  • Some quick little tips to help people out there when it comes to charging Lipo batteries. I know there can be a lot of numbers and things to understand when it comes to batteries and it is important to get them right because Lipos can be dangerous in used incorrectly. Happy flying everyone. If you found this helpful leave a like so can help other people too.
    Like what I do. Support and help me grow the channel at / uavfutures every little bit helps and will allow me to make more videos like this more often. Big thanks to the people who already do support the channel. You guys rock. Happy flying
    EDIT: I accidentally said miliamp hours instead of amp hours at points in the vid, But im sure you get the idea : )
    TIP: If you're using this charger (Turnigy Accucel-6 80W) to charge fat shark batteries you'll need to upgrade the firmware of this charger! You can't balance charge fat shark's batteries so you'll end up with an error by default. Here's the link to the firmware. hobbyking.com/... Download "ACC6 80W firware v1.13 patched to fix balance connect error" and follow the instructions inside!

    I have grown up with those chopsticks!
    They have always been "the" preferred chopsticks over the fancy lacquer or plastic ones in our household for 50 years. Way better grip on your food! They also are just handy around the house for all purposes as you know!

    Just a little mistake, you said .1V difference per battery, but it is per cell, do on a 3s they can be .3v apart, and on 4s .4V :) having them closer is better of course, if mine are a little closer to the .4v apart I just leave them in for a few minutes before I start the charge so they balance. Also in the beginning you kept saying 1.4 milliamphours, haha. Quite a small battery ;) 1.4 amp hours. Just being nit picky, it was a great video and will help lots of people :D

      I am not sure the voltage difference works according with the number of cells, whatever the number of cells of the LIPOs, i have always charge my batteries with 0.2V difference max per cell. Another important point for me is you have a LIPO with one bad cell, don't charge it in parallele with other LIPOs, there is a risk that this LIPO could damage all the other LIPOs.

    • @TheRCAddict
      @TheRCAddict 8 лет назад +1

      ABMNS PRODUCTION It is by number of cells...but everyone has their own "standards" but you should never exceed .4 total for a 4S. Some people only charge at 1C, but I do 2-3 if I need them quick, so it really just depends on how much you know and trust about your gear :)

    • @R2GO
      @R2GO 8 лет назад

      sorry still don't get this.
      could be because I'm not English and it will not get into my fat head. lol.
      Please bare with me.
      I'm talking 4S here.
      So is it .4V difference per BATTERY or per Cell?
      let's say i have Lipo's perfectly balanced. one is 14V and the other 14.4. that's a .4 difference per LIPO. but only .1 per CELL.
      Or is it .4 difference per Cell of ALL the lipo's going to be charged in parallel.
      So let's say between 3.5V and 3.9V between cells.
      That's a .4 difference.
      Because then the voltages PER LIPO can get between 14V and 15.6. If they came down perfectly balanced and the 14V Lipo is 4x3.5V and the 15.6V battery is 4x3.9V.
      you get what I'm saying?
      So can somebody please clarify this before I burn down the house with me, my wife my son, and the cat in it :D

    Awesome tips m8 but allow me to comment on something which might get you into a revised already awesomeness. You can equalize the batteries voltages by just letting them rest on the parallel board (main leads and balancing connectors). so if you have one 3s bat with 3.70/3.71/3.70 and a second one with 3.4/3.41/3.42 within a few minutes resting them on a parallel board, both batteries will have similar cell voltages and ready to be charged in parallel. (ps: of course I am talking for same batteries, cells, capacity and discharge rate) Thanks again for your video. keep em coming. I really enjoy your channel!

    Hi folks,thanks for great video.
    just my 50 cents of info to improve this guide.
    There is few bad scenario still exist when you connect all this cells in parallel,each and
    every pack & cells have different internal resistance so the consequences might be harmful because of next reasons:
    1- not equal current flowing in each cell (you better not charge whole pack at its 1c,for example 5 packs 1000mah each not so safe to charge at 5 amps),safest side is to charge at C rating of 1 pack which is far over protection but u decide.
    2- if you have one bad cell the balancing process might take way more time and potentially damage all of your packs at same cell number.
    so be careful and better of all write on each battery pack it's cell internal resistance and try to match packs as much as possible.
    BR all.

    Great video. I never charged my LIPO at 1C lol Always 1/2C. For me one crucial point when charging in parallel is to make sure that all these LIPOs have healthy cell. One LIPO with a bad cell can damage all the other LIPOs.
    Thanks a ton for sharing Stuart and have a great week

    • @CrobleFPV
      @CrobleFPV 8 лет назад +1

      1/2c is a bit under kill. 1c should be fine if you want to keep you batts in good shape but I don't really think it would hurt the cell to charge them at 1 1/2c but it might reduce the Mah you can put back into the cell. I charge 3 4s SMC 37a 1300Mah packs at 5.3 amps but I should charge them at 3.9amps because that's 1c. If your in a rush to fly charging them normally or at 1 1/2 shouldn't really hurt them at all. If you have a slightly puffed/damages pack with a bad cell then definitely charge it separate.

