I think its more respectful to the car, to give it a new life, rather then letting it rot in a garage. If you can't use it then its not a car, it loses it's soul.
You lose the excellent Ferrari engine sound, plus the driving experience of shifting gears. If you want to modernize a classic Ferrari, build in a modern Ferrari V8 engine. Still not the same, but a lot better than turning it into a vacuum cleaner.
I understand wanting some money back from selling the parts and helping maintaining other cars but I would have preferred to make a glass coffee table with the engine block underneath. A bit of industrial design as art to remember our past :-)

It isn't feasible to build mass market EVs (or gas) that look as cool as an old ferrari... Crash safety standards mean that high performance very expensive materials are required.
There's a reason exotic cars aren't cheap. New Tesla Roadster is being built as an EV from ground up and is expected to be >$200k. Your best hope for a svelte affordable sports EV may be if Mazda makes an electric successor to the Miata, which would still be at least >$50k.
If i was in this gentlemens position I would do the same in a heartbeat, it's an excellent way to keep these classic cars on the road and exciting. Robert reading out the stats, accompanied by his own sound effects are why i love fully charged.
@@robbiestevens6913 New series? I was not aware of that. Does it have Tom Selleck? Or have they done what they did with that Knight Rider 2000 nonsense?
Yes, in 10 years he takes it in and has a solid state battery put in with 200 kw and loses some more weight and it accelerates even faster for another 20 years.
I think with all things considered... the owner is completely right! This is a beautiful car but not an ultra-rare collectible. When I heard he had done 8 miles in a year, it made me so sad... I understand why but I just think, seeing cars like this on the road makes me so so excited. It's tiring seeing Astra, c class, 3 series, Corsa, Yaris... but imagine seeing more Ferraris, old rally cars, Masseratis... OH IT'S EXCITING! Thank you fully charged for keeping up the good word of our Lord and saviour EV :D
I could not agree with you more. Absolutely, imagine seeing all those classics coming back onto the street.... and kicking your butt at the traffic lights.
Yes absolutely i love the look of old Apha Romeos my sister had a lovely one but even though she was married to a very good mechanic it was too unreliable. Be great to see these become better cars.
This is a really good episode, one's preconceptions change when you hear the owner out. The owner also seems to have been influenced by Fully Charged so without this show it is not easy to say if this project would have come about. I could have done with a double length show with the owner telling us a bit more about himself. What will be interesting is if this particular car with its on screen presence in this episode and having been converted by one of the pioneers has more value in a decade to come than the petrol burning variants.
This would be a great way to boost the kit car scene. Instead of trying to wang an old Ford 4-pot into a fibreglass lancia delta knockoff, make it electric and get it driving just right.
@@scarlettsgarage1 Looking to do exactly that. Bought a 1981 Midas with exactly that intention. As soon as you are paying to convert a car, whatever idea you had about value go out the window, just pick a car you love and go for it. @@18T220 you realise it’s completely reversible don’t you? At any moment the owner could say right ready to sell it and pop the original lump back in and it would be back to normal. This “Leave classics alone” bs really makes no sense when almost every EV classic conversion I’ve seen has been 100% reversible. All the ev conversation is doing is keeping these cars on the road so they’re not either standing still in a garage or rotting away on a drive way. Open your mind and think about the bigger picture
@@diffypoo I'm sure he'll undo the £75k spent making it electric, sounds like he wanted to power his house using the battery so unlikely. Just disappointing seeing a lovely V8 get removed.

