Someone has been working on his chug skills! Nice well rounded demo. I know high gain isn't your thing at all but you still played a few things that let us metal guys hear what it can do. I hope this doesn't sound condescending, I don't mean it to be. I'm also impressed that you are one of the few channels doing demos that understands the purpose of an HSS guitar! Well done sir!!
Dude I spit my coke on myself when you played the top gun riff. I thought I was the only one that loved that riff haha! Thanks for making this video. Much more palletable than most other guys review vids that talk too much. You play around with the settings just like I would. Got me as a subscriber now bud
Hey Ryan, thought I would share an update. Ended up getting the 60 over the Katana and the Vox. Sounds great in the room, good feel. And for my use couldn't be happier. Thanks again for the review!
Ryan, I love this review of this amp and it inspired me to purchase one my one came on Sunday and I’ve got to say it is absolutely brilliant I’ve owned the boss amps the next tone, Katana, Roland cubes, Blues cube 30, fender blues Jr 3, tweed and IV, and fender tonemaster RD, and twin, bassbreaker 007, Orange Rocker 15 and OR 15, but I’m gonna say this line 6 catalyst Is the best tone I’ve ever herd. The assignable effects foot switch and pre-or post effects settings are incredible. The build quality is great, controls feel superb, a little nicer than the Tomemaster. Ive tried the Catalyst with a Keeley Katana Boost on the overdrive setting and tc spark, both work really well. One thing to point out is, other ss tube like amps don’t feel real, but this line 6, does. Thanks for the fantastic content.
I remember when I was so excited to get my Peavey Rage amp. It had built-in distortion! Sharing built in too...I just pointed it out my bedroom window.
Man, seriously great vid. I have one of these on hold, looking to trade my trusty HX stomp that has served me well over 3 years. Your vid has sealed the deal. Between your thorough video (not everyone is looking for 5 minute videos), the blue wall (calming) the green strat (alluring) and your admirable beard and humour. I’m throwing ya a like and subscribe. Enjoyed watching your thoughtfulness as you played. I thought man, he looks stoned… haha, then came to oh wait he’s conducting an hour long video without any clumsy. Also, I’ve seen two vids where people say you need two hands to change effects and reverbs. I was playing with this amp today and found, if you put effect or reverb at “NOON” and press and hold the effect or reverb, it starts strobing and then you can use the amp selection knob to choose the effect. Also to toggle between mod effects you simply need effect strobing as per above, and then press just tap tempo and it will cycle between delay, mod, pitch. I think we can do this one-handed.
I really like the simplicity of the Katana. Most of those crazy effects I never want. That being said, if I owned the Catalyst, I probably wouldn't run out and by a Katana either. Looks to me like you really can't go wrong either way.
Hi Ryan,I watched your complete review on the catylist 60. Thanks for your extensive demo. I just purchased the 60 catylist so I was happy to see yours. I can tell you enjoyed your time with this amp.! I picked up a few things from your demo,"which is the best I have seen". I know you love your reverb! I'm hoping the foot switch can save me a lot of time. There is a lot of Tom foolery. With this amp. I did notice when you dig in it's great! Thanks so for dissecting nevegation
Thanks for a great demo! I'm buying a Catalyst 60 to replace my 25-year-old Spider 112. The old gal still works well but it's getting a little tired... I have used it for every sort of gig imaginable with my 40+ year old Yamaha SA2000 and now also run my D'Angelico thru it for jazz gigs. Can't wait to fire up the Catalyst 60!
Ryan I agree, you have work to dial in your sound! You do get the immediate gratification from the catylist.i have gone back and forth! "It's a keeper". As you said,"you can really dig in"! I completely agree. I'm still a little confused how to set up the amp channels? Thanks for the tip how to set up effects. You hade the best tutoria. Thanks Ryan, great demo. Jim K.
One of the things that impressed me was how responsive it was to pick attack. Usually, you only get that level of response from boutique valve/tube amplifiers. The other thing is that digital recreations in the past have been troubled with clipping and this seems to replicate the dynamics in a more accurate and almost organic manner. What has been done with solid-state technology and modeling over the past decade is nothing short of impressive. Line 6 has been in the game for quite a while and has really come a long way especially with the Helix lineup. Roland is another brand that has been in the game a long time and hence why for the longest time the Boss Katana has been the standard by which modeling combos have been judged. It seems that every manufacturer is trying their hand at solid-state modeling of the beloved tube amps. Some do it better than others and I suppose that it all depends on what the consumer wants to spend.
This looks like the perfect companion to an HX Effects for players that want a pedalboard and discrete amp. Hook it up with the guitar into the input and the HX in the loop and you're good to go. Or four-cable method if you need some blocks in front of the amp. My understanding is that the 100 and 200 watt versions have MIDI input, so you can set up presets that change the amp's drive levels and such, too.
I just bought a brand-new Line 6 Catalyst 200 on clearance for $250CAD. Talk about a no-brainer! 😁 EDIT: Uh-oh, if the 60 weighs 26lbs, I'm afraid to know what the 200 weighs!
i just got mine thru the guitar center for 239.00 one hell of a amp, got it yesterday.i will never need another amp.your right too f/f loud and still clean. now i need to relearn how to play.
14:39 You're a bit young to remember 'Pipeline Sequence' from; 5 summer stories, but what you're playing there reminded me of the song, it's an awesome tune.
Solid Sate amps have come a long, long way since the 70s, it's not a bad sounding amp for a Modeling amp. Perfect for beginners, and the price is right, but I think I'd buy a Monoprice 15 watt tube amp combo before I'd buy this Line6, $50 less and it sounds sooo much better imo.
I doubt most people could tell the difference between a tube amp and a modeling amp blindfolded. This statement will only become increasingly true as technology continues to advance. Hilariously, the amps people have been talking smack about for so long will eventually make tube amps totally obsolete.
I'm ditching my Katana 2x12 for the 200 watts 2x12 version... it's not yet available here in Uk ... i'm using it as a power amp as i have a mesa v pre ( it's no longer in production ) to warm it up . Great review btw
Great demo on this…I kind of soured on the KATANA after trying a few out, never owned one but these amps are very useful and technology will continue to go in this direction. Thanks!
Well it would make my Katana redundant but its nice to see that buyers have a new choice. Katana kinda wins once you add the footswitch, not to mention the Boss Tone Studio app, but if you don't use either of those it might be a tough choice, especially since the Boss 50w lacks an effects loop.
