An essay on who was the greatest film director was written by me in my School Certificate examination in 1948 when I was aged 14.. I am pleased to say I passed this examination, and the director who I wrote about was named John Ford. Thank you Mr. Ford for being the greatest!
I’m 23. I want to say in my humble opinion that title has not changed since you wrote that essay in 1948. Ford will always be 1 to me.
Ford was 79 years old here. The AFI awarded him just in time because he died 4 months and 29 days later.
Jimmy Stewart is only 65 here, yet looks 79. And that's with his toupee.
So this was the first Ceremony from the American Film Institute, in 1973.
I looked John Ford up on Wiki an realized that we on the same Day Birthday.
Any in 1973 I imagrated with my Mother from Germany to Canada, but sadly we only stayed there for nearly 6 Years. Those are my Memories from 1973, and never happier in my Life since then, but later on I had a big interest in MOvies and going to the Cinema. Today I have a huge Movie Collection on DVD. So my interest in Movies has not left in that Time.
I thought that John Wayne was going to be the next one to receive it. He was not given the award ever!!. Gosh, what an award this is !
He would have gotten one but he died before he could receive it. You have to be able to attend the ceremony and receive it in person
John Wayne was a nasty racist , and a coward
They should not wait so long to award someone. John Wayne should have been awarded in his lifetime. John Ford was a great director.
Agreed. And what about Cary Grant, Charlie Chaplin, Katharine Hepburn, Howard Hawks, Jean Arthur, Olivia de Havilland, and so many others?! They all died without this honor.
Mr Ford was born in my state of Maine in a town called Cape Elizabeth in 1894. He moved to Portland (ME) end lived there until 1914 when he moved to Hollywood. He has a statue here in Portland
Amazing that this segment of History still exists.....
Thank you for this goldmine!
John Ford, uno de los máximos exponentes de la cultura universal. Conmueve ver después de tantos años, estos homenajes a grandes hombres.
John ford 💪worked with the best, and was one of the best directors this is a beautiful tribute, to the great director❤ rip mr ford 🎉
So gracious of Maureen O'Hara to turn up, considering how badly he treated her (read her autobiography) behind the scenes.
O'Hara love Ford and he her.
Nixon was in the midst of the Watergate investigation, which ultimately led to his resignation in 1974. Ford stayed loyal to Nixon and viewed him as a great friend.
Surprised Ford even showed up.
A great film maker
Mega Super Stars right here
And they deserve to be called stars. They were bright!!
Thanks for sharing green eggs
No infantile whooping and hollering just applause.
Why STRETCH the standard screen format into this 'fake' widescreen. Makes everyone look flat and fat. Sheesh.
He was 79 and died 6 months later
Back when we honered our Presidents a differant time or period
and what a president was honored. shame on him and his league of thieves and like minded politicans. the following year he was out. that was the beginning of the end.
Don't be a doofus. Nixon was NOT a president. He was a crook.
This is pitiful. Ford deserves better.
Did Maureen ever record any songs? It's a shame she wasn't in musicals
I think she recorded a couple .You know she missed out on THE KING AND I AND MY FAIR LADY.SEE IF YOU CAN FIND HER INTERVIEW WITH LARRY KING ON.YOU TUBE
@@johnnewcomb534 thx! She did record some Irish songs and such. It's too bad her musical talent wasn't used in Hollywood, some things will never change.
She recorded an album of songs, Irish Favorites. There are several videos of her singing here on RUclips. Check out the Maureen And Duke "Forever In Our Hearts" Fan Group I created for her and John Wayne. It is really nice.
@@fasbc thank you! I'll check it out
Anymore please
31:27....DK just predicted Lemmon's win?!?!
Was this tribute to John Ford or the Danny Kaye Show? Kaye was never directed by Ford, why was he chosen as the host? Not a fan. Jimmy Stewart was the best part of the tribute. HE should’ve been the M.C.
yeah. made no sense
Kaye is just awful. His routine is also badly dated.
They probably did that to entertain and make people laugh, some actors are so serious to entertain. They do choose comedians today at the Golden Gloves or the Oscars. That way if they grill someone it will not affect the actors. Well before the Will Smith vs Chris Rock incident.
I do like Dany Kaye he was hilarious.
Better than some one using a q card. Danny Kaye was an entertainer.

Danny, you need to shut up. This is about John Ford, remember?
stop being mean and rude he was doing his job
Danny Kaye did drag on somewhat …
Danny Kaye loved….Danny Kaye.
Kaye was talking about everything except the man being honored.
what date was this done???????
1973
What year was it
I think it was 1973
Ya, I'm wondering the same thing............
Ok, I looked it up: this ceremony was in 1973, when Ford was 79 years old.
Danny Kaye would throw up if he was around to see what his profession has evolved into ..... a totalitarian loving crop of politically correct 0 pronowns
Pathetic shit comment made by an old fart longing for his youth. Fuck you and fuck your disrespect and politicizing. Piece of shit.
Danny Kaye was a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF--wouldn't that make him part of the "deep state" you loons like to crow about?
Most actors of the classic era wouldn't be caught dead espousing the Leftist tripe of today's Hollyweirdians.
Sadly right around this time good old Joe potato got into politics,,,just makes you wonder what happened to all the good men and woman
John Ford is great. But who thought the awful Danny Kaye was the right person to host this? His schtick has not aged well. He always makes it about himself.
A time when Hollywood was Pro American.
Hollywood then and now was pro American $
@@bman560 no it’s not
@@grantchristopher6459 did u not see the dollar sign?
I overlooked it myself...but then took a 2nd look
@@bman560 Now Hollywood is full of communist democRATS.
@@czechhockeyfan4403 John Ford was a Democrat
Please People Stop being hateful to Danny Kaye he just wanted to Make people laugh that's it
I make westerns
John Ford is American
John ford was a good director , but was a nasty person , period
Oh God. I just heard the last minute of his praying for God's blessings for Richard Nixon. Well, he did make some great movies. His politics leave much to be desired.
Some people are filled with hate. You must be a really sad person.
Yes Ford's early years as a mindless Leftist took something away from his achievement.
Robert Wagner…cringe
Terrible actor...........................at best.
Danny Kaye was already washed up by this time.
