Apologies for the crackling sound, something seems to be wrong with my mic. This week we're looking at a Fortune Systems 32:16, with Digitran's "Golden Touch" capacitive Z-leaf switches. This board is a quite interesting look into the past, I hope you enjoy it :) .

The practice sentence was: "Hello my name is Thomas and I'm typing on a Fortune 32:16 keyboard right now. typing on this is quite the wobbly experience, but certainly not a bad one!" Наука

Finally, a keyboard for that old grandma who still plays Boggle.
"un-fortunate end" lol
Interesting keyboard and interesting switches, but the audio isn't faring that well.
Also whoever made you those converters must really like your reviews.
Let's hope that Thomas can find another one that works so he can do a redux video.
Ben's been a tremendous help; without him, a lot of these videos wouldn't've been possible.
Oh, is that a new outro screen I see? I'm liking it!
not gonna lie, that new outro startled me 😂
I love the new format, having the switch review first so I don't feel lost during the review. And it gives me something to look forward to
There's a bit of crackling going on in the audio :(
I hear it too
You are correct. I'm not sure what's causing it :( .
this is like the third channel I've heard somebody mention this on recently. Does your source audio have crackle?
@@Chyrosran22 Check voice recording path.
@@maidpretty ?? Sorry what does that mean? XD
The extra width to either side of the keys is very eye-catching. Great review!
I love that EXECUTE button, I'm sure that somebody in KGB or FSB has one.
Another cool old keyboard, and those systems looked awesome. Great new outro too.
Thank you for this review! Dat side profile look on 6:36 is awesome!
Great job as always Tom :-) A great pity it wasn't usable. Also I love the ending graphics.
This was the first computer I ever used. Great memories!
Running Xenix? Yikes! ;)
Did you use it at the console or a terminal?
So this is the z leaf keyboard you were talking about very nice.
Now *that* is a clacky keyboard. What beautiful music to my ears. Takes me back to when my dad took me into the office with him when I was just a tot.
New outro. Neat. :3
Ok, that ending surprised me. Looked cool. I'd suggest it was a bit loud coming right from the typing demo and all.
Hi Chyrosran, can you please give us a review of the bloody light strike switches? The new ones and the old ones too. I was watching your review of the best linear switches and saw that you have a unit. I would love if you could review them and compare them to other opto-mechanical switches. Great Videos, as always.
Cool outro!
Lovely keyboard
0:24 Marketing puns galore
1:50 Cue the early 1980's Computer Chronicles outro tune for this history lesson. LOL
Computer magazines back in the 1980s were full of decent, well-written, useful information. I paused the video on each page to read all the articles.
@@XalphYT I did as well, and computers back then were more esoteric than they are now
I really like the shape of that backspace keycap
I love retro 80s tech like this.
Holy switch...the sound make up for the wobble key
damn that outro is nice
7:50 About those blue keys:
Return keys? Check.
Execute key? Check.
LF GL key? Wait, what? Line Feed + GL.
What is a GL?
From what I can determine it either:
prohibits line breaks unicode.org/reports/tr14/#GL
or it's for switching between character sets www.columbia.edu/kermit/k95manual/iso2022.html
Line Feed and Good Luck
Very useful when you're not sure if it's gonna work
Sadly, no HF key
From the reference guide;
"LF GL
In applications that distinguish between a carriage return and line
feed operation, this key is used for line feed. In FOR:WORD word
processing, this key means "glossary." The LF GL key is located
next to the Return key grouped with the typewriter-like keys. "

Nice vid!
Notice how the video is close to, but still under 10 minutes? This is why we love your videos.
Why does that matter? XD
Chyrosran22 once watch time goes over 10 minutes, it doubles the revenue you get from the video.
Now he’s going...well shit 😜
@@jackfisher8966 and that's a bad thing because?
Achu- no, I wouldn’t mind if it went over 10 minutes. It just makes it clear that he’s not just in it for money.
