Setting up a still life and draw objects from life will be difficult at first but as time passes you will start to see your skills increase and improve significantly. These still lifes don't have to be complex at all, they can be as simple as a cup on a kitchen table. Experiment with different lighting effects by adding a small desk lamp and shine the light from different angles. This will also help you to better understand shadows and light and how your light source can affect the object you are drawing or sketching.

Brandon, you have given me the courage to pursue drawing again! In my younger years, I would try and fail miserably. I stopped doing it because I thought I was no good at it. I’m learning that it’s something I have to practice at through your videos. I can train my brain, and not give up! I finally have the chance to do this, as I’m 62 years old, and newly retired! Thank you.

You are down to earth, you explain everything well, and I love that you reiterate in each lesson to use what you have, and not to worry about drawing exactly what you see. You suggest many ways of accomplishing what we want to achieve without feeling like we are doing it wrong. Love your style and knowledge. Thank you Brandon, I will continue to watch and put your training into practice. I am subscribed.

Exactly what I need to hear and keep hearing. It's training . . . training the mind . . . it takes many many hours. . . . training to see. My lower mind is relentless with the thoughts which make me impatient, judgmental, feeling hopeless, like a failure and unworthy. I watch these thoughts and know they are just the inner critic. It interferes with the joy of the process. It really helps when you tell us to have fun with it. That helps us keep a proper perspective and not take it so seriously.

I just found these vids and am going through them by # order and you do explain really well. That red apple in that lighting is so interesting and beautiful! I like the little setup you did put these and it gave ideas and inspiration! I have more experience in photography so I like when negative space has pleasing shapes. The shading the orange on the jar makes is also very interesting to see. I have admittingly been cheating with practicing the foundation and so far has mostly, as far as true study goes, I have been going into drawing basic shapes and put them together. I am very animal fanatic and they are extremely hard to get down so by admitting to myself that I have been cheating with this non-animal foundation I think I can get in my perspective/mass or form/proportions a better boost cause that is where I am stuck. I have gotten great at drawing and seeing basic shapes in everything though the past few months. Thank you for these videos, they are very interesting! I did get to try 1 point perspective in school as a pre teen and forgot about it, and learning 2 point was very inspiring! Same with thumbnailing, I need to start doing that!

Love the way you teach friend! So so so natural, i really feel connected. Not like when i see some video and in a minute I am like-" eh you can't do that." Watching your videos(while i know how great you are at arts) i feel like you have been exactly where i am and are just telling us how you grasped things! Thanks a lot man, really. Wouldn't have been able to draw beyond an apple if it weren't for this holistic series.

This video is 9 years old but it is still one of the best instructional video I have watched. I just got back to drawing and my 6 year old son recognizes the things I drew. 1 week ago he would have just said I drew some boxes.

@@SchaeferArt yeah I know, the teachers just give us a theme, throws it at our faces and says "here draw this" ....how will I learn anything like that?!?! But besides that I really enjoy your videos and you really helped me, thank you

Brandon, you have made drawing a relaxing pursuit. Ive been stressed out before trying not to make mistakes. I had a grumpy, not very patient instructor. No pressure here. Thanks!

I'm a beginner and loving this series. I'm going to be practicing still life for a long time till I can get it down. I have a question for anybody
Where do you start with your still life drawing? Do u start with the objects in the front? Start with the biggest objects to help with proportion? I'm having a hard time figuring out the best starting point so I would love to hear what y'all do.
    Thanks!

Kimra Does , I would suggest you start by blocking in the major shapes of the composition lightly, from largest to smallest, as your eye leads you. To help prevent any skewing of your drawing, one tip is to hold your drawing reversed up to a light, and look through the back of the paper at your drawing. This will help you catch any proportion issues very quickly!

I would suggest you to start with the things you are using in your drawing sketches like geometry box or a simple book or the stationary cause I am the beginner too
