I really like the simplicity of the Katana. Most of those crazy effects I never want. That being said, if I owned the Catalyst, I probably wouldn't run out and by a Katana either. Looks to me like you really can't go wrong either way.

Someone has been working on his chug skills! Nice well rounded demo. I know high gain isn't your thing at all but you still played a few things that let us metal guys hear what it can do. I hope this doesn't sound condescending, I don't mean it to be. I'm also impressed that you are one of the few channels doing demos that understands the purpose of an HSS guitar! Well done sir!!

Ryan, I love this review of this amp and it inspired me to purchase one my one came on Sunday and I’ve got to say it is absolutely brilliant I’ve owned the boss amps the next tone, Katana, Roland cubes, Blues cube 30, fender blues Jr 3, tweed and IV, and fender tonemaster RD, and twin, bassbreaker 007, Orange Rocker 15 and OR 15, but I’m gonna say this line 6 catalyst
Is the best tone I’ve ever herd.
The assignable effects foot switch and pre-or post effects settings are incredible.
The build quality is great, controls feel superb, a little nicer than the Tomemaster.
Ive tried the Catalyst with a Keeley Katana Boost on the overdrive setting and tc spark, both work really well.
One thing to point out is, other ss tube like amps don’t feel real, but this line 6, does.
    Thanks for the fantastic content.

One of the things that impressed me was how responsive it was to pick attack. Usually, you only get that level of response from boutique valve/tube amplifiers. The other thing is that digital recreations in the past have been troubled with clipping and this seems to replicate the dynamics in a more accurate and almost organic manner.
What has been done with solid-state technology and modeling over the past decade is nothing short of impressive. Line 6 has been in the game for quite a while and has really come a long way especially with the Helix lineup.
Roland is another brand that has been in the game a long time and hence why for the longest time the Boss Katana has been the standard by which modeling combos have been judged. It seems that every manufacturer is trying their hand at solid-state modeling of the beloved tube amps. Some do it better than others and I suppose that it all depends on what the consumer wants to spend.

This looks like the perfect companion to an HX Effects for players that want a pedalboard and discrete amp. Hook it up with the guitar into the input and the HX in the loop and you're good to go. Or four-cable method if you need some blocks in front of the amp. My understanding is that the 100 and 200 watt versions have MIDI input, so you can set up presets that change the amp's drive levels and such, too.

    Man, seriously great vid.
I have one of these on hold, looking to trade my trusty HX stomp that has served me well over 3 years. Your vid has sealed the deal.
Between your thorough video (not everyone is looking for 5 minute videos), the blue wall (calming) the green strat (alluring) and your admirable beard and humour. I’m throwing ya a like and subscribe.
Enjoyed watching your thoughtfulness as you played. I thought man, he looks stoned… haha, then came to oh wait he’s conducting an hour long video without any clumsy.
Also, I’ve seen two vids where people say you need two hands to change effects and reverbs. I was playing with this amp today and found, if you put effect or reverb at “NOON” and press and hold the effect or reverb, it starts strobing and then you can use the amp selection knob to choose the effect. Also to toggle between mod effects you simply need effect strobing as per above, and then press just tap tempo and it will cycle between delay, mod, pitch.
I think we can do this one-handed.

Solid Sate amps have come a long, long way since the 70s, it's not a bad sounding amp for a Modeling amp. Perfect for beginners, and the price is right, but I think I'd buy a Monoprice 15 watt tube amp combo before I'd buy this Line6, $50 less and it sounds sooo much better imo.

I doubt most people could tell the difference between a tube amp and a modeling amp blindfolded. This statement will only become increasingly true as technology continues to advance. Hilariously, the amps people have been talking smack about for so long will eventually make tube amps totally obsolete.

Well it would make my Katana redundant but its nice to see that buyers have a new choice. Katana kinda wins once you add the footswitch, not to mention the Boss Tone Studio app, but if you don't use either of those it might be a tough choice, especially since the Boss 50w lacks an effects loop.

This new series that Line 6 introduced to us guitarists, reminds me of the Peavey Vypyr VIP series, and the Vypyr X series. It would incredible one day if Peavey and Line 6 teamed up together to create an amp series together. Maybe call it, Line 6 Vypyr series, or maybe something like the Line 6 Hybrid series. A series of 3 different modeling amplifiers with Peavey's bass technology that they put inside the celestian speakers of their Vypyr amplifiers. But at the same time, Line 6 still sticks with their effects, amp models. Of course, they put the 60 second looper built into their future amps. But I'd love for Peavey to team up with Line 6 since I love Peavey besides Line 6. I'm definitely going to try the Cataylist series one day as well as the new version of the Vypyr series. Line 6 should've made 2 other versions of their Classic series. They should've came up with Line 6 Spider Classic 30, Spider Classic 60, Spider Classic 100, and Spider Classic 200. A future idea for Line 6 for future amp series, is to introduce a built in pitch shifter into their amps. Besides using the apps on our smartphones, we can use the built in pitch shifter on the amp itself by accessing a specific menu
within the interface pannel on the front of the amp. And we can go down semi-tones, even an octove or 2. But I'm overall stoked what Line 6 has introduced. Their new amp reminds me of the Peavey vypyr series since Peavey has a set of presets you can access within 4 different banks on their amplifiers. I'd love for Peavey to come up with future Vypyr series amps with digital technology, such as digital distortion and effects. Even though their vypyr series are solid state amps. It would be sweet if Line 6 can introduce transbute technology and digital amp modeling all in one amp, so by the help of an FBV pedal, or the knobs on the amp, you can switch between different types of distortions. So let's say if you wanted to shut off the Transtube analog distortion and effects, you can use a particular switch on the amp. And switch it to the digital amp modeling technology that's used in Line 6, Blackstar, and Boss Catana amps.