What a beautiful car, looks like a really professional conversion. Available in any colour as long as it's Red. One of these cars that always puts a smile on your face, either just looking at it and even more when driving it.
@@MartiniPinball That's right... it's better than a Ferrari! It's a super Ferrari! The first actual supercar of Ferrari. Maybe the company will take notice and start making electric cars in their factory? Probably not
And then they put a milkfloat engine in it! I used a carburettor version of this as a daily driver. Driven frequently, they don't break down! Unfortunately most Ferraris, especially the older ones see the road about 2 months a year if they're lucky as they're part of a bigger collection.
@@dcarbs2979 There's always more to the story - interesting! So if I ever own an antique Ferrari I must drive it every day to keep it running well. Sounds alright to me!
@@justin_time Same with any old car. They were built to be *driven*! The owner said himself one year he only did the return trip to the MOT station (8 miles). Reliability problems are inevitable with such little use. When I buy my cars over 20 years old, I get concerned when they've done LESS than 100k. Rather have a stellar mileage well-maintained car than low mileage one that's been sat seizing up for decades.
Why can't all electric cars do that out of the box? Most of them have batteries that make a Tesla Power Wall look like a toy. I never understood why that would be, after all I can add panels and a micro-inverter without drama.
When engines die and the car is still otherwise serviceable, this is a potentially great option! As stated here, there will be people after engines, so extracting those parts to be a doner for another car isn't a bad thing. You actually end up with MORE of these classics still working and on the road rather than rotting in a barn.
People should realize more that older cars aren't that comfy to drive, so replacing things like suspension or engine isn't "killing" those cars. Every time i look at someone restoring old car and they do some modifications, everybody in comments says they destroyed that car and it should have original parts. There are people that prefer having actually usable car, not showpiece, after all, they bought it and they can do what they want with it. Conversion like this are great for people that still want to use original parts since they will have a lot more options now.
I totally agree! Some times using original fit parts is potentially dangerous. You wouldn't use asbestos brake pads now and you wouldn't say it was sacrilege to use a modern alternative instead. Also things like The oil used. Tech has gotten better and while I appreciate the importance of maintaining at least one example of pivotal or iconic technology for posterity, keeping them all stock is unnecessary. It's analogous to where tradition may hold back progress in other situations. We shouldn't do things how they've been done before, purely for that reason.
Although a big part of me says it's sacrelig! But this is the future and when you take an 80s ferrari that isn't strictly a popular classic and do this to it its fantastic I love this idea!
Personally, I'm highly appreciate of having this option to keep these classics going an relevant, the fact that is better is a pleasant benefit, I suspect there will be a very short list of cars that you just wouldn't do this too, a Veyron for instance. I'd love to be there the moment he parks this in a charging bay at a supermarket and someone goes to have a go at him because they think they are being ICEd.
@Vladimir Putin one reason to like classic cars is the extra layer of engagement they provide over even modern petrol cars. This is lost with an electric vehicle, even if it’s better in refinement and speed. Another thing, The usage case for classics is often long drives to car shows. If you have to stop twice on the way to recharge, then that’s objectively worse in my view.
@@dizzy2020 you could program the engine controller to stall and fail if you don't apply the choke properly. I don't know if the austin 7 had a manual spark advance like the model T, but it probably would not be that much work to figure out how to completely emulate the pain of trying to run an old ICE.
@Vladimir Putin but it takes 5-mins to fill up, which is acceptable when you are convoying with a load of mates doing the same. If you are charging your car for an hour or more you can no longer travel with your friends, and that’s less time at the show. You can’t smell the exhaust from inside the car can you? Brake and tyre particulates are produced by electric cars as well. Generally people like the noise, otherwise Ferrari wouldn’t angonise and spend millions developing their exhaust.
This was the car i wanted as a kid. After seeing this I want this version ! If I miss the sound of the V8 I’ll play a recording on the radio. Can we do a Renault Traffic with this performance? Much more useful 😂
I would argue that without the Ferrari engine, it is now an electric Pininfarina, as they designed the body. I'd rather have this than one with an unreliable old IC engine. :D
@@poplaurentiu4148 I'm not sure. Enzo cared about winning. He sold sports cars to have money for racing, all that mattered for him was putting his name at the top in the next race.
Someone has to invent a muffler with a speaker built in it that makes the loud vrroom! sound that would match the rpm of the motor and the change of gears simulating the gear shifts. And the speaker should run on a hydrogen fuel cell so it can blow steam out the tailpipe.
I don't know if they are still available, but I saw years ago a system that allowed you to play different engine sounds over externally mounted speakers, and it was controlled by the rpm of the vehicle. You could make your Ford Escort sound like a Lamborghini, or a Ferrari, or whatever.
I’m sceptical of the vehicle weight. Even with a full tank of fuel, it could never be 1500kg?! Internet reckons 1265kg kerb weight, even if that’s dry, then 100kg extra for fluids would seems realistic and that some way short of 1500kg...
Make sure you're searching the right model. It's a 308GTSi, not GTB, GTS etc. Weight also varies depending on options e.g. A/C, but 1500kg is about right. 👍
@@ElectricClassicCars yeah, just having a look at the moment, Ferrari are often spoken about as being a little misleading with weight and power figures, if 1500kg wet is right that’s a right porker. Bit I know some of the US cars in particular were very heavy. @Ratarossa certainly stripped a lot of weight out of his!
@@ZJC743 did he say 150miles to a charge? If you did 150 miles to a tankful the V8 would be consuming fuel at 8.5mpg. I’m sure the Ferrari is thirsty, but not that thirsty at a gentle cruise (which is the comparison made).
I used to have a Ferrari 328 and the engine was the soul of the car. These cars do so few miles I don't see the point in converting them to electric power. I bought my car at 22000 miles when it was 13 years old and sold it six years later at 30000 miles. Driving it was a very physical experience. (no power steering made parking a real work out and the clutch was pretty heavy too) but it handled well and sounded fantastic. I don't understand why they gave the conversion so much power. I find where I live I'm lucky to get much over 60 mph these days. I like EVs but in this case I don't think I would have done this. I had a Zoe for three years but have bought an SLK because I found the Zoe a bit too dull (next car will be an EV if they ever make an electric sports car that is sensibly priced). This is still a rich person's endeavour
And there are those who don’t really know how to Drive a proper sports car and do this kind of Things!!! I don’t care about extra HP. You’ve taken all The fun from really driving and feeling the work of art that is the gear lever on a Ferrari!! Humanity deserves what’s coming to Them After this kind Of things happen!! Absolutely RIDICULOUS !! 🤬
would love to own it :) we need a competent kitcar co. to clone the GTS and integrate a Tesla 3 long range 2wd system...at an affordable price - save another 300kg in construction and add another 100kg of batteries -dial down the performance to, say 0-90 in 9 secs, VNE 100mph and 300 mile range - update suspension + brakes... and u have the perfect sportscar..someone do it...and sell it for £25k, 90% built:)
