The RIDICULOUSLY expensive cost of living in Nome, Alaska (you won't believe how much water costs)

- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- This week dad (Steve Riedel) joins me and Alex to show you just how expensive it is to live in Nome! We shop for groceries, beer, vehicles, utilities, and other regular goods and services and compare those prices to those you might find in a big city like Seattle, Washington.
Alaska consistently ranks at the top of the list of highest-cost of living states in the US because of its extreme weather, lack of infrastructure, remoteness, and low population density. However, Alaska is divided even further between those who live on the road system that is connected to Canada and the US, and those who don't. And for those places aren't connected to the road, like Nome, the costs of local goods and services can make your jaw drop.

Alaska. I’ve been to Hawaii it doesn’t seem that much more than New Jersey. Except gas and milk. That was a lot in Hawaii. Average items were only slightly more.
Maui Hawaii. Which might not be bad compared to other areas in Hawaii.

My nexct door neighbor works exclusively in Alaska as a contractor. He owns a shed up there somewhere. He stores all his equipment there. Brings all his crew up from Florida with him. They make almost 3x what they can make doing the same work here in florida. It does cost more to live there though, but they mostly sleep in the building he has. They also bring a truckload of supplies from Florida so they dont have to buy stuff like Water at $10 a bottle. Doing that allows him to work 2 - 3 months up there, then come home for a month then back again. He only works about 8 months a year and takes home over double what he would make here after all the bills are paid.
Smart man. That's the way to do it.

8 months a year work in middle of nowhere ? What kind life is that ? No life !
@@dannydanny1034 An ideal life for a huge number of people who are sick of living in the overpopulated warrens we call cities.
Double or triple pay for the same work, with the ability to retire from needing full time work at 40 with a nice nest egg and live the rest of your life at your own pace.
My entire family is from Nome or King island and this comment section is hilarious 😂. The majority of all grocery store items are shipped by plane year round and the summer months are incredible short compared to other places around the world. My entire family is full of highly experienced hunters that provides subsistence for the elderly members and the food supply carries them through the year. A person could potentially survive the entire winter with the numerous varieties of berries available around the lands during the summer months. Long story short this video is covering the convenience of standard living for those people who don't know how to live off the land.
Unless you live on the Yukon where fishing is shut down even for subsistence. It is becoming harder to live off the land and it depends on where you live. The interior of Alaska where I live is much harder to live off of. When I lived in SE AK it was easy, and even on the YK delta where I was for two years it was easier than the interior.
Yeah they want a condo in the middle of nowhere and expect Uber eats to be available like Jimmy John's lol
Do you know how subsistence hunting and fishing permits work? From my reading, it is very hard to get subsistence hunting rights, even if you live in a rural area. It may be different for native Alaskans, I don’t know.
I was looking at the numbers for taking one moose a season, and the costs come out to well over $1k, if not over $2k, most of it going to the state as permit and harvesting fees.
I somehow doubt that $1k-$2k per animal would control food costs much for people in Nome. Please let me know if I am overlooking something.
What happened in the movie the 4th kind ?

I was stationed at Ft. Rich, then came back and eventually retired there. If you live in a big town, things can be much less. Much of the high prices are a residue of the "Pipeline days". A lot of big money and high paying jobs, and peoples greed, eventually caused things to become more expensive.
The later part of my career I was in an aviation unit, and been all over Alaska. Things cost a lot the further in the bush you go. But prices seem to still end up higher. Also, when the pipeline and oil began to flow, someone with insight, started the "Dividend" and made it such that the residents could share in the oil profits.
There is so much to appreciate about Alaska. That was why I came back and eventually retired here.
That's why a lot of the people still live off the land. Seeing relatives post the cost of living of just detergent is insane. Thank you for bringing awareness 🙌🏽

@Don’t worry about it No, I am going to accept that, today, I will encounter insolence, ingratitude, disloyalty, selfishness, and ill-will, all due to the offenders ignorance of the nature of good and evil.
You may continue to judge people if you want, but it only shows them your foolishness, rather then your intended goal.
I was thinking this too. There is alot of big game hunting and other resources in Alaska, if you know what you're doing. These people do not look like they would have a clue. They would have go be part of a larger community or family to be taught how to live off the land.
Back in the '80s, I was getting constant telemarketing calls. They would even leave messages on my answering machine.
I finally had my GF record a new message on my machine that went "Thank you for calling the Nome Alaska State Park. Please leave a message." Keep in mind, we paid long distance charges back then, and a call to Alaska was something like $5.00 a minute. People could not hand up fast enough lol.

