    I have always absolutely adored this Chopin Etude from the very first time I started to learn to play piano. There is something so beautifully haunting and poignant about it. I find it very hard to describe what i feel when I listen to this piece. It is like looking up to a night sky full of stars, reflecting on all the joy and sorrow you have experienced in your life and being at peace with sorrow and relishing in the joy and being ever hopeful. The piece does have a definite sense of sorrow about it but also has an incomparable sense of triumph over adversity which really adds to it's expressive power. In short it is an absolutely stunning piece of music!
    Sorry for waffling on so much but this piece of music means so much to me!

      I would really recommend learning the etude, some of the parts are very technical, especially the accelerando passages in the middle. But the fruits of your labour are well worth the price, playing a role in the expression of what is possibly one of Chopin's most beautiful pieces it truly a priviledge!

    • @openmusic3904
      @openmusic3904 7 лет назад +7

      I would say go for it and see how you do! The great thing about Etudes is that their primary purpose is to refine certain techniques, for example this Etude is written to refine polyphonic technique and legato technique. Even if you can't master the piece straight away, albeit that you practise it regularly it will improve your polyphonic technique that can be applied to the Bach invention. It will also improve your legato technique that can be applied to the Chopin Waltz so it's a win-win.

    I've heard this piece hundreds of times and my appreciation of it has evolved into strange places. I thought Lang was too slow and hammy with the introduction, but I've never heard a better rendition of the crazy, violent middle part.
    What I love about this piece is its extremes. It's almost two pieces-- the beginning and end, and that ferocious, difficult middle. Much praise for Lang for bringing feeling and confidence to the middle.

    • @BlessAllKC
      @BlessAllKC 9 лет назад +10

      Merritt I think the sharper contrast between the fast middle part & the slow opening & ending makes me feel more engaged & alert with the changes in feelings throughout the music!
      This performance of this Chopin Etude is the only one ( I've listened to all the other pianists posted on youtube) that truly makes me feel alive, as if I have just lost the excitement of discovery, and at the end, saddened because I can only find it again in my memories ! Lang Lang plays this to tell a story!!
      Other pianists play the entire composition a little too flat, without any noticeable contrast. While it's still a beautiful melody, but it doesn't evoke any strong feelings!

    in my opinion... the whole song represents life. the cantabile section represents life's wonders, love and/or also self pity, sadness or sorrow. the section after comes in with a lively dance representing all the thrills of life and perhaps a ballroom dance and then suddenly a giant crescendo to anger, rage and despair! and finally, in your later years; sitting on that deathbed just accepting death in a respectable manner.

    Lang has the strength of character to make what he plays his own, and he has the skill and knowledge to do it intelligently, confidently, and above all, as-he- feels-it. His music making breathes and pulses with life and emotion and THAT not only connects with his listeners, it embraces them.

    wow! this piece is in my opinion the most beautiful piece of music chopin has ever written and lang lang interpreted it the best possible way for my ears. who cares if he makes faces? I'd rather that than some robot with no visible emotion via facial expression. In fact his expressions add to the magic for me. If you dont like his facial expressions just scroll the page down and just listen while you read the comments section or something.

    • @richardvolpe7664
      @richardvolpe7664 8 месяцев назад

      You dare to imply insultingly (and ignorantly) that unless a pianist employs all manner of facial expressions (including Lang's almost pornographic "faces" as seen here), he deserves to be referred to as a robot? Let me tell you, Charlie, I've observed many, many "robots", then, who've delivered wonderfully sensitive, expressive performances of this piece, without resorting to Lang-like obscene - - yes, obscene, squirm-inducing mugging. What the hell - - you think his looks of sexual ecstasy were spontaneous? They've likely been practiced with as much care as he gave to learning the notes.

