Buy All Quiet On The Western Front 4K: amzn.to/42Cmpb6
Just got my copy today from best buy and yes, the booklet was out just like yours it does not bother me can't wait to watch it.
Hopefully Netflix releases more of their content as physical release.
Was gonna say the same. Kudos to Netflix for putting it out. Pay attention Disney there's clearly money to be made
I think so. Since the subscriber numbers are either plateauing or sometimes going down they’ll want another revenue stream. I own a bunch of Netflix DVDs and Blu-ray’s and hopefully they’ll release more
I hope so too but I do wonder what the financial breakdown is such that this model of doing both is actually worth it for them (and streaming services in general)
What would most people say are the best things Netflix has ever made? I haven't had Netflix since the days of getting discs in the mail.
All steamers withhold or release on out of region blu rays to “ increase subscribers “ ....China is making barrels on cash.
I hope this opens the door for more Netflix originals on 4K.
The King please
@@kobyjones "OLD Guard"! "Extraction" was good...."6 Underground" was fun, in the vein of "Baby Driver"...."Whatever happened to Wedsnesday" is on 4k as well as "Gunpowder Milkshake" FYI So is "CODA", all are only overseas releases.
I want el Camino in 4k
I'd love to see some of their exclusive anime get a Blu-ray release. Specifically the stuff done by Teigger.
@@kobyjones Also Tiger King
😂"Throw that stream away"
I guess he flushed it?
I piss on streams
Streaming has it's place otherwise all the physical media collectors wouldn't have Netflix/ Disney etc etc.
We all different for me watched it twice had No issues and I won't buy it.
If I am buying summit then I make a point of not watching it on streaming. 🤔
Good on you, Jeff, for recommending watching films in their original language. Something all cinephiles should do!
@@GamezGuru1 I can only agree 😅
I watched Babylon on oled the first time by streaming and when I watched the 4K disc it looks so much better. It’s ridiculous how much better the resolution, grain structure and colors are on the disc.
It’s always nice when Netflix actually releases film of theirs on Blu-Ray and/or 4K Blu-Ray. Let’s hope they’ll release more in the near future.
I think the Netflix films that got limited theatrical release, such as All Quiet On The Western Front and Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio- are more likely to get physical releases!
This wasn't a Netflix release. It was just released on Netflix.
@@BigAlvideos101 I think they do limited theatrical release to count as a movie to make it eligible for awards
@@yol_n Maybe in the past they did, but nowadays we've had films that are 100% exclusive to Netflix or other streaming services that have won awards.
Was going to watch it before the oscars. But decided to wait once I saw it was going to have a physical release…! And I’m even more excited now that you gave it a great review..
I read the book back in high school and thought it was very good. I recently found a copy of the book in the sale room at my library, so I bought a Blu Ray of the 1930 version (which was also very good IMO), and I pre-ordered this version. So I am going to re-read the book, re-watch the 1930 version, and then watch this version.
It's quiet... too quiet.
The old version at the end is better and much nearer to the book in my opinion.
I notice this with many 4K movies. How they look better on disc than streaming services. The Marvel and Star Wars movies especially look better I think than they do on Disney +. Nothing in 4K on Netflix has blown me away.
Just ordered from the US. Way better than 1917 (baby faced clean faces throughout 1917). AQOTWF was gritty...intense and horrific. Thanks Jeff for the review!
Thing is 1917 apart from being WW1 was a totally different film and story.
Two guys with the story over less than a day.
Hardly the scope of AQOTWF, less grime etc.
But so pleased Lesley Paterson managed to get it made ( an epic story in itself ) and they decided to make it in German so much more authentic.
Great movie. It really commits to its anti-war message, unlike a lot of films that seem to tacitly glorify war.
I was thankful to have the chance to view the film in theaters after first streaming it on Netflix. The theatrical experience was such an improvement I mourned that we wouldn't be getting it on 4K. Now that we are getting the disc I won't ever stream it again.
Can't wait to get it. Ordering soon. Now we need THE KING on 4K.
Damn yes the King is one of the best Netflix Originals ever
Thank you as always for a full, well explained review. I have just ordered it and can't wait to watch it on my 11.2 system.
