In July 1966 my 6 person school team played Raymond's school team (he was board 1) in a 6 person match for the British Sunday Times annual school championship semi-finals (a knock-out tournament). He had just published an article on the white side of the Sicilian Dragon Yugoslav attack and got to play it against our board 1 who was the British under 16 champion. Raymond won the game quite easily. I still remember the moves. My school's chemistry teacher did not like the fact that I was traveling and missing his classes for chess and gave me a failing grade even though I was top of his class and knew all the material. That set me to go off and do math instead of chemistry at university and completely altered my life path for the better. Funny how life sometimes turns on a dime. Also, England won the world soccer cup that weekend against Germany and the atmosphere in the hotel was amazing.

I saw an elephant three years ago, and that got me addicted to cocaine. But my gymnastics teacher despised the fact that I could do backflips whilst making pancakes, so he never recommended me for the Olympic team, and now I am an astrophysicist and it completely altered my life for the better. Funny how none of these bitches ain't loyal. Also, this story made as much coherent logical sense as the rambling garbage that inspired it.

Why not just say soccer? Who the hell cares, how is it even possible to take pride in a word like that and claim some "we had it first" or "it makes more sense to us" thing?
I come from a country were we call the sports football and American football, but me adapting to calling them soccer and football when writing or talking in some international forum were there might be Americans takes zero effort and it avoids all confusion, why not do it?
Even the dumbest, refusing-to-change, fuck USA and their sports-guy still knows what sport you are talking about if you say soccer. He might not acknowledge the word and act dumb on principle, but of course he knows :)

This was pitched at a speed that was easy enough to follow, but I'm still mind-blown by how Keene was confident enough to give up his queen so early, and then win the whole game back with just his bishops and knights. Proof that knights, in particular, can jump out of nowhere and cause the most inconvenient problems ;-) I used to love my knights, and despise my opponents' ones.

2:39 : a6 also loses because of b4. There is no way for the queen to stay on the A-file to keep an eye on the a8 square. After cxb7 axb5 white can promote by capturing the rook and the queen cannot retake. If you try to play Qd8 after b4 white can simply capture the queen with c7+ either with the bishop if black blocks with the queen or with the pawn if black captures the bishop with the A-pawn.

Fascinating dynamic play by GM Keene. It certainly deserves admiration. And your good commentary made it even more luminant. Keep up the good work.
2:37 If black plays A6 white can reply with b4 black is forced to Qxb4 or QxB both loses Pxb7+ white wins. Best move is to castle Q side. black would be slightly better.

+ChessGuru Do you mean black plays 4. ... O-O-O ? But then 5. Kc4 and white can start harassing the queen and pushing the pawn. Giving back material seems more sensible.

Nxe5 is Stockfish 1st preferred move on 20 ply! The fact that Stockfish likes this move is outrageous!

Unlikely. Mato doesn't play online because his eyes hurt him when he stares at the screen for too long and he lives in Australia while Agad lives in Croatia so unlikely that they met in some chess tournament either.

At 2:51 pawn to a6 not helping the black
White next move is pawn to b4 pining the queen.
