HEY NINE CLUB. Just wanna say I love you guys and this show. Im 32 years old just started skating again after 17 years and it's been the best thing I've done in the last 10 years. Listening to this channel brings me down memory lane and motivates me. Thanks Chris, Rog, Kelly, and j dubs
Awesome interview, Marc and his viewpoints on the current state of skateboarding are right on point. Kudos to C-rob for how he handled the whole Chocolate/Lakai topic. Good stuff!
Im with MJ 100% on his decision to roll to adidas. You're not gonna go through a terrible divorce, start a new relationship, and then keep pleasing your ex. You're gonna do whatever for the new relationship to make it work, even if it makes your ex angry.
You're ignoring the legal aspects of this analogy. A terrible divorce often does lead to you pleasing your ex. Lakai could lawyer up if they wanted but MC said they won't.
Compassion No, legal aspects are part of the divorce. It will alway be a gamble between what he/she gets no matter what pre-written agreements state. Anything can be broken and anything argued against. If your ex says leave your new partner 100% of people will say no, youre not obligated to preform anymore to appease them. Contractually MC said MJ was obligated to not announce his new sponsor, conversely MJ could argue his contract was up when his paycheck were altered without his consent. Only thing that MC could argue is if MJ had a new written argreement. Even that could be argued, MJ didnt announce it he provided clips to his new employer.
He's a grown man with bills to pay and more than that, he's a legend in skateboarding who's put in more work than most pros have, including having the longest video part of any pro in history...and the video part is for Lakai. He built a name for himself and something with MJs name on it will sell. Yet they kept cutting his pay. Can anyone blame him for leaving them? It's not like he's a rookie or even a has been pro. He deserves better, whether it's with a core company or not, period.
Because they can't, that's why. If MC was so mad like he says he is to the point that he was petty on how he removed MJ off Chocolate, they would have lawyer up against MJ. The only problem is that they can't, they would loose money that they can't afford to
I love Marc, at a time when I was getting older and getting out of skating, Pretty Sweet came out. I was never a girl/chocolate kind of guy, but MJ’s part, with the Bowie song, single handedly got me back into skating. Thank you MJ!
Im 34 years old i first saw marc johnson on the release of tilt man down and fell in love with his style lol the way he just looks at the camera while doing tricks or saying woahhhhhh when he almost messed up bro hes the GOAT BLESS YOUR SON
Thought I was the only one who notices....like who the fuck remembers what happened in April of 2000? I'd be lucky if I could remember one thing I did for sure in 2000. When he worked out 5% of $5 is 1/20th in the beginning, I was like...ok this dude's brain is different.
The Nine Club is so rad. If you would have told me I'd be able to see these conversations and hear these stories back in 1997 I would never have believed you. My favorite skaters like MJ, Muska and Reynolds are just as awesome people as I imagined. Really awesome to see how they have grown into like elder skatesmen (many lessons for the new cats coming up... the industry is Beast).
I totally resonate with MJ on the constant splurge of content, it's been slowly killing skating for me for years. I've just recently been thinking about this for the thousandth time and here he is speaking my mind
I've been waiting to see MJ on this show since it started. This is hands down my favorite episode. Not simply because it's Marc but because he is effing hilarious! I was laughing at his cartoonish way of explaining things throughout but when they cut to the clip randomly of him without a shirt on, I laughed so hard I came to tears. lolol Amazing show.
My favorite Nine Club episode thus far. Marc is a great storyteller, and speaks his mind about the current overload of video content. I can respect that. Stealing microwaves from the breakfast bars of hotels - classic!! So good.
People have been asking for MJ since the show began, finally he's here and It was better than expected. I was bummed when he left Crailtap, but I understand his reasons. Love you Marc! Love the Nine Club!
i have so much respect for Marc. he literally lived the struggle. I'm glad he cleared up the Lakai-Chocolate issue, so many people giving him shit for it when they didn't know then other side of the story. super stoked to see what's coming for in at Adidas. thanks Nine Club!
This is the episode I've been waiting for since the beginning of the Nine Club! All the comments just talking about who the next guest should be, without first fully respecting and appreciating this one prove Marc's point about the short attention span derived from rapid fire content overload.
When i was 14/15 i met Mj and Chris Story at Bowers park in santa clara ca. I was blown away at their skills and was inspired to push my limits. Mj is one of the coolest dude to kick it with. Nicest guy
The nine club is going against everything garfield taught us and making mondays awesome....keep up the amazing job guys appreciate everything Roger, Kelly and Crob are doing for us...Thanks for all the hard work!!!!
I grew up in Winston Salem and that guy he’s talking about in the beginning, Outtama, is my brother. My brother had some interesting stories about their time in California.
Everything MJ does reinforces him as my favorite skater. I am so glad his Fully Flared part stayed as is. I can watch it nonstop, and repost it every time I watch it.
Real cool to hear his story and seriously well done on letting him just tell it unimpeded. Too many podcasts invite a guest and spend 50-75% interrupting to tell personal anecdotes nobody else cares about.. great episode, MJ is one of my favourites to ever do it. I'm an even bigger fan now..
Hahahahaha so this is the birth of the switch flip manny loop my eye goes to EVERY show i totally just assumed C Rob did it himself lmao this show is sick been catching up on the last 3.5 years of skating just by watching this b4 for work
