As a huge fan of the original Blade Runner, I was damn worried that they would go in the typical reboot/sequel fashion with this. Blade Runner is one of those films that doesn't really need a sequel, it's a perfect self-contained story. So I've never been so nervous about stepping into a theater before. But boy oh boy, was I glad to be wrong. Best movie of the year, and I'd even go as far as to say it's one of the best sequels ever made, on par with films like Empire Strikes Back and The Godfather Part II. It may sound like I'm overpraising it but seriously, it's THAT good. I fully agree that it's not a film for everyone and for those that found it boring and slow, I accept those opinions. But god damn, I loved it.
Agreed. I was happy and nervous when I heard a sequel was being made, especially since the original Blade Runner is my favorite movie. @G Farnsworth That’s pretty much what I thought was the reason people online claim to like it. It’s one of the few slow films in awhile. The thing is that I feel like it has completely generic Hollywood sequel plot, and it didn’t really revolutionize things like the first Blade Runner. I get thinking it’s ingenious compared to a Marvel movie or something, but alongside Space Odyssey or the First Blade Runner it didn’t bring anything new to the table and it’s not going to hold up. It’s just going to remembered as an unusually slow movie for the last decade.
Possibly the best movie Ive seen the last decade. Dont remember having such a powerful experience in a movie theater since I was a young impressionable kid.
I didn’t think Hollywood was even capable of producing a movie like this anymore. I was utterly blown away and I left the theater speechless and deep in thought. The shorts created to bridge the stories are equally impressive given how short they are. I recently rewatched everything back-to-back-to-back (starting with the Final Cut of the original) and my brain melted from the awesomness of it all.
The director released a 15 minute short film taking place between the first and second film called Blade Runner Black Out 2022 that helps to clarify some of the references made in 2049, and its available to stream on Crunchyroll though also believe its on youtube as well. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Blade Runner 2049 or who plans to see it.
It's a shame nobody went to see the movie, coz 2049 has been one of, if not the most amazing experience I've had on a cinema. The movie is incredibly good on it's own but what set the experience apart were the visuals and especially the audio. I went with a friend and we went forward to the third line of the cinema (we were alone). And it was freaking intense. @G Farnsworth I dont think you need action every 5 minutes - Shawshank redemption is great. This movie was too slow for me, it did not do enough to reel me in. In my opinion!
2:24 This movie doesn’t have the callbacks like force awakens does“. Actually it does in some scenes. The most obvious one being Gaff’s cameo, and his origami figure. It’s used as foreshadowing (I think) for the wooden horse figure. There was a very subtle reference to the book: when Deckard’s dog shows up in silhouette, I suspected that it was, for a few seconds, meant to resemble a sheep. Deckard in the book was desperate to own a real one. Although they are dark and hard to see, Tyrell’s pyramids are shown before Wallace’s much larger company appears. And then there are the Pan Am and Atari neon advertisements from the original. I don’t see how that is much different to the Force Awakens showing the Millennium Falcon’s hologram chess game and the ball that Luke trained with.
I actually watched this movie without having seen the original Blade Runner and although i knew the bare minimum about how the universe in Blade Runner worked, i did feel pretty confused at times. That being said, it did not stop me from enjoying this movie whatsoever. There is just so much goddam talent jammed into this movie, the acting is fantastic, it looks absolutely gorgeous and i havent seen anything like it ever before or ever since, the soundtrack is awesome and even if i missed out on a lot of context on my first watch there was stil a ton of thought provoking concepts, clever dialogue to be appreciated and engaging stories to follow along with. This movie is a masterpiece.

