I’m three days older than Jesus and have been practicing magic for more than 40 years. 🤣 That being said, I’m so glad your videos actually teach people that there is no right or wrong in the craft. I also love that in your videos, you let young witches know everyone’s magical journey is different. I, too, think that books are good as references and based on the writers experiences, not some ancient law handed down by some mysterious witches council. 😂 Another great video! Thank you for sharing.🥰🌈🤍

"Three days older than jesus," I'm using this now. Thank you for the great belly laugh, I get it.
I have been on this path for less than a year and this video is something I wished I'd seen a while ago. I had to do all the things "right" and couldn't read enough, fast enough. I've had imposter syndrome at different points in my journey when I compare myself to other witches. Imho, it is something society has put on us, "gotta keep up with the Jones" of the world. Breaking from that idea was HUGE growth for me. I'm looking forward to the day I can say I've been a witch for 40 years. 😍

I am a solitary beginner witch and I love what you say in the video. I don't follow any strict rules regarding using certain herbs for certain things....etc...I just follow my instincts and it actual works well for me. I am clumsy, messy, irrational and often fickle in following certain steps. So i love how I can make my own rituals as I go and still connect with the Universe's energy.

I remember when I was first starting out, I went to the local magic supply shop, and the woman running the place was very kind and helpful with her advice. She told me a lot of the things I was already doing in daily life sounded like magical workings on their own. She also looked me right in the eye and said “You don’t need any of this stuff we sell here to be a capable and powerful witch. Everything you already need to be successful is already inside you. All this stuff is just decoration to a practice that is all your own.” It really gave me the confidence to pursue magic, and to this day, I love the personalization of the craft. It truly is something you can craft for yourself, no matter whether you use a lot of materials or nothing at all. 😊

They are called blinders. And yes they are to keep the horses from getting distracted and focused on following the handler's orders.
I love your videos, they are so down to earth and relatable. I too could barely get my parents to buy stuff for me. Wiccan rules and rituals made it very hard for me to practice. And honestly it never sat well with me. Sadly that was all I could find at a younger age.
I struggle with the thoughts of deity (thanks to my Christian upbringing). Part of me wants to believe and part of me thinks I'm a fool. I think I'd be more comfortable foregoing any deities and just going with what can be proven, science! So yeah, I lean towards your way of witchcraft. It's nice seeing someone else who practices in such a way and ALSO talks about eliminating the feminine/masculine energy stuff. It's just energy. No need to give it a gender.
I love this so much. Side note, I want to go to that retreat so badly. I literally just moved so I'm broke af. And I know you'll be busy with your babies (hope you're doing well btw), but I hope this isn't the only opportunity to do this. I would love nothing more than to hangout with you and other witches. Also, I wouldn't mind helping out with the food (I'm a chef and I'm very good with dietary restrictions).

I was only 16 when I started my craft. My dad was a witch, and had some tools that he gave to me when I told him I wanted to be a witch. Don’t ever feel bad that you don’t have any tools or crystals or candles. A pen and paper, your own chants, a simple meditation on your bed can work wonders. I’ve been practicing for 7 years and only now am I learning how to use the tools my dad inherited to me. You may not even use any tools until you create a sort of witchy schedule throughout the days. Adopt practices, add new little two minute rituals to your day and make it flexible. There’s no reason to stress about a sabbat or a certain time for a ritual. Just do what feels relaxing, fills you with joy and just be yourself. Witchcraft will come easier to those who just let it be part of their everyday life.

I love this video! I literally wish I could blast it from the witchcraft community radio station lol. I am just now at 36 years old learning to “do me”. I’m getting out of the habit of looking up what other people do, and embracing what I think I should do, what works for me, what I like. And I have to tell you, it’s been working brilliantly for me. You said this beautifully, and I’m going to save this video so that I can come back to it when I feel like I’m losing myself. And you said it, intention is everything…. There’s no need to have all these expensive special tools and things like that, it can be very simple💜

So many of these are things that I wish I had known as well. When I was learning, the witches around me had so many boxes and strict lines between things. Thankfully, I pushed against a lot of them because I was taught to question literally everything, but it took a long time to break a lot of those lessons in my head. You do you. I don't get into numerology which is hysterical, because I live with a witch who loves that stuff. One of the things I wished someone had told me or I learned as a kid was to trust my instincts. I have found as an adult they are right more than they are wrong. I've tried to get myself away from Wicca-based things (ex: researching the older holidays vs the modern ones (Jol vs Yule)).
This was a great video and I think the big takeaway is as you said: There is no right or wrong way. Honestly? As a teen learning witchcraft... I probably did a lot of things that others would say were way wrong or not meant for a beginner. It taught me a lot and I really think sometimes dropping yourself into the deep end can be good so long as you know how to get yourself out of it.