To be clear, the English voice version of the movie does not support Dolby Atmos?
I want the original 1930 All Quiet On The Western Front on 4K. I admit well probaly never get it for several reasons including orginal film stock in terrible condition, but I wish! A great adaptation of the 1929 novel, a timeless classic!
There is a Blu-ray of the the original version that says its "digitally remastered" and "fully restored", so make of that what you may. It's on my wish list.
I would like to see Netflix embrace what they use to be and expand on it by opening disc manufacturing plants for the Niche Physical Media collectors
How much would you pay, for Netflix to rent you a copy protected hard drive with the uncompressed file that they used to do the final edit (even 4k blu ray is compressed)? For example, the file might be encrypted and only play through their app, while your rental is authorized (easily added to modern 4k players/computers) or even a standalone device.
They could team up with Amazon to make use of their quick delivery/return services in every city (and build the ultimate content library as you could have the option of paying for Amazon access and/or Netflix access).
Netflix uses Dolby Vision Profile 5. 4k bluray discs use Dolby Vision Profile 7. There's a noticable difference between the two
I was pretty satisfied with 4K Netflix due to GB internet now I need this 4K to compare. It is a stunning film and I definitely agree the movie is better than 1917.
Having a 1+ Gbps internet service doesn't change the fact that the Netflix compression prevents the film from looking any better than a low-quality Blu-ray from 2007.
@@justinmadison513 def looks better to me due to my jump from very mediocre internet to GB but I can still tell it does not compare to a lot of 4K blu rays that have been released. 🤷♀️
@@magie2k6 unless ur speeds were below 20 it will look the same regardless Netflix caps 4K around 15 max 20 i think
@@justinmadison513 because low quality Blu-rays from 2007 had HDR. 🤣🤣
Some people come out with so much 💨💨
@@Gurminder_S Having HDR doesn't necessarily mean better.
There's plenty of movies and shows on streaming services with really poorly done HDR.
What ultimately matters is how good the compression algorithms are and how much data is being streamed per second.
It's verifiably true that Netflix streams their top movies and shows at a max bitrate of around 15-18 Mbps. That's lower than most standard Blu-rays that come out today.
I'd much rather watch a movie in SDR that's transferred well to the standard Blu-ray format than a 10 Mbps stream from Netflix with poorly done HDR.
15 Mbps just doesn't cut it for me.
I wish band of Brothers would get the 4k treatment!!!
Yeah, any Netflix title will be compressed Atmos (via Dolby Digital Plus), but you’ll get bit perfect, uncompressed Atmos (via Dolby True HD) on the 4K disc. A lot of people complained that they couldn’t even get Atmos while streaming, even in German. I did a video on the spectacular streaming experience of this film, but now I def need to pick this up on physical media. 🤘😎
I had this problem last week. It would only stream in Dolby 5.1 even though everything else on Netflix was streaming Atmos no problem.
Looking forward to buying this to get the full experience instead.
Thanks for the recommendation. I had the same experience with Top Gun. Initially streamed it because my daughter demanded it, 😉 but the sound especially on the 4K disc was much better.
Really want to watch this in 4k now! Hopefully I can get my hands on a 4k copy!
Daredevil and Streanger Things should land on 4K as well. Also Castelvania would be nice. From Disney I want The Mandalorian/Book of Boba Fett on 4K.
So glad. It's an incredible film but the netflix streaming quality was almost unwatchable.
Hey great video as always, what about the 1080p Bluray, recommended ? Don't have any 4K screen, 1080p DLP HD projector + HD TV😢
Waiting for your next reviews 👍🏼
I bought six copies just to support physical media! 😄
I am SO glad to see that the discs are in trays for this release and NOT the shoddy sleeves that scratch discs!
It’s amazing they made this honestly. I want “Wheelman” on a 4k release so badly…..
Hmm, if it had an English Dolby Atmos track I would consider it, but I don’t think it will, but please let me know if the movie eventually gets an English Dolby Atmos track, since I will then consider buying the 4K blue ray. Or buying it on digital…
Exactly.
Quick question now that Disney has been slowly getting back into physical media putting their movies on disk as well as on Disney plus would they have to go back into the vault to put song of the south on blu ray as well as 4k as well as releasing it on Disney plus in the us?
