"Our Society Is COMPLETELY Mad!" - Mike Graham On "Woke" UK Councils Knocking Down Gravestones

  • Families have hit out at a council in the UK that deliberately knocked over hundreds of gravestones at three cemeteries without warning, claiming the memorials were a health and safety risk.
Residents visiting the graves of their loved ones at Heaton cemetery discovered that the headstones, laid flat on the grass, had been taken down by Newcastle City Council.
The council argued that notices had been in place at the cemeteries before the work took place but a number of people said they were not contacted and that to have the stones restored would cost £250.
Mike Graham blasts "woke" councils across the UK doing this.
Mike: "It's symptomatic to me of where this society of ours has gone completely mad!"
Madeline: "The inhumanity, callousness of computer-says-no council."

I've just paid for a headstone costing over £1.5k, including £350 to the council for putting it there, that's on top of the fees for the plot. What this council is doing is wanton vandalism and absolutely disrespectful to the families. Its just inexcusable.😡

Money making enterprise on top of the blatant disrespect. And with the cost of living at the moment - this actually makes me feel sick that some group of bureaucrats, with nothing useful to do, have taken this action. If I went to the cemetery to lay flowers for my husband & my mother-in-law & found the headstones overturned I’m not sure of my reaction. It would certainly NOT be a happy one.

In 50 years it has become an invasive weed to the point of absurdity. The obsession with safety has spread its tentacles into every aspect of life. It really is time it was repealed along with "no win no fee" lawsuits and most of the lunatic Regulations made under it

So I would suggest the council now goes and rectifies these pushed over gravestones and puts everything back as it was!!!

My local council - Haringey - did precisely the same to a small section of wall outside my home. A couple of bricks became dislodged after a car 'nudged' a corner. Shortly after, I returned home to find the wall pushed over completely. A few weeks later, I received a communication to say it was done under H&S guidelines! But the icing on the cake was they included a 'flyer' for a local builder that would rebuild the section, at my expense!!!

Health & Safety has had "mission creep" for the last 25 years and will continue its blatant stupidity until some common sense is applies.
This will of course never happen.
I had a H&S inspector start to issue a "immediate emergency shutdown notice" for a factory for non-compliant guarding on machinery.
When I informed her any shutdown would cost the H&S £50k immediately ( as I would sue them) and costs of £35k a day thereafter would accrue, she returned to her car, made a phone call and then left without showing her face or signing the order.
The guarding on the machinery was "fully compliant" - the H&S inspector was just plain wrong (a little knowledge is a dangerous thing).

What has this story got to do with being woke? This is more to do with councilors who probably don't thoroughly understand Health and Safety legislation or how to plan work than so called wokeness. I actually worked for twenty years for a company that undertook statutory inspections required by various regulations encompassed by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. We recieved regular training and had to undergo frequent testing of our knowledge on these matters. It was amazing how many managers and officials in various organisations had little or no knowledge of the actual requirements of the relevant regulations, this would often result in needless actions being undertaken or, conversely, no action being taken to rectify a potentially dangerous situation at all.
In the incident as reported I wouldn't be surprised if the council members didn't have any real idea of what these inspections involved, but as long as they were carried out they could just tick the relevant box. Probably never even thought that this work might actually be distressing to the surviving relatives of the deceased and that it might be a good idea to contact them first to explain that it might be necessary to reposition the headstone. Basically bad planning and ignorance.

Check gravestones while potholes in roads apart from damaging vehicles are a real danger to people riding cycles and motorcycles. Many footpaths would be a challenge to an experienced cross country walker. Think, as you struggle to walk down an urban street each house is levied around £1500 to £2500 Council Tax in addition to the occupants personal taxes. Only payable of course if you are a law abiding citizen. This is England, nobody starves.

Headstone inspections have been done for decades, a last resort is laying down the headstones. Normally the family would be contacted to get the headstone repaired, as a general rule the plot is purchased so maintenance falls to the family.
If a headstone is at risk of toppling then it should be staked where possible. From a maintenance perspective we prefer the headstones to be upright as it makes it a hell of a lot easier to cut the grass.
Looking at Gov statistics in the last 30 years 8 people have been killed by falling memorials so the likelihood is very very low.
I've had more injuries from catching those crappy solar lights with a strimmer then being hit by a headstone.

Don't pay the fine/ stand it up your self/ If safety really was a factor they could have notified every family that there "potentially" could be an issue. And that you have been "warned" to to visit the site at your own risk. There by eliminating the risk to themselves of being sued, and all the unnecessary work /cost/ and heartache. Families could then choose to investigate the "risk" and act accordingly or not. P.S who installed the stone to begin with? the council wasn't it.

The conclusion is that the entire area shall be laid flat until foam rubber facsimiles are available to replace the hard and heavy stones.