Just re-watched this episode and it raised several questions which could apply to any ICE engined car being converted to EV. 1. How much of the original transmission (clutch/gearbox/differential etc) remains, in EV trim? I pose the question because this car appears to have the original gated gear lever. 2. IF it still has original drivetrain remains, can you drive it through the gears ? 3. From a pollution perspective, can the V5 be updated so that it is officially known as a 100% electric vehicle, therefore no tailpipe pollutants?
So he's restomodded the car with an electric motor? Good for him. I hope it brings him lots of pleasure. Minor nitpick but I don't think it has more range now than it did before. I think those have a 15-16 gallon tank. Even at only 15mpg it would easily crack 200 miles to a tank. I suspect that 250 is more likely. I hope it brings him lots of pleasure and keeps getting used.
Did _The Stag_ pub sponsor this video? Subliminal marketing is going out of control. How many times did that sign show up in the first six minutes?! :P
I don't know that I'll ever be in a position to have my Ferrari electrified, especially as I probably won't be in a position to buy a Ferrari but I can see a huge market over the next 10-50 years for classic cars being electrified. The worst thing about them is the mechanicals regardless of whether you like ICE or not that's simply a fact.
Sense of occasion and involvement of original spec totally lost with an EV conversion. Even a 200bhp Ferrari V8 is more exciting to me than a 500bhp electric motor. At least you get the noise, and the engagement. Faster does not equal better. Plus, it’s £60k! That’s probably a few lifetimes of maintenance and fuel costs on a 308. Most classic car owners will be maintaining their cars themselves for £100’s a year.
@@adogmcdizzle My point is not specific to the 308. I mentioned classic cars (meaning all of them). In the coming decades you won't be able to buy an ICE car new and people will want a mini cooper or an Alfa spider or maybe even a Ford Granada with an EV drivetrain. There will be exceptions, I'm not suggesting every classic car will be converted to EV.
@Mr Brightside With respect, your analogy about a Casio watch and a Rolex is not a good one. Doing that would make a crap watch. Converting a classic car with a crap engine to an EV would make a good classic car.
@@dizzy2020 A lot of these conversions will be because of regulations on ICE that is upcoming, not because of the love of EV. I'm thinking about the bigger picture, not the niches.
it's not preserving a car tho is it? And it's kind of against what electric cars are. You have a daily driver that is electric and then there is the fun weekend ICE car. Also, what worries me is that mug punters will buy these cars that do understand how unsafe they are, with no crumple zones or airbags and what not. (this was written before I saw all the vid btw.. )
Not many 'mug punters' will buy a Ferrari and then spend another 60k converting it to an EV without really knowing what they're letting themselves in for.
@@strawhall With all due respect, I think you are wrong. What sold cars recently was safety, now it is them being electric. ok.. and I don't want to pot fullycharged here.. but I can't remember them mentioning the crash ratings how many airbags are on the cars on their modern car reviews.. sooo yeh..
Slightly random, but had the pleasure of talking to Robert at a trade show in the mid 2000s. My editor at a magazine spotted him and demanded I go and talk to him in case he had something interesting to say. Didn't have a clue what to ask him about, so started a conversation about cars instead! Even back then he seemed incredibly passionate about tech, cars and idea of electric vehicles - is fantastic to see that passion alive and well with the Fully Charged Show 15 years on.
Much of the charm of a classic sports car is the engine- the sound, the rumbles, the kinks - but replacing it with an electric drive train suddenly makes it a practical driver.
@@gerardrbain1972 It's a sports car. The old acceleration is still fine these days. Now if you're talking about a classic VW beetle for instance, then the acceleration is a bit unpractical.
I guess the charm and practicallity depends on if you want the classic car experience/hobby or just an interesting car to drive. I suspect it will depend on the car and how good they were originally and what role you want it to play. but, if its this or a second hand porche to drive to work or as a daily I know I'd pick this.
As an italian, i KNOW this is the way to go with classic cars...still...for national reasons an electric Ferrari is something i need to process for a long time before I fully agree :)
I can sure understand the love for old classics ..but I sure CAN'T understand why you would ever want to keep the old technology engine and not want to upgrade to electric ...absolutely love seeing these conversions.
Love your channel and I’m a big fan of electric cars but taking a classic 308 Ferrari and converting it to electric is just plain WRONG! It’s a bit like taking a Rolex and replacing the movement with a battery powered digital unit from Casio. It will improve the accuracy but removing its beating mechanical heart is like removing its soul and its the same taking the petrol engine out of this Boxer.
I find it a disgrace to remove the beating heart and frankly an engineering masterpiece like the Ferrari V8 engine from a classic car like this. If it’s not your daily driver, appreciate the engineering and keep it classic. Use electric on your daily commute, and keep your hands of classic cars like this. There is so much value in the sound and smell of an old car.
This just ruin it for me, the old engine with it's sound is an integral part of it's charm.. And no one really buys a classic car for it's practicality
Sure, but taste changes over time, for many people. And there are oldtimer museums. I like Ferraris very very much, but I’ve see them mostly only on soundless photographs ☺️ Converted newtimer are getting the chance also to be more practical again. It‘s a pity to not see them on the streets!
Robert is a good guy and I enjoy this channel, but 10:40 is all the proof you'll ever need that he just doesn't "get" cars like this on an emotional level.
Most of this comments section don't get cars at that level. They value wirelessly charging their phone and bluetooth audio over having a mechanical connection with their car. I get that automotive needs to electrify, but destroying heritage because you were "bored" with it isn't the answer. If the owner of this Ferrari was so bored with it he should've sold it to someone who would actually use it and enjoy it.
This is not just a EV conversation, it's an upgrade! I have only considered about campervan EV to be home batteries, but it totally makes sense for sports cars as well.
Why not just create a replica shell then? The shell could be lighter if made with modern materials. You wouldn't go into a museum and hollow out marble statues and replace the insider with a lighter material to make it easier to move. These cars are historic pieces of art, they were never designed to be daily drivers.
@@Baseless_ if it were a statue that was subject to be moved around very often, I don't see why would be bad to make it easier to move, as long as the visible shell is the same, and the material strength is still preserved. The new core could even improve the strength as reinforcement if using smart choices of composites. I really don't understand the obsession of keeping old stuff as is, just because it is old. I understand that some things have sentimental value, but this car had an expensive service and maintenance history. I think replacing drivetrain and suspension is a smart upgrade, and it is not like those parts were thrown away, they were put on the maket for used spare parts, to enthusiasts wanting to keep their car with OEM parts.
I am in love with the music!! Where can I find it? I believe electric is a brilliant solution for travel however, as a true petrol head I will SERIOUSLY miss the visceral experience of a combustion engine yet, the advantages of electric and hydrogen as far as I have researched are undeniable!! Great work Robert (and team) as always you are a hilariously, animated and a completely bonkers presenter but, boy do you make this channel alive. God bless and keep up the good work!!🙏🏿🙌🏿👍🏾😁

