Dylan Talks Tone Recieves Commision From Some Of These Links - Видеоклипы
I have the 100 and I can tell you it is amazing!! I have been playing for over 20 years and the PV classic 30 was my go to amp until I found the Boss Katana. I love the boss katana, and this catalyst is just a very good kind of different. I feel like the clean sound reacts more like a tube amp, especially when used with pedals. I don’t particularly like some of the higher gain options for the style of music that I play, which is mostly R&B, blues, and jazz, but I can say that about any digital amp versus a simple boss overdrive pedal. The boost function is very useful. All in all, a great lightweight loud one plug rig!!
Thanks for the demo! Prob most informative I’ve seen so far on this thing. Especially liked how you showed the power amp in feature. I either missed it or didn’t pick up on it in some other demos I’ve seen. Your walk thru was best for how my brain works lol.
Dylan, thanks for doing this video. I was already interested in this but you gave it a solid overview on the amp. I have various amps including a couple of Line 6 ones as well as a few PODs. But with the whole tube industry in Flux and the inconsistencies of tubes I have been moving towards modeling amps again. I have various amps for home, band rehearsal, gigs, and church, but they are all different. Was considering a Katana 100 but now thinking this fits my needs. Thanks again!
Thanks. Please do pedals in front & in loop. The detailed comparison of the workings of Catalyst & Katana is exactly what I'd like to see. Not just comparisons of the sounds but the how & why, as you mentioned. Already appreciate your distinction between modelling & FET & the brief look at the Catalyst software.
I like how digital amps are getting back to the basics.. Fender really nailed it with their lineup and i think every brand will go that direction for a couple of years.
I bought a Flextone ll combo in '99 and played it for a decade (still works great today). Catalyst seems like there going back to there roots. Love it
Thanks for the insightful review, Dylan. Yes, please do a review with just testing out different drive pedals in front of it! If it is anything like the Helix family, it would really shine in that scenario as well. Looking forward!
I'm sold. Great demo/review Dylan. I see this replacing two if not three of my current amps. Light, but loud for live use, power scales down for home practice, XLR and usb for home recording. And like you say, you can just plug in and play or deep dive and make micro-adjustments.
Thanks Dylan. You relieved some of my uneasiness about this amp. I've been more than a little frustrated by my attempts to use several other modeling type amps. Maybe this one for me after all. I do need to get away from depending on my tube amps. I know them and love them but I need to prepare for the future.
Great review thanks for all the details.
Line 6 says it takes pedals brilliantly. I vote for you to do a pedal demo with this amp.
I really do like the sound from the Catalyst. I was actually thinking about getting it because it sounded so much fuller than my Katana. Over the years I have downsized and I found the lighter the better and even gave up on my last tube combo amp and just today decided to gut it out and Frankenstein the parts out of the Katana 50 watt into the old 50 watt Marshall combo amp and now I am completely satisfied with the sound. Its now fuller and a lot more warm tone that was driving me crazy not having. (and its now half the weight of the tube amp)
It’s good
This is how you make a really useful review video. I already had Katana (50 ans 100W), Nextone, Quilter, DV Mark... Now I mainly use 2 Blues Cubes. I'm looking forward to trying this Catalyst when it's possible in Brazil...
Thanks Dylan . I play threw a Helix and always wondered about those amps . Very affordable and sound great . Thanks again for another one of your great videos !
Hey Dylan, great vid, +1 on wanting to see how this thing takes pedals!!! thanks man, love your content.
I can’t wait for the comparisons!!!!
Great video. Mine actually arrived yesterday. The quality of the knobs etc. is top notch. You actually kind of get 12 amps. Also - should note in future video that time based effects should be set to post.
I've got a 200 and i really like it for clean and mid gain sounds. For me, it falls over on higher gain tones as it has a harsh rattly quality - which comes down to the speakers as its not there going direct out. I found a work around by using an eq with a fairly hefty hi cut in the effects loop. Using the xx into it as a poweramp is a different story, it's fantastic. (Still with the hi cut but no cab models needed. Hope that's helpful for anyone reading this.
Nice playing on this demo Dylan 🤘
Amps sounds killer
I got two 60w and I'm super happy with them
Yes before you sell it zi would like a more detailed review of the Line 6 and maybe a second video with a variety of pedals, fuzz, overdrive, etc. I like the tone with the P90 pickup but would also love to hear it with a humbucker as well. Maybe one of your DAFs.
