Actually when you get used to racing vehicles, it's not the shifting that is the scary part at all, everyone can shift a manual up and down, even while turning, relatively easy. It's the rev-match downshifts that will bite you if you screw up, to little, the car wants to understeer, to much, the car wants to go tail-lights first into the nearest static object.
Gentleman Finn Not just a Le Mans driver, but a 4 times Le Mans class winner and then there is all stuff you didn't mention like winning 14 out 18 races in a season of the British F3 back when he was a youngster. .
This driver has skills! had me on the edge of my seat several times watching this. Seen a few times he came close to losing it but recovered quickly. I for one am definitely impressed!!!!
Watch at 5:35, during the big carousel- You see him enter the carousel, but the film is cut, because you dont see him take the set through the middle of it, and you dont see him pop over the crest at the exit. Instead, all you see is him enter the carousel, then it fades to right after the exit. Something was cut out, but the film clock doesnt reflect this, cuz thats only a YT clock, and not a chronometer of the lap. Anyway, I wonder what they wanted cut out?
The ZR-1 laps the Nurburgring faster than a Zonda F Clubsport. The displacement of an LS7 or LS9 is part of what make the Chevy motors better than any competitors. The LS motors are more compact, lighter, more powerful, have bigger torque bands, more power potential, more reliability, and ironically, the Chevy small block will turn out better fuel economy than a Porsche boxer, Ferrari V12, RB26, J2Z or other turbo Japanese motor. Any engineer, like myself, will say LESS moving parts are better.
wow!!!! one of the best in car videos i have seen. maybe because it's not a full on race car, the speed and the sound of the tires just made it more exciting. wish the rear view mirrow had been removed but this was absolutely great. car sounded sweet. WHAT A RIDE!!!!
goddamn I love how precise these f1 divers are with every input and how well they predict the behavior of a vehicle. This is particularly noticeable how little you can actually hear the tires scrubbing and squealing but every entry, apex, and exit is 99,99999 percent nailed
@marque27 The engine also maintains a more horizontal profile rather than vertical, keeping a low center of gravity for the whole car which helps the Vette handle like an exotic. On top of that, the simple construction makes for easy modifications to accomodate power adders like turbos, superchargers, or nitrous. Nice to meet someone else who can appreciate the simple genius of this engine. Cheers!
Very intersting to watch. BTG on this lap seems to be 7.10-ish, which is awesome in a road car like this. Also very intersting to see the lines. He seems to prefer tight entries, possibly because the way the car handles. Jan rocks!
The plan with this lap, was to beat the porsche cgt who's laptime was 7min and 43 sec. Jan did it in 7min and 42,6 sec. Im from DK and have seen a program with him explaining it. 👍
"European car makers can get 700+ hp out of smaller, naturally aspirated blocks..." Euro engines are smaller in displacement (per cylinder) because large displacement engines are heavily taxed over there. That's never been the case over here. And while making a small engines powerful is an achievement, making large V8's as powerful and efficient as the LS7 and LS9 is equally impressive, so much credit is due to GM's engineers. The LS series engines are, indeed, among the world's best.
With a closed track and Magnussen behind the wheel of a 2010 ZR1 with it's new traction/launch control, the ZR1 would do sub 7:20's. Magnussen did a 7:22 in a 2009 with the track open to the public last year. Since the 2010 ZR1 can cut nearly 4/10ths of a second off 1/4 mile times and cut 2.44s off the Willow Springs 2009 ZR1 lap time, you will see well under 7:20 lap times at the Ring with Jan driving. I heard Johnny O'Connell may give it a go in December also! Future 7:15 in the books
What the passenger says in the end is that he needs to go visit his kiropraktor because his neck hurts after the lap. And he says he understands why they use those deep bucket seats :)
You should recognize the achievement GM has made by making a v8 that weighs only 530 lbs make 638 hp. Also, I think you may be forgetting that a Pagani costs 6 times as much as the vette.
