Having just redone it in New Game+, I thought it was excellent--moreso for what it set up. We're going back to the 13th. That is absolutely happening. Zero will play a part, Durante will play a part, I'll even be surprised if Jullus doesn't play a part.
I was beyond impressed at how faithful FFXIV's writers are to the rules they established. A lot of people predicted that Zero was going to be Zeromus. Seemed like a slam dunk. What almost nobody predicted was, Zeromus forming from Zodiark's aether.
When we destroyed Zodiark on the Source, his aether dissipated on all the other shards--except the one where nothing can die. On the 13th, it just coalesced into a being all its own. Sensing this, Golbez refused to allow any other voidsent into his domain on the moon--even his Archfiends (they all appeared remotely). He didn't even want to take a chance on anything merging with this voidsent until the time was right. People were so fixated on the red herring of Zero/Zeromus, they completely forgot about the rules of the 13th, even though the writers were continually batting us over the forehead with it ("NOTHING CAN DIE HERE").
The story of the voidsent also hit me. I thought they were monsters before post-EW. I didn't think of them as people trapped in a wheel they couldn't escape. Imagine if your life was kill or be killed 24/7. Ciriatto and Farfarello, two voidsent in Zero's domain literally fed on each other's aether to try and escape said wheel. And even if you give in and allow yourself to be devoured, some part of you lives on inside the one that devoured you. There is no escape.
When Barbariccia showed up at Zero's domain and consumed two voidsent, she might as well have snuffed out two scared animals--because that's what the 13th made them become.
Post-EW may not have been everyone's cup of tea, but I loved it, and I'm eagerly awaiting a return to the 13th. That story needs to be concluded.

Felt like a sidequest, similar to Sorrows of werlyt.
6.1-6.4 could have been a real setup arc for dawntrail so we don't feel like we are going in blind, could have introduced the new jobs and a starting city before we even got to the expansion, giving players a hands on experience with the new systems.
I feel like Endwalker needed more content, and having 6.1-6.4 as a sidequest with another MSQ completely would have patched up what felt like an empty post-expansion.

Endwalker after 6.0 also felt shallow to me but maybe it's because I didn't enjoy some of the things they did add. Criterion Dungeons weren't quite what I hoped for, and the Island Sanctuary isn't my idea of fun.
      Also, Sorrows was GREAT.

    EEEEEEEEEE new video! 🎉
My only complaint was I wish we'd gotten more of the 13th, like you mentioned, and I have all the faith in the world that we will return to that story in the future, armed with whatever knowledge we gain from our next adventure. I feel like there's a huge opportunity with the transfer of elements we gained from the patch quests, and I'm excited to see how it comes into the story later.
My one sadness that I cannot see them going into enough is the Unukalhai/Cylva connection just given how much players would need to do to be introduced to them. However, if they want to handwave a reason for them to be included more for the people that haven't done their stories, that's alright with me 😂

It kinda the only one that fits in perfectly with the innitial storyline and i always include it in when i rank the expansions.

I honestly liked the start, when we went more into the void stuff. The world building there is done super effectively and is really cool. How they sort of manifest domains, can't die and thus have this kill or be killed society. It holds massive potential. That bit where you walk around in Zero's domain with the sad music and the remnants of what you can only assume is her humanity, was great. I liked Golbez well enough, though I am especially keen on helping Golbez realize that Durante is also worthwhile of redemption. You never really get that personal moment with him, because "Golbez" is sort of always between you and the man he once was. I am really keen to see where we go with the 13th and those two, so from that angle the patch content was a great success for me personally. I can sort of see how people didn't like the hyper fixation on Zero. It also felt like some of the patches treaded similar ground (especially with regards to Zero and her growing sense of humanity). I think the arc could've probably achieved something similar in 3 patches rather than 5. Also the core of the story, if righting mistakes of the past, was pretty well executed. That idea that if Zero's heart hadn't already been blackened by the time she met Durante and Golbez, everything could've been different. But that doesn't mean they can't still come together and try to change what has passed. I really liked that bit. I sort of dislike how people boil it down to power of friendship.