Great to see a review from someone who obviously understands the amp. Good job.
Using my Catalyst 100 + my HX Effects in 4CM.
I use the HX Effects for all effects (except reverb on some patches) and MIDI to control the amp model and boost in the Catalyst.
Works great, sounds great, very versatile, easy to transport.
Mostly using the Clean, Boutique, Chime and Crunch.
Cheers!
Ah I was wondering if you could do both effects and midi to the cat with the hx, great news. Thanks :-)
When you place your helix in the 4cm fx loop set switch to fx loop does this take primary fx position and cancel out the catalyst edit?
@@tubber37 Not sure if I understand your question. Catalyst Edit and HXFX are separate.
When I change HXFX patches, I send a MIDI Program Change to the Catalyst which changes the Catalyst patch; I have a button in each HXFX patch to turn the Catalyst boost on or off.
Catalyst Edit is used to edit and save Catalyst patches. I don't use any Catalyst effects except the amp boost; all other effects are from the HXFX.
All of the HXFX that are before the send will precede the Catalyst amp boost; not sure on the effects after the return in the Catalyst since I don't use them.
In the HXFX patches I have a Send/Receive that determines which effects are before the Catalyst preamp (before the send) and after the Catalyst preamp (after the return).
As an owner of a Blackstar Silverline (the 50W one), I’m really curious how the Catalyst compares. I like that the Catalyst has a proper effects loop and what seems like a more usefully diverse set of voices (especially that Boutique one), but I also appreciate the simpler approach of the Silverline’s clean-crunch-overdrive voice selection, its seemingly more capable built-in effects and EQ settings (the ISF dial in particular), and just the way it looks with its unique grey colourway (sorry Dylan 😉).
Definitely need a pedal video with this amp!
Great review of that amp man. 👍💖🔥🚀🎸
Hi Dylan, thanks for the video. Really helpful. I’d suggest three more videos: Catalyst vs Katana, detailed video for the app, Catalyst with pedals. Thank you!
Well Dylan, I’m here from the live stream regarding the impending tube apocalypse that’s coming. I’m a vintage Fender amp guy but I think it’s time to look at something else. What matters is I can still play my guitar everyday. Great review, intriguing!
Hi, an interesting video would be to run the amp through a 'set' i.e. a more real world setting and how you would use it as you switch between songs, or between rhythm and solo in a song.
Demo as a pedal platform and in a Katana comparison please. Saw a Catalyst vs Katana video and they didn't adjust anything before saying the Boss was better. Not a fair or accurate vs if you don't even try to use the amp, in my opinion. You always do a good job of explaining what your experience is, so I'd like to see your take on the subject.🤘🎸
Hi Dylan, thank you for this Video. Greetings from Germany
Nice hat, Anthony makes some real art with guitars.
I have a Katana I have never really liked ,I think I might try one of these
just to add.. you can do all the settings on the amp itself.. by pressing and holding buttons to 'open" to choice.. ex: press and hold the Boost button and rotate the boost knob will turn on and set the noisegate level... ex#2: press and hold the effects button and it will change colour to represent a different effect (green = delay, blue = modulation, purple = pitches and fuzzes..
Pretty nice video. Waiting for the comparison with the katana
I would definitely like to see how this thing responds to pedals.
As would I
Especially on the clean channel
Me three.
Hey If you want a seriously kick ass pedal platform check out Quilter amps. Small, lightweight, All solid state and powerful af !
They take pedals very well. Has an effects loop as well
Works great with pedals.
Hi Dylan, thank you for a really nice review. Let me ask you: how did find the build quality of the Catalyst 100? Thank you, Peter
I have this amp I brought it off Dave Simpson it sounds fantastic but has some issues with di out and effect management hopefully they will improve it with software updates
I have the Catalyst 60 and it's pretty rad.
The Catalyst feels like a natural next step in the standard combo guitar amp. Awesome tube-like sound, plug and play, two channels, basic effects, and various goodies like USB / XLR-out. Simple, sounds great, and lets you just play.