Im glad this guy was able to drive such a powerful car because i dont think he would be able to do this with most other cars do the the mass of his balls weighing down the car
On certain courses drifting can be faster. But drifting isn't about getting from point a to point b the fastest....it's a whole different animal. it's being able to be in control of a car that's sliding out of control. For speed, you are right...drifting is generally slower....but for sheer entertainment I fkn lovee drifting lol
When it comes to combinations there is no better combo the Jan Magnussen and a Corvette. Wish he would sneak back in for one more stint or two with IMSA
I can't believe they have track days with cars and bikes over there. Mag was tailgating one bike so close that he would've run him over had he fallen. I do track days with both, but I'd never do one on one of my bikes of there were cars on the track too.
DOHC? GM's been there, done that (e.g., LT5 and Northstar). It's not the magic bullet you seem to think. It also adds mass, weight, complexity, cost, and raises the engine's center of gravity, effectively negating power and efficiency gains. The R35's VR38DETT, for example, makes 545hp, weighs over 270kg, and gets 14 L/100km city and 10 L/100km highway. The pushrod NA LS7, by contrast, makes 500hp (capable of over 1000), weighs less than 180kg, and gets 16 L/100km city and 10 L/100km highway.
@marque27 "chevy knows that you dont need to pull 8500rpm to be fast." The current LS series engines are, however, capable of an 8500 redline. Pretty awesome for a V8 starting at 6 liters, yeah?
If you're talking about the base level coupe/convertible/Grand Sport, then that's about right. Mainly because they use the hydroformed steel frame rather than the aluminum spaceframe in the Z06 and ZR1, so they're somewhat heavier. 'Ceearrh 1' (lol) Good one! XD
Actually, I glad the slower traffic was on the track. Great to see not only how a professional driver attacks the track, but how he quickly and safely deals with the bit of traffic. Love the little laugh he gives the sportsbike as he blows by it.
I dont think that bloke on the bike had any idea that a cool guy like Jan was on his ass. II would be like shit.. can I get your autograph in like 7 minutes... LOL
@hitman89141 chevy knows that you dont need to pull 8500rpm to be fast. Besides the pushrod design of the vette engine kinda limits its high rpm range for street use. But the vette engine is known to make 800hp N/A with mods.
AMEN brother. i love all engines, from 1 cylinder up to the almighty bugatti's quad turbo w16. all of them are engineering masterpieces but for a huge engine to not blow up while spinning 8000rpms is quite an achievement. plus, you can maintain an LS engine at autozone :) and that sells me everytime.
the biker backed off when he saw the vette in his mirrors which was the sensible thing to do. look at his stance on the bike and how it changes when he realises the vette intends to pass him before the left hander, he eases off and lets him by. smart biker and a very experienced car driver. unfortunately not everyone on the ring is such. don't get me wrong the vette is fast but not that fast lol
"I think if Chevrolet put a little effort into it, they could get much more power quite easily." There comes a point past which more power isn't the answer, and the LS9 is as powerful as it needs to be. "Imagine this engine revving up to maybe 8500 rpm" The GM small block can already do that. The intake simply can't supply enough airflow to make additional power, so it's conceivable to engineer and build an intake that could just that. But, again, the engine makes as much power it needs to.
There is one word which describes this lap best (imo): Heroic. That said, there were a few places w/o traffic when he chose to short shift, any particular reason for that? Or just to make sure the passenger did not pass out?
To be fair, consider the price and the luxury. It is a BMW ///M car. It's not just a sports car but a luxury sports car with more amenities so it's also heavier. Anyone buying an M3 won't give a flip about the Mustang. Also, consider that ///M cars in general aren't as hardcore as they used to be. They are trying to be more mainstream and appeal to more buyers so you also have to soften the ride and tone down the handling. You could say the last hardcore ///M was the E46 M3.
@IbonedDerekDsister "Is that 7.22 with traffic?" Unfortunately, I must eat my words. I've since found that Magnussen was indeed stateside when this run supposedly took place. However, his 7.24 run WAS amid traffic. So, a 7.22 lap is still quite probable for the ZR1.