    • @blackmennewstyle
      @blackmennewstyle 8 лет назад

      Crøblë FPV There is nothing under kill, LIPO had been designed for delivering power not storing it :)
      The less C rate you use when charging your batteries, the more longer and the more better they will perform because you don't hurt the chemistry inside them like you do when charging at higher C.
      Of course you have also to be careful and do not push them beyond their limits while discharging and you should also respect the basic rule of putting them on storage state when not using even for a short period.

    great video Stu! I just throw my batterys onto the parallel board with no balance leads to balance Eachothers voltage for 10 mins then I connect the balance leads for another 10 mins... that way when I go to charge them again they are all the same cell voltage... I typically do that at the end of a day of flying (useing the same methods that you use for charging e.g. same cell count and mah ratings)

    If this were my video, I would've mentioned to not leave the batteries alone while charging, and probably recommended some sort of LiPo-crarging-pouch, as those greatly limit the possible damage of LiPo explosion. Also, the craging area should be clear from flammable materials. Friend of mine survived from LiPo explosion with black floor and little shock, but if there were anything flammable around, the result would've been a lot more sad. That being said, your video told a lot of important things many would never figure out by themselves.

    These Turnigy chargers have a handy voltage tester that can be found on the BATTERY/PROGRAM level of the menu, which shows all the cell voltages on screen at once, when you connect the balance plug. It's a bit quicker than using the portable tester and having to wait for it to cycle between cells.

    For anyone wanting to know the math, remember P = A * V. So you need to multiply the voltage (11.1 here) times the amps to figure out the power draw. His charger was only an 80 watt charger, so 11.1 amps * 7 amps would draw 77.7 watts of power. That is probably too much for this charger, I have heard you should always leave 20% headroom for any power supply. So for 80 watt charger, probably don't put more than 64 watts through it.

    Just a tipp: Lithium cells don't like high charge rates. The oxide layer on the electrodes inside the cells cloggs faster with higher charge rates and so the cells "degenerate" faster. Just charge them at ~0.5C, that's actually the recommended charge rating from the manufacturers (Just take a look at Datasheets from LiIo/LiPo cells from LG Chem, Panasonic, Sanyo (sony), Samsung...).
    TL;DR: The lower the charge rating, the more happy the battery is (:

    Excellent video and g'day from Canada :) Do you know or have you ever tried using the balance board to place multiple batteries in storage mode? Often when I come back from the field and I have multiple batteries, it would be so much easier if I could put 6 batteries at a time in storage mode, just wondering if the balance board would work safely and properly for that as well. Hey Stu - great content as always but please let your viewers know that the current AC version of this charger will not charge Fatshark batteries. It does have a CHARGE mode (as opposed to BALANCE) however it still requires a balance lead :( I already went through this and had a friend suffer through the same. I have those 65C 1400mAh multistar batteries in 4S. They get the job done and are reasonably cheap.

    For me. I will be charging (2) 7.4 2S 5200mah 50C batteries. My set up for the amperage will be 10.4A for an hours charge for the two. I am better off not parallel charging because I be charging two at 5A for 2 hours Either way I still get done the same time if doing one at 5.A, or two at 5.2A? I will be needing a battery checker. thank you

    if charging is through the skinny wires, then why do we need to hook up the 2 thick wires?

    If you are in a rush, most chargers have fast charge... Charges to around 95%, the last 5% or so takes along time.Also if you have the time charge at 0.5C make the battery last alot longer.

    I would recommend buying a parallel board with replaceable fuses just as an extra safety precaution

    • @UAVfutures
      @UAVfutures  8 лет назад

      good tip, as long as the fuse is small and will actually blow before the battery

      I have the same question. I ordered this exact charger and it doesn't come with that black cord with the female xt60. Help us please 🙏

    Great video Stu. I now have enough batteries, that I need to a parallel charge board. I love your channel and I always get a lot out of it. Thanks. I do have a couple questions. First, where did you get those XT60 connector covers? Also, I saw a video of yours, where you showed a really cool USB charger deal that you connected to one of your LiPo's for charging in the field. Do you recall, what I'm referring to and if so, which video was that? I would love to pick one up. Thanks again for all the content. Your channel is my favorite.

    Question: For years I have had RC scale off road trucks that required the lipos to charge using both the regular connector and the balancing connector, but recently I started flying fpv quads, and now my fat shark battery charges using only the power supply and then I have a Rise vusion battery that charges using only the balancing connector.. WTF?

    I know this video is a few years old. Is the Turnigy Accucel-6 80W | 4 Button still a good charger or are a lot of folks using something different now. Just getting into FPV...thx!

    I can't find a charger that'll charge at 25.9V for my lipo they all say 2-20V what do I do?

    I also recommend covering the deans connector on the board to avoid accidental shorting.

      I have 2 huge gold banana plugs sticking out of my charger (1cm apart) for years and I never shorted them out (it actually makes me extra careful when charging batteries)

      newbie here..what happends if accidentally plug one of the balance leads the wrong way and short the board? can I still use it?

    • @UAVfutures
      @UAVfutures  8 лет назад

      it won't actually fit the whole way in, but it might make a small amount of contact which will result in a short...smoke, fire. you know.. the good stuff : )

    • @youtubeadmin6333
      @youtubeadmin6333 8 лет назад

      +UAVfutures .. I was able to make a little contact and I did get the magic smoke. does that means the board is no longer good? I haven't used it since then but I've been wanting to is just that the idea of a fire getting out of control doesn't sounds fun

    • @MightyRude

      unfkwthabls
      That sounds quite bad for the parallel charging board I wouldn't use it outside my line of sight anymore (it might also be a good idea to measure it thru to make shure there isnt an internal short or resistance)
      The charger will probably be fine (if it is a quality hobby charger)

    If i got 2 pack with different C rating, for an example a 4s 1300mah 75c and a 4s 1300mah 100c. Am I still able to parallel charge them or should I only parallel charge packs with the same C rating?

    I don't understand how the Charger can measure 6 times 3cells (for a 3S-pack)? It would need a 18pin-balance-port.....or how does that use?