I'm really learning to let go of being so dogmatic and making sure I don't get stuck in only doing things one way. For example I used to get caught up getting all the "proper" ingredients for a spell but I'm starting to shift that thinking. I realized that the reason I practice is to connect with and honour the natural world and it's not really honouring the natural world to contribute to harmful practices like buying ingredients that are becoming threatened due to over harvesting. This was first brought to my attention with the sage and palo santo debate which I'm sure most of us are now aware of. I've done more research and learned that many incense plants are in the same boat like frankincense, myrrh and copal. I'm now shifting to doing my best to grown and sustainably harvest my own local resins and plants and making my own incense cones which is very satisfying and I'm finding a beautiful way to get out in the natures and explore for ingredients. I also feel like ingredients you grown and or gather yourself just feel more magical somehow, possibly it's just the smug satisfaction factor I don't know but either way it feels lovely!

Male witch here for almost 40 years. Thank you for the discussion about deities. I’ve never understood, nor have I gotten into any deity worship. I think this is due to people leaving mainstream religions and need to have a Deity to identify with. Astrology, same thing. I love the cosmos, and am completely overwhelmed with “what’s out there.” And less so with how planetary movement can affect human activities. We can all live together and learn from each other. Your channel is so supportive of many approaches which makes it a valuable resource. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. Also, love the background music that accompanies your talks!😅

The message of the video was concise and direct without being crass. You identify what your path was , has become, but it does sound like you have finished growing (exploring). I come from a very religious back ground and though like you say there is no one truth or one way of doing something. There is no right or wrong in the craft of doing "witchy" things. I do however find that the structure that Wicca provides can be a great starting off point to carve your own path, and provides a structure that lets you see your own path. Especially in the beginning, witchcraft seems so open and free that it allows for it to become anything; from positive to negative. There are some sects or methods of practicing with deity that seem to have been ingrained in me to reject as heresy. I was considered other by my own family of religious people, not because I practice, but because I am gay. So the notion of a structured path that accepted me entirely really opened me up to Wicca. Granted in the beginning there were tons of heavy handed female and group activities, sacred rite speak between cis gendered people, but through people like yourself I learned that I can carve my own path. I am a solitary male practitioner who Identifies as Pagan with a Wiccan leaning perspective.
Within the present we shape our own futures, simultaneously the past directs the present. lol in other words: we practice the way that is true to our own nature, yet keeping in mind that what we practice and believe is directly tied to our individual choices and actions in the past. I see all religions as suffocating with dogma and righteousness (even some representative Wicca: color, herbs, crystals, and deity), but they are only a starting off point to give you an idea of how things have been interpreted (it is up to the individual to blindly accept or carve out their own understanding of said color, herbs, crystals, and deity.) They are not wrong but share traits which tell me how witches of old use to think and feel. I do feel that even within Wicca there is suffocating dogma that it has a right and wrong way of doing things from representative magick, astronomical magick, divination, and iconography. Wrong as in not encouraged, and specifically discouraged. "If you harm none do as you will"( or that you must have an athame), but what is protection magick if not warning and deterring of negativity and those that would practice it on you. Likewise, what is a love working if not a manipulation of situation or another person. That is where you carve your own path: I personally protect me an mine from harm, viciously, and simultaneously do not practice anything that would encourage love, like, lust, loss of someone else's free will. I tend to focus on the shine before I see the diamond, then through its many facets do I accept the differences and similarities of all witchy things and religious dogma; as coming from the same diamond (source). Wow this got big... lets see if it lets me comment. lol hope someone finds this interesting. THANK YOU FOR POSTING YOUR VIDEO.

I so loved this vid! I laughed out loud. 😳
What I've always been aware of is the prejudice against "witches". I don't use that word to label myself, because of the idea we're evil. As if evil doesn't exist anywhere else. Of course, anybody can choose to be evil. So, this feeling of having to hide it. To try to shun it. My experience has been, that this attempt is futile. But, that is my experience. We all should follow our hearts. As long as you harm none.

