Planet Yar, in the Centauri system is a great analogy for Tatooine … located near a Japanese influenced ‘Cyberpunk’ planet and off the beaten path enough for the casual griefers to leave me alone. That’s where I intend to build a desert hovel and work as a salvage/scrapper or run freight in my Freelancer Max for minimal earnings, and live a quiet life in the Star Citizen ‘verse. Ace PvP pilots or ambitious empire builders can amass a fortune and a vast fleet, but I want nothing more than to be a nobody in a dangerous interplanetary future.
Would love to have a settlement already built that I could just add my little habitation to the edge of. Something with a basic spaceport where I keep my Freelancer and can get fuel, and that has some rudimentary defences … basically Mos Eisely. A little Mule to load cargo and a hover bike for whenever I need to get to Tosche Station for some power converters. I’m thinking planet Yar in the Centauri system or Vosca in Elysium … a quiet settlement on a desert planet where the griefers will not bother me.
My problem with this ship is, Options. When the Pioneer was first released it was a very limited ship like 7 or 8 hundred were sold, Which made this a very Lucrative purchase. But with the success of Star Citizen even if they sell 50 thousand of them it wont come close to meeting the needs for base building. Options are coming, My concern is, will this ship become obsolete with better building options? cargo drops, Npcs, or whatever SC can think up. We wont have the answers for several years, but it is something to think about before plopping down a huge chunk of cash.
That's the thing I dislike about people like you, you think that orgs have to be self sufficient...which is absurd. You focus on a niche, and then offer your services to others. How difficult is that to grasp?
I think that the Pioneer will effectively become the user interface for the full functionality of the CIG tool they have been building in house for base construction for Pyro etc. I imagine as this functionality gets close to coming online, demand for Pioneer ships will skyrocket from orgs wanting to build their own bases
Paint skin needs to be something industrial … maybe grey/red/yellow (hazardous signage) with heavy wear and scratches, to emphasise the hard use and harsh environments in which it’s been operating.
All CIG said so far, have been that it can build outpost(s), they never said anything about solar panels, mining, or refinerys. However they did say they will look into the possibility of expand on what the Pioneer will be able to build, but for now its only stated to build outposts. Its still sold as a limited ship. No clue how many that will be when the ship will actually work ingame, but im sure that there will be plenty to do for any Pioneer owner if CIG actually deliver on the amount of systems they talked about before. (and yes I did pick a Pioneer up at the concept sale, and have it in my buyback, until I know more about the ship).
awesome work, love that you outline the large uncertainty ahead for the ship and the entire game loop yet celebrate the narrative we have been presented so far. its a ship that talks to a dream many of us have .. building homes and bases in the universe :) one of my favorite ship ideas.
I cant wait to use my pioneer. But i wonder how it finds it way in the economic field. They are rare (i believe currently only 4000-5000 pioneers exist)
Ive a Galaxy and that will be enough for BB, and of course there will be even more ships that are capable, but base building will be more costly than owning a Kraken, would be to much of an anchor for me.
from what I understand, you will have to design your "colony" from hundreds of "plug and play" buildings and parts - then the Pioneer will build it as you buy/collect and then supply the raw materials. Very, very cool.
The idea of base building is of interest to me, but I am hoping they will develop base defenses such as auto turrets to reduce offline raiding I have been in enough large scale survival games that I know all too well how many children (including those well past 18yo) are out there who will spawn camp, or off line raid, or or any number of cheaty/cowardly tactics to be able to freely attack with out fear of losses. I would LOVE to build a small space port, a seedy bar, some trade, repair, and refueling facilities, hang a sign that says "no pirates allowed" but fail to notice smuggling operations, exchange of questionable goods. A legitimate place my friends and I can call home, where I can hanger a caterpillar or similar someplace that does not look like it has hourly maid service. (And if I could afford a pioneer or similar, offer base building services to others, though I personally have greater interest in exploration once that ability is fully realized. (I would still need a base of operation to come home to) (I am VERY disappointed in the size reduction I have seen reported in the asteroid hanger as it was nearly perfect in its earlier stages of development))
I won't be owning one of these but understanding it will be important to everyone hoping to hire one to build their outpost one day. It's huge! I love the industrial look.
Drake version: big cargo ship with construction modules inside, but another vehicle has to be used to move them around to each individual building to build.
Can't wait to put my Pioneer to work on behalf of my main org. We have visions of building entire towns with it not just a few buildings. Our very own home community.
A year later and we are not any closer. As I've said in another post, I hope my kid's kids will enjoy the feature. Falling out the bottom of my Constellation when logging back in and not being able to get back in the ship.... now THAT feature is already available today. Woohoo progress!
Colonization will start the process that players can build the universe naturally like how real humans would do. It opens so much possibilities and immersion. I can’t wait to see small outpost build up and small groups making trading with each other or even big Organisations which can bilden while cities on planets, moons and asteroids.
You asked at the end about what if two parties fight over a claim, the thing is once you place the marker you have to have a data runner run the info back to a designated UEE place ie like a big city. But its first come first serve like the battle would be a race to register the plot its totally possible to snake a spot out from under someones nose, its why data runners are fast. I have a pioneer and i was there for its concept launch. Probably only reason i know. I think it was a citcon video of Chris Roberts if you wanted to look it up.
okay.. lets count. SC pre production started in 2010. development in 2012. Now we have 2023. We have 1 solar system. Why are you trying to do everything? Do you have an org? Even if you have an org, trying to be self sufficient is absurd, focus on a niche that you rally behind, and hire people to fill in the spots you're lacking in. You are NOT going to do well trying to do combat AND logistics, you just aren't.
@@tevarinvagabond1192 ofcourse not. but i do have the money to spend. and if i can provide the (bigger)ships for others to play with me i am happy to provide it.
The Pioneer will be vital to exploration in toxic, violent and desolate places. Able to offer storage, healing, repair, other alternative ways to make credit over time. Set ups in other dangerous zones will be vital to remain in systems with large storage and good medical and repair facilities. Where large ships become cumbersome and area's become dangerous for large ships and not strike teams looking for repair and resources Pioneer will be vital. The reason why is how many large ships would you want to protect while overwhelmed.
Great to see some videos and people focused on this side of the game and the Pioneer. Decided to pick one up at IAE this year, I figure it’ll be here by 2026 or thereabouts, so not as long to wait as the initial concept pledgers out there!
How difficult was it to pick up? Did you have to wait for multiple waves? I understand one cannot CCU to the Pioneer. Does it come with LTI? Sorry for all the questions, but I am seriously considering this myself

I just wonder if the pioneer is base build only or if it can build outposts and houses. Right now its just this squarey base thingys. I realy hope they will extend it so we can build homes with it.

The thing that deterred me from buying the pioneer was a few things, the loaners don’t equal to even half the price of the ship for one thing unless they add more loaners as time goes on, then as of late they have talks about death of a spaceman and complete full loot pvp and I just can’t see many solo players or small group of players making a home / base unless you can defend it constantly as it can be raided while offline and loose everything you have inside your base.
