Louis Armstrong, also known as “Ambassador Satch,” was unofficially adopted by a family of Jewish immigrants from Lithuania who had a junk hauling business in Louisiana. Born in New Orleans, Armstrong dropped out of school to earn money for his family in fifth grade, and started working as a delivery boy for the Karnofskys. They soon started feeding him hot meals each night, and even gave him a bed to sleep in. They fed him in other ways too: they lent him five dollars so he could buy his first cornet, and encouraged him to sing. Later in life, Armstrong would write about both the kindness of the Karnofskys and the discrimination they withstood as Jews.

They were often used to do the most unpopular jobs that the local ruler wanted done, but wanted someone else to take the blame for--like tax collection for him.

@@anewwaveanewbeginning3606 Why so? To be more clear I'm of the reformed sect, so hebrew school was 4 hrs per week. They taught us endlessly about the holocaust and the 'history' of Israel, but other than that strictly Torah and the Hebrew language.

@@anewwaveanewbeginning3606 Oh, I agree with you entirely. I'm very proud to be Jewish, but I am fiercely against Zionism and feel it stemmed from that brand of propaganda. I learned a lot of the ways they've described attacks on Israel to me back then omitted a lot of serious details. Obviously he doesn't speak for all, but a Zionist once told me "Zionism means that if you're not a Jew you're a dog" which I think is obviously a disgusting mentality.
@@adamsutton9104 I was surfing the internet one day, and came across some people claiming to have found literally hundreds of articles from the NYT about a "holocaust" from before WW2. I thought it sounded impossible, so I went on the NYT archives to verify, and they were there. You can do the same.
There was an article from 1905 claiming that the Tsar had killed or exiled 6 million Jewish families, another article from 1921 saying that the communists had killed 6 million Jews, and another from 1936 saying that Hitler was doing it. There were hundreds of other articles mentioning a holocaust of 6 million Jews, but most of them don't refer to Jews actually dying.
An absolute treasure trove of knowledge and history condensed so beautifully, God bless Thomas Sowell.

I appreciated that this video mentioned the Hindu origin of the so-called "Arabic" numerals. There was and still is a tendency of Muslims to take credit for many mathematical and scientific achievements they only appropriated from other cultures during centuries of Islamic conquests.

@@DuchessMari Is that article online? It's probably banned in all Islamic regimes. I once saw an Islamic calendar in English that featured many supposed scientific discoveries and inventions in its medieval "golden age". Apparently since then, there has been very little such work in the Islamic lands. The Quran contains around 60 scientific errors, yet it is supposed to be a perfect book sent down from their god. Just to even point this out is a crime in Islamic regimes. So that tends to discourage a lot of scientific work!

@@DuchessMari Yes, one can write a book wihtou any solid historical evidence but express opinion and see it as fact. The works of muslim scholars are still available. Unlike the western European civilization where they white wash or erase history as if it there was no other Civilisation existed, Islamic empires achievement is built on and improved on finding of others. For these reason most Jews flourished under Islamic rule. Hence you have likes of Maimondes living in Islamic territory. The misstreatment of Jews was exception but was not the norm.

I don't think it's "intolerant" of the Jews and Christians to have rejected and refused to worship other gods (which they considered illegitimate or non-existent). They weren't saying that everyone else had to reject their gods and adopt the Jewish or Christian beliefs. In my opinion, intolerance is trying to force the Jews and Christians to embrace the beliefs of everyone else.
As an ex-atheist who became a Christian 30 years ago, I agree. People should be able to talk about different ideas and beliefs and others can respectfully and robustly in a civilised manner contest any beliefs. Then after a discussion continue on with life until the next opportunity to engage in further civil discourse.

Apparently you have not read the bible: you don't have to read the whole Bible,the old testament will be sufficient. you may be surprised, but most jews know pretty well who their relatives are way longer than 150 years. Also, if you think this is detailed... well he skipped 99% of the IMPORTANT things that happened, even official sources and histories - because he tries to press Jewish immense and versatile history into 50 minutes (People study Jewish history for dozens of years in the University without covering even 10% of what's known, proven, has documentation and so on). This rather marvelous lecture is just drawing the very-general high-level "story" of the Jews, and (in my humble opinion) skipping some of the most important aspects. BTW he talks about all Jews diaspora, but the photos and other footage completely ignores the "Sephardim" or Jews of the islamic world. Not a single photo or video. Wonder why - but my guess is -- Americans (target audience) have very clear caricature of "what a jew looks like" that is taken right out of the antisemitic books of European Jew-haters, and he wanted watchers to feel they're seeing something familiar (like in Hollywood). Anyways, in Tel-Aviv, Israel there is a rather amazing museum called "House of the Diaspora" that collects lots of information about Jewish diaspora. They have a wall on which endless loop of random photos of Jewish Faces from all around the world is being presented --- I can assure you this wall alone, after 10 minutes would completely change your mind about "How a jew looks like". It did to me... as a Sephardic Jew.

I have seen some bias, though it is very hard to recognize. He is definitely leaning towards socialism and liberalism in a lot of scenarios.

Look, in Turkey, for instance (Modern Turkey) Jews (my family) although living there for 500 years or more (moved there from Spain around 1498) were forbidden by law to own land. Not even the land on which they built their homes. So whenever someone wanted to hurt them - they could be easily told "get off my land" and they would lose their home too. For hundreds of years, they were forced to have occupations that could MOVE with the, wherever they go. There aren't too many such. Before the era of electronic communications people were not generally free to move. You NEEDED your community around you too. So - many jews took on commerce and finance and physicians and lawyers, and advisors roles. My grandfather served in the Turkish army (in the 30s and early 40s of 20th century) and was a Mechanic. He rented a workshop and bought tools - but was always terrified that he may need to move - and that all his investment would vaporize . Finally, when Israel was established, the Family decided to move to Israel - and they literally had to just go. with nothing at all. They could not sell their 3 story home. Not the tools. not the clientele, they came to Israel with absolutely nothing.
