Are the star maps on a stone disk intentional or simply co-incidental? Let us know what you think!

I suspect star maps are never coincidental.

I can see no reason to doubt that somebody in ancient times might make an image of the night sky. Different constellations appear at different times of year; and would be important for agricultural timing. The Nasca lines in Peru seem to be just such a calendar. If you painted the stone black except for the marks, the indentations would look like stars. So, when this pattern of stars appears in the sky, it is time to plant, and this constellation means that it is harvest time, etc.

    • @AndyGabrielPowell
      @AndyGabrielPowell 3 месяца назад

If they are constellations, there appears to be no correlation between them (i.e. alignment.) However, perhaps the unidentified mark is simply the Moon?

I feel we modern humans can't possibly know the intention of the carver. It could be a star chart or someone testing out a new chisel.

Your show keeps getting better. I love how the high-tech world is updating us about where the original settlements were. I teach 11-year-olds about ancient history. Every day I wonder how much has changed since my sources were written. I just updated that Otzi, the Iceman, was dark-skinned.I love how you showed the South American LIDAR results; the news carried the headlines without the pictures. It's so much better with an archaeologist telling the stories.
    Thanks

It’s easy to get confused, darker of skin doesn’t mean dark skin. “Anatolian” heritage I’d definitely not call dark skin. He most likely looked like an early proto italian, which he is.

Mark was one of my favorites on the show when he appeared. You could see the passion and love for his field every single time. Not to mention he had a very unique voice in my opinion. He will be missed dearly but his legacy will live on for many many years. ...I was not expecting to hear that he had passed...still shocked.
I hope to someday be able to see Britian. John Gater still has it after all these years and looks to not be slowing down! Rock on!
It does resemble something man made but to be a star map...I can definitely see it 😊. Humans do things sometimes and we have no idea the reason or what it could be, but I'd like to believe this could be a star map for sure. And South America has some amazing archeology! So much of which is still hidden I think. Looking forward to yet another amazing year of Time Team! Cheers from the USA, west Tennessee to be precise.

His feature so makes me want to get back to Britain (from the USA) and spend all my time going to historic sites. There would be enough glorious wonders for many lifetimes. i may be strange but i am always fascinated by discoveries of things that should no longer exist simply because of their material. what i mean is that first story about the small treasure horde found on the Shetland island, the treasure is amazing and beautiful, but i would be EVERY bit as excited to see the intact wooden box it was found in. is there somewhere i might see pictures of the treasure as well as the box somewhere? was the box itself even saved? how about the slab it was under?
there is this beautiful photo i have always been fascinated by of the unbroken seal to the Tomb of Tutankhamun, it is just a rope knot tied around the doors with an unbroken i believe mud seal similar to a wax seal. this is just a rope knot and pressed mud seal with writing in it, but it is over three thousand and two hundred years old and still sitting there unbroken at the time. that is AMAZING and beautiful to me, and i feel the same way thinking about the intact wooden box these artifacts were found in. often those ropes or this bit of wood boards would easily have long rotted away and vanished from history, and us getting to see them today in out lifetime is a wonderful treasure.

I am devastated to learn of the passing of Mark Corney. He was always a wonderful addition to the Time Team regulars. I lived in the UK first back in the late 70s to mid 80s and again from 1995 to 2012. My first 10 or so years got me interested in archeology as I spent all of my weekends and holidays in museums and traveling to archaeological sites across most of the UK. My next 17 years living in the UK was every week watching Time Team and taking my holidays traveling to archaeological site I had missed my first go around and a few that were featured on Time Team. As for the silver cone shaped item, wasn't salt and sugar back in the day compressed into cones for easy transport? So couldn't a rich merchant, aristocrat or noble who could afford such expensive goods have also had such beautiful items crafted to keep them safe as well as for their display on a banquet table?

I wonder if you could raise the concern about damage to unprotected sites of antiquity? E.G. Back in 2012 I took my late (American archaeologist) wife to see Fernworthy stone circle on Dartmoor. A few years ago I revisited it to find someone had used the surrounding burial mounds as hills for trial biking. This had resulted in significant damage to the mounds. - which also begs the question, have these mounds been excavated, and what can be done to deal with these sacrilegious acts?

    - seems to me that Chapel would have to be Pictish in origin, for a number of reasons, not the least of which is their desire to honor the power of the natural world.
    - meant to hold the ashes of a certain kind of tree.
    - seems like certain constellations have held some importance to peoples throughout history, recorded and perhaps not recorded history. We tend to forget what the night sky would have looked like before light pollution as well as what conclusions or ponderings our ancestors may have had or felt... we certainly forget, constantly, that they were as smart as us and were very unencumbered by modern distractions.

I do have a Mark Corney story. He interviewed me when I proposed an adult education course at Bristol University exploring Bristol during the blitz. He looked very disappointed. 'World War II?' he said ruefully, 'Nothing interesting has happened since 1150!'
    RIP Mark.

Can your graphic artist make bodies of water look less like land mass? It takes a few seconds for our eyes to figure which is which.

Another great report. Thank you! Could you please include something next time on the iron age forge recently discovered at the Whittenham Clumps where Time Team did a previous dig?

I think depending on the size they were meant to go on top of a candle to collect soot for writing with. The flame can come through the bottom piece and the small hole allows for some air to let the wick burn but just enough so it smoulders and creates more soot.

In considering whether or not that disk is a star map did they process the relative star positions for several thousand years of proper motion? Your illustrations showed the current appearance of the constellations but not what they would have looked like in the iron age.
