  • Worth pointing out that this isn’t strictly TDC- the cams natural resting position is slightly off tdc, but its as near as makes no difference.

Hi bro isnt those cam caps are other way around ? C. Tensioner side should be cap #2 and cap #5 should be at gear side ?

How often do you need to change the cam chains ? I got my water pump and timing belt down 100km ago. Mechanic never commented on chains . They aren’t rattling so I guess there are ok ?

With regular servicing they shouldn’t ever need doing

If my intake cam is out but my exhast cam has never moved, can i safely turn the motor to tdc on the exhaust cam then install the intake cam notch up and count the 16? I was doing a tensioner replacement job and rubbed off my white out marks.

If the intake cam is still completely removed, then yes you can but remove the spark plugs to allow easy movement.

Nice video Bryn, why does it snap over as you turn it without the sparks plugs in? Thats very confusing for me as I can't see what installing the plugs would touch or do to make that not snap over like that... Or is it when oil pressure is t there it snaps over and oil pressure makes it sit up fully so it doesn't do that when running .. cheers

It does it with or without plugs, but without plugs you aren’t fighting compression. Tdc (or as near as makes no difference) is a natural resting point for the cams. And yes, with oil pressure it takes up the slack, so it doesnt jump like it does in the video

Hey there, been pouring over your videos, great stuff! Recently picked up a 2003 TT 1.8t 6 speed manual. I've been driving it the past few days with no trouble, but yesterday as I was pulling into my driveway, shifting became very stiff, and over the course of a couple minutes, it became impossible to shift into any gear. It will shift fine when the engine is off, but when its running I cannot get it into gear. The clutch seems fine, it doesn't stay down, and it doesn't seem to have lost pressure. I don't think I broke a shift fork. There is a slight ticking when it's in neutral, which goes away when you apply pressure to the shifter towards any of the gears, but I don't have enough seat time to know if that was there before or not. I'm going to try to bleed the slave and master tomorrow to check that, although the fluid level looked ok, but aside from that have you ever come across this issue? Again, it was shifting fine, driving smoothly, then over the course of a few minutes, shifting became progressively harder, to eventually impossible. Hoping it's a simple fix but after spending the day looking on the internet, it seems the old tt's aren't the most reliable machines lol. Anyway, greetings from Canada, and you've earned another sub! Cheers!

If you pump the clutch pedal a few times before shifting does it help?