Compared to this, the Katana is so burdensome. It’s an overload of tweakability combined with a poor, opaque user interface. I’ve been playing my Katana for about 3 months now and I just don’t like it. I enjoy the flexibility but I don’t actually use it all that much, so it ends up getting in the way of me enjoying it.
The Catalyst seems exactly what I’m looking for. Great demo. Thanks!
A brilliant piece of kit, and I am a vintage tube hound. They are just not worth the hassle. SS is so close and only to get better.
Hey Dylan, I have a question in regards to installing extended range pickups. Im finding I am getting wobbling sounds and they are just overall hard to dial in, not sure if that means theyre too close but an explanation on that odd wobble sound would be sweet if you haven't already made a video. If you could give some tips that would be awesome, thanks again.
Good video. I love it. Seems like a decent amp. I have bunch of pedals. If I could only buy one amp, do you think Boss Nextone will be a good choice? I mostly play clean, edge of breakup. Seeking for bluesy, "70s British rock" and sometimes 80s. I don't do metal things. Thank you!
hello and thank you for your always professional video;) which amp do you prefer to buy the boss nextone or that one the catalyst?
Hi Dylan, appreciate your demo of the Catalyst. I would like to see a demo using some pedals. Thanks again. Bob.
Noted!
Hey Dylan, don’t forget the Blackstar TVP modeling amp range when you do your comparison
I find that my Vox AD60VT Valvetronix (original blue series) still gets the job done in a very similar fashion but with 16 amp models and more flexible effects and bank/preset switching. Vox really nailed it 20 (yes 20) years ago. My Helix LT is broken and it'll likely cost more to fix than a Catalyst 100. I really think the Catalyst (and all amps really) could use switch that ups the output/master volume a bit (3 - 6db) for solos. No change in tone, just more master volume.
Line 6 employee here, feel free to hit up our customer service about a repair for your LT.
Looks like this or a tone master will be my next purchase. Especially with the tube situation coming.
Nice review. Ever thought about reviewing the pod go??
Did you just compared catalyst with kemper and helix ? Im thrilled.
Hi, I am curious how the amp performs as a power cabinet using the effectsloop return. That would really help me decide if I will buy it or not. Thanks!
New subscriber here awsome video and yes do a new video with pedals, Ive been researching this new combo amp and i wanna buy it along with a PRS Tremonti SE and do lot of effects with it.
Love it if you could put pedals in the effects loop to see how well it takes
Oh yeah! I briefly tried the 100 at the local GC. Sounded fantastic! I really enjoyed the boutique amp. What I really want to know is how well will it jibe with my plethora of analog drive pedals, fuzz, etc
Catalyst takes pedals quite well
jibe
I’d like to see how mixing drive/fuzz/boost pedals works with the -dirty- amp. Any amp can take drive pedals on a pristine clean setting. I want to see if I can run my Karma Suture into a medium gain model and get it to respond like a tube amp. The katana fails this test miserably. Also id like to hear what the sag control can do. An overdriven sound with the sag off vs the same sound with it cranked.
Def. Would like to hear pedals with it.
Good review
My next amp will be a small amp with few controls and great tone. Maybe a Vibro Champ.
I've got a Spark and a Katana II. As far as DI goes they all seem to be about the same give or take a detail here and there. But the price on the Catalyst is definitely better for what they offer.
Excellent presentation
Thanks
Yes. Use the effect loop. It begs to be tested.
Would love to see how it does with the stomp boxes.
How does it compare with the Fender Mustang GTX-100, which I believe is more similar than a Katana?
Nice sounding P-90s Dyl. Gets awfully close a Leslie West vibe. I just bought $280 worth of tubes yesterday after seeing your video on EHX stopping production of tubes for obvious reasons. I’m soon going to have to get used to this new fangled technology. Ha!
Please demo the Pedals in front and through loop. Haven't seen that yet.
Looking to get one of these.
Hey Dylan, great demo and explanation on this amp. I have a tube amp and I want to add a solid state/ analog amp. I play mostly blues , Hendrix, Clapton, SRV . And some classic rock with some RHCP. Would would fit my style, this amp , the katana or the Black star debut 50 ? Thanks Dylan.
If you haven't already made your purchase, the Catalyst will cover bluesy edge of break-up perfectly... in fact, 4 of the 6 amps in it do just that. You really only have 3 amp choices.... one clean, one high gain, and 4 edge of break-up.
