The amount of ppl in these comments who are shocked that anyone could do this is mind blowing, im grateful that so many find it as an unthinkable act but also am saddened that there obviously isn't enough awareness about SBS. Ppl do alot of things you would never imagine out of frustration.

Yeah, they're lucky but i hope they don't get caught off-guard. That anger can come fast and unexpectedly... your patience vanished. thankfully i walked away and now know to either call someone or just step outside. Much better to leave a baby crying for a few minutes if you absolutely must. It scared the shit out of me and i sobbed all night. I even cried for all the parents who made this mistake because i now know its happened to parents who love their children. It only takes a second of that rage to ruin everything.
I felt terrible and ashamed that i could even feel angry at a newborn, those first few weeks i couldn't imagine that even being possible. it wasn't until i talked about it w family that i realized even good good ppl can lose their patience. What's important is what you do when that happens.

My son had severe colic and would scream continuously for 8 hours almost everyday for the first year of life. It was very overwhelming to say the least and yes, somedays I would lose my patience. Whenever I would get to the point of losing my patience, I would walk away for a few minutes to gain my composure and then come back to him. It is OKAY to leave your baby somewhere safe and walk away for a few minutes when you’re overwhelmed. Baby will be fine. Taking the frustration out on baby is never EVER ok! I think all parents should be taught about SBS before going home with their baby.

I'm 82, I was tossed in a closet at 2 months old. At 30, I fell flat on my back and went to a chiropractor. He took full body x-rays and asked if I was ever dropped on my head. I asked my mom, and she said no. Around 50 we were talking, and she said I had colic and cried a lot and at 2 months old "daddy put me in the closet" I bounced off the back wall. My dad was a mean drunk.
At 2 months old, being in pain and abandoned in the closet, I didn't bond. I have spent my life looking for what I believed love looked like. When I left a relationship, I didn't look back. In retrospect, it is like love is like Teflon, it just slides away. Please don't do that to your babies. I recently had an MRI that showed some damage. I always feel alone.

My first baby had colic and this was peak pandemic so we were completely isolated with no help. The intense frustration and exhaustion was SO real. There were many times when she had been crying for hours and I just couldn't soothe her. Then those times it was too much for too long and I had to set her down and take a few deep breaths to come back. I wish people would just know the frustration is real and very normal.
Don't feel guilty for the frustration or for stepping away as it can ensure you and your baby stay safe. It's when people don't step back to take that breath or break that terrible things happen in an instant.
That being said, this is showing quite a violent shake. I honestly can't imagine doing that even at my most frustrated. Really heartbreaking as they are just so helpless and look to you for everything.

  • @mompols
    @mompols Год назад +28

Sleep deprivation, hunger, post partum blues, and stress. When these things pile up, your judgement as an adult is clouded and you'd do anything just to stop it. But of course parents will fight the urge to do so. Having the urge to shake your baby to stop them from crying is not uncommon. But if you respond to those feelings that's when issues will start. If you feel this way, put down your baby on a safe space (cot, crib, clean floor etc) and walk away for a few minutes. Breath in fresh air, walk around etc. Let them cry for a bit. When you're ready, pick your baby again and you'll be calmer. You got this mom and dad 😊 I know you always do your best. You can definitely fo this.

Only thing tho is that when im dealing with purple crying episodes and have not gotten any sleep, my depression meds are working as they use to, I haven't eaten anything all day, I have a headache from him crying, I'm overstimulated and overtouched, I've had the thoughts of " what can I do to make him shut up" and it truly is heartbreaking bc ill end up screaming at him bc sometimes thats all I have left to help me. Its rough and I've had to walk away bc I was scared what of what I'd do if I touched him at that moment. Its safer for them for you to calm down and regroup then risk shaking them and making them brain dead for the rest of their lives
It isnt just a traumatic brain injury. They can have blindness. They can have gastroparethis ... be deaf... lose all function and ability to do anything for themselves.

the little up and down „bops“ you often see people doing with their babies are fine. It’s actually this back an forth motion that does the most damage, because babies can’t hold their head up by themselves so you can imagine what happens to the brain. it’s like instant whiplash, but repeated. the little up and downs can actually calm a baby, very gently of course and no abrupt movements, and always make sure their head is supported

A baby can already suffer serious and fatal damage from being shaken less violently. And it may only take one shake to do severe damage to brain and spine. It’s the back and forth movement and the fact that babies cannot hold their head on their own yet, so the head falls back and forth very forcefully when shaken which creates severe whiplash in the brain, and it can lead to swelling and bleeding. Of course you should also not shake a baby up and down, since their head will still not be supported and fall back and forth. The head always needs support.

Most people are shocked since they think shake, not fling around.
Shaking your baby is quite normal, and the misleading diagnosis name for what in reality actually is manhandling a baby is just that; misleading.

I think I actually picked him up once & shook him like a maraca. He’s completely fine now…. Maybe not all babies get affected by that.

If you were also small the force may have felt like more than it actually was. Also, as they get older the chances of severe injury are probably less likely as their head and neck strength gets better over time. So shaking a one year old (while still bad) is quite different than shaking a 2 month old.

I say this as someone who has emotionaly unstable personality disorder, I would never want to be around babies. i struggle to regulate my emotions and although I don't think I could actually hurt a child, I don't trust myself. I used to hit myself a lot when frustrated, so it's likely I'd hurt myself than anyone else, but that is also not good when caring for a baby
Anyone who has mental health issues should not have children unless they have a sufficient support system that allows them to self-soothe and take a break from the baby for at least a few hours to get some sleep. My mother had thr same disorder and she beat us often as kids. i hate this so much, but as I got older I realised how easy it was to lose my shit around small children and having three like she did without any help would make me commit suicide. I never understood why she willingly had children and I never forgave her for nor seeking psychiatric help. She left a lot of damage by bot doing so
If you're mentally unstable, don't have kids. They deserve a patient and loving person who us equipped to deal with them 24/7. It's okay to not be that person, but it's not okay to ignore that and have them. The society has to also learn not judge people so hard for not having kids, not everyone is born to be a parent. If people didn't feel like having kids was such an important life goal there would be so much less avuse and broken souls.

People shake a baby thwt hard or it takes less .. like someone wrote who shakes a baby that hard .. then I'm thinking if they shake a baby that hard then their intend was to literally hurt the baby ... then you hear people saying yes we understand that the baby is driving you crazy and at this point pass the baby to someone else and give yourself a break ... well .....if it takes that hard as you demonstrated . Then I feel that it's not stress that makes the shaker. . It's plain old child abuse with the intent to hurt the baby or lets get real or knowingly with the intent of murder the. Baby ... and if a person can do this .. they have some big issues that will last their whole lifetime. .. so to me your senring the wrong message. Its like saying to the shaker ,, you can get away with murder just play your cards right... here is what should be play out. .. everyone knows if you shake a baby no matter what. .. your going to jail for the rest of your life and everyone will know you wanted to murder a child or the intent to.... plain and simple .. so now they know that this is a serious issue and remember their to cowardly to deliberately hurt themselves but its different to hurt others.... so none of this nice nice stuff it doesn't work...
