  • In celebration of International Women’s Day, we are delighted to share music from an emerging Edmonton composer, Amelia McLeod, conducted by ESO Resident Conductor, Cosette Justo Valdés. This work was commissioned by the Edmonton Symphony orchestra through our Young Composers Project that Ms. McLeod won in 2020. Amelia composed this piece in dedication to her grandmother. In reflection of the composition, McLeod writes: “My grandmother was a strong, passionate woman who advocated fiercely for all children and women while raising four kids. As a lifelong elementary teacher who volunteered at schools and the Intercultural Child & Family Centre, she fostered a love of all art forms in each and every one of her children and grandchildren. She is one of my greatest inspirations and was one of my greatest supporters, attending every single concert, recital, and ceremony.”
Amelia’s dedication written in the score of the music reads:
In the loving memory of Kathleen McLeod
A teacher, a lover of the arts, and most importantly my Grandma.
Thank you for encouraging me to follow my dreams, I miss you.