There's a reason exotic cars aren't cheap. New Tesla Roadster is being built as an EV from ground up and is expected to be >$200k. Your best hope for a svelte affordable sports EV may be if Mazda makes an electric successor to the Miata, which would still be at least >$50k.

Always fancied a Delorean myself, just imagine an electric one, it would be sensational wouldn't it?
And you could charge the batteries up with 1885 technology!
The electric DeLorean was done quite some time ago. Just do a search on RUclips and you'll find it.
There was electric DeLorean at Fully Charged live 2019 :)
The Company in Texas that now has the original DeLorean parts inventory was offering an EV build version..dunno how many they'd have left..
A DeLorean is the perfect application for an EV conversion. Mainly because the original engine was quite bad.
That's an excellent point.
Although a big part of me says it's sacrelig! But this is the future and when you take an 80s ferrari that isn't strictly a popular classic and do this to it its fantastic I love this idea!
If it means it's driven vs staying in the garage it's well worth it, especially if the performance is improved.
Personally, I'm highly appreciate of having this option to keep these classics going an relevant, the fact that is better is a pleasant benefit,
I suspect there will be a very short list of cars that you just wouldn't do this too, a Veyron for instance.
I'd love to be there the moment he parks this in a charging bay at a supermarket and someone goes to have a go at him because they think they are being ICEd.
@@dizzy2020 Couldn’t agree more
@Vladimir Putin no, I just like classic cars; I don’t understand why they suddenly need to be electrified to ‘save them’.

