- A routine trip from the west coast to Calgary gets busy when weather goes below minimums on the prefered approach necessitating a switch to the ILS for the opposite runway...with a tail wind. POV video starts at top of descent ends following landing. 19 mins, 1080P, 60fps
Great video! I felt the intensity! Then your wife called "ground in sight" and then "runway in sight", ah....relief!
Thanks for taking the time to post an excellent video of your trip and a professional operation at that!
Great video. Great flying! I would love to be able to go for a ride with you in your Malibu
Great pilot. Thanks for the video!
Well done enjoyed! Keep the vids coming
Good job....
Really enjoyed this and your departure video as well. I hope you'll keep posting! I'm amazed by how quiet your intercom/microphones are, by the way. Is the Malibu that quiet in the cabin, or is the noise canceling mic on the DC's just fantastic?
The Malibu is quite...but not that quiet! When I have the GoPro wired into the headset's phone jack to pick up our cabin and ATC chatter it cuts out the camera's built-in mic so you hear no engine noise. More sophisticated videographers use additional camera(s) one of which picks up ambient sounds and then the two sounds streams are over laid. Other than the absence of engine "white noise" yes, the intercom and ATC quality are as good as you hear on the vid.
Thanks for the reply! I understand that you're using the intercom connection, but on most RUclips aviation videos, I hear some amount of engine noise getting into the microphone when the pilot's mic is open. You sound like you could be sitting in your living room!
You can use an audio recorder to record the intercom and comms, and the gopro to capture the normal noise. Using a clapper board you can synchronize the two tracks together
Excellent video! Did you teach your wife the basics of using the radio, basic flying and landing so that in case you get incapacitated she could still bring the aircraft to the ground more or less safely?
My wife has self taught thru observation and bites off what she feels comfortable with...that would NOT include radio work or handling the controls. Not exactly a regular two crew SOP but I'm happy that she is engaged in the flight in a way that she is comfortable with, adds to our safety and reduces my work load. The important thing is that we are confident with each other, our roles are established and we do it the same way every time.
What's the square thing on your windshield? Like your videos :) Thanks!
Casey, Its a de-ice plate....an electrically heated overlay that sits on the outside of the window. We use it to keep an area of the window clear for landing in the event that icing conditions persist right down to the ground. Later versions of this aircraft have the heating elements built in to the windshield, which is much nicer to look through.
No no no! You're supposed to answer a question like that with something like "...that is the head up display for the Sidewinder heat seeking missile lock up system" or something cool like that. Same thing if someone ask "what is that red button?" You tell them it's the launch button for the Hellfire missile or the co-pilot ejection seat or something awesome! LOL you got to learn how to spice up the comment section!
Your radio work is a 9/10. I would give you 11/10 (and you can meet that) if you stop saying "to" and "for" in your altitude clearances. Proper response is "climbing 6000" not "climbing TO six thousand" I call that the To-Two-too-tu-tu" Sounds like a small point but "descending to one thousand" has two meanings. ATC will never say "climb to 3000" and if they do - you could be cleared up to 23,000 or not.
I know that is picky, but you look like someone striving for perfection... accept as a well intended feedback and compliment. I searched and searched and found nothing else - great job - especially like the CRM with the right seater. Is she for hire?

James Ryzlot I read your comment and then a few days later saw this ruclips.net/video/Rg90PF4mWJs/видео.html At 5:52 Controller PIC says 4 thousand for 5 thousand. (Canadian as well. Maybe it is okay up there, eh?) Good job, Martin. Enjoy your videos. Keep them coming. Informative as well.
YES! this is one of my biggest pet peeves. Sadly 95% of pilots do this and it drives me nuts.