Absolutely LOVED this video!!! As a teenaged witchling, I too had to make due with limited accessibility to EVERYTHING, including books!! I slowly developed my magick by listening to my intuition. To hear you say all of the above was balm to my soul, as the information explosion, via the internet and soooo many new books (which I love) saturated my consciousness, I began to question my practice. For my practice is simple enchantment of daily acts and focusing my intentions through very basic magical actions. I think that what has happened is that the millions of witches, many that developed their craft alone or in smaller groups, are communicating their millions of different developed practices. As no two snowflakes are the same, no two witches practice the same - and amen to that!!!!! Thank you!!

I LOVE this video! Thank you for saying what has been needing to be said. When I started practicing, all I had to learn from were 'those' books and, while those books are a good source for some things, there were other things that never quite felt right to me. Such as, I don't cast circles - which seems to shock a lot of Pagans.😂 I've always believed that being a witch means being close to and revering/tending nature and the earth we live on and formal ritual circles just don't feel natural to me. But that's just me being me of course. It took me a few years to realize that it's ok to be myself in witchcraft and I think that's the key thing: If you're going to be yourself (in society) by being a witch, then (within witchcraft) you should be yourself as well, by practicing witchcraft in the way that is most natural for You - not by practicing what someone else says is the 'right/wrong way'. Thank you Becca, for creating a place where like-minded people can gather and share their knowledge and experiences. Peace and blessings to all.

Hi Bex, thank you for putting this together! As always, great work! I've been on your website lately for your retreat and even though I'm not participating this year, I wanted to mention that I really enjoy reading about your background in psychology! I bet, it makes all of your videos (not just this one) a lot more nuanced and fun. 🙂
My craft is very different from yours. But what we have in common is not resonating much with all the Wiccan information. I remember in 2001, I got my first witchcraft book. It was solely based on Wicca without telling the difference between Wicca and witchcraft, that it just didn't resonate with me. I kept the book all the way to university, but finally decluttered it in 2011 or 2012. Eventually, I found more resources online in June 2020, and I've been a witch ever since. First I got my tarot deck, which I was hiding from my partner. I'm so happy to have access to the craft now. (And my husband is all okay with me practicing.) I actually acquired some tools to explore and to practice. And I enjoy my tools so much. Not sure if I stick around 'forever', but witchcraft to me feels like coming home after being lost in the journey for a while. But so do other things as well. Again, thanks for your video. I always love when I can watch thought provoking high quality witchcraft content. Do you have a vlog type style video planned for your witchy retreat? 🙂

Watching your videos has been so good for me as it's really helped me to feel a lot more relaxed about my own practice. I did find a book or two very helpful when I started out, which gave me a good grounding in some background knowledge and how to get into ritual straight away, but over the years my path has veered from that kind of Wiccan-based witchcraft to more of an earthy pagan. I love earth mysteries along with its more prosaic cousin of prehistory and archaeology, plus my beliefs have developed into animism, spirit of place and earth spirits. I also love nature, gardening & cooking, lol, and have recently started taking an interest in making herb concoctions. I'm so incredibly grateful I stumbled across your channel. I've devoured a number of your videos at this point and can honestly say that I've never run across anyone who managed to articulate so many of my beliefs in ways I couldn't even manage to do myself. I had already been leaning strongly toward some form of Pagan practice but kept stumbling over vague feelings of cultural appropriation and/or deity worship that just made everything I looked at not quite a good fit for me. Your approach both appeases the academic in me and pleases the part that still needs some type of spiritual practice, even in the absence of a belief in the organized religion I was raised with.
In addition to that, though, the videos themselves are simply wonderful! Your voice is soothing, the cinematography is gorgeous (can I just say how insanely jealous I am of the stunning vistas in your part of the world, lol?!), and I often find myself rewatching or even just listening to videos I've previously viewed when I'm stressed because of work or otherwise having a bad day. It's almost guaranteed to relax me and put me in a better frame of mind, which is invaluable IMO. Thank you for all the wonderful content you've provided for us!