The wobble on that thing is more wobbly than my uncle trying to walk in a straight line while drunk.
That's like when my uncle came to beat me.
Amazing
spacebar rattle notwithstanding, this thing sounds great!
I hope you could make a video about highly sought after holy panda switches. You’ve made HHKB so I think you could make one about HP’s.
Kailh box jade vs kailh box white vs blue alps comparison plz 🙏🏻
Would be very fun to bind the 'Execute' key to some game shortcut
Did you manage to get it working since then?
If it beeps when turned on (assuming the beep is controlled by the keyboard electronics and not the computer), that would tell me the electronics is still working and the issue could be some banal thing.
1:35 Would an ultrasonic bath be the solution for grimy springs?
Yes
Please dont chuck vintage keyboards in a dishwasher.
@@excitableboy7031 Oh oh..... looks at the dishwasher in which the beam spring is drying....
Just kidding :-)
nice a new video
Inbelievwobble !
what is that weird noise at some parts of the video?
also look at that outro
His mic has some problems
link to photos of the circuit board?
Any intentions of retrobrighting those caps?
What does the "execute" key do?
hey so i know you have the video in metric and the dumb system but what about also using Avoirdupois? i feel left out here.
Spirit of the old school lives only in contactless switches.
Review Silo Beam Spring keyboard!
Is the Silo out now?
boy oh boy do I love watching reviews of keyboards I will almost certainly never buy
How do they test key switch durability? Especially for 250 megaoperations. Just robot fingers pressing a switch 4 times a second for two years?
Pretty much exactly that, yes!
@@Chyrosran22 I know it's two years later, but, I must say, I rather like some of the idiosyncrasies of this keyboard, e.g. the keycap font, that vertical blue "EXECUTE" button, the particular "trapezoidal" shape of the keycaps and their rounded corners, etc. And I just learned that there is no universally accepted term for a three-dimensional trapezoid (I think that's "trapezium" in the King's English (?) 😂)
👍🏻
I love his digs at the imperial unit system. As an American, I hate our units but alas, they are what I have deal with as an engineer
Oh no. Engineering with imperial? Kill me now
I noticed there was a bit of static in the video. Is your mic acting up?
i want those arrow keys in modern keyboards
I'm allergic to cats, progress, and standardization
2.something inches? Hmm. Good thing I have a reference for that.
wow that other board was awful. Would be cool to see the before & after cleaning on all these boards you talk about having cleaned. :O
Why did they shape shift keys like that? What's the advantage of this? It really bothers me.
Lack of a proper stabilizer makes it so that they have to be struck in the center of the key. Thus only that part is raised to prevent binding.
@@br9809 ok, but spacebar is different, coudn't they use the same stabilizers as in space bar?
@@Diabl0pl nah, stabs back then where huge. The was no possibility putting them under a 2.75U or something like that
@@rabel1545
Alright, thanks for the answers :)
I think the board will look better if all secondary keys are blue or grey or something like that
what in god's name is the story behind the keyboard at 1:05
If you live in the US, then I recommend spraying this board down with the product called Spray Nine. Dangle the keyboard from one of the short ends and then watch as the grime runs right off the board. That stuff is amazing.
This is the first time the imperial units are even vaguely useful. Are you feeling alright chyros?
Imperial units are never useful :p .
Here's a lovely little photo (Polaroid?) of someone's full Fortune Systems 32:16 setup from 1983: imgur.com/9vQ8Hnx

"Golden Touch"
It's Midas's keyboard
Wow, this thing at the end//
„Upgrade now your golden touch with a golden shower“
The rattling is not worse then of the Razer Huntsman 😂
It seems you managed to piss a few people off with your imperial bashing this time 😆. To those affected: how on earth is a system where I have to remember different conversion factors for inches, feet, yards and miles better or more practical than one with uniform powers of ten (let's not even get into conversion between different units)?
first
or in imperial units: zero-th
I come here for the excellent reviews of fascinating old school boards, and stay for the fantastic jibes at that festering crock of shit that is the imperial system.