This is totally insane! I live in Norway, where we are used to high prices, but this takes the cake.
I was in Nome for 5 months as a Travel Nurse, and almost everyone makes good money there.
It's ironic that in a place with so much snow, the price of water is so ridiculously expensive.
Ikr you’re surrounded by water lol
Maybe the snow is contaminated with micro bits of plastic, like everywhere else.
Every snowflake starts with a speck of dust. The ice crystals form around something floating in the air. So it probably would be cleaner than something in your local Creek but it might be loaded with things as far away as Japan's fukushima.
Collect your own water EZ
snow doesn't equal drinking water...neither does salt water. we probably made it even and it still costs us more. you have to pay every person who touches that and every vehicle it's on. that equals 40$ water. this isn't new info 🤣
I just completed four years in Nome and now am in Anchorage. Emily is very cool and is right on the money here. The costs in Nome are outrageous. I paid $300 a month for internet. Now in Anchorage I pay $89 for the same thing. All utilities are expensive. But the cost of food is what really kills you. Once I got back to Anchorage this past summer I was shocked at how much cheaper everything is. One more time Emily is seriously cool. She's so smart and so good looking!
How do people afford it though? Is salary a lot higher? Thanks 😊
@@baby5968 Salary isn't that much higher, in fact, some salaries are the same as if you lived in the lower 48. So basically, it's not worth it.

Starlink should eventually work at that latitude . $99 a month plus the cost of the gear.
As far as the internet goes....keep an eye on Starlink. They stopped the beta testing. They launch about 60+ satellites a months. They are designed with the rural areas in mind. It's about $99 a month.
Starlink is very popular among off-grid homesteading people which in most cases are located in very rural areas.

@@indigenous31617 From all the materials I've received from them, the data is unlimited, at roughly 100 mbps speeds, although that might be a bit lower in polar areas. I was stationed in Hawaii in the 90’s so I know exactly what y’all are talking about. Hawaii is probably the most expensive state to live in. My daycare was $250 a week per child(I had 2) and my ex-wife didn’t have to pay child support so I was broke the entire 4 years there. Eating out in Hawaii was a luxury.

I live in Alaska. It's definitely more expensive here than the lower 48 in regards to food and most goods, but it's not too far out of whack that it makes it not worth it to live here with everything great the state has to offer that you can't find in the lower 48. Nome is also extremely exceptional because it's about 500 miles away from the road network and is only accessible by plane or boat. Hence why everything is an insane cost there.
My first experience of this type of pricing was when i went over to Western Australia to do some metal detecting in the goldfields. Fuel was about $1.20 a litre and as soon as you cross the boarder from South Australia to Western Australia onto the Nullarbor Plain, the price of fuel jumped to just over $2.00 a litre and went even higher the more remote, but i also noticed alcohol seemed to be about normal price. I'm guessing so much alcohol is moved in mining towns that it makes sense to keep it at a reasonable price to keep everyone somewhat happy as the mining life ain't a easy one and even if you are making crazy money it's still a hard days work! 😁

