    Know what? I've never actually played Doom. Back in the day, you needed 4 mb of memory to play it. RAM was $100/mb back then. That's MB, not GB, kids. $400 bought a crappy but drivable car in those days. It really was a lot of cash. I did eventually get Wolfenstein, which came out at the same time. This is one of the first things that I will do when I get my rg35xx. So happy that you can buy something like this almost on impulse now. Thanks for doing these videos. I'm sure that they are going to be very helpful when my new toy arrives.

      Wolfenstein 3D came out before DOOM, as it was the game ID made first

      Ran it less than that, but had to minimize screen for it to run well 😂

    Thank you for this clear guide... I didn't know you could play dos games this easily. For Blood, if I am not mistaken, the engine is the "build" engine, same as for Duke Nukem 3d, Redneck Rampage,...

    3:04 I've noticed this as well. I play most of my NES, SNES and early-game consoles on my N3DS and it just looks... *great.* I was playing the first Dragon Quest game on SNES with a fan-patch for English and I couldn't help but think how amazing the game looked on a smaller handheld screen.
    Most retro games just work better with a small screen mainly because the resolution, I think, fits it best. You don't need a modern widescreen handheld for this purpose, it would only make the games look worse by comparison. I guess because you can't get pixel-perfect resolution when even one pixel has to stretch to accommodate the higher-res screen. Though they can still look good with some tinkering, of course.
    But yeah... I completely agree. It's kind of awesome how that happened, because portable gaming for these games we never in a million years thought we could take on the go without some kind of handheld port for a system designed to be weaker that ultimately winds up being okay at the time but ages *so* poorly by comparison. Like you can probably enjoy Super Mario on GB/GBC, but you get a much nicer field of view in the NES/SNES versions of Mario, so why would you want the old handheld versions? Nowadays we can get the best versions, like Super Mario All-Stars, on a powerful portable handheld console with no drawbacks.
    10-year-old me would have been *ecstatic.*

    Can you please make a video tutorial showing how to get the cover art for games on and looking nice? I can’t find anything anywhere apart from a couple of web pages but they aren’t great explaining the resolution changing and alignment changes needed to make everything look clean. Hope you do!

    I also first thought PS1 games aged better into the handheld format, but actually a part is really CRT magic. Games with that low resolution just look awesome on a CRT compared to a pixel to pixel LCD/OLED. I think they still look amazing on a 4K TV when a proper CRT shader is applied.

      It's all up to the resolution.
      Nintendo 3DS has 240p lcds and retrogames looks crisp.
      While our SBC handhelds uses 480p lcds most of the time.
      Closest one i found is the Powkiddy A30 in the shape of GBA.
      But it's pretty anemic and the 2.8inch screen doesnt help much.
      New 3DS XL's bottom screen is pure 240p.
      Best emulation experience ive ever tried

      You'd also need to make your own sh file to make it appear on the list (it's pretty easy to figure out just by opening a sh file and looking at it)

    What about DOS games that have 2 different programs, one for setup (sound typically), and one to start the game ?
    If the game is saved into a zip archive, that means it's read only, so the first program will not be able to save settings into a file, so one cannot set the sound settings from GarlicOS ?

    • @henrynox4244
      @henrynox4244  Год назад

      I have skipped the setup or install file when running DOS games so far. As for the read only zip files, I know it seems to save the setup options to the games save file.

    • @Wolfie1262
      @Wolfie1262 Год назад

      You don’t use zip files.
      Doom runs on Garlic OS natively. It uses PRBoom as its engine

    I decided to buy this console after watching this video because Blood, Quake and Diablo are games that I played a lot as a teenager and it brings me a lot of nostalgia to play them on a machine of this type. Other games too, of course, especially Atari 2600, but these three in particular. And all three are available. What I miss is a Starcraft port...

    Cave story is atrocious with jump and shoot reversed, just awful. there is a config setting, but no matter what i change it to it stays the same.

    Has anyone tried this with newer games like Super Smash Land? I'm waiting on an RG35XX fix (the screen it shipped with doesn't display anything) and I'm really looking forward to playing some homebrew retro-style titles that are only available as EXEs... But dang it would be nice to play them on a mobile device rather than a desktop.

      That's a good call. I plan on making a video for getting MSX games working since I went through some hoops to get Metal Gear playable. It would make sense to group some other similar systems into that video like I did here. Might be a while before I get to them though.