I find the Katana to be sort of meh without the app tones. I was very unimpressed by it which was disappointing because it was the amp that I was sure I was going to buy next.
Way back in the 90's I saw a inside cover in a guitar mag johnson amplification digital modeling I thought it was cool. All your studio sounds in one box. But Im reallytube whipped
It's your pickups on your guitar I have the same guitar and they are really bright sounding I am thinking about installing some gold Lace sensors in mine.
I have the Line 6 spider iv 75 watt but hardly ever use it except for one setting that sounds like the synth on Rush’s subdivisions and Van Halen’s jump.
Hey Ryan.. if you ever get the chance to use the Helix in to this… I would love to see the uses with both together. I’m wanting to get an amp for this kind of use and haven’t for a vid on something like that 👍
Just had mine delivered today ,my goodness playing tomorrow with my fender telecaster where do I start , I don’t know about setting’s to get the sound I want so that will be fun finding out. I’m very surprised at the quality for the money , looks fab , bought the foot switch aswell. You really know how to adjust things 🤔🫣🎸👍🤓
I just heard guitarist at guitar center playing katana 50 he dialed in this incredible high gain tone. I don't know which amp to get now was going to get line 6 but now not sure.
I had a solid state - digital amp before and when they break or start acting flakey, good luck trying to get it fixed. About all techs dont know what to do with it unlike tube amps.
It's a pretty exciting amp. You'll have 6 banks of Chan A/B selections which is quite handy when you rehearse or gigging. Manual mode handy too. Then there is the app where you can load presets which is a lot easier then carrying a laptop, what more do you want?
As someone who has owned various Line 6 modeling units, this seems like a stripped-back Spider V with some new features that you would find on a Boss Katana.
Can anyone explain why the amp is so noisy on high gain settings?? Theres a constant buzzing meanwhile my bandmates Blackstar is dead silent on max gain..
I'd have to play this but I'm not seeing this amp knocking the katana off the hill...katana still King 👑 with this direction of amps imo...demos I've heard head to head confirm this..imo of course...great work Ryan! Thanks for the demo and opinions..
I'd love the amp but can't get past only 2 channels. I have a katana and the pedal board and have access to 8 channels. Needed when gigging different songs.
If it doesn't have an FrFr speaker then it is still a good idea to MIC this? The cabinet simulation is only for the DI feed out..? In which case your FOH/PC/etc will hear something different to what you can hear from the built-in speaker, I take it? What tone/sound would you say the built-in speaker has? I mean, is it a Celestion or something and if so what model is it closest to, please? Thanks to anyone who can answer any of these questions -much appreciated!
Does the catalyst have a separate volume for the auxiliary? I have the THR10 and it has that feature which is great for playing along to music and backing tracks.
I pre-ordered one to pair with a line6 powercab to see what it can do going through it as a buddy system. I don't think it'll completely eat the Katana's lunch. The MK2 head still has a better direct layout with those stacked knobs, and the 8 preset label system. I think this does its own thing, but one effect at a time seems like a miss. But who knows, maybe that changes in an update. Knobs based solely on color familiarity with Helix color codes is, well, I'm just looking at it for a pared down pedal platform, I'll say that.
The best modelling amp is and remains the Roland Cube...unfortunately it is no longer manufactured...but I would buy it second-hand straight away. The successor, the Boss Kantana, is too complicated for me to set up. On stage, the settings have to be quick and the Roland Cube makes this quick and easy.
Trying to find a modeling amp that has more tube sound. At least, I think. Honestly, just started digging into things and heard about this one. Curious if this compares/ sounds better than a Boss Nextone.
If the FX Return is set to Power Amp In, will it bypass the Power AMP input signal if it detects a signal/cable in the guitar input jack? The Katana 100 head has this feature and its great.
I tried one out at GC. I like the crunch tones, however I hated having to get up to look and change the controls on the top....not ergonomic, but a lot of amps are like that. The chime is Vox like, I did not like the reverb. I'd consider buying one.
This or a THR30II for playing at home at family and neighbour friendly volumes? Will the Catalysts 12" speaker help it to sound more 'full'? I have the space for a real amp, so its more about the tone I can get at reasonable volumes. Anyone with both willing to drop some advice?
I know this is random but I wish Boss would have made the katana a one model amp. Just crystal clean and then let me have 6 pedal slots that I can arrange in any order and use multiples of (an OD into a Dist, into an EQ for example) not messing around with amp types or models.
They just don't want to give up their share of the modeling amp market to their competitors, which is expected when you're one of the big players in the industry.
I feel like it should come with an elaborate footswitch so I can save some pre sets and go without having to futz with the amp in mid gig. But it sounds good. Voxy brightness.
My guess is they won’t do anything. They’re really slow to move IMO. They also have a wide variety of effects that no one product will make that much of a difference.
@@chrisfit I think you are right. I make mistakes as a beginner. In fact, I think I was thinking backwards. Boss was selling a ton of Katanas and I'll bet Line 6 said, "Wow! We can do that." And they did. This amp reminded me a great deal of the Katana. I noticed it's priced a little higher than the Katana 50 and may have a few more features. it has a tuner and an effects loop which Katana 50 doesn't have. It looks about the same size and the controls on the amp are similar. I noticed they didn't copy the Positive Grid Spark amp. Maybe their little Spider amp is equivalent to the Spark. I didn't see a looper demonstrated. Maybe, you can do that with software. I do like the fact that Ryan said Line 6 supports their products for a good duration of time. I guess if some of these amps go bad, it's dumpster time for the old amp. This video was a pretty good demo of the features.
I love that the automatic captioning keeps saying [Music] and [Applause], I guess fading into fuzz sounds like applause.
I love how proud you are of the DRIP! Great vid man, the audio quality is amazing!
Fantastic review. Thanks for detailing the range available on each model channel. Sounds great and looks like a lot of fun can be had with this amp!
Ola - "But, does it chug?"
Ryan - "But, does it drip?"
You got me by 5:27 with the surf guitar !! Sounded fantastic. I grew up surfing and have always had a weak sport for classic surf tunes.
THANK YOU for actually dialing in some sounds and not just hitting the presets. More of that please 👍
Best video I've watched regarding the Catalyst - thank you (and I've watched quite a few).