Discovered this amp late through the Dylan Talks Tone channel. He played the Katana mk2 and the Catalyst, both clean and dirty and unless trickery was involved, like dialing in crappy sounds on the Katana and really creamy sounds on the Catalyst, such chicanery always being an option with the internet, the Catalyst sounded pretty substantially better than the Katana. I was pretty disappointed because I'd just got my Wet Dry rig setup with the Katana doing wet.
I absolutely love Wet-Dry. You can just lose it with a fuzz pedal on the dry channel, and blend the wet channel in as much as you'd like to keep the clarity of the notes, so you're playing an absolutely blasted fuzzy sound you'd never go as far with by itself as you might not be able to tell when you're playing different notes or chords, but you still retain note clarity in your overall sound because of your wet amp.
The "Wet" channel doesn't have to be mod/delay/verb, it can be a clean channel, straight up, or you can feather the edges with as much hair/gain/breakup as you'd like, so the clean "wet" amp blends in with the fuzz, distortion, or whatever abomination you have going in your dry (fuzz, distortion, etc.) amp.
And you have independent volume control over each amp/channel (wet/dry), my "dry" amp is a 3 channel 100 watt tube head into a 4x12 and is usually my distortion amp, which I play on the clean channel with infinite clean headroom and get dirt through overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedals and the chunk channel that I dial the gain as low as it'll go, so its just into breakup, and then either play that straight up, or drive it further with the od/dist/fuzz/boost. My wet amp/channel is the Katana 50 mk2 that I'll dial in to be dynamically clean, meaning I can play lightly for pure clean tones, but dig in for breakup. I can also drive the wet/Katana channel with boost/dirt pedals to taste, or with dirt/breakup coming from the Katana itself through its various boost/dirt capabilities - the whole point being to blend that wet into the dry distorted amp/channel. Once you get your tones right on each channel, it is so cool to use volume on each amp to get the balance you want. Like you can go hell bent on the dry/distorted amp, and just slowly bring up the wet amp (dynamically clean, or with whatever break up is necessary) to get just the right amount of tonality in the sound. Like, you can do just a little bit of note clarity in an overall thunderous sound, or you can blend the wet amp much higher, and have a fully clean sound going, but with fuzz/distortion behind every note.
In the room, the amps blend into one sound. The Katana's speaker is very directional, and in particular with tonality moreso than just volume, like if you come off axis of the speaker, the highs will drop considerably and the volume will just drop a bit. The 4x12 is directional (all speakers are) but it is WAY less directional than the Katana's speaker. So, I've built a platform to lift the 4x12, just like a foot or slightly more. I do most of my writing/practicing sitting down, and my 4x12's front baffle is flat but at a slight upward slant. Then on that same platform, I've got like a little end table just the size of the footprint of the Katana, and so put the Katana on top of that, lifting the Katana 2.5/3 feet, putting the Katana's speaker in the same overall plane as the 4x12's speakers, all the speakers are pointing at my head. This helps the amps blend/meld in the room. I have yet to record these amps simultaneously, just managed to setup one mic, but will get the mics setup today, and we'll see how the wet/dry concept records, seeing how much bleed there is between each amp/mic. Think I'll put up a room mic too, at about my head's position to capture the blended room sound. We'll see how I can blend all 3 (or more) mic's to create my ideal (given my budget and abilities) recorded guitar sound.
And I've failed to mention actually using the wet amp as a "wet" amp - with modulation/delay/reverb. IT SOUNDS AMAZING! Only (really) tested it once, remember, I'm just setting this all up in the last couple of weeks and now as I type. But I went big and dirty with the "dry" amp (4x12) and clean with the Katana, with an EQD Afterneath pedal before the Katana. I absolutely loved it. LOVED IT. I could play thunderously with a stupidly maxed out fuzz (Woolly Mammoth knockoff that doesn't work with bass, passive or active, AT ALL, but sounds good with guitar), and still get this clear haunting note/tonality reverberating through the thunder. Like I could slam an open string E minor chord that is tonally incoherent, but hugely powerful and immersive, and let it ring out indefinitely through the square wave fuzz's infinite sustain, but also get this haunting blur of Fender strat chimey bell tone that also sustains because of the awesome design of the Afterneath allowing truly long or infinite reverberation... and as my fingers move a bit on my fretboard as I hold the chord, the close, but slightly off octave notes wobble, and just off fifth interval notes beat against each other, all being hammered by the oppressive square wave fuzz of the Woolly Mammoth, the raging E minor chord is alive and blazing, and the same for the Katana/Afterneath spirit tones, and these two very different sounds blend into each other, but as the sustain holds, and the notes beat off each other (clean your mind!) the Afterneath will come forward in the mix, then the tonality/beating of the notes will change, and the fuzz will come forward, and back and forth, and it just sound absolutely amazing, absolutely alive and dynamic.
I've come back to guitar music after leaving it in '95-96 for way greener electronic music production (after having my mind blown by Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, muziq, Boards of Canada). But after much time, spending a lot of time and money trying to acquire antique analog synths and drum machines that actually sound alive, that live and breath, I figured out that the six strings of a guitar, all slightly out of tune, and bent further out of tune by my disgusting fingers, THAT is a living sound. But just now, with this Wet Dry setup, I'm really getting living breathing sounds that are articulate and also wild, woolly, fuzzy... I'm just so happy... it's been a LONG quest!
And with all that said, I just discovered the newly released Line 6 Catalyst sounds better than the Katana! Haha! still, I'm happy. I'm getting sounds I really like. And I have no budget, it's taken me years to get together a few used guitars, used 100 amp 3 channel tube amp for $200, $100 4x12, $150 Katana 50 mk2 - all before the covid insanity and massive price inflation (plus a grip of pedals - one Way Huge, one EQD, some new Behringers, some used Boss, some from back in the day, a few affordable used EHX, and a bunch of duuuurt cheap clones - even bought a Cuvave Fuzz for $27, but without the magic resistor that makes the Cuvave Fuzz good, the "Ryan" or the "60 Cycle" Cuvave Fuzz, the sputtering, gated fuzz! Gonna mod it though, if I can find some electronic junk that has a megohm resistor that I can desolder and drill and solder and mod the Cuvave!
Anyway, remember, you didn't pay anything for this comment. It's all free.