The story was mostly filler for Dawntrail to me but I kinda want to focus on the Thirteenth. The Thirteenth stuff is awesome, and I wish they would do more with it but I don't think they will ever use it again because if they ever try to save the thirteenth in any main story, they would have to force people to do the Warring Triad(for Unukalhai cause I don't see them doing anymore without him) and the ShB role quests to get the void quest line and after the backlash/complaining of people having to do Crystal Towers for ShB. I don't think they are willing to try it again, but I hope I'm wrong!

I didn't mind it. Your grading is spot on. For me I liked that we got to explore the void a bit but I mostly like that it was only for a bit... The idea of an entire expansion on the void sounds awful. Glad we got a bit of a taste/conclusion to it before we get into the meat of dawntrail!

I think people were expecting too much but post-EW was a different beast to previous post expansion stories, which were usually tying off loose ends and wrapping up a given expansion’s plot. In some ways it was a trial series story plus a bit more but it’s main focus seemed to be set up for the future, giving the Void more context and fleshing it out for future use as well as finally answer where the last of the Great Wyrms were. I dare say we’ll see a bit more of the Allagans and Mhachi seeing as they have connections to the Void.

I agree with you. S tier stories like 5.0, 5.3 and 6.0 are hard to follow. Still, as its own story that started from scratch, I liked it. I was mostly impressed by the world building and Zero & Jullus characters. I liked their development and I'm excited what it sets up for the future. Kinda similar to what Warriors of Darkness set up from 3.1 to 3.4 in HW. Could be a huge payoff in the future.

  • @Zhyiber
    @Zhyiber 3 месяца назад

I totally understand if the post content story wasn't everyone's favorite, but I think people forget that they sometimes do stories that aren't really important until later on and it's more of a setup to a future storyline. The Thirteenth I feel like is such a big plot point especially to shard travel that Y'shtola seems highly fixated on to just do post game and forget about it. If I remember correctly from when EW first came out, the post content was supposed to be a bridge to the next saga. How that was going to be done was unknown unless that was a mistranslation. Whether it immediately connects or not, we don't really know the direction of this next saga.
The way I see it is kind of another warriors of darkness situation from Heavensward where they establish these bits of lore and world building. We do a few things with it and then these plot points and bits of information we received won't come back until later on in the saga. I definitely feel like the Thirteenth will have its own full blown expansion later on at some point.
Also keep in mind with the new updated map we now see Meracydia at the bottom which tells us we will be going there at some point during this saga. Yes Meracydia ties into the dragon stuff, but people also need to remember that Meracydia's history also has ties with the void due to their war against the Allagans. If the Void was involved I'm sure they should have left some scars on their lands
I don't think they would have just added such a story if it wasn't going to be important cause otherwise, like others have said, this could have just been made into a side story like the Sorrow of Werlyt if it had nothing to do with the MSQ or the future of our story and we could have just focused more on adventuring a bit and have more lead up to the whole contest in Tural thing. If the future doesn't lead us back to the thirteenth then I definitely will agree that the post game story should have been a side story but I will wait and see the direction they go.

Original Golbez was an Azem shard.
Original Durante was a Zenos shard
And Zero was...if she had more time and didn't have to basically do a Power of Friendship Speedrun she could've been better.
I thought this patch series was pretty bad, basically a trial series graduated up to MSQ...but I'm hoping I can revise that down the line when an xpac that goes back to this stuff touches it

6.1 - .4 were adequate. 6.5 literally made us do the exact same thing as the previous patch. In 6.4 you had to walk around and ask people for permission to use a tower to move aether to the 13th. Then we waited 4 months for 6.5 to make us walk around and ask people for permission to use a tower to move aether to the 13th. I was not amused. It was a trial series stretched out as a filler arc and it showed.

