Totally agree with everything you said Devin. Real life experiences trump virtual ones, especially since human beings weren't evolved for the internet or for our digital tools. I had these videos bookmarked for a couple of years and now I'm getting to them, and I still don't really remember experiences throughout my life since I've just been glued to the screen. No friends, not a healthy relationship with family, no girls, no nothing. Thank you for this amazing video!
Honestly, I've never really thought about my time like that before. Now I realize how much time i waste that i could be doing improving myself but something is holding me back .
Wow man! Love this talk. Currently on a 4 month hiatus from video games. Trust me I actually do NOT miss it. I'm getting more done. Grinding to escape the 9-5 is more important and will be something I'll remember when I'm on my death bed. I would probably already be out of the rat race by now, if I hadnt been wasting HUGE amounts of my day coming home and playing video games. Awesome content as always!
i found it really interesting comparing memoreis of gaming to like a sandwhich vs memories irl. Memories irl are like a photobook that you can flick through and pluck from while gaming sort of mashes together
I've heard of this thing before and dabbled in time tracking tools, but you've finally convinced me to try this out for real. I've been working on my stream and building my RUclips channel for the last month now, and some of your advice has really helped me! I've grown from less than 20 followers to more than 100 in a month on Twitch, and since getting affiliate a couple weeks ago, I've already hit 12 paying subscribers. I'm beyond elated about it and hoping to get to 1000 followers by end of 2020, and maybe 50-100 subs by end of year? I think that's realistic if I work hard. For RUclips, I'm having a hard time getting out content faster, editing is so difficult for me, and I have to do so many takes because I mess up so often during recording. Streaming is so much easier in comparison for me. Any advice on that would be appreciated, but I remember one video you said improv, so I'm definitely going to try that. Thanks again for all you do!
Incredibly valuable insight. I struggled with this for 30 years. It's not easy to show yourself how to take control of your life... Acknowledging that you aren't in control at all times allows you to prove you can be in control. Like many tasks, we often assume we can't do it, even before we understand what the task is. Dont let yourself fail before you're satisfied with the effort you've put in.
A year later and this video pops up in my recommendations. Talk about an evergreen topic 💚 Just what I needed to hear since I've been thinking more and more about this lately
Great content man. Not sure if this is considered a podcast since I don't ever listen to them but this is excellent. You talk about and teach us great things and topics
Could you argue that, because gaming experiences all become mashed together and seem meaningless, this could potentially amplify the meaning and staying power of real life activities like your trip to Korea. Perhaps to somebody who doesn't game and fills their lives with experiences beyond the screen, these real life moments just don't have that same gravity as they do for someone who games often?
I feel like with how messed up you can get your dopamine reward system through video game addiction, I think one wouldn't even be able to appreciate a trip like that in that brain melted state.
I can relate so much to this. I know exactly what i should be doing everyday and i know for a fact that doing this things is what i enjoy doing but for some reason i end up either procrastinating or day dreaming. Shit sucks
I think this applies the most to Twitter and social media in general to me. It always takes away so much of my time and it usually happens without a conscious effort. like for video games on my care with it because making a conscious choice to do this. But social media kind of just creeps up on me until half the day is wasted away
yup, when you want to do games, you know your gonna sit down and play for like 2h or 3h or something. But when you go from one video to another video, from one clip to another clip, and scrolling through reddit for an hour, and your just there like where the fuck did the time go. And by the next day you dont even remember what you watched/ read/ saw during that period
I played in a HALO clan when CAL was a thing. What I remember most during that time were trips we made to local tournaments and experiences from going there never the actual match. Same during my time skating and traveling.
Hey Devin! I know the chance of you seeing this comment over a year after this videos initial release is little, but I've been going through a lot of your content as I start to pick up my RUclips and Twitch channels again and this video really resonated with me. It is important to be able to relax, but to be conscious of how much time we spend doing that or even to be conscious of how much time we are working ourselves. Nonetheless, this video had a profound effect on me and I hope you were and still are able to figure out a way to make it work for you and that you are truly happy and fulfilled!
The part about memories is pretty simple actually. Memories use time, context (including your own emotions) and location to sort themselves out. So it makes sense that video games like league of legend don't make vivid memories, because every game has the same context and location, and no relevant time frame (unless you're playing in a tournament or something), so they all come up together when trying to recall them. On the other hand, you have memories for things like books or even story driven games. I don't really have memories of myself playing these games or reading these books, but the scenes from them can be very vivid, because they have unique context, timeline and location in their own respective world. So I wouldn't base memories' importance in vividity itself, but if you want your memories to be more vivid then you need to experience unique and well defined things.
The more I listen to you the more depressed I become because I know that reading some IT books will help me become better specialist but nothing will help me earn more money as a developer at the moment and I am not brave/smart enough to start my own business.
Look up the required reading for some business courses at a university around you. Buy or acquire last year's books and read them or e-mail some of the faculty asking for advice on what to read and who else they might recommend to guide you in the right direction. There are more ways to go about this than you might think. You don't have to be that brave yet... Start by just being brave enough to ask for help. Good luck, buddy.
I try to view time from the lens of a cold hearted economist. There's either productive time, or wasted time. If I'm not doing something that's making me or going to make me money it's wasted time, unless I'm personally enjoying the activity. For example, I don't consider going to dinner with close friends/family or playing a video game that I really enjoy as wasted time even though it earns no money. I like 99% of people don't enjoy working, however, it earns money therefore it's not wasted time. Working towards mastering a new skill or earning a certification is also time not wasted. What I really try to avoid are times where I'm neither enjoying myself, nor making money. This would be stuff like going to a lame party, hanging out with people I don't like, or simply a hobby that I don't find as enjoyable as I initially expected.
Okay, if you're miserable, you should change those things. And if you're managing your time for a while, and you still continue to waste 4 hours doing absolutely nothing as you say (idk what that means exactly, watching youtube videos or what), then why are you still wasting 4 hours of your time? It is not helping you correct? But also, what's wrong with wasting 4 hours doing absolutely nothing? There's 168 hours in a week, what's wrong with every 42 hours u just take an hour to chill out and chill. Whether you admit it or not, that's HEALTHY.
I really enjoy your content! My boyfriend got me into your videos. I know this is from a year ago, but using the word Autistic in that way kind of gives me gross vibes, I hope that's understandable. I can't wait to catch up with your content though!
Get a day planner and put it on your desk. Every time you notice yourself doing something mindless or something other than your current goal, mark it in the planner. You don't have to write anything specific, just mark the time and estimate how long you've been distracted/procrastinating. Don't beat yourself up about it, just write it down and course correct(get back to the productive things you were supposed to be doing). The more you do this, the quicker you'll catch yourself slacking off and the easier it'll be to get yourself back on track. And don't give up. I tried this so many times and just forgot about it or ignored it after a few days. Forcing yourself to think about these things will motivate you to do better, and once you get a little bit of a handle on it, all the data you've logged will enforce that motivation by proving to yourself that you are capable of controlling it. Finally... Never bullshit yourself and make excuses when you slip up. Lie to anybody else, but never yourself. I hope that helps a bit, even if it's a few months late.
I hope your channel explodes, man. Your advice is awesome

Very thoughtful! Thank you.
Devin. This whole video is coming at me at a very critical time in my life and I appreciate that you did this, thank you 🤝

I don't see my best self, I have no idea what he would be.
How do I rid myself of super addictive and time-wasting habits, such as porn surfing?