Emily you should start a food bank in nome and get some sponsors to send 5 containers to your food warehouse. Hell, maybe you could get the sponsors to build it too! Your dad Steve should get some Fed grants to assist toward that endeavor, cause you know something’s gotta improve with those outlandish costs to you, your employees and families. Gotta be rough, sounds like the times back in the olden days of Deadwood SD gold rush.
WAKE UO IDIOTS NOW: It costs money to ship building supplies to Nome. There is no road or highway. The only way to get to Nome, as far as shipments, is by cargo plane. The fastest and most efficient means to set up a warehouse would be to transport empty shipping containers, if a cargo plane could handle the size and/or weight. Yet, those would have to be purchased, and transporting them would also be costly. There is no "easy" or "economical" access to Nome. I was born in Alaska while it was still a territory. Nome has never been an easy or cheap place to live. Actually, the natives who founded the town, 60+ years ago, lived easier than "modern day" residents, as they lived off the land and had excellent survival skills and knowledge.
@@vickimeyers2672 - You sound very angry. Perhaps you should consider moving.
Painful reality: if the prices were not high then no one would deliver goods that far.
The shippers are shipping loads that are too small. If they had giant shiploads of stuff delivered to Nome the cost per item would be much less.
Well, here in Taiwan, things in COSTCO are almost inexpensive as in the US. But you may buy imported things even cheaper in the local Carrefour that match pretty much the prices of local Taiwanese produce. This is why I also consider these Alaskan prices so ridiculous, too. They're bankrupting the middle class for more control, small businesses are hurting badly and everything is about to get far worse with JAB mandates... Hope you guys are well over there, I know Australia has it horrible with lockdowns...
@@atcmadness4351 I can go to aldi and spend 75 dollars for kind of a week's worth of food...obviously nothing that good.
As my friend and his wife said if you live in Alaska and you can't eat what mother nature provides then you better be rich. He spent over 6k making his own greenhouse to grow vegetables. They obviously hunt and fish. The cost of shipping is insane. I called send a package cheaper but I also insure it just in case. My buddy also informed me that if it isn't Alaska strong it's not worth it
Thanks for this tour! NYC might be expensive to rent in, but you can get a decent meal for under $10 in lots of the local places. It's scary how food a necessity can take up so much of a families expenses in Nome.
You burn alot of calories to stay warm at that climate.
Where do you get a decent meal for under $10? Maybe in like deep queens, but in Manhattan?
Good point you make here. Property is more expensive to buy or rent in NYC than Alaska. So ya, one must exam so many things when calculating the standard of living from one area to another.
I didnt knew you had a channel, always watched the show, love your work Emily
Your Dad is great he so funny. 😂 I can't believe how expensive it is over there. I could do you car service for around £100. I knew the price of vehicles where crazy in the US But Nome takes it to another level. Tc and stay safe until the next one. 🏴✌👍
I'm glad you liked watching him! He cracked us up at the store. The vehicle prices are exceptionally bad here!

Everyone should post their weekly grocery bill for all foods period. That's a good benchmark, for 2 adults and children on budget shopping here in GR, MI in the USA we are at @$120 a week for food and household essentials. Food, snacks, bags, foil, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towel ect
Family of 5, we average about 1000-1200 a month.
During the Wests gold rush, the shop keepers made the most money, nothing has changed 👍
No, as someone who is native from this area. It's air freight that makes things expensive. We don't live on the road system. I'm just asking nicely, if you haven't grown up in rural Alaska, don't coment.

Hi Emily. So glad I found this video. Wow it's expensive up there! Have always admired your tenacity, and your work ethic on the show! Good luck in the future and getting all the gold!!!
Alaska is one of the most fascinating states in the country. I'd move there in a heartbeat.
Can't remember the cost of living being so high, except in the cost of my time. Hunted for parka squirrel, rabbit, ptarmigan all summer and winter for the last 2. The salmon run in the Nome River was always a winner for getting my salmon, Counsel for the greyling. Dried and smoked. And then my annual moose every fall which lasted all year. Then had my own garden in the summer, blueberry and salmon berry canning in the fall. Baked my own bread. Only thing I bought at the store was eggs, milk once in a while, butter, and then the basics flour, salt, sugar, etc. Why, in the middle of all that bounty, would you be eating at the Polar Cub, or the grocery store?? City slickers...
Exactly, and isn't the point of living in Alaska to live wild or homestead and establish anyway?
@@TheQuietAmp not exactly, though it's nice having that option.
Don't fall into the DNC mistake of thinking we all want to be Park Rangers. Nope
What did you do to earn a living whilst hunting and fishing and canning and all that homey stuff?

