OK, I'm a grumpy old Whovian who loves classic Who and hasn't enjoyed modern Who for the better part of a decade. Given that, I wasn't that interested in checking this channel out, since I've been burned before by the main Whatculture channel, as well as Watchmojo and others, who cater exclusively to new Who fans. However, I thought I'd give this video a go, because it seemed like one that might actually teach me something, and I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised. I really appreciate that you've broadened your scope to cover classic Who, even if I doubt that any of you are classic Who fans (Ramona, really?). But I do appreciate the effort and will happily overlook the odd mistake if you continue to embrace the show as a whole. You've managed to make this grumpy old fan a supporter of this channel.
Brilliant video, but you need to get names and facts right. It's 'Romana' not 'Ramona'. Not good this early doors on a dedicated Doctor Who channel. Makes us obsessed fans feel like you're not as into Doctor Who as us and are just cashing in. It is so unfortunate that Christopher Eccleston had such a poor experience. He played one of the best incarnations of The Doctor and I thoroughly enjoyed watching him in the role. On the other hand, I can't really see some of the 2nd series episodes (especially "School Reuinion") working with Eccleston still playing The Doctor -- that one HAD to be David Tennant.
Indeed, ‘twin dilemma’ , ‘ frontios’ to name but two are a damn sight worse. You have to have some background knowledge to understand the episode. Linda is doctor who appreciation society local group. Such groups did let their focus wonder to other things, just a Linda does. Peter Kay, while in human form is satirising Ian Levine, a man who whipped me and several hundred other fans up into a frenzy at one convention and is at the very least something of a Marmite person. The monster was foisted on RTD by the BBC via a Blue peter competition. Marc Warren’s performance, as indeed all the other Linda members’, is note perfect. It is an episode I have watched again and again. Can see why Kay was upset though.
Internet consensus: "Love and Monsters is the worst Doctor Who episode ever". Jodie Whitaker: "Hold my sonic screwdriver". Okay, so that sounded a little dirtier than intended ....
I agree with a lot of these comments. I dunno if its been said but the actor Clive Swift is someone who really did HATE the show and being on it. His Doctor Who Magazine interview has gone down in infamy 🙃
Tom Baker was my favorite Doctor for most of my life and the late Mary Tamm who played Lady Romana was my favorite of all companions, just an elegant gorgeous woman.
I pretty much only know of Eccleston for Doctor Who and Thor: The Dark World. I kinda feel like had he stuck on longer as the Doctor, we would have seen him in more by now.
Christopher Ecceston probably isn't the easiest person to get along with, he's admitted to a variety of mental health issues over the past few years, so there could be fairly understandable reasons why RTD and him didn't get along, and the Beeb weren't too keen on working with him again.
It might be for the same reason he left. Baker said that, when he started, he basically read his lines as himself. He WAS the Doctor, he got to decide how is character looked and acted. He left when they started vetoing his input, and I wonder if he felt similarly constrained doing that cameo. And maybe he's just being whiny, it was just a cameo, but on the other hand, he's Tom fucking Baker, let him do it his way.
Meh, I'm never much of a fan of filler episodes where the main cast is barely present. And not just on Doctor Who. I always skip the Ghost Facers episodes on Supernatural, for example. The only exception to this is Blink. Blink was awesome. Love and Monsters I can absolutely do without.
It was created by a child (literally) who won a drawing I believe. It was made by a 9 year old and Davies really liked it. It just isn't in the tastes of the majority of fans
The scene with Matt Smith and Tom Baker was one of the best ever on Dr Who, Baker has such great charisma even older and you could see the way Smith watched him like a real fan. The idea of the Doctor retiring one day as the Great Curator was genius. As far as Christopher Eccleston is concerned non of us would be sitting here reading these comments without his wonderful performance. The chemistry between him and Billie Piper plus all the great supporting characters such as Captain Jack, Mickey Smith Jackie Tyler and the slitheen, the great are you my Mummy? They all added to make that first season so good and it ensured there would be nearly two more decades of Who!!!
Well, my first look to doctor who is on the love&monsters episode. This section actually introduced me doctor who. For that reason, I cannot put it on the worst ep. It's special to me.
Christopher Eccleston is on the Blacklist of a lot of studios and it has nothing to do with the BBC and Doctor Who. He has a reputation for putting his own films down. Gone in 60 Seconds, he calls the worst decision of his career. Thor the Dark World. Whilst doing press for the films release he was asked why he did the film. Most actors usually say great script, great character or the chance to work with the director. Ecclestons response to the interviewer "I did it for the money", those were his own words. Marvel were not happy and didn't even consider asking him back, even though he had a contract for more than one film
My favorite doctor was eccelston his doctor was a classic superhero who did not need a costume to run around saving lives he dresses like a human yet he is a genius with anger problems