I have no experience with the Katana or Blackstar, but from what I've seen, they both likely do what you want just as well as the Line 6, although the Blackstar has no effects
Is the 60 watt version loud enough for a band rehearsel/live situation? 🎸😎👍🏼
Wonder what the cab size tone differences between the 60 and 100 are, even though they both incorporate a 1X12...?
Wonder why they did this...?
Does the Boost only boost INTO the preamp, or does it allow you to raise the output volume? When I program a boost function into my Helix, I both push the input of the amp block a little harder, but on the other side of the amp I raise the volume 3dB or so. Does this function on the catalyst do both simultaneously?
Would like to see how to record with it directly to your computer. Is USB better than Xlr??? Differences in sound between direct miking and DI??? Thx
I played all of 2023 on a catalyst 200 at all my gigs. The amp is great 👍 i play bigger gigs than 90% of people saying they dont like it. For real though get one if you are on the fence
How does the spark vs. Catalyst 60 compare for the home player in terms of suitability and sound? Price is right about the same right?
Just tried one at Guitar Can enter. Don't know much about it, but know I needed simplicity for house practice and recording. Nothing can replace the sound of my Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue, but this Fender is a nightmare to use as a quiet house practice amp or to put in your digital tracks without an outside microphone. I hope the Catalyst makes a difference. I have no experience with modifying an amp on the PC. It's not what I purchased the amp for but I like to use what's there.
Awesome video! I just got the 60. I can not find any video explaining the edit app. I'm old school and am switching to digital age. This ampPUTER is great but i still don't get the lingo or anything else AmPuter wise. Please do a video explain exactly how to use the app please. All I need is rhythm lead and clean ready at my foot. Thank you bro
If that's all you need, you don't need to bother with the editing app... just plug in, adjust your eq settings, and play.
SO I have been using a Fender G-dec30 for decades. How do you think they compare? Are they the same type of amp or is the Line 6 more advanced?
I gigged with it a couple times and the returned it. It's really just a spider with helix level modelling. Direct to pa it sounds great but it doesn't on its own cut through a mix and the low end disappears
so typical solid state issues. particularly line 6.
Like the Fender Tone Master x4 and starting at 1/3 the price for the 60 watt model.
I just heard someone playing some old worn Line 6 amp outside and thought it had great tone. The person playing it was driving it with a Fender Strat (I didn't where it was made.)
Anderton’s Did a decent video with Paul Hindmarsh but Paul didn’t go into a lot of the small details. I actually caught him holding down the tap tempo and I think he put the delay in post Or something similar. If you are in manual, dealing with the effects is difficult. The app is definitely the way to set this amp up
Can you use a small tube amp as the preamp instead?
Wonder how you think this compares to the Nextone.
Great review 👍 A beginner’s question, just to make sure: does anyone know if a looper pedal can be used with Catalyst’s effect loop?
Put your looper pedal in to the front of the amp!🎸🤘
Now I got the SE and I’m probably getting your pups in a pick guard when you have them and I’m getting the Catalyst 60 so it woul be nice to see you demo a 2 sounds 1. A Robben Ford dumble sound with delay and reverb. 2. A nice clean 4 position on the SE with spacious reverb maybe slight shimmer and some complimentary delay kinda cavernous but not overdone. Pretty please
Thank you, Dylan, for the video. Quick novice question about Catalyst: It has two banks of presets for each of six amp types for a total of 12 presets. Must those 12 presets be based on the six amp types (two each) -OR- could I create 12 presets all based on, say, the Clean amp type?
A head version would be nice. The speakers are always the weakness in these inexpensive amps.
Cool video I just bought me a 200 watt Catalyst I will get mine Friday I play a Mesa Boogie Mark 2B combo Amp but I am 62 and I am just getting tired of lifting it I am hoping this Catalyst will work for me I will be using my Boss ME 80 in front of the Amp but I might try the effects loop to see if it sounds better now I can go play at jam sessions with out hurting my back
Plus it will be great for my new backup Amp and I can pratice for hours with out burning up my tubes.😎🎸🤟
What do you think of the amp? I haven't owned a real amp since my 65 Twin Reverb reissue blew the power circuit and I traded it to a shady repair tech for an old Roland Micro Cube.
