"Our Society Is COMPLETELY Mad!" - Mike Graham On "Woke" UK Councils Knocking Down Gravestones

- Families have hit out at a council in the UK that deliberately knocked over hundreds of gravestones at three cemeteries without warning, claiming the memorials were a health and safety risk.
Residents visiting the graves of their loved ones at Heaton cemetery discovered that the headstones, laid flat on the grass, had been taken down by Newcastle City Council.
The council argued that notices had been in place at the cemeteries before the work took place but a number of people said they were not contacted and that to have the stones restored would cost £250.
Mike Graham blasts "woke" councils across the UK doing this.
Mike: "It's symptomatic to me of where this society of ours has gone completely mad!"
Madeline: "The inhumanity, callousness of computer-says-no council."

I've just paid for a headstone costing over £1.5k, including £350 to the council for putting it there, that's on top of the fees for the plot. What this council is doing is wanton vandalism and absolutely disrespectful to the families. Its just inexcusable.😡
And people wonder why councils are going bankrupt!
Quite the reverse. Councils can charge we peasants for the repair of the damage the councils caused in the first place. Another nice little earner.
That's why they're doing it. Easy money earner.
GO Woke.....We all know what happens...
The biggest victim of wokeness is morality
Because Hitler would have had less morals if he was woke?
Our councils have NO shame and to charge you to put it back up is a disgrace it's hard enough going to visit a grave of a loved one who you love and miss but to find that when you get there is unforgivable 😡
My local council did this a few years ago but they soon back pedalled when everyone refused to pay to have their headstones reinstated upright
After a Mexican standoff the council quietly completed the “ necessary remedial work “ at no charge
Utter disgusting and disrespectful to the dead and there families.utter shameful
Money making enterprise on top of the blatant disrespect. And with the cost of living at the moment - this actually makes me feel sick that some group of bureaucrats, with nothing useful to do, have taken this action. If I went to the cemetery to lay flowers for my husband & my mother-in-law & found the headstones overturned I’m not sure of my reaction. It would certainly NOT be a happy one.
councilors husband probably owns company that installs gravestones and he was running short of business
If you look at the makeup of councils these days, it’s more likely to be a councillor’s partner.
Council's are going broke up and down the country it's all about money
Because of them putting ppl & mainly Immigrants in "temporary accomodation" - bc the Tories didn't think "Housing" was a priority - at all.
& are letting thousands & thousands of Middle Easterners in ad nauseum - & we don't hv anywhere to put our own Homeless nevermind these jokers many of which are either Terrorists or Terrotist Sympathisers. A new Government that isn't any of the usual Parties + Mass Deportations are the only next steps.
Time for a General Election. Toute de suite.🙏🏻💜🇬🇧💜🌏💜
That was my first thought.
How many accidents and fatalities have been recorded by unsafe headstones in the past 1000 years?
these headstones can just jump out on you when you're not looking, the big ones are very hard to fight off
Watch out for those angels! And the cherubs can be pretty hardcore I’ve heard😂
Not many. Mike has never seen a gravestone topple, neither have most people.
These local authorities poke their noses into our lives far too much. The only answer is mass non-payment of council tax. First step is we all cancel our direct debits and pay only on reminder. Then, is they keep up their attacks on the public, dont pay at all
Sue them for desecration
Local councils making money out of thin air - an absolute disgrace. Obviously their working budget isn't good enough! 👺
But, councils can't fix the millions of dangerous potholes gracing our roads🙃
I remember when this sort of behavior was called vandalism.
The Health and Safety at Work etc..Act 1974 was introduced to make safety at work the responsibility of employees as well as employers as the factories acts and shops acts had previously laid it all on the employer.
In 50 years it has become an invasive weed to the point of absurdity. The obsession with safety has spread its tentacles into every aspect of life. It really is time it was repealed along with "no win no fee" lawsuits and most of the lunatic Regulations made under it
Nothing wrong with the HASWA 1974 in principle- Its how its been applied in recent years. There seems to be NO common sense with it now or sense of "reasonableness" , thats the difference.
@@webbo9798 I used to enforce it. There's plenty wrong with it and with a lot of the Regulations made under it but the biggest problem is the regulations that don't actually exist and jobsworths quote as "it's health and safety guv.".
