    Mark, Nice detailed video. I got CSR in 2016 and cancelled in 2020 after fee increase. Accumulated UR points using Ink and other SUBs. Got CSP for SUB a few months back at 6/24 due to them being lenient. 2 days ago had to book international travel for $2.3k. To make most use of UR points I upgraded my CFU to CSR (proving you can have both CSP and CSR at same time but not SUBs for both) and instantly made the chase travel portal flight purchase using 1.5k ish points. CSR annual fees paid for itself. I have other travel redemptions too in coming months. If one has a lot of UR points to redeem for travel including from P2 makes sense to upgrade to CSR and redeem with 1.5x boost. Best option for family economy traveler like me.

    I'd say the CSP is one if not the easiest beginner travel cards to justify for my personal use case. However, I've definitely considered product changing it to the CSR in the near future. It really all comes down to how much you travel and how much you'll be using that 50% point boost on the CSR compared to the 25% point boost on the CSP in my eyes. Nice video as always Mark!

    CSP effective AF $95 -$50 hotel credit = $45 is very easy to do so without staying at the hotel. Here is how ...
    1. Book the hotel through Chase travel portal that cost $50 or more ...
    - Make sure you choose a refundable reservation.
    - Some hotels would have a cancellation due date. You should plan a reservation far out.
    2. Wait for $50 credit post on your statement credit, then cancel a reservation.
    $50 hotel credit will stay.
    You're welcome

    I think the question becomes “does priority pass, better insurance & +0.25 cpp justify the $455 difference between CSP & CSR?”
    In my case I don’t travel enough yet to benefit from the CSR, so im good with the CSP.

    That $300 travel credit would be very useful for when I am forced to get a hotel due to mechanical issues.
    My employer repays hotel expenses when the truck has to remain in the shop overnight, if I cannot stay in the truck. That singular $300 statement credit would translate into upwards of $600 in value for me, paying for the card by itself.
    (And I have not had a single year where I haven't needed to get a hotel for at least a couple nights due to some mechanical issue.)

    I think the CSP is the better deal but I’m going to opt for the CSR because I want more premium travel benefits. The effective AF for me would be $250 vs the CSP’s $95 because I wouldn’t be using the $50 hotel credit just for the sake of using it (Airbnb enjoyer). So paying an extra $155 would warrant the additional benefits that the CSR brings.

      Depends on what you value / care about. If I were to say "use the CSR for an expensive tech purchase," but someone didn't care about insurance protections & the claim filing process, then that suggestion wouldn't be valid for that person.
      Fortunately, there's not much of a difference between 1X vs. 1.5X.

    Awesome update! I was looking for a detailed updated 2023 comparison on these two cards. I have CSP but have always wondered about getting to CSR. I still can't justify that annual fee on the CSR. Its alot of work to make sure you get the maximum values that make the CSR worth it. In terms of the non-travel uses of the cards, I think the CSP is a better, more versatile card. I don't have the bandwidth for a card like CSR in terms of maximinze benefits.
    Can you maybe do an updated video on your best cards for dining? What is your opinion as to the reasonable expectation on dining rewards, especially outside the Amex ecosystem? With my CC set up, I have tons of 3% back on dining, but I can't find 4% or 5% card for dining for the life of me.

    I was having such a hard time deciding and then I remembered that's what your channel is for haha. Definitely getting the Reserve, but have some questions.
    1. Does the AU get all the same benefits of the card and can the same benefit be used by more than one user? For example, AU and I both want to use the lyft benefit, whereas AU will be the only one using Doordash and Instacart benefit.
    2. Does that travel accident insurance replace regular travel insurance you would buy or should you still get it?
    3. Does Chase have a list of items that would count for the travel credit outside of airfare?
    4. What credit score would you recommend having to apply for the Reserve? My credit score is like 690 due to a high 0% interest balance with a high utilization, so I'm trying to see if I need to wait a couple months to pay that off before applying (although ideally I'd like to apply within the next couple of weeks since I have some big item spend to make soon).
    Thanks again!

      3. Here's a link to how Chase categorizes rewards categories, including travel: www.chase.com/personal/credit-cards/rewards-category-faq

    My issue with the Reserve is for big purchases you would loose out on points say if you use the Freedom flex. Say I want to buy a $2000 dollars TV, I would love to use the Flex and get 3000 points, but if you use the Reserve to prioritize purchase protection then you would only get 2000 points, so you need to factor that on your purchase decisions.

    If you’re thinking about going from Sapphire preferred to sapphire reserve, and you still carry the minimum $5000 limit credit on the preferred you have to go through a credit check and inquiry to obtain the minimum $10,000 for the reserve credit card. If not, then you cannot product change. If you’re chase sapphire preferred have at least a $10,000 credit limit given to you. Then you can product change to the reserve without a credit check.

      Hmm not sure about that. The Ritz-Carlton Credit Card has the same $10K requirement when upgrading from a lower-tier Marriott credit card.
      I was able to achieve that by transferring $5K from another Chase card. No credit check. No inquiry.
      That said, if you don't have $5K to transfer over, then you'll have to request a credit-limit increase. Historically, Chase has required a credit check / hard pull for those. However, more recently, that has changed.

    I have the Amex gold and blue preferred. I have the chase freedom unlimited and I’m thinking of getting rid of the blue preferred for the chase sapphire preferred. I believe the points stack correct? Wondering if this is a smart change

      Points from the Freedom Unlimited & Sapphire Preferred do stack. Only you can determine if it's a smart change based on your spending habits & rewards preferences.

    The portal is undeveloped for me to rationalize the CSR. No restaurants within 100 miles, Atlanta as a connection (favored over weather cancelling DFW/Denver) means Delta, and hit and miss Marriot opportunities keep me in the CSP realm. 3% CSP grocery solidifies the deal. CSR is simply to portal dependent and minimal lounge perks not worth the spend. Yes it has 1.5 but CSP is the better card.

    I have a request. Can you PLEASE break down WHAT purchases are included and excluded to qualify for the Chase welcome bonus points????? The site is pretty vague. I need to know my spending will justify the application. (Home and auto repairs, medical bills, etc)
    Thank You!!!! 🎉

    • @docsays
      @docsays 11 месяцев назад +1

      Chase is pretty liberal on the spend requirements for bonuses. Almost anything counts except cash advances or peer to peer payments

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  11 месяцев назад +3

      Thanks! I don't plan to include valid purchases vs. invalid purchases. That's because nearly all "regular purchases" are valid. Home repairs, medical bills, auto repairs, etc. are all fine.
      You can view all the exclusions in the offer terms, and they're nearly always the same for all cards.
      In the case for the CSP, "purchases" do not include: balance transfers, cash advances, travelers checks, foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers or similar cash-like transactions, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers or similar betting transactions, any checks that access your account, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, and fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable

  • @ItsMeCJ
    @ItsMeCJ 11 месяцев назад +1

    For me, my choice was and still is the CSP because I’m not traveling enough to desire lounge access and the better travel insurances. The $95/yr is perfect at my level. With that said, Chase needs to revamp these cards like yesterday! Their reward categories are generally weak and this needs to change. 🤦🏾‍♂️

      For earning points, yes. You'll earn 2X (CSP) or 3X (CSR).