Damn I had no idea somebody like Marc would be living check to check... I was picturing the dude riding around in a new bmw with a nice house and shit. I figured with all he's done -- matix clothing, chocolate boards, signature shoe (which everybody had in the day), adidas money, back forty and everything else this guy was rolling. It's fucking crazy! There was nobody bigger in skateboarding than Marc during the fully flared days -- his image, his style, etc.
i would say if hes really broke its his own fault, and that it was his life decisions that made him that way... same with other professional athletes.. IMO hes not broke, like most skaters he doesnt want the perception to be that hes rich.. but i bet if you compared his income last year to that of a single mother really living pay check to pay check he would have a new understanding of "pay check to pay check".
RC Codes Yeah who knows. I suppose you technically could be living "check to check" and still be making 15k+ a month.. depending on your debts, bills and lifestyle.
Depends on how you spend Your Money and shit. if you earn 15K a month but have a house and car you pay 10k a month for and kid +++++, than you live still live paycheck to paycheck.
i think thats what he means when i says it (probobley should have wrote that in the last comment, my bad), unless he actually get payed minimum vage and live like a poor person (witch i doubt)
Roger , Chris , kells thank you I think by far the best episode so far !!!! For sure . Marc is so rad , and his story is great . And you guys did a great job !!! Thank you thank you !!!
Love that when I was in middle school marc johnson was my favorite skateboarder because of his pretty sweet part as a little uneducated kid. Now I’m 21(still young) watching his 7 steps to heaven part and listening to everything he’s done he’s my absolute favorite again. He has been relevant in skateboarding for more than 20 years...
In my top 5 skaters of all time, Met Marc in 98, when i was 14 at a skate tour south of Melbourne, he needed to borrow a lighter outside of the skate park while the demo was still going on. When he realized he had no product on him, he went to the tour van and rifled through Daewons bag to find a sticker pack. And cracking jokes the whole time. Legend
Great interview! I'm starting to skate and have become obsessed. 26 years old is a tough start age but my son started pushing on a board at 18 months old hes now almost 3 and loves anything and everything skateboarding. All of these interviews are beyond inspiring.
Mm Mmm I'm honestly more into the fun but as of the career all i want is for kids and adults to find the GOLD in skateboarding, its kinda funny that no skaters see a piece of wood once you get good at riding you start finding pieces of gold real fast! Long story short the goal is to spread the word i dont want money for it, sure would kickass but yeah.
I love this show. I’ve been rewatching/listening to episodes and I love Marc and his whole thought process in regards to everything. Skate history is great but I love hearing about the thoughts these skater everyone looks up too. Opinions, facts, what have you. He is well spoken and you can tell he cares about the future, past, and present of skateboarding. Get Marc back on for a round two like you all talked about. No one would be disappointed. Heck, even an Experience episode.
been a fan of marc johnson since i saw the hot chocolate tour, the first skate video i ever saw. Kenny anderson interview would just be immaculate, i love 9club
God this show is SO SICK! Marc is right the fellers episode WAS damn good. Man, never lost faith in Marc about the Adidas switch, glad he stayed quiet and it took a lot of strength good for you dude. Such a good episode, crazy because the show gave me a chance to know Chris better who I never really knew of outside his skate parts. Rad show guys, rad dudes rpg you too haha, hell yes!
DUDE!! so good! Cairo Foster has such a rad story, that I feel a lot of people don't know! I had a great opportunity to speak to him at an Adidas event. It would make3 such a great episode!
been a Joe rogan podcast fan forever. Chris Robert's is the only pro to follow me on fb and reply on a msg! this has shaped to been the future. alot of work mr Robert's. it's gonna play off players.
Real cool to hear the other side of the story. Hope Marc makes out good with supporting his family financially. I was a little irked by the statement of Nike and Adidas making better shoes. I find the opposite to be true. Adidas especially, they don't last at all and are stupid expensive.
this episode was heavy af. i gotta say tho, sole technology makes good shoes. i do agree big name corps got production quality but skate companies can catch up! to each their own. i skate them all. great episode guys.
I didn't know what to expect with this one knowing Marc Johnson, but this ended up being one of the best episodes I have watched. The whole bit at the end made me think he would be great entertainment on TV. When Marc was talking about his shoe with Emerica, I had to stop for a moment and look in my closet and sure enough I still have the box although the shoes are long gone. Even though the eS Koston 2 was my favorite to skate in, the Marc Johnson ones were great too.
My god, what an amazing interview! This is probably the 8th episode I have seen and by far the most greatest. Lots of history being told here. I must say, I 100% agree one the opinions of today's skating being broadcasted vs actual production video parts. Again, thank you all @ the 9 Club. P.S. - He mentioned G&S (was not aware of the connection to Maple),...lots of people don't know this, they were the first to have the hollow axle in the late 80's.
That gift was so thoughtful MJs the coolest
damn this is the ep where the ipad was given, hell yeah
I see the fnords
Might be a long shot, but what about getting Atiba Jefferson on the show? He probably has millions of stories to tell!
Cameron yes please! Atina would be amazing 🙏🏼
Acoidán Pérez Ikr Atina is so great
Cameron yes, Atina PLEASE!! FUKN ATINA
He's done so many professional shoots in general that'd be cool to hear about. Dude's busy every night tho
Yeees! Get Atiba on the show!
Nothing brings back good vibes and memories of the homies like getting back on the board.
Marc Johnson, one of the most soulful skaters of all time!
Awesome interview, Marc and his viewpoints on the current state of skateboarding are right on point.
Kudos to C-rob for how he handled the whole Chocolate/Lakai topic. Good stuff!