That coupled with greedy people bringing cases with no merit through "no win no fee' solicitors has ruined carnivals and community events who can't get public liability insurance because every drunk dickhead who trips over thinks he can make a bob or two.
Don't you actually purchase the grave plot????? If so then this isn't the council's property. I would be filing a criminal damage report to the police of vandalism of my loved ones grave and be investigating the council who did this. So I would suggest the council now goes and rectifies these pushed over gravestones and puts everything back as it was!!!
All the people affected should get together and take the council to court for vandalism and criminal damage.
The problem with that is even if they won the payment would only come out of people taxes, which would either lead to highers taxes or even worse services.
Good point.@@aaronbeat1136
My local council - Haringey - did precisely the same to a small section of wall outside my home. A couple of bricks became dislodged after a car 'nudged' a corner. Shortly after, I returned home to find the wall pushed over completely. A few weeks later, I received a communication to say it was done under H&S guidelines! But the icing on the cake was they included a 'flyer' for a local builder that would rebuild the section, at my expense!!!
Its criminal damage. Who does the £250 go to? Would it be the council 🤔
I love to take a look at the council , I bet I wouldn't be surprised.
Health & Safety has had "mission creep" for the last 25 years and will continue its blatant stupidity until some common sense is applies.
This will of course never happen.
I had a H&S inspector start to issue a "immediate emergency shutdown notice" for a factory for non-compliant guarding on machinery.
When I informed her any shutdown would cost the H&S £50k immediately ( as I would sue them) and costs of £35k a day thereafter would accrue, she returned to her car, made a phone call and then left without showing her face or signing the order.
The guarding on the machinery was "fully compliant" - the H&S inspector was just plain wrong (a little knowledge is a dangerous thing).
I notice you said the H&S inspector was a her!!! 🤔Say no more🧐🤨🙄😝🤪🤭
Unbelievable stupidity I sometimes think I’m going mad with what is happening in England now , the whole world seems to be going mad 🙄🤦♂️😵💫
This has been happening in east Yorkshire for a while... They have now opened up the cemetery after all these years to allow cars down, folk genuinely are treating it like a picnic area walking their dogs. The Very Sad thing i had to witness this Sunday was a man walk with a dog on a lead whilst it peed on headstones, including one of a child. My mind boggles what goes in 2023 😢
If the council is telling the people who are effected by them knocking over headstones that to have them put upright again at a cost of 250 quid, surely that is extortion.
This has been going on for years… my great-grandparents grave was flagged as ‘unsafe’ and slapped with a yellow sticker and that was over 15 years ago. Their kids had to fork out over £1000 between them to make it safe.
Hundreds of years these Headstones have stood in some Cemeteries through war and weather good and bad yet I don’t remember hearing anyone being injured or killed by a Headstone. Too much interference from busybodies in everything now.
Woke Labour Council i believe!
Reform would not let this happen
It happened to my grandparents and mothers grave in Blackhall cemetery County Durham, laid the headstone face down so it was all mucky when my son and daughter lifted it on our return with water to clean it and quick set cement to reinstall it.
You need to see "who" are the members of these councils.
They've been doing that in churches for years now. Even to commonwealth war graves. One of our local vicars doesn't even bother to lay them face up. Preferring instead to lay them face flat. It's no so much a matter of health and safety but the grubby world of where there's blame claim lawyers. A total lack of respect and compassion for bereaved families.
Surely by pushing over headstones the council are just creating another hazard - i.e. a trip hazard in the grass for someone to fall over. Can’t make it easy for the grass cutters to mow around either. Madness!
I'm feeling highly stressed from absolutely mental council policy therefore in the interests of health and safety council should be banned
Looking for things to keep busy rather than doing what they paid to do. Disgraceful
Unbelievable.
Vote those councillors out…simple! Councils have now become a law unto themselves, since covid it’s just about impossible to contact your council, almost all the staff are supposedly working from home( yeah right!) and any reply to an email will be replied with an automated response. No longer fit for purpose, a bit like most of our current institutions!