I thought love and monsters was alright to be honest. It definitely wasn't my favourite episode of the series by no means, but I thought the characters were likable enough and I can't really say I think the sense of humour was really tasteless either. So I quite liked it, I think I only prefer episodes where the doctor is on screen more, although I still think it can be interesting when he isn't so much and I still enough the episodes, just when they're put up against episodes with him as the main character in the episode I just prefer those episodes just that bit more personally.
@@mickpowell8503 same with turn left and last of the time lords! less doctor-heavy episodes can totally work, love and monsters just fell a little flat
Tom Baker was the best. He was the first and favorite for me. His era is the most epic with three periods in gothic, comedy and super science fiction. Wonderful stuff.
Eccleston didn't hate the show at all. Just like it says the hire ups he disliked. He made a 9th Doctor video for a sick child in the hospital. So how can this clown say Eccleston hated it?
Today it's been announced that CE is returning to the role with Big Finish. They've got 12 episodes so far, with potentially more to come down the line. So yeah :)
Liked love and Monsters episode , thought it was funny , and different. theses people are actors who get paid lots of money for their job , and who have fans who love their work , they all should get a life.
Surprised there’s not more. The way the producers treated them is the same way they tried to infantilize the public. All these actors did have great potential. Good assessment.
Eccleston and Davies fell out purely because he didn’t like the way the runners were being treated, so after I think it was the third or fourth day of filming said he was quitting at the end of the shoot, plus he hated shaving every day. He was asked to return for the 50th anniversary and did a bit of soul searching he met with Moffat to refuse rather than say no over the phone or through his agent. He had no issue with Moffat so showed him that courtesy.
SpadesOfPaint Studios shaving everyday is annoying. I had to do it for my job for years coz my beard grows really fast lol so I can understand that one but I wasn’t getting the money he was.
Tony Montana yeah I get why he got annoyed and for some that just happens a lot my facial hair grows quick to but If I was in his position that would be the least of problems
Hold on. Did they say Tom Baker wasn't paid any attention other than Matt Smith's focus? How dare them. The man is a god to the whovians and the production and crew should have respected that. We love you Tom you were our doctor! I'm glad the show has gone down the shitter. Only people watching now are children and feminists. Bring back Russel T Davies! And men!