"Everyone of *us*?? Rog, you don't skate". CRob's subtle jabs at Rog and Kelly are hilarious.
@@blownonpurp seriously
Im 34 years old i first saw marc johnson on the release of tilt man down and fell in love with his style lol the way he just looks at the camera while doing tricks or saying woahhhhhh when he almost messed up bro hes the GOAT BLESS YOUR SON
I love how he’s so detailed with the old stories. Goes to show he’s got a great memory.

I keep coming back to this episode. I have watched it over 10 times now. Marc has a great interview personality.
nobody noticed that flawless hat switch..
I was gonna time stamp it @48:35 haha

I saw this comment 2 seconds before it happened 😂
MJ's part in Fully Flared was the best of all time. period.
koston Yeah right.. then this part

Michael Jackson's part?
The king of pop?
It was pretty good
Gotta say. for waiting over a year to hear this story come out it really paints a picture.

Roge- "Everyone of us"
Chris Roberts- "Everyone of us? Roge you don't skate" lol

That was the best episode yet. Marc changing wardrobes was too good haha
That had me tripping out when the first one happened. like was he not just rocking the camo america hat?
The ending where my dude is shirtless and a wig on is priceless.
^^ spoiler alert...I for sure did a double take w the hat switch
Dude that’s the hardest I’ve laughed in a while
I watched Marc's Year Right part for the first time last night and was blown away. Instantly one of my favorites.
I've been waiting to see MJ on this show since it started. This is hands down my favorite episode. Not simply because it's Marc but because he is effing hilarious! Marc is one of the greatest not just for his skating but for his humor, insight, perspective, story-telling, and art. Thank you for this
The whole drinking part was heavy especially the part about paranoia. Crazy good episode.

My Janoskis lastet Forever. My Vans Rowley Fell apart by Not wearing them. Same Problem with some Es shoes.
Well they do make better shoes so idk what you’re talking about.
