  • Which is best ? Testing the MSR Pocket Rocket2 , SOTO Amicus, Soto Windmaster, MSR Microrocket, Warrior field stove and a cheapo chinese amazon crappo.
    I test these popular stoves with 500ml / 17.6 oz of (same temperature) water brought to boil in a MSR Titan kettle - first with zero wind then a fan on full constant speed.
    I record the time taken to reach first part of boil and also the gas used and a take brief look at each stove.
    MSR Pocket Rocket 2
    £26
    73g / 2.6oz
    Boil time 2m.18s used 11g / 0.38 oz of gas

    Fun fact: The 360-degree Furno (the first cheap Chinese stove you've tested) has a pretty good review on Australia's outdoor shop. It is only 59AUD, and it comes with a pot set, stove, and canister stand. Most importantly, it just works. What a bargain. I was also curious about what Chinese brand it is since I have never heard of this "360 degree" thing in my life. So I did a bit of searching on Taobao(Aliexpress), and I realized this 360 Degree Furno stove is the exact same as a Chinese brand called "Bulin." The Bulin is an outdoor stove brand that has existed for many years(at least more than two decades). It has many good reviews from those 2000-2010s hikers and overlanders. But their product design didn't look so great compared to brands from Japan and the US.

    I'm happy with my Amicus, and I chose it mostly on style, design and small size. I like that you can't lose the pot supports like in the Windmaster. Time will tell if it is built to last.

      They r notuch different on fuel efficiency with windmaster or similar stoves?

    Hello Rob I think the windmaster is the best when it come to durability and wind resistance.. Pocket Rocket 2 in my long term used it wobbles so before using it i always check and tighten the Philips screw in the neck of the stove , the bottom thread is aluminum no brass insert so in time the thread of the pocket rocket2 will loosen . no regulator so the fuel will spotter specially in real world condition.. With brass insert, regulator and igniter I think Sotto Windmaster is a way better..
    I have both of that stoves.
    Thank you Rob

      @darwinmejia3692 3 года назад

      I mean the flame will "sputter" because MSR pocket rocket 2 has no regulator.

    • @darwinmejia3692
      @darwinmejia3692 3 года назад +5

      And the windmaster has a safety features.. The flame control knob must
      be turned at least 1-1.5 turns
      in order to release the gas.
      Pocket rocket2 does not have a safety feature, a little turn on the control knob the gas will leak immediately ..
      If you love MSR brand I suggest the pocket rocket deluxe is better. I also owned a Pocket Rocket Deluxe .

    I got one of the cheap Chinese stove 5 years ago and it is still going strong. I now use it all the time for solo camps and day hikes.
    For £3 I would highly recommend it.

    When considering my first stove, I ended up going with the Pocket Rocket 2 for the same reasons you shared here. In the end, the differences are minute and its a time proven design that can be counted on reliably.
    Getting one for $28/shipped during the recent Black Friday sales here in the U.S. (just $10 more than the cheapie knock-offs) made it a no-brainer purchase. Thanks for the experienced based review.

    Rob, probably the most comprehensive tests I have seen on stoves. I have a lot of MSR gear, including 5 stoves, and I agree they are consistently good, reliable and robust. I quite liked the soto stove, but I can see difficulties getting it together with really cold hands. Good vid Rob 👍👍👍

    SOTO Windmaster is my favourite. The micro regulator, low noise, build quality and good wind resistance make all the difference and compensate for the annoying height. You know you're designing good stoves when MSR steal your design!

    I personally think the windmaster is far better on a real world usage. The rocket 2 has a defined hot spot in the pot compaired to the windmaster. Try cooking bacon or eggs in a frying pan.. the windmaster is far ore controlable. Gas useage is better on the windmaster in buffeting winds in the Scottish hills to the point my mates rocket 2 kept getting blown out. My other old faithful is the Primus multifuel which is last century and still works perfect. Interesting test though.

    This is one seriously well prepared review, Rob. Good to watch and so informative. I bought a cheapo one recently for a trip and wanted one with a feed pipe instead of a direct gas canister fix to keep the height down. I'd say height/stability is are important factors in choice, not just the weight and gas use. I like my old Trangia setup with the gas conversion although no idea about burn times. Fantastic in the wind though! But I agree with your overall comments at the end. Thanks for sharing, Cheers, W :)

    Mate, you made a video that could of been sooooo boring actually interesting 😁 Especially for me as I hate gas burners, but I found it really entertaining, a good test for some newbies etc, at some point in my life I will have to get a gas guzzler so I will refer back to this vid, but I rate MSR gear so would probably spend the extra and get the MSR pocket rocket 2. Cheers. Lee

    I enjoyed your review. The one thing that I have heard about the SOTO Windmaster, is that it does a better job of regulating the gas as the gas canister gets closer to empty. I am planning on buying a new stove soon and was wondering if you have heard or experienced this?

    Interesting to see how would have compared with Jetboil.
    They tend to use half the fuel so tend to win the weight argument with fuel for 5+ days.

    I reckon your Chinese cheapie might be a '360 Degrees' - it shares some connector and gas flow control components (as well as the orange tub). I bought a '360 Degrees Furno' pots & burner pack for under $50AU....(nice cup & boiling pot🙂) it's got a better burner on top and no 'El Cheapo' sparker. It's got the water boiling even before I've got the dry soup sorted in the cup🙂. I'm a fan of the lower standing units, chiefly because it lowers the centre of gravity & lessens the chance of your food/water being knocked over or tipping when if wind suddenly picks up.

    • @WildCamper
      @WildCamper  3 года назад +1

      Hi Billy, sounds about right on the el crappo 👍 fair point on the low burners , the tall ones can be a bit wobbly, I use those plastic clip on feet . They sort out the wobble nicely 👍👍👍

    • @billyaitken1713
      @billyaitken1713 3 года назад +1

      Rob, ironically, my 360 Degree Furno kit also came with a pot scourer & a collapsible, 3-arm stand that clips to the base of the standard gas. Like you said, the clip on bases add next level stability. The last burner I had was a 'Camping Gaz' one..............sooooooo 20th century!!! 😕🤣.

    • @WildCamper
      @WildCamper  3 года назад +1

      @@billyaitken1713 in all fairness I thought it was pretty good for £5 👍

    • @billyaitken1713
      @billyaitken1713 3 года назад +1

      At $5 you can't really grumble, but the 'theatre curtain' deployment of the stove legs and the comical spark unit are kicked to the kerb if you get the Furno- it has that 3 legged thingy on top the burner head to stop breeze flameout🔥👍and the stove legs fold along it's axis like tipi poles. Only got it because the Jetboil etc was far too pricey. $5, that's not even a pint of Greene King IPA!!!!