MARCUS! Break it down man, I feel like you can bring an extremely informed perspective on the film that new viewers like myself can understand. Especially since you do an incredible job tying consistent themes from the old property to the new one, explaining how they're expanded upon in killer sequels (like your Samurai Jack review). Thanks for the great content, and my day a lil more hilarious one vid at a time B^)
Scene-by-scene... Please! Finally got to watch this movie and really liked it. Was a fan of the original and the book, and to see someone make a sequel who actually understood the original and expanded on it rather do a call-back filled remake was so refreshing!
i love that the director even managed to get the studio to make 3 additional short films to add some of the story of what happened in between 2049 and the first film. and since i had watched every single one of them in addition it made the film even more enjoyable for me, since the small things they refference made a lot of sense. funnly enough this movie gave me some of the same satifaction as when you piece togheather the lore of the dark souls games
This was a great sequel! Especially compared to other big budget science fiction movies! I saw this film at 1 am in Universal City, before opening night.. After leaving the theater, I went home and had so many question. As soon as I got back home I started reading "Do androids dream of electric sheep?" again. Re reading the book captivated me so much! And as a production sound guy working in LA! I'm so happy that movies like this still get made. Inspiring!
this video is the blade runner of movie reviews. Fantastic, and you're right, hollywood does not make movies like this, but DENIS VILLENEUVE does. He's such a fantastic director
2049 is more plot driven and less of a mood piece. But while I really enjoyed it I disagree with the video, the original has an incredible amount of ideas and emotion in it too. It isn't one note at all.
I doubt OP actually understood the original. While the visuals are a large part of the appeal of it, philosophy is another huge aspect of it. It posits man by creating replicants, fully self-aware beings, aspiring to godhood. It confronts the viewer with the question of whether replicants by virtue of their self-awareness should be afforded human dignity and right-of-life. And perhaps most importantly of all, it contrasts Deckard, a human, who kills other self-aware beings with Roy, a replicant, who despite having ample reason to kill Deckard decides to save his life even as he's dying. It is by virtue of these rich themes and their reinforcement by the aesthetics that Blade Runner was such an incredible film, and continuous to be admired today, despite its simplistic plot. The new film is in many ways the opposite. There is no longer any philosophical musings on what replicants mean to the concept of humanity (except if you count the plot point of a replicant having had a child, which I don't because the film is always in a hurry to move on with the plot whenever it comes up, never stopping to elaborate). Instead it's a plot twist thriller more than a noir, and is fine enough at what it does. But in terms of greatness I think it's far behind the original.
Funny enough: when saw you "in the box" my first thought was: "Sith lord Marcus" and then you said about the upcoming SW video. Also: thank you for a recommendation. Will do my best to watch both parts over this long weekend. Also-also: Thank you for answering the age old movie question: "What's in THE BOX?!" Now we know it's your head :P
DO A SCENE BY SCENE please. I love this movie so much. Just as good as the original in my opinion, just love the way it was filmed/colors and framing. Good stuff. Love your content! A favorite you are, thank you!
It’s The Godfather Part II of the sci-fi genre. Stands on its own, but perfectly compliments the original. One of my favorite movies of all time. PS watch it on shrooms. Unreal experience.

This movie doesn’t have the callbacks like force awakens does“.
2+ years later and the movie’s soundtrack playing in the background of your video just hits me hard. This movie was so damn amazing
I hadn't seen the original movie when I watched Bladerunner 2049, and it still became one of my favorite movies of all time instantly.
Same here I didn't watch the first movie before watching this one. And I agree with you.
This movie is an absolute Masterpiece it hands down the best movie I've ever seen.
Officer KD6-3.7 YES!! Greatest film ever made!!
Total Freedom Living I agree with you. It’s been about 2 years since this movie came out and I have yet to see anything like or even remotely close to it. Absolutely one best movies off all time and Instant classic
These two movies are probably two of the best yet
I was suddenly reminded I haven't rewatched this one yet, and it's easily one of my fave movies from the last decade or so. Time to remedy that. Nice vid. :)
Pleased do a full video on this movie. I love your reviews, and this movie is definitely worth it.
Get well soon!
In my opinion it's a modern masterpiece, one of very few. Trust in Denis Villeneuve!
I have really enjoyed so many of your videos - but this really helps me realize you get it all. My girlfriend, who doesn't normally like thoughtful films that I enjoy loved this film.