I love it I am very Happy with my new Catalyst 200 I am glade i went with the 200 watt I played it for my first gig and it sounded great I played a Casino gig and it had more then enough power I didn't get to use the XLR line out because people were playing cards so we couldn't be to loud I am 62 and I have a bad back I don't have to lift my Mesa Boogie anymore I used my Boss ME-80 so I just used the clean sound on the Catalyst with my effects and I was surprised how good it worked with my pedalborad I highly recommend this Amp but I suggest that you try them out first to see witch one works for you.
Update I still have the Catalyst 200 and I still love it I play all over Denver and It's light and that is a plus this Amp is the best Solid Amp I have ever owned and trust Me I've tried them All I haven't had not one problem problem I been playing guitar for 52 years and I know tone the XLR out is Awesome I am glade I chose the 200 watt it just has a fuller sound I give The Line 6 Catalyst 200 a thumbs up I highly recommend this Amp 😎🎸🤟🎵
Played the 200 at my local GC. Goddamn…color me impressed
Same
AMAZING! Yes do the video with the Katana and also the Powercab! It looks like stealing Powercab field with that power in feature in the loop! TOP!
Any amp can do that, so I'm unsure what the difference is between the Catalyst and other amps.
I regularly plug in through the effects return on my other amps when I want to use my digital modellers. The big difference with the line 6 powercab is the type of speakers ( it has a 12" & a 1" I think) they have in it... being FRFR speakers rather than "guitar" speakers.
@@castleanthrax1833 yes I do the same with my tube amps and it works ok, but it's not the same because we are using the poweramp section of a tube amp and it colors the tone. In the Catalyst it amplifies the sound without coloring it. Although the difference is not significant.
@gustavoloebel Most amplifiers power amp just amplifies the sound coming from the pre-amp... the eq and gain stages are all "attached" to the pre-amp.
Plugging into the effects loop return bypasses any tone shaping that occurs in the amp. It's basically the same as using an EHX 44 magnum or any other power amp that doesn't have an eq feature.
@@gustavoloebel You'll only colour your tone if you crank your tube amp, and if you're using a solid state amp, you'll get the same effect as if you're using a stand alone power amp like an EHX 44 Magnum or similar.
How does this amp compared to a FENDER TONEMASTER DELUXE REVERB?
I'm buying the 60 w version and played it at GC and love it. I have chosen it over the boss kitana. Did I make the right decision. I'm a intermediate player and wanted something that would keep up with a band. Thoughts? Cheers
Maybe you should've asked those questions BEFORE you spent your money?
Yes, it will very likely be loud enough to compete with a drummer, and if you're happy with the sounds you're getting and the price you paid... then you made the right choice.
The grass is a very similar colour on the other side of the fence.
Can you record tracks to the PC using the USB and line 6 software? Or do you need an interface?
No separate interface is required.
So if you use the line out XLR does it mute the amp? In a case where you don’t want stage volume and have in ear monitors?
Line 6 employee here: XLR out does not mute the amp; there is a MUTE selection on the power level switch if you want to do slient recording/in ears/etc.
I really like this amp. It doesn't sound as good as an all tube amp, but is quite close. I'm not sure if everyone who owns this knows that the clean 1st amp setting sounds best with good single coils with the gain all the way up which doesn't distort it and with the boost on at over halfway.
Will the fb short board work on this amp?
I'd love to hear pedals in front of it. I love my Vox Cambridge 50, but it sounds terrible with pedals. with MY pedals, anyway.
Is it similar to a Line6 Flextone because that is what Phill Mcknight said about it???
Well, my only concern is risk, because the price is good. You got one - maybe two - amps per distortion level. You have no EQ, no compressor. Lots of delays and reverbs that aren't really the problem in the competition. You do get a line out/in which beats the Katana 50, but again it seems like a lot of risk if you end up playing with pedals.
But I did get rid of my Katana when I heard the digital Spark, but the Spark is so limited - no volume pedal, no send/return etc...
I would like to see a video with pedals in front of it cause I have their previous model, the spider v and I want to know if this is an improvement.
This isn't a new model of the Spider V... it is a completely different series of amps.
Yes try some analoque pedals in front of it . And comparising to a katana