Hold on to your hats, folks, this is a long one. Just in case: *SPOILERS!*
TL;DR, Like Endwalker itself, I think Post-EW could've been done much better, but I still liked it.
Post Endwalker was a bit crazy, for a number of reasons. It ultimately was a love story to FFIV, which, while certainly good, felt disappointing compared to the rest of the Post-game content. Most of the post content usually is a setup for the next expansion, about two or so patches in. We got...only a bit of that in 6.55 with Wuk Lamet at the end. I feel that if the whole Void thing was a set up what's to come in DT eventually, then it failed to do so. I could very much be wrong on this though, because we still have that one place that looks like a cyberpunk city (District 9 I think? Please someone tell me what it's called, I legitimately can't remember). I can't see that being on the Source at all.
Despite the predictability of her story, I do like Zero. An interesting design, especially for a Reaper character, and it was nice to give someone a bit of a push in the right direction to help her world. Same with Golbez, or Durante I should say, though I think his redemption was VERY rushed and poorly at that. I also really like Troia castle, it reminds me of the Dark Cloud series on PS2, castle and literal dark clouds and all..
Now in a meta sense...I have more of a love-hate relationship with it. I think, along with Endwalker itself, it made people far too impatient in this game. People wanted to rush everything and got bored far too quickly with everything after the patches dropped. And as a result, it makes things more insane and sometimes intense for everyone else as well, especially for Sprouts who don't know what they're doing just yet. The community is not as perfect as people say it is, and I feel it really showed its ugly side with this post content.
    Slight tangent
It's likely that it had to do with FFXVI development, but I really feel they dropped the ball with Endwalker, especially after Shadowbringers. One thing that really urks me as well are the retcons they did *to* ShB's set up in EW, and I still believe EW's story should have been split in two. Have us go to Garleamald at 87-88 and the moon at 89-90, have the Elpis, maybe even in Pandæmonium itself, be shown in Post EW and show what happened within the star itself rather then the Endsinger causing the destruction of the universe. And then have the rest of it taking down big threats in the Final Days. If we had to go to space, then put it in the next expansion. I know they wanted to get the Zodiark and Hydaelyn story over and done with, but ending it at level 100 would've been more fitting.
Overall, I give it a C, not bad but far from great. Like I said, they really dropped the ball with this one, and it just feels the could've done better. But that's just me. Everyone obviously has different takes on this stuff. And maybe Dawntrail will show something else entirely. (Of course it will, it's new expansion, but you get what I mean I hope.)

6.1 was Pog. Chill downtime after the end of base MSQ.
6.2-6.4 bothered me because Zero was such an edgelord, and it was very... nostalgiabait JRPG thing of big bad sending underlings to fight you one by one.
6.5 was a great redemption because they shared more of Zero's backstory and all of Durante/Golbez's. They were all so boring and corny until here, when they started throwing twists.
I understand plot points with the moon and such are FF4 references, but if Golbez deviates from how he is in FF4, then why not make him a fresh, original character? I felt like I was missing some of the impact because I didn't play the source material.

    • @StoutHelm
      @StoutHelm  3 месяца назад

Probably because Golbez was a foundation that already existed to adapt. This felt shallow from a development resources perspective. Adapting existing FF is much easier than creating all original content. Especially with FF16 and Dawntrail both being worked on at the same time (I'm assuming)

what made me dislike the patch series was the pacing. it's definitely not a problem when playing all of them in one go, but having to wait 2 months for a patch that's - do some side story for 2h, go to the fucking moon for 30min and have the npc's just go "we need to leave immediately"

Wanted to like it, but the patch format is really killing the storytelling and world building. Everything is so disjointed. Stakes are inconsistent, and pacing was absolutely butchered by the format. I think this definitely would be loveable and solid if it didn't need to be spliced into 5 chunks.