Out of all the other film critic I have watched so far, I so happened to agree just about most of the points you made about this movie, spot on!!!
Hell yeah a scene by scene would be great
bruh you congested?
Check this out bruh: 6:45
Please do the full breakdown this movie is amazing and u really hit the nail on the head with all ur points in this vid. Id love to see what u can go into with spoilers
As soon as Sea Wall started playing in the background I got chills. I love the score for this film
This is the celluloid equivalent of a Dali painting. A true masterpiece
Blade Runner 2049 is easily the best looking film I've seen next to Mad Max Fury Road in the last decade or more. Add the really absorbing story and it's one of the best films I've seen ever.
+1 for scene-by-scene breakdown of BR 2049. Hope you've gotten better from your sickness!
Good videos man, remember your channel at like 18k. Keep it up.
Honestly I think 2049 will be financially successful in the long run similar to the original. It without a doubt is cult classic material.
“Full sequel - a real sequel” -
That is it!Thank you.
This movie was so masterful I adored it, couldn’t stop thinking about it after viewing
Now for the Dune movie I am hyped. Real substantial hype
scene by scene might be a bit extreme, but I wouldn't mind seeing a video essay of this movie from you m' dude
Dude, your sound edits with the score are really good. New sub xD
I keep coming back to this movie every year. Just watched it today,! Masterpiece
2049 is dang near in my top 10 favorite movies haha I love it
liked it more than the original, and i've seen Scott's version like 4 times.
You are on point with this one. Well done!
Scene-by-scene... Please! Finally got to watch this movie and really liked it. Was a fan of the original and the book, and to see someone make a sequel who actually understood the original and expanded on it rather do a call-back filled remake was so refreshing!
I have a new respect for the two blade runners.
Marcus, it's almost been two years, when's that scene by scene, huh!?
Both of these movies are some of my favorite movies ever.
To me it's more than a movie, it's an experience, and atmosphere you enter.
I agree completely, both masterpieces.
i love that the director even managed to get the studio to make 3 additional short films to add some of the story of what happened in between 2049 and the first film. and since i had watched every single one of them in addition it made the film even more enjoyable for me, since the small things they refference made a lot of sense. funnly enough this movie gave me some of the same satifaction as when you piece togheather the lore of the dark souls games
2049 is a hard movie. Not only is it slow and three hours long, but its hard to understand if you havent seen the first one
Piroclanidis I feel you unnderstand it enough. You just need a basic explanation of what Blade Runner is about.
Not really. Unless you want to watch the You Tube shorts that give a background build up that 2049 keeps referencing...
But fuck is it worth it!!
It's probably gonna be better than Justice League
Not really that hard to understand
Blade runner 2049= best movie of 2017 and best sequel ever made
jonathan sparks YES!!
Also... just wanna say...
Love the channel, bro.
Subscribed.
Keep up the good work, cousin.
Inspiring!
Do it. Extended review of Bladerunner 2049!
this video is the blade runner of movie reviews. Fantastic, and you're right, hollywood does not make movies like this, but DENIS VILLENEUVE does. He's such a fantastic director
I know it's almost year after you put out this video, but a scene-by-scene would be excellent! You should definitely do it.
Hell yeah man, break it down. I like your perspective on things. Subscribed.
Can you talk about avatar the last air bender and/or legend of Korra
do a scene by scene!
SO glad I found this channel.
A scene by scene would be great! This is easily one of my favourite movies in a long time
I disagree on something, you don't really need to watch the first one, this movie stands on it's own so well that it can do that
2049 is more plot driven and less of a mood piece.
Dude was clearly sick recording this lol, can tell in his voice
This is why i I love your videos
Please do scene by scene
You’re right is not fury road it’s better.
Unreal experience.
drmuffin1080 YES!! Love watching it after smoking a bowl. Such a perfect film.
This is probably the closest thing to a cinematic masterpiece that Hollywood has ever produced.
I just saw this movie for the fourth time like a month ago, and now I desperately need to go watch it again.
Two years later and I'm still thinking about this movie.
