the whole text is styled is a reference to the jackass warning at the beginning. And the skull drawn on the caps also looks similar to the jackass logo.
What kind of a fingerpainting halfwit suggested the Soviet Union was “anarcho-communist”? 😂
My comment appeared 😻
Its funny because the UK left the European union so the star being missing is some foreshadowing
I think the Birthday hoodie is more akin the auto generated Facebook/Amazon shirts. Makes a bit more sense with the internetty themes of the first half of the show.
Lol Vetememes is so edgelord
you are so much fun! i love learning new things from you!!
This video made me join the Patreon, supporting Boss Bliss fam! priceless content.
Yooooo 🙏🙏 tysm!!!!
Look 41 immeditely reminded me of Britney 2007 breakdown!!
Vetements style = Rip off a style from the 80s or 90s + Make it Oversized + Put the word Vetements on it and charge $1,000....If anyone tells you that you look stupid just say "You don't understand fashion!"
Ayyyyy you got it! 😊
Omg 15:00 .! That blew my mind and so magnificent. I always think about that problem
Bliss always dresses well he reminds me of my older brother who would make his own clothes with fine materials. We always would steal each other’s pieces
pls do a video on ann demeulemeester
She’s on the list!!
the warning on the first shirt reminds me of an intro to an episode of the twilight zone, I can hear Rod Serling speak those words!!
I love it