This is the first time I've heard people not like 'love and monsters'. It's probably one of my favorite episodes along with blink and midnight. I love seeing others without the doctor dealing with aliens as the doctor can't be everywhere all the time. I love ELO as well and I thought the episode was kinda of down to earth and 'real' ppl
Actually Steven Moffat had lunch with Christopher Eccleston to discuss the 50th and the story was Eccleston wanted Joe Ahearn to direct. Moff already contracted Nick Hurran for the job so Eccleston declined and went on to do Thor: Dark World. Ironically he hated his experience doing that movie. For the record Eccleston did get along with Moffat. Moff respected his wishes about not being on the 50th one reason the effects crew did not fully morph John Hurt's War Doctor to Eccleston's Doctor in Hurt's regeneration.
It's not my favorite, but it was an interesting change of pace. The idea of doing something from the minor characters' perspective was a fun idea. As I recall, the villain was the result of a design-a-monster contest circulated among the (younger) fans--which may explain something.
Tom baker is one of my favorite old doctor who's, second is Christopher eccelston and 3rd david.tennent. Although there are a small amount of Matt Smith episodes that made me laugh and stuck with me.
5:25 wasn't this episode/villain created by a child? As in I swear there was Blue Peter competition for kids to make a doctor who villain and I think it was this episode? Maybe my memory is wrong it's been 14 years
Even the child who designed the monster was unhappy with the episode - because his design had the monster's true form be the size of a bus, not a person.
Watching the original series, growing up, I always thought it would be great to be on the show and I would've loved to have done that. :) "Love and Monsters" is weird. They had, up to that point, spent so much time building up Rose's mom and Micky, so them using a bunch of one-shot characters for a Doctor lite episode makes no sense. It would've been so much better if they had just done an episode focusing on them and their daily lives. Maybe have an alien, disguised as a human, trying to pump them for information to find the Doctor or something. It' also kind of hard to bag on the alien too much since it was created by a kid for a contest. It might have been a bad idea to do that AND a Doctor lite episode at the same time. Too many experimental things in the episode.
It hurts that Eccleston didn’t have a good time on Doctor Who. It’s fucking infuriating that the BBC dicked him around like they did. He is a really good actor and without a doubt was very good as the 9th Doctor. I wish he could have had a better relationship and done 3 series like the other Doctors

On the other hand, I can't really see some of the 2nd series episodes (especially "School Reuinion") working with Eccleston still playing The Doctor -- that one HAD to be David Tennant.
I’m so sad Christopher didn’t enjoy being the doctor, because I loved him as the doctor.
I don't hate Love and Monsters. I mean, it's not Robots of Death, but it's not Twin Dilemma either.
She can hold my Sonic Screwdriver
I really wonder what happened between Eccles and Davies, because them working together on The Second Coming lead to him being The Doctor.
I agree with a lot of these comments. I dunno if its been said but the actor Clive Swift is someone who really did HATE the show and being on it. His Doctor Who Magazine interview has gone down in infamy 🙃
It's such a shame about Christopher Eccleston. He was such a brilliant Doctor!
"RAMONA"
Tom Baker was my favorite Doctor for most of my life and the late Mary Tamm who played Lady Romana was my favorite of all companions, just an elegant gorgeous woman.
"Love and Monsters" is hated? Ive always loved that episode, its kind of a surprise that people think its the worst ever.
I mean if u look at is a reviewer and not actually watch it
You’ll see how awful it was
I pretty much only know of Eccleston for Doctor Who and Thor: The Dark World. I kinda feel like had he stuck on longer as the Doctor, we would have seen him in more by now.
He was also in "Heroes" for a while, and that sh*tstorm GI Joe movie.
He told me and a crowd that he at times wished he'd stayed on a bit longer.
Love & Monsters was not a bad episode in my opinion. I'm so glad that David Tennant was not on here, he is such an inspiration to me.
Christopher Ecceston probably isn't the easiest person to get along with, he's admitted to a variety of mental health issues over the past few years, so there could be fairly understandable reasons why RTD and him didn't get along, and the Beeb weren't too keen on working with him again.
Chris worked well with Davies actually and met him during Casanova
That was David

True
Only if you count time off air, which is a bit disingenuous.
3:21 How? He's the most popular incarnation of the Doctor.
100% guess but I'd say because they weren't fawning over him the entire time he was there. For better or worse dude's got a huge ego.
I liked Love and Monsters. It wasn't meant to be intellectual, more a brain rest.
It was amazing. The first episode i ever watched
I love it!!!!
I thought it was a weird episode, but I didn't hate it.
It just isn't in the tastes of the majority of fans
baker has actually changed his views now
The scene with Matt Smith and Tom Baker was one of the best ever on Dr Who, Baker has such great charisma even older and you could see the way Smith watched him like a real fan. They all added to make that first season so good and it ensured there would be nearly two more decades of Who!!!

