    I have received a large number of questions recently about the idea of unity gain and how it pertains to creating our presets on the Helix. I have also seen a lot of misguided information from other videos and discussions about it and thought I would put my two cents in on how approach the idea of unity gain. I really hope you find this to be useful information in creating your presets.
    As always, thanks so much for watching...

    THANKS! I'm using your method of setting up sound / tone, then with a loop playing slowly roll up volume (through channel, or output) until i get the desired DB in my DAW.

    Another great video, Jason - maybe one of your best ones yet! I mentioned in a comment on your previous gain staging video regarding this ridiculous concept going around of matching the tone to the unprocessed instrument level that the signal going to the Powercab would never be strong enough to work properly. Getting feedback was impossible, to point out just one problem with that concept. Glad you're here - thanks so much for this valuable info!!!

    Thanks for this test Jason. I was wondering about this after some statements made on a video I watched today and this proved them to be wrong and clears some stuff up for me.

    Thank you. The videos in the gain stage arc have been great. I had often heard about making the output of the amps be around the level as the output with no amp, and after messing around with it got input levels that didn't work in the DAW. The use of the phase inverter to prove the signals are the same by nulling them is a game changer. Thanks again!

    Thankyou Jason! Extremely interesting and useful! I had seen a number of people saying the output should be the same as the dry guitar. I was never sure where to put gains for various blocks, and was about to go and reset all my presets, but now armed with this info (and from the other gain staging video), it may not necessary. As always, your videos are a HUGE help to me.

    Thanks, great explanation! Still wondering,.. what is a "good" xlr output level (Lufs) to sent to foh? (Or just set to peak around -6?)

    Very good explained, Jason. I have had discussions several times on the german Facebook helix group about "is channel-vol affecting the sound" which I say "it's not". But there a always and everywhere people saying the opposit. It's pointless

    Thanks Jason! Pretty much what I was wondering about after watching your gain staging video. :) Now where does the Master Volume knob on the helix come into all this (when playing into an amp)? I find it really confusing to have this extra volume knob kind of "outside" the actual preset and often turn it off in the setting because I don't know where to put it.
    Keep up the good work!

      Yes, I am also unclear as to the use case for the Master Volume knob either in FOH/FRFR scenario or to an Amp. Is it the easy button for live scenario sound checks to give the sound person the level they need? Or is it for some other use cases? Great content Jason! Appreciate your guidance on this question.

      I always keep my volume knob in full and deal with level adjustments within the Helix, hope that helps :-)

      @@JasonSadites I'm in the "little dives gig" group of players, and I use FRFRs. My strategy has been to keep the physical Helix master at 12 so I can do a quick +/- overall volume adjustment without having to reach behind the speaker. Any disadvantage there?

    Great video very useful thanks for explaining, one question though how should i set the preamp on my audio interface? Or is it better to create the tone using usb output and then adjust preamp on the interface accordingly so i am not clipping?

    • @Zappabain
      @Zappabain Год назад

      you sure you don't want to use the helix itself as audio interface?

    Jason, I have a discussion with another youtuber(Steve Sterlacci) yet at this moment about unity gain. In his latest video he says that the output volume should be more or less the same as if you bypassed amp and cab! I tells him that is so wrong. He answers that is his personal opinion 😅.
    I'll gave up

    • @JasonSadites
      @JasonSadites  3 года назад

      Steve is a great guy and a good friend. I haven't seen his video on this topic, but it is most certainly is not correct to have unity gain between amp and cab bypassed vs. engaged as I showed in this video :-)

    Great video Sir. Thanks. But I think I need a clarification; where are we supposing the "volume knob" of the Hx Stomp to be? At noon? Two o'clock?

      @@JasonSadites Thank you. But how to manage the volume changes? A volume pedal? Or different volume levels set in the preset by snapshots? Sorry for wrap up questions:)))

  • @alex-kenivel

    I guess i'll be going against the grain here, and Jason and I have talked about this on Facebook before. I have been a proprietor in leveling presets according to my instrument's dry level SPECIFICALLY in the case where my Stomp at a gig is SEVERELY overloading the channel at FoH -- most likely due to ignorance of the mixer operator -- and that level has been -9 to -12 db. This gives plenty of room to turn up on the mixer channel if needed and I dont have to worry about the gain staging set up for that channel's usual house microphone, which is what I KNOW is the problem at these venues. My Stomp isn't sending out MIC level and they don't know how to pad it or change it in any way. Sure, I could just crank down the output level on my Stomp but then I'm not sending a healthy enough level to my own monitoring rig.
