absolute legend
dude this was by far the realest day in my life i've ever seen. Where things are a mess, you suddenly crack the best jokes to make up for excuses to not have cleaned the room, envious of juniors' skills and talents, and being yourself. Nothing pretentious. Things shouldn't always have to be all aesthetic and nice. This was such a breath of fresh air.

Hey! Can't tell you how enteratining this video was on two accounts: firstly, your commentary and editing style is hilarious and I hope to see more of it but more importantly, it was very insightful, especially as I am (hopefully) starting my undergraduate degree for Biology at Oxford this October!

I still get that moment of illogical horror when I start an old centrifuge and it just starts clattering like there’s no tomorrow. Even though I know I balanced everything perfectly, I still sometimes get the irrational fear that it’ll just up and explode in my face

Hi Ilya, I’ve been watching your videos (along with other Cambridge/Oxford oriented RUclipsrs) and am planning out my own flavour of Cambridge content for a channel after being accepted for Research degrees in Bio-Anthropology. I just wanted to ask, are the Cambridge university and other crests (that I see in your and others’ videos) ok to use without permission or must one first obtain permission from the Uni to use them? On another note, I absolutely love your content and have found it both entertaining and informative during my application process the past year! Maybe we’ll see each other around.

Aside from the application process your videos have been rather helpful in planning how id like to set up my own channel and what content to cover - I rather enjoy your approach to videography. As an American that was admitted I’ll also have some videos planned for the differences in application processes and between the American and UK higher education systems (something I’ve not found a lot a of content on) along with the other themes! I’ll let you know once I get the channel up and running. If fate shines favourably perhaps we could have a potential future collaboration. :)

I did my bsc in biology and decided to avoid wet lab for masters so I’m now doing bioinformatics. Interesting to see wet lab life, also funny cos I also climb after uni

Wow, what luxury to get up at 9 am and get to the lab at 10. When I did my undergrad, I had to be at lectures for 9 am. And when I did my PhD, I had to be in the lab no later than 8.30 or else I'd get in trouble with my supervisor. :-D
I can't complain! Although to be fair my undergrad at Cambridge was 9am lectures Monday to Saturday in addition to practical classes and supervisions. And although I do come in at 10 these days, I can spend long hours and sometimes weekends in the lab too.

Cambridge students tend to be above average academically. You'll probably have to work to be above average to get in.

Hey! I've got videos about this on my channel but in summary I did the following A-levels and got these GCSE grades: chemistry, biology, maths, further maths, Dutch (which I speak already). 9A*s, 3As, and 1B at GCSE.

Cell culture without gloves, each to their own. Whatever works for you. Great vid though.
Should you be wearing disposable gloves for cell culture lab?
That's a good question. My supervisor recommends we don't and instead douse our hands and forearms in ethanol, because from his experience it is less likely to lead to contamination.

It's a tough one unfortunately, funding is really hard to get especially if you're international. I didn't get funding for my master's and I'm a British citizen with a first from Cambridge!

Not sure why this came up in my recommendations! Have you had many issues with contaminations? I’ve never seen anyone work in a bsc with cells and not wear gloves!! 😮
I've so far had no issues with contamination. My supervisor has found that not wearing gloves actually reduces contamination as long as you sanitise well

It's not a liberal arts college so there's no majors or minors. And there's no nursing either (Cambridge is more academic than vocational)

@@IlyasCambridgeAdvice I guess it’s just cultural differences in science? I’ve heard some places in the States also perform autopsies/anatomy courses on body donors without gloves while I shudder at the thought of touching formalin soaked _anything_ with bare skin

@@jeromechen1916the purpose is a day in the life. And it’s useful for students wishing to study lab-orientated courses. And people in different universities post their experiences all the time, there’s nothing wrong with it.
I thought this was a joke when it (irrelevantly) appeared in my feed. You have to have a big ego to even imagine that a day in the life of a university is of any interest of substance whatsoever.
Day in the life videos are not necessary about flexing or having a big ego, but about sharing what your life is like so that other people can decide if that lifestyle is suited to them. I've had people comment on this video saying that this has made them realise they wouldn't want to study at Cambridge, and others saying it's made them want to study at Cambridge. Hence, this video is of interest to some people.
