Perfect video!! Thanks for the video. It is very helpful. In Turkey, the locking system is 75$ for the lowest quality brand. The original one is about 200-300$. But the motor is 5$ only.

Thanks. What i did was to replace the original with another part just to keep the luck working then ordered mabuchi motors. Never thought opening to change the brushes.

The motor has a thermistor built-in (rectangle, opposite side to the coil in the new bottom part that you replaced) used as a protection for the lock. Happened to me that this part failed partially (limiting the current to the motor windings when ambient temperature rise), and the car would not lock-unlock when the car was in the sun, in the cold morning was working fine. Nice videos Louis.

Good work! Interesting that the same door (right rear) seems to be the one that usually fails, regardless of left or right hand drive model.

When you fix the armature inside of the brush holder do not see the range of the capture 😔

Great video. I really mechanics like you. If the owner would have gone to the Range Rover dealership they probably would have charged $1000 (or more!) for this simple repair. If I would needed electric motor parts i would have disassembled one of my Tamiya tank kits and robbed the Mabuchi motor out of it - which was probably the brand of electric motor you repaired. Cheers, mate.

Great fix Luis as again :) You have just confirmed my obsession with saving old parts for further use. Is it possible that some sort of thermal protection kicks in after a certain number of lock/unlock attempts?

    • @LMAutoRepairs

      Most likely...
Seen in before, the thermal protection on some cars.

Nice fix Luis . I see in the comments that people do approve of your way of fixing these particular things . i am not against it and I still do the occasional alternator brushes or diodes but that´s where it ends . The more parts I buy over the years the cheaper they get . You know what I mean . As much as I would like to fix some things sometimes it is just not logical . I do however disassemble a lot of things but that is just out of pure interest .

I guess if you own a business, your approach to repairs needs to be slightly different...
As you probably know, this channel is mostly intended to DIY repairs etc... where this kind of repair makes much more sense, monetarily and as a learning process...

These are toy car motors made by Mabuchi. Some enterprising sellers on Amazon are offering 4 motors for $20 but to me the shaft looks too short and you would need to press off/on the gear. Still could be a cheap way to get new brushes, much cheaper than a new lock mech from Rover or BMW...