It's been happening for years, 6 years ago, they pushed over my grandparents' headstone. It had grass growing over it. I had to pay the stone masons to put a ground anchor in and replace the headstone.
And they pay someone to do this.
That happened to my mum and dads grave, we paid £150 to fix it back in. This was about ten years ago
How about this one, in Bradford mosques are built on disused graveyards.
What possible danger and to whom could be posed by a headstone?!! It’s pure vandalism and council need to be responsible.
If the Council placed them there and did a botched job, shouldn't they be the ones to rectify it?All for money.
Some bean counters at the council delighted at their cunning scheme to knock over gravestones on some daft pretext and then get loved ones to hand over cash to put them back in place. What a scam.
People need to take the law into their own hands when it comes to things like this. If i end up committing a criminal offence against some of those jobworths, then so be it, im happy to live with myself, can they?
Wow what a vile country this is becoming 😱
They’ve been doing that in Scotland for years
Our local cemetery is quite old and a lot of the headstones are starting to lean to the point where there are many now toppled over. The issue with the council is getting sued if there's an injury or even a death. This wouldn't happen if the cemetery was well maintained, but its a bit neglected since the opened a new one a few miles away.
Sue for criminal damage
It's a money grab. Did they go to school with sadiq khan. Do people know who they are. Maybe someone should pay their dead loved ones a visit.
Do these people know how much a gravestone costs, not just for the stone itself but for the cost of putting it on the grave as well. WE pay for the plot, WE pay for the stone, WE pay for the stone to go on the plot. They can be removed if the plot is used again and a new inscription is added to the stone. This is a joke I don't know about woke.
Remember who did this when you vote for your councillors.
I bet the stones were pushed over in the hours of darkness, any decent person seeing that done would surely have challenged them.
They have been doing it in Oldham for over 15 yrs, go look at chadderton cemetery it’s heart breaking.
The presents under the council leaders christmas tree represent a serious trip hazard, so unfortunately I had to remove them all.
😂😂😂😂 that's hilarious.
This isn’t new certainly in Wales, it happened to my parents gravestone 10 years ago. One visit all was fine and a month later it was laid flat along with dozens of other headstones for health and safety. No communication or notification so fair to say I was furious.
The worst thing is that there are still many headstones laying flat today which is hugely disrespectful. The local council should be ashamed of themselves
Don't do it lay the Ashes in the country side all my kind are laid at a beautiful place by the offering tree, next to a stone circle yes we Pagans .
They did this in a local graveyard to me 15yrs ago my x wifes brothers grave was one of these the following day i took a bucket of cement and put it back up again and its still standing to this day
What has this story got to do with being woke? This is more to do with councilors who probably don't thoroughly understand Health and Safety legislation or how to plan work than so called wokeness. I actually worked for twenty years for a company that undertook statutory inspections required by various regulations encompassed by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. We recieved regular training and had to undergo frequent testing of our knowledge on these matters. It was amazing how many managers and officials in various organisations had little or no knowledge of the actual requirements of the relevant regulations, this would often result in needless actions being undertaken or, conversely, no action being taken to rectify a potentially dangerous situation at all.
In the incident as reported I wouldn't be surprised if the council members didn't have any real idea of what these inspections involved, but as long as they were carried out they could just tick the relevant box. Probably never even thought that this work might actually be distressing to the surviving relatives of the deceased and that it might be a good idea to contact them first to explain that it might be necessary to reposition the headstone. Basically bad planning and ignorance.
Scam. What depths will they sink to?
A hobbit could be killed by a falling grave stone.
I think they are knocking the headstones down so that they can be ‘fixed’ for a price… to a contractor who ‘contributes funds’ to certain council members.
Give the counselors a push and see if they fall flat. - Their idea of pushing grave stones has definitely fallen flat!
Why not name the political colour of these councils. We know for example that grooming gangs were rife in Labour councils and we covered up by Labour councilors and Social workers in Labour areas as well as Police authorities run by Labour. Call it out
No words for this despicable act of vandalism, that’s what it is. 😡😡😡😡😡
Blame the scumbag lawyers who will do anything to make money. The only reason councils are doing this is to avoid being sued if an accident occurs. This is what health and safety is all about, nothing to do with people's safety
Check gravestones while potholes in roads apart from damaging vehicles are a real danger to people riding cycles and motorcycles. Many footpaths would be a challenge to an experienced cross country walker. Think, as you struggle to walk down an urban street each house is levied around £1500 to £2500 Council Tax in addition to the occupants personal taxes. Only payable of course if you are a law abiding citizen. This is England, nobody starves.