I think they did a good job with pricing. For $299 this is not much more than Katana 50 and worth the little extra IMO. Has the fx loop, good sounds, simple software tweaking and a few more watts. Its a better buy than Katana 100 in that its cheaper and so makes a value perspective for those debating a katana 50/100. So many companies screw up trying to compete with katana with bad pricing, like blackstar silverline series. I totally would have considered one but they had to make silverline amps overly priced. Boss did the same with their own Nextone amps, if they were only $50-$75 more than their comparable katana they would have sold so much better. Then you got Peavey Vypyr X series coming out right now with competitive pricing and those idiots dont send out any amps to reviewers at all.

@@chrisfit I think you are right. I make mistakes as a beginner. In fact, I think I was thinking backwards. Boss was selling a ton of Katanas and I'll bet Line 6 said, "Wow! We can do that." And they did. This amp reminded me a great deal of the Katana. I noticed it's priced a little higher than the Katana 50 and may have a few more features. it has a tuner and an effects loop which Katana 50 doesn't have. It looks about the same size and the controls on the amp are similar. I noticed they didn't copy the Positive Grid Spark amp. Maybe their little Spider amp is equivalent to the Spark. I didn't see a looper demonstrated. Maybe, you can do that with software. I do like the fact that Ryan said Line 6 supports their products for a good duration of time. I guess if some of these amps go bad, it's dumpster time for the old amp. This video was a pretty good demo of the features.

It's a pretty exciting amp. You'll have 6 banks of Chan A/B selections which is quite handy when you rehearse or gigging. Manual mode handy too. Then there is the app where you can load presets which is a lot easier then carrying a laptop, what more do you want?

  • @deadoctopi5070

I pre-ordered one to pair with a line6 powercab to see what it can do going through it as a buddy system.
I don't think it'll completely eat the Katana's lunch. The MK2 head still has a better direct layout with those stacked knobs, and the 8 preset label system. I think this does its own thing, but one effect at a time seems like a miss. But who knows, maybe that changes in an update. Knobs based solely on color familiarity with Helix color codes is, well, I'm just looking at it for a pared down pedal platform, I'll say that.

In which case your FOH/PC/etc will hear something different to what you can hear from the built-in speaker, I take it?

I want to like this but the control interface is basically the same as my old Mustang I V2. The modulation and delay stuff is a bit inaccessible without the app, which means you can’t tweak or play with it much on the fly. That makes it less fun for practice/noodling, and it would need presets for gigging. Looks like the 100w one and 2x12 have a midi port, so maybe that’s how you’d control it.
EDIT: I guess the 60 has midi via USB. That’s workable.

My one issue with this sort of amps is while I Do appreciate making a less "bogged down" Modelling amp like with the Katana, I feel like they're trying to recreate the magic of having a Good Solid State amp that has it's own character, a bit like the Orange stuff, but missing that mark by having more generic(albeit very good) amp models. maybe it'll let you swap out the models, but I'd still really like more "Original" sounding SS amps(even if they use modelling tech). Like no one of those sounds really grab me as much as the Super Crush - but the Super Crush also costs twice as much. I feel like we could easily see a sub $300 1x12 SS combo that's got it's own thing going on.

For 90% of what I do reverb/delay a bit of tremolo and gain/boost is all I need.