Luck had nothing to do with that, he's a former F1 driver and current driver for the Corvette racing team in the American Le Mans series, no doubt he was always in complete control. In fact, it seems he took it a bit easy in a few of the faster corners. Still, a fantastic lap and I definitely wish I were the passenger for that ride! I wonder what they were saying to each other in the end? Anyone speak Danish? Love the sound of that supercharged V8...
7:55 Magnussen - “hahaha” Passenger - holy shit, that was full on! “Nuhj”(just a noise/outburst) Passenger - daaamn, I need to see a chiropractor! Passenger - crazy, my neck hurts! Passenger - good thing the seats are so deep/hugging Magnussen - yea
watch his battle against the very competitive flying lizard porsche and patron ferrari at MoSport from this year (2012) and also laguna seca from 2010. Jan is amazing.
You're absolutely right. He's much better than Jim Mero. Jan Magnussen can definitely get this car below 7:20, provided good weather and an empty track.
@marque27 "Besides the pushrod design of the vette engine kinda limits its high rpm range for street use." It's also funny how everybody laughs about the pushrods until they find out how much lighter and more compact it is compared to engines with half the displacement. This 'archaic' technology not only disposes of additional systems and subsystems like variable timing (just look at the Northstar!), it also keeps cost down, and enables such a big V8 to rev so fast and high.
@jjs4you2 7:22 time was an internet rumor, spread by blogs (autoblog, fastestlaps etc.). Magnussen was in the US at the reported time the lap was done.. look it up.
@hitman89141 "My comment was aimed at the overall performance of both vehicles, especially on the road. If you ask me, lap times for road vehicles only have limited value, because that´s not what they are made for." OK, I'm with you on that. The Pagani is, by definition, an exotic which goes beyond performance to encompass exclusivity and refinement. I'm a Vette guy, and I'll say that, while she might run door-to-door on the track, she's no exotic. Now I see your point. No argument there.
A Corvette magazine interviewed Tadge and Jim Mero. They both stated that Jan did do laps at the Ring but Mero was significantly faster. Jim stated it wasn't so much as he was a better driver than Jan, but that he had several thousand laps on the Nordschlief compared to Jan's few hundred. Jan's schedule is too full for him to spend a significant amount of time at the Ring.
Why the HELL don't they have Big Mag make the record runs?!? They'd make all of their competitors scream for mercy with the lap times he'd make! Absolutely love how he points and laughs at the guy on the sport bike at 4:55!
@bronxboyXXX That laptime never actually happened. Magnussen came forward and outright denied it when it started circulating around, claiming he was in the USA at the time it was "performed".
@sw1000xg Well Mag did not drive 200 times around the Nurb with the Zr1 like Mero did. One thing that is certain is that it was an open track with this recorded time. And he would probably receive at least 7:24 with a closed; using the old Zr1. However using the New Zr1 for the best lap record is onyl fair since, the 7:24 set time wasn't even a true SpecV, it was a modded one with 70 more HP. And none of the very low GTR times were official.
Man, I just love how Jan keeps the car on the utter edge of traction on every corner. He always represents Corvette well.
Never knew I could hold my breath for 8 mins 18 secs.
I'd be scared if I was on a motorcycle and I heard that corvette screaming by
😂😂😂
He's fucking fearless. I'd be too nervous to reach over to change gears! And he's dodging traffic too.
TehPaws3D Rev matching is second nature once you've learned it. Hell, I rev match when I drive one of my commercial box trucks. It's habit.
you attacked with some intensity... outstanding use of a ZR1...
Damn, this guy can drive!!
Thats because "this guy" is Jan Magnussen, Le Mans driver, winner of the 2013 GT Drivers Championship and father of Formula 1 driver Kevin Magnussen
Gentleman Finn Not just a Le Mans driver, but a 4 times Le Mans class winner and then there is all stuff you didn't mention like winning 14 out 18 races in a season of the British F3 back when he was a youngster. .

This is the video that got me into motorsport & performance driving.
Oh man that sound, gearbox & power we will never have again

Where is the F1 in a corvette?
@@mortenfrosthansen84 Maybe he meant to say FI as in forced induction

Holy crap, this is one fast Corvette, great driving.