    • @nezkeys79
      @nezkeys79 8 месяцев назад

      @@richardvolpe7664you have reading comprehension. I never said or even implied a pianist has to pull all the same faces as Lang Lang. I said "who cares if Lang Lang does?" because whilst it isn't necessary at times the sound he produces is fantastic, especially here. I also quite clearly made a distinction that I would rather this than someone who pulls no faces and sounds worse
      Maybe if he didn't pull those faces we wouldn't get this beautiful sound. The point is I (and a lot of others no doubt) accept his "flaws" (ignorant way of describing his facial expressions and body language) because it's part of the beauty and artistry of what we are hearing. You on the other hand are obsessed with his "porno faces" and make that something bigger than it really is.
      As I said in my other comment. You don't have to watch him. You can just listen. I see you have zero subscribers, zero content, and are trolling many comments with your lang lang hating nonsense, even saying he can't tell a story and is playing easy pieces that require no skill. You think you're better than Lang Lang and have nothing to back that up. You have the audacity to preach about ignorance and what is insulting? Unbelievable arrogance

    Beautiful rendition by Lang Lang. I was asked to play this piece for my future mother-n-law after attempting to answer a lot of questions ahead of a first date with my future wife. The family was so formal and all five kids were probably more nervous than I as to what mom and dad might think of me. My "date" had heard from my friends I could play the piano - which was from an off campus party. But I really had not practiced anything for years (over seas military service) and was pretty rusty. Mom asked me if I knew the tune "there is love" - which I only recognized after she hummed a few bars. Fortunately the stars were aligned and it just happened to be one of the few easy to play standard Chopin pieces I learned as a child. I must have done okay as the family seemed to approve of me and Dad shook my hand/handed me the keys to their car. Funny how that all works.

    The speed at which he did the sixths chords in contrary motion was incredible. I've been trying to achieve that speed for a while now, and came o the conclusion that it was not possible for us mere human beings. Well, I suppose I was wrong. I'll have to keep trying now. It's actually quite reassuring that he can achieve that speed.

    my daughter just did the recital on this piece, after the recital , i try to find a master piece, and I found this and Kissin's , by far, I actually what LangLang's interpretation , some one might fell too slow or too fast, but I think you miss the part, lang lang is recreating this piece in his own way,,, i know, some one might not argee, but he had his own free spirit , just don't look the facial , just listen ,,,, i can feel chopin's spirit , which is great !!

    I think the reason that many people are uncomfortable with watching Lang Lang perform is because they are uncomfortable with his (over-exaggerated, to some) show of emotions. Our society is still uncomfortable with very blatantly open emotions, especially to see it on a stranger's face.... Nonetheless, this is a brilliant performance, and I give Lang Lang full applause for it.

    Incredible that concert artists like Lang Lang go onto the stage to give stellar performances like this no matter how bad they might be feeling that night. Ashkenazy once gave a performance of the Rachmaninoff Concerto No 3 at the Hollywood Bowl with a temp of 102F. I was ushering back then and overheard some backstage management talking about him possibly having to cancel. But in the end, trooper he is, he went out and gave a note-perfect performance. It takes superhuman strength like the Avengers to pursue this kind of a life. I just don't know how Rubinstein and Horowitz did it up to their 80's.

    Many of my friends aren’t into classical music, so therefore don’t appreciate it. I love how I can come to the comments section on RUclips and find like minded people who are moved by the music as much as I am. I often think about what in life it means to be ‘rich’, to live a ‘rich’ live, and although I don’t have a massive house or amazing cars etc etc, my life feels rich and meaningful, I dare say more than some billionaires, simply because I strive to understand and appreciate the finer things in life like classical music, spirituality and other arts that are born from the soul. Everything created from the soul is intrinsically linked together, it’s beautiful to be able to tap in to that and be transported to a higher level of being through music and art. Love to all.

    Absolutely astounding rendition. As much as I really can't stand excessive theatrics in terms of physical expression (particularly facial and in this case that shoulder thing) when it comes to pianists (with a notable few such as Gould), I have to admit that his interpretation was unique with a wide range of dynamics. Eye opening really.