I’ve got a 2021 Monoprice Tube 15 watt…. It’s nothing special

Great demo Ryan!
Can I ask you the simple question which amplifier is the best for single coil strat sounds at home?
Thank you
Nice to see a proper demo, I saw another demo of this where post production reverb was added to make it sound more impressive
woah, thats sketchy.
where did you see another demo with post-production reverb was used?
What is this song he starts playing at 28:46? i recognize it and feel like its from a video game but cant put my finger on it

Thanks great review and thoughts.Ordered one today.
You know what Ryan.... I think I DO wanna hear you play surf the whole time.
That has great natural compression in its voicing software. Very tube like tones.
I have the ax 212 there first amp still going after 25 years or so just bought the catalyst 100 but always love the old amp.
I saw these pop up this week. Very intrigued.
Oh man, don't stop Sleepwalk, that's legendary!
when on mute does it send out to an audio interface? The point being so that one could play through headphones at night into a computer and record.

Great demo on this…I kind of soured on the KATANA after trying a few out, never owned one but these amps are very useful and technology will continue to go in this direction. Thanks!
If had choices of the catalyst and Katana when i started playing i wouldve never never paid $800 for 40 watt tube amp.
Its an amazing time to be a new guitarist, the gear that is available is light years ahead of what I had as a teen in the 90s
Off-topic, but I swear that $4 made the Bad Cat your best-looking guitar. You've got the touch. 😉

I love these modeling Amps.. any chance on a Fender GTX vs Katana vs Catalyst 6 video? ..And if you could only have one of them which would it be?
Can this thing run more than one effect at once? Rever and Delay at the same time?

I am between this one and Harley Benton tube 15 to play neo soul at home, any suggestion? Thanxx from Spain
Is this a good pedal platform?
I know this is random but I wish Boss would have made the katana a one model amp. Just crystal clean and then let me have 6 pedal slots that I can arrange in any order and use multiples of (an OD into a Dist, into an EQ for example) not messing around with amp types or models.
That would be cool
They just don't want to give up their share of the modeling amp market to their competitors, which is expected when you're one of the big players in the industry.
I feel like it should come with an elaborate footswitch so I can save some pre sets and go without having to futz with the amp in mid gig. But it sounds good. Voxy brightness.
with MIDI in, you could use virtually any Midi foot controller to access the presets, as well as control other Midi functions.
@@rickgagliano852 But those cost as much as the damn amp :)
@@rickgagliano852 Also, not with the 60!
Was the surf sound a preset?
How will Boss react to this increased competition? Software improvements may be an inexpensive upgrade.