Your lough and the way you talk reminds me of zefrank1 😅
Funny to say but these keyboard look so same exterior and I sometimes don't know if I saw your video or not XD "pretentious vintage boards with beige color"
H
Is it sad that the first time I ever touched a mechanical keyboard was at Walmart 😢
Not at all. My first keyboard was the one on a Commodore VIC 20 :-)
wow i like this keyboard, it is almost pornographic
Lol...."non-stupid" measurements.... well as someone with experience with both systems both have their strengths and weaknesses. And while I'm sure SI being base-10 isn't your primary concern, there are advantages to other bases, too, besides matching up with the number of one's digits
“I’m not stupid” lol, good one! But it’s a far more practical system of measurements for the average human.
They are not :p .
I could understand why you think that, considering that you likely use the international measurement system a lot more than the imperial one. However, I have used both for many years of my life and believe that international is better for scientific uses, it’s not as good as the imperial system when it comes to practicality. The same applies with Fahrenheit(more practical) and Celsius(for science).
@@gorko1579 As someone else that has used both for much of their life (U.K), I tend to use Imperial for extremely coarse guesswork, e.g "it's about two foot long", "he was about 6 feet tall" etc. For anything which involves measurement I use metric, because why on earth wouldn't you, it has an absolute reference. As practical use involves measurement I would always use metric for practical (building, joinery, plumbing etc). For temps, Kelvin is scientific, as it has an absolute reference, I don't understand why anyone would use Fahrenheit in a base10 system unless it's an entrenched system (like in the U.S), as it has no sensible reference. At least Celsius has that reference relative to the natural three states of water and this magnitude made enough sense to continue into Kelvin. Fahrenheit basically pulled the scale out of his butt, like all nonsensical imperial measurement scales. The inconsistency in the U.K comes from our use of miles, which again appears to arise because it is an entrenched system. If Imperial wasn't an entrenched system for you, why would you think Imperial is more "practical"?
Tyrant Worm you’re right, I shouldn’t have implied it was only better for science. When I said practical, I was saying it’s better for guesswork when you don’t need to measure something. Kelvin is scientific and has an absolute reference yes, but Celsius is based of water making it used very frequently in scientific expriments.
@@gorko1579 I get this comment frequently, but I assure you a foot or pound is just as unrelatable to me as a metre or kilo is to you :p .
first
Standardisation of protocols and fiat currencies are not only regressive, rather than progressive, but are also an act of subjugation and oppression, because they are always manipulated to favour the dominant players. If your socialist primary school taught you that standardisation of units of measurement is progressive, then they should have also taught you that standardisation of language is progressive. As long as there's a proper definition that you can refer to, and it's convertible, it's fine. Standardisation of language shouldn't be confused with pissing people off by unnecessarily prolonging the time it takes for someone to understand your language/units, because you don't happen to speak the ones that are locally used. You should prepare for it beforehand (either learn it, or take the help of a translator, or get into an agreement where they speak your language). Local languages/units/cultures aren't standards, but you sure will piss people off if you waste their time.
At this point it's pretty much only the U.S which continues with usage of units of measurement which are a nonsense. I'm all for "when in Rome", but the standardisation of systems of measurement is not socio-political (as you seem to believe it to be). It has very clear practical benefits to us all in a world where we use goods produced elsewhere in the world, or made in collaboration with other global actors. Thomas is a scientist so it's pretty natural to ridicule a system which has no absolute definition. Unfortunately the layman in the U.S have partially bought this on themselves through the use of language like "freedom units", it's inevitable that people will point out that it's stupid to introduce a pointless abstraction layer.
@@tyrantworm7392 'Freedom units'? I hadn't heard that one, no doubt the measurement system of choice for anti vaxxers, flat Earthers, and people who think that face masks are oppression.
Speaking as a red blooded double fisted 'Murican man, I look forward to Tom's mockery of the Imperialism (heh heh heh) system as it deserves it.