Will the council pay for the restoration then or do we have to take them to court
Headstone inspections have been done for decades, a last resort is laying down the headstones. Normally the family would be contacted to get the headstone repaired, as a general rule the plot is purchased so maintenance falls to the family.
If a headstone is at risk of toppling then it should be staked where possible. From a maintenance perspective we prefer the headstones to be upright as it makes it a hell of a lot easier to cut the grass.
Looking at Gov statistics in the last 30 years 8 people have been killed by falling memorials so the likelihood is very very low.
I've had more injuries from catching those crappy solar lights with a strimmer then being hit by a headstone.
Don't pay the fine/ stand it up your self/ If safety really was a factor they could have notified every family that there "potentially" could be an issue. And that you have been "warned" to to visit the site at your own risk. There by eliminating the risk to themselves of being sued, and all the unnecessary work /cost/ and heartache. Families could then choose to investigate the "risk" and act accordingly or not. P.S who installed the stone to begin with? the council wasn't it.
Time to call them in. Gone way past the 'like getting your money's worth?' stage.
How is this exactly woke?
this has been going on for years
Whoever has authorised this sick joke should be arrested and charged 🤬
A Freedom of Information request should bring up the names of the Councillors who instigated/authorised this - would make an intrresting article in the local (and possibly national) press.
They should sue as obviously the work hasn’t been done correctly in the first place!
Canterbury council have been doing this for years.
A commonwealth war graves cemetery in the United Kingdom has a statue to the SSIRA in it, placed by a UK council using tax money, not one media outlet has a problem with it
I am sure Roald Dahl could make a fantasy story out of this one!
Roald Dahl was anti semetic
Someone needs to give these councils some real work to do, obviously to much time on there hands. Totally deranged behaviour!!!
This was done in Blackpool Layton cemetery a good thirty years ago
This is truly disgusting. These health and safety people are sick in the head. Pushing over gravestones is vandalism and is the epitomy of disrespect for the dead and their families. Putting stickers on the gravestones is just a further insult.
Has anyone asked the councils involved how many injuries and incidents have occurred in their grave yards?
Council Logic Department Bulletin :- The Cemetery has been designated a hazardous area following an audit of those on site, the result of which showed that most were deceased at the time of the inspection. The conclusion is that the entire area shall be laid flat until foam rubber facsimiles are available to replace the hard and heavy stones.
I'm surprised they haven't inspected the crematorium gardens, where the paths are lined with blocks similar to kerb edges with small plaques on the face. They've got to be designated "trip hazards", surely!! I'll have to pop down and check many of my family, now passed, to make sure they've not been removed!
I would not be surprised if these councils are full of muslims and insurgents 🥵
How dare they????...since when have there been accidents to do with headstones????
of course they are. theres money to be made by forcing the grieving families to ensure they are 'safe'
i think the people knocking them over are at serious risk of damage from very angry families
Counciillors trying to justify their job. It's bonkers!! It's really sick!!
My mother in law's gravestone had this done, and it cost us £300.00 to have it re-positioned.
Interesting that they have put yellow triangles on the stones.
A disgraceful thing to do, apart from anything else it makes the cemetery look like a tip.
Why don't we all stand on someone else's grave and see how long it will take for a 3 ft head stone too fall on us so we can put in a claim to the council😂🤦🤡🤡
it's a money scam
PS the plot is owned by the family, surely the councils can’t touch private property 😡😡😡
Sue the council
Outrageous
They'll want us wearing hi vis just to walk on the pavement next
courtesy of WEAK WEASELS parading a politicians and leaders ...no balls whatsoever to stop this madness
Sounds like criminal damage to me.
If they push it over, it is 'Criminal damage'
At £250 to put the stone back up this smells of another nice little earner.
Taxed from youth to the hereafter, crimminal gangs are not this mercenary.