Looking back on my life it seems that I've always been a witch. I've always put intention into everything I did and hit a wall after having 2 beautiful crotch goblins. Only now, coming across you're videos have I realised it's always been within me. My mum was also telling me that her Nanna, cousin and herself are also into witchcraft (how I never knew this, I don't know) puts me at ease that I'm not a weirdo and it is indeed in my blood. I've always been interested but never followed through into researching witchcraft.
I have now set up my safe haven in my bedroom ( I don't care who's watching 🤣) and just make a point of having some me time to self soothe/heal. I make my witches brew before bed and drink it with intent to heal my mind, body and soul. This helps me to manifest and attempt to fix my mental state which is my main concern at the moment.
I will gradually learn along the way and write my own path. Your videos are confirmation that this is the best way 🙌

I got interested in witchcraft in the 90's due to the movie the craft... I've always been drawn to anything magical/mystical/mythical/nature back then i thought the only way to practice was to have all the tools and have fellow witches to do rituals with. Because of this misconception once the craze of the craft passed I moved on to other interests because I had no one to help me. I still feel a pull to nature and magic, just until now didn't think I could practice. I get very very overwhelmed as well with info >.< but it's good to know there is no exact right way to practice. I feel drawn to sigils or runes when I see them or hear others speak about them they just click. I feel I may start there 🤣 sorry about the book! I love your videos thus far and will be watching more for sure.

I believe intent forms the basis of all spells. Most I make up on the fly. One of the best ones I did at a cousin's house who was having issues with bad spirits went like this. "Yo bad spirits get out, ya good ones can stay." It worked and all the bad ones left. The little girl spirit who wanted to stay did. The girl had died in a fire on the property many years ago and just wanted to stay where she was happy and had other kids to play with. She knew she was free to pass on at any time, but was happy where she was at.

Love this and agree with every word. I’ve been in the craft nearly 50 years and when I started out, there was much less information easily available - there was no internet so it was largely Wicca or The Devil Rides Out 🤣 However, I need to work on conjuring Crotch Goblins!

Thank you for the information. Also 10:57 you asked about the things that horses wear. If I’m not mistaken those are called guiders and they make it so the horse just looks at the path

I've been practicing since the day I remember I'm 44 now I'm the one. I started by reading folklore and history of witches. Which made question the structure of modern religion. I made alot of items, I do herbs 🌿, healing, meditation and challenging but all around natural stuff that I drawn to I keep some modern books so I can teach others who ask but tell them guide lines my practice is of old folklore that has no name and no books it takes research to learn and blank pages to write down and meditation to be shown.
I love your channel I follow alot of what you do aswell. I was excited to see that we similar

A lot of these tips are more helpful than people realize, especially understanding that you don't have to follow others' belief systems. As long as the magic you practice isn't poisoning you mentally or physically, you can practice just about however you please. I think people need to keep sight of that as they experiment and join online communities. There are so many witches who try to coerce less-steadfast practitioners with peer pressure and emotional manipulation.

Well said!! And people that are new to the community and craft are especially vulnerable to this, as many of them might not have that mindset (yet)

What I wish I knew before practicing witchcraft was that I didn't need to have any kind of religious belief and that I could work with my own. I also wish I knew that even small things can be part of witchcraft (like burning a candle, going for a walk in nature) as long as you put some intention into it =)