no one's as powerful as the Doctor.
I was in the programme in the Tenant era. There were a few quite shitty assistant directors though Graeme Harper was delightful
"The worst episode of the show"
* cough cough * points at Orphan 55
*points earlier at the Twin Dilemna*
My favorite doctor was eccelston his doctor was a classic superhero who did not need a costume to run around saving lives he dresses like a human yet he is a genius with anger problems
So he looked the least like the character he was playing.
@@BWMagus this doctor is the only doctor to not be as eccentric in dress except capaldi who would wear a black hoodie at times these are the only 2 doctors I know to not dress like a timelord
@@yummytatersubliminals9651 Well, the first doctor wore a suit, usually. But that was almost a different show back then. Point is, the doctor being odd was sort of the point, so having Eccleston dress totally normal is sort of missing the point.
@@BWMagus I just like his style he is like Jack Harkness he travels thru time but dress normal
@@yummytatersubliminals9651 Kinda boring.
Man, I saw Chris and was like, "wait what, he was one of my favorites". Shame it ruined a lot for him:(
The show runners did
It'd be interesting to know how Dr. Who would have gone if Eccleston had gotten along with Davies and had fun on the show.
@lisagaye4404 we would have, just later...
I thought love and monsters was alright to be honest. It definitely wasn't my favourite episode of the series by no means, but I thought the characters were likable enough and I can't really say I think the sense of humour was really tasteless either. So I quite liked it, I think I only prefer episodes where the doctor is on screen more, although I still think it can be interesting when he isn't so much and I still enough the episodes, just when they're put up against episodes with him as the main character in the episode I just prefer those episodes just that bit more personally.
same, i don't really like it, but when i started to see the mind of other people on internet, i understood this was bad for a lot of peope
Mostly agree apart from Blink... that meshes the Doctor perfectly into the story with less screen time.
@@mickpowell8503 same with turn left and last of the time lords! less doctor-heavy episodes can totally work, love and monsters just fell a little flat
@@pheebthedweeb5652 yeah Love and Monsters was a little odd especially the love life reference 🥴
@@mickpowell8503 oh god, yeah
Tom Baker was the best. He was the first and favorite for me. His era is the most epic with three periods in gothic, comedy and super science fiction. Wonderful stuff.
I hope Eccleston in the future would return and as Doctor 9 and give him a story that would give a proper sendoff and give him a proper sendoff
Shaving everyday is a problem that’s kinda petty consider some actors do more
SpadesOfPaint Studios shaving everyday is annoying.
And men!
Well, Tom Baker said that. He does have a bit of an ego so take it with a grain of salt. And I find it hard to believe David Tennant didn't treat him well.

I loved "love and monsters" 👀
Same
6:13 Calls Romana Ramona and runs a Dr Who channel lol
So that explains why they didn’t bring back the 9th doctor for the day of the doctor special
It's amazing, how good the first series turned out to be, if Eccleston was so unhappy all the time. He's a great doctor!
I’ll have you know, Love & Monsters is a underrated masterpiece which subverts all expectations and is the best episode of Who.
It's not my favorite, but it was an interesting change of pace. The idea of doing something from the minor characters' perspective was a fun idea. As I recall, the villain was the result of a design-a-monster contest circulated among the (younger) fans--which may explain something.
Well, I expected "good" and got "bad", so I guess that expectation was indeed subverted. Not sure why you approve of that.
Tom baker is one of my favorite old doctor who's, second is Christopher eccelston and 3rd david.tennent.
Although there are a small amount of Matt Smith episodes that made me laugh and stuck with me.
Tom Baker started to get cold feet as early as season 15,when he fell out with incoming producer Graham Williams
Where's Steven Berkoff, now that's someone who REALLY hated Doctor Who
Super excited about the new channel.
6 is terrible, Tom Baker is a treasure, but it makes me love Matt Smith that much more for being good to him.
Watching the original series, growing up, I always thought it would be great to be on the show and I would've loved to have done that. :)
"Love and Monsters" is weird.
Caves of Androzani isn't just "considered one of Davison's best". It's considered the greatest Who story of all time. Give credit where it's due.
Really? News to me.

Really enjoyed that very informative