The execution of this project looks amazing! From the outside you can’t even tell it’s been converted to electric, it just looks like a Ferrari.
Someone has to invent a muffler with a speaker built in it that makes the loud vrroom! sound that would match the rpm of the motor and the change of gears simulating the gear shifts. And the speaker should run on a hydrogen fuel cell so it can blow steam out the tailpipe.
No need to simulate gears, this car has a manual gearbox
The first Fully charged :Live event had a prize giveaway of such a noisemaker kit..they're available...
@@thedigitalmelon7326 But you don't use the gears like an ICE.
@@dragonskunkstudio7582 but you can still use gears to multiply the torque at lower speeds while having higher top speeds.
I don't know if they are still available, but I saw years ago a system that allowed you to play different engine sounds over externally mounted speakers, and it was controlled by the rpm of the vehicle. You could make your Ford Escort sound like a Lamborghini, or a Ferrari, or whatever.
Considering what unreliable junk most Ferraris were during this era were, this option isn’t a bad one.

Wow! What an era to be alive in! ✨
Wonderfully cinematic intro! You are a gentleman of means ;-)
Also the range, the ferrari 308 has a 80 litre tank, there's no way if you drive it gentle it will get less than the EV doing the same driving.
@@ZJC743 yes, and even then it’s 5mins to refuel vs 45mins+ to recharge.
Really you know Mr Bruce Walter?
Just re-watched this episode and it raised several questions which could apply to any ICE engined car being converted to EV.
1. How much of the original transmission (clutch/gearbox/differential etc) remains, in EV trim? I pose the question because this car appears to have the original gated gear lever.
2. IF it still has original drivetrain remains, can you drive it through the gears ?
3. From a pollution perspective, can the V5 be updated so that it is officially known as a 100% electric vehicle, therefore no tailpipe pollutants?
The fact is that most old classic cars like this were never much good. They can only benefit from a smooth, modern drivetrain!
Then build in a modern Ferrari V8 engine. Then you have great performance and great sound.
It is a joy to watch your videos and your spontaneous reactions and vocal sound effects.

@Mr Brightside It's a good question. I meant the engine and transmission.

There is nothing about the acceleration is practical.
@@gerardrbain1972 It's a sports car. The old acceleration is still fine these days. Now if you're talking about a classic VW beetle for instance, then the acceleration is a bit unpractical.

Well Done on the Conversion... Many more to come... Pistons are gone... but the cars live on...

Sure, but taste changes over time, for many people. And there are oldtimer museums. I like Ferraris very very much, but I’ve see them mostly only on soundless photographs ☺️ Converted newtimer are getting the chance also to be more practical again. It‘s a pity to not see them on the streets!

Most of this comments section don't get cars at that level. They value wirelessly charging their phone and bluetooth audio over having a mechanical connection with their car.
@@Baseless_ I totally agree.