For the curious nerd types that enjoy taking notes to look stuff up later:
13:00 As a philosopher, I had to learn A LOT about how to backtrack research to find the origins of a lot of things, not just words, or linguistics, but also beliefs, etc. I do agree that MANY tend to assert a number of things as tho it were absolutely true, but without any citations, and I've also observed MANY MANY things morph over time since the 20th Century until now. There's MANY things that people believe as fact and believe to be ancient wisdom, when in fact they're not that old, and have morphed over time.
*She's mentioning here "levels of magic" I noticed this as well, but this tend to seem to have origins in something called "Meritocracy" to some degree, like this idea of leveling up, which has a number of issues. (Genghis Kahn started using his version of Meritocracy because when he conquered China, everyone abused the system of relationships & bribery to get a job or position, known as "guanxi" and couldn't actually do the job they had. So, then they formatted systems of leveling up for soldiers as well. YES IT HAS ORIGINS IN MURDER & SUBJUGATION.)
This MIGHT also have some origins in "Mystery Religions" which has a process of revealing some stuff as you hit newer levels, which is a type of the oldest Mysticisms created by humanity. I know its often very vogue to cite Kabalah, but Kabalists and ancient Hewbrew tribes were notorious for taking culture stuff from other cultures, then re-packaging them as Jewish. I ran into this A LOT in my research. Many people would assert that Kabalah was actually Egyptian, but I also found holes in that. A lot of it ACTUALLY comes from Hertmetics, altho it sounds GREEK, it's actually from Pre-Babylonians (not Arabs) in ancient Iraq. Also, mathematics were ORIGINALLY seen as mysticism as well.
Many of these things got incorporated into things like Platonism, Neo-Platonism, and Alchemy.
As for the "ancient stuff, that stops THERE. But its a common practice OVER & OVER to claim that their new ideas or views are ancient, when they're not.
    * "Inner Child" is from John Bradshaw (20th Century) whom was a psychiatrist whom wanted to teach Christians to STOP PRACTICING CHILD ABUSE which they staunchly insisted upon, and explained his medical findings as re-interpreted for a theist audience. This was how it entered into the "spiritual" communities, and THEN CHANGED when the Hippie/Flower Children movements took off in the 70s.
Many people think "inner child" means "morale", like you need to go be playful or have fun, and that this is some ancient idea. Actually, "inner child" is a copyrighted concept by Bradshaw in his books & lectures. It's ACTUALLY refers to an aspect of the Psyche that has stunted growth (hence stuck as a child and not fully matured into adulthood) cause by trauma, abuse, and psychological damage, which causes anxiety, depression, self esteem issues, bad relationships, self harm, and many other problems. You can actually STILL find some of his lectures on RUclips, but they are vintage & dated. So, think of it in terms of an anthropologist, since he's discussing his views of things based on the culture of that time period, which is predominantly Christian monotheist, thus why his terminology reflects this.
    * "Thoughts Create Realty", "mind over matter" (Early-Mid 20th Century) by Neville Goddard
This was an exceptionally interesting find! I linked a LOT of origins of common ideas to this guy. He also speaks the Trans-Atlantic dialect of English (like old vintage B&W movies). He was frequently cited by Alan Watts & Dr. Dyre as the main influence for their own teachings. His Wikipedia page is VERY SPARCE, and they tend to tell this story of him studying Kabalah, but when I listend to his lecture recordings it very obviously sounds like Hermitiscism as a main influence.
What I found interesting about his lectures was that he would frequently re-state his ideas, because he'd be telling it 1 way, as it actually was, which actually sounded more secular, then he would re-state it using metaphors (typical of Mystery Religions like Hermetics), then he would do it again in Biblical language. IN this manner, he's be reaching different people with different biases, whom would ONLY hear & accept what they were primed to hear, rather than just being open minded & unbiased.
The metaphor style of telling stories was perfected by the ancient Greeks, but it was re-worked many times, like "Nationalism" such as Joan of Arch, but then re-worked again in Revolutionary time periods, and other movements like Communism, and many other mass movements which rejected spirits or deities, and instead used ideas, like "Liberty", "Communism", or some ideology of some sort.
He had the beginning versions of teaching mind over matter in a contemporary culture. He often discussed things like "inner dialogs", and "pictures in your mind", and how negative ones would mess up your life and stop you from success, and self-help.

Wow! I don’t know where to begin, it’s like you read my mind 🤯 I literally started following you yesterday and was hoping you would
post a video like this for I am beginning my journey as a Witch. I’m learning to accept that it is okay to be myself and that I can still practice while following Christ. The kitchen, cottage/house and green witchery really resonate with me the most. You do an excellent job explaining everything ☺️ Blessed be 🥰🙏🏻🤍✨

Thank you for this video! The spirits and deities have always been off putting to me and kept me away for a long time. The statues are pretty, but for me it was too much like a woowoo version of Christian youth camp with chasing spirits in the woods and pleasing a deity for favor.

It is definitely a new World…When I started out, the internet didn’t exist… in the early 70’s even bookstores didn’t carry books out in the open.. it was all in the occult section. 🙄 Learning for me was based on instinct and connection with my surroundings…and personal energy…with all the paraphernalia and literature now a days I’m not sure I would have attempted to see the forest through the trees. I would have been too overwhelmed and my instincts would probably have been camouflaged with all the available information.. I sometimes wonder how anyone finds their core of energy anymore. Too much is not always good. I’m glad I found my way before all of this.

You are so right!! It just becomes overwhelming with so much information - especially the way this information is often presented. It is lovely to have more resources and an online community now but I think it also makes things more difficult for beginners in a way. Everything needs embellishments and items and stuff, and very few people focus on the actual core and essence 💚
