  • Pixar's Elemental resonated with me, not because it was my story, but because it was a story that helped me understand some of the people I know and love. I saw the world through their eyes and it brought me so much joy. Elemental is a wonderfully creative, personal film, especially for it's writer and director, Peter Sohn, who is a first generation American, a child of immigrants.

    It was probably more personal than I originally intended it to be, but I'm glad I got to share my friend's story. I'd love it if you'd share your story here or if you'd share this video with anyone you know, especially anyone that is first generation.

    Excellent work, amigo. Really appreciated the personal touch added by interviewing someone who shares a similar-ish background to the director. I have yet to see Elemental (darn you Alamo!), but when I do I’ll have a newfound appreciation for what it’s trying to say.

    I just saw the movie today, and I loved ❤ it! Being someone who appreciates and values diversity and understanding others different from you, I completely agree with you, and elements were an interesting way to explore all of that. “Take breath, make connection.”😁

      Both Disney and Pixar animated films have had a good stretch of representing different types of people culturally in the past few years. I know for some it has been polarizing because they seem to not relate, but I don't have that problem and I've loved it. I get to know more about my friends and that is super cool to me!

    I really loved this movie. It hit me so hard and I thought the story, visuals, and characterisation was just beautiful.

    that's why u have more than one kid! If u have 3 or 4 odds are one of them will be willing to takeover the family business.

      It's like an evolution from the days when farmers would have 12 kids just to be the workers on the farm.

      @@ModernMouse True but only one of them actually would inherit the farm and u have that many kids the more odds that one of them will keep doing it.

      Also the likelihood at that time is that you'd have 12 kids but half of them would die, but that seems like a grim story we don't need to get into.

      @@ModernMouse shhh don't reveal the dark side of big families lol. I actually come from one of 7 (not all biological I was a foster child and my foster family became my permeant family as well as my two younger sisters who also were fosters) and the 2 questions I always got were a) were we Italian background? and b) are we Catholic? NO to both but my Dad did grow up Catholic.

    First off, I felt "Turning Red" was a good if not great film that was the newest in a long line of deeply personal passion projects that many saw themselves in and it's a shame it got caught up in the culture war non-sense and were too distracted by "IT'S A MOVIE FOR A DIFFERENT AUDIENCE" narrative. Second....yeah "Lightyear" was pretty mid and a super hard sell this being Andy's favorite movie and how it connects to the Toy Story universe.
    And THIRD....I haven't seen Elemental yet, but this ain't the first time people have said the movie is pretty much an allegory for first generation people stepping up to live to the expectations of their families and the struggles to both honor your family and roots while also exploring the world outside your own. I just hope it finds the audience and doesn't get swallowed up in the pre-hate this film got and didn't deserve.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  Год назад +1

      I agree with everything you said. I personally really enjoyed Turning Red and even though Lightyear is mostly forgettable, it wasn't a terrible film. I don't know why people assumed anything of Elemental outside of it being a movie a romantic story as that's what was advertised mostly, but it was genuinely my favorite Pixar film in a while, probably since Soul. I hope its a movie that picks up steam with word of mouth.

      @@ModernMouse Also "Turning Red" managed to escape the chops Pixar is infamous for when the film gets "too personal" as Brenda Chapman 's "Brave" was taken from her and changed her vision. "Turning Red" is Domee Shi's vision and personal story presented RAW and I feel that's a good direction for the studio to take; "Onward", "Turning Red", "Luca", "Elemental" and even to an extend "Soul" are these personal stories that may have begun as a thought on the creator's minds but became universal in its messages. We may not know what it feels to be an Asian teenage girl in the cusp of young adulthood that can turn into a red panda, but we know the struggles of being the best in the eyes of our parents while being true to ourselves. So just because a story is "personal" it doesn't meant it can't have reach and a presence that's universal.

      @@pap64 Completely! I think it's important that, even if it isn't our story, we can find ways to connect emotionally. Pixar is great at creating empathetic stories so why not lean into that!