Yeah pretty much exactly the same cost to live in Hawaii for groceries. Oil changes for an F150 synthetic oil in Hawaii is about $90, internet is cheap in Hawaii. I need internet for work and can't have a data cap, so I couldn't even imagine spending $500+ a month for speeds I couldn't even really use for what I do.... It would have been interesting to see the cost of house/apartment rentals in Nome. This video was VERY interesting. Thank you for uploading!
Lived in Fairbanks for 19 months. I didn’t have to pay water but I did pay electric. Compared to hot seasons in lower Alabama in a 2 story house with 2 ac units running vs a mild summer in Fairbanks with no ac…crazy. And it’s worst in the winter when you kick the heat on. We are talking a $200 bill vs a $600 bill. Alaska is pretty but I’m glad to be away from a state where the cost of living is crazy high.
You guys are hilarious! I burst out laughing several times listening to you all talk. Awesome video, thanks for sharing!
I played golf with a teacher here in NW AR who wanted to retire from teaching in AK. But every year he went back because the pay was so good.
I flew as a commercial pilot out of Nome Alaska during the 1990's...long before GPS satellites were invented. Gold planners would come to Nome in the summer making around $100 a day planning gold on the beach. In 1990 a gallon of milk cost $5.35 a gallon. Everything was expensive and and there was a huge dredge offshore dredging for gold. It ran 24/7 and crew changes were by helicopters.
....what point are you trying to get out here? you had like 5 stories with no ending, and no beginning
@@firstlast476welcome to Nome lol
That water price killed me, where I live in another state that is also covered in flowing in water, Oregon. They sometimes give flats of that water away at stores. But even free is a deal breaker because it already comes out of my faucet. Water is so cheap in Oregon, the street people buy it just to return the bottles for deposit. Yes that is correct, the flat of water is cheaper than the bottle deposit.
"Street People"?? Where can you buy water without having to pay deposit on the bottles?
Do you understand how bottle deposit works?
Something doesn't add up in this story...

Go to the oilfields in Texas or up north. Good pay.
Its like being on an island, you pay the price plus boat gas on top of everything, it pretty much doubles or triples the price. Its the same in the Bahamas.
There's so many jobs open in Alaska, in the construction area especially, that pay ridiculous hourly wages. And I'm always thinking about it, but the freaking weather is not for me. I was born and raised in Sicily, which is sunny and warm year round. I would adjust, I adjusted to new York weather, but still, the winters, ide end up with a kid a year.
There are quite a few Pacific Islanders (Hawaiians, Guamanians, Micronesians etc.) that would go up to Alaska to work on the fishing/crabbing boats (in the winter). Normally, they only lasted one season and vowed to never go back up there again.
There is no sales tax in Alaska. Also.....no income tax. And the U.S. government still pays you to live in the state. Just my income tax in the lower 48 is over $1000 a month.... So them complaining of the cost.....

Day-to-day life here is one of the biggest hidden costs in the business
Everything perishable is flown in. The cost of shipping trucks and equipment is expensive whether it comes by barge or by plane. Produce: You buy it, you eat it that day! It's not going last too long once you get it home. I would have to wrap produce in bubble wrap to protect it from the elements when flying to Gamble or Savoonga.
I wouldn't be living there at all. That's ridiculous . Must be almost all rich people there. If not how do people survive if they aren't living off the land ?

There is an actual Starlink base station in Nome. $499 for the kit and $99 a month
We live in the country outside a small town in North Carolina. We were lucky we could hookup to spectrum where we got internet, cable TV and home phone for under $100.
If we wouldn't have been able to hookup with them. For internet the option was Hughes net, which was $75 for snail paced download and upload speeds. Plus it would have been easy to steal our signal.
My husband and I talk about moving back up towards the northern states in the lower 48(we were born and raised in Minnesota). We have liked the past 10 years with only one year with measurable snow. But starting to crave the northern states again.
Starlink is not available here yet. The station is there but the satellites are not. As of 10/7 the Telalaska competitor started offering 2gb unlimited service for $191/month
Emily, I sure hope your Dad get on & stays on Meds, I take mine & all the people around me have a better life for it. Best to your Pops
We have the same situation here in Sweden. Everything that needs to be imported (over 60% of everything we eat and need for us to live) comes by boat, airplane or toll bridges from the main land of Europe. The import of goods costs always a lot of money because of that... and the high import taxes of 25% on top of that.