An absolutely gut-wrenching & visceral experience. This film was a better achievement in so many technical areas than any other film released this past year. The score was awesome & the cinematography in a league of its own so although I didn't agree with much of the winners at the Oscars this year, this film winning for those two categories was a no-brainer.
Thanks for the great recommendation on this 4k title. I will definitely get this one when it goes on sale. Looks like the price has already dropped in Amazon recently so no hurry for me!
I streamed it first and then bought it once it went on sale. Great film.
…will hurt your OCD…
must have been one of the funniest lines i ever heard on this channel…
it‘s also true i guess…
i‘ll add this into my rotation…
Hello-
i have a thing for films about WW I and this one was first rate first with A+ production values. but i was a tiny teeny bit disappointed
in one aspect of the film. for me what made the 1930 Best Picture winner a masterpiece was it expertly juxtaposed the non-war scenes with the war scenes and this film is virtually all war scenes.
Netflix and Disney+ in Australia look fantastic in HD and 4K respectively.
Thanks Jeff! I was gonna watch this on Netflix soon but after your review reckon I'll hold on and get the 4k disc sometime 👍🙏
Great recommend. Would love to see what you think of the Devotion 4k disk-another great war story that a lot of people skipped. It screened on Imax at TIFF this past year, which was a great way to see it.
Preordered a couple weeks ago already on a blind buy. I'm convinced I'll like it well enough to be worth it, even if it's just to soak in the cinematography
There were a lot of shots throughout the film in low-light that had a LOT of very noticeable grain or even noise in the image. I wonder if it was a faulty disc? It wasn't even consistant throughout a scene. The opening with the foxes had a lot. I have an OLED screen and good cables and I have it set to filmmaker mode. Are the scenes supposed to be like that or is there something wrong with my disc or system?
I think it depends on your connection speed, because this looked amazing on NF for me. The sound also was very good. Perhaps the physical release is better but it's still superb on a good streaming setup.
I do often feel the disc vs streaming conversations are very biased. I haven’t yet seen this disc, but the Netflix 4K stream with Dolby Vision and Atmos was pretty phenomenal. People regularly state “the disc BLOWS the stream out of the water” for most movies. Perhaps they don’t have a solid internet connection? I have a 65” LG OLED and Sonos Arc 5.1.4 system (with the new era 300 surrounds), and when I A/B test UHD discs vs an Apple 4K stream or a good Netflix stream, it’s honestly VERY hard to tell a difference in either picture or audio quality. I’m not saying there isn’t a difference … clearly you’re working with uncompressed via compressed with higher bitrate on physical media. I’m just saying that for most people and most films, you’re likely not to notice much of a difference, even when you’re looking for it.
@@iandeming First of all congrats on that system, I have similar but those new 300s are beasts. But I agree with you. There probably was a difference a few years back, but now the latest films and series on the big streamers look & sound exceptional. Good TVs certainly help with the quality and my Sony OLED does certain tricks to improve the image. I also have a Panasonic 820 4K player and a lot of 4K discs, so I have no skin in the game. But it's just a fact that there's hardly any difference in most cases. I have a fast hardwired internet connection and I'm sure that helps, but the truth is the streamers have caught up. Disney plus puts out their new films often in IMAX format and they look amazing. I'm happy to have both options but as Jeff repeatedly says streaming has won, and it has.
@@iandemingagreed. I’ve come across MANY claiming that standard Blu-ray is better than 4k steaming. Now I just know you’re full of it and making yourself feel better you have outdated formats.
Is the one available to pre-order on Amazon is the same like yours ... or it's a regular 4k Blu-ray?
The title is wrong: must be "The Kaisers Elite Troops" aka. Die "Kaiser und sein sturmtruppen". I Think.
Nice review and great movie indeed! And you are absolutely right. Don’t stream it but just watch the 4k Dolby Vision Blu-ray. I believe Netflix’s bitrate is about 16mbps (Streaming) while the disc uses scenes with 112mbps and arround 85mbos average. With TrueHD/Atmos 😎
no 112 mbps, max 100 mbps
Another great review! Thank you! I'm gonna have to search online for the best price now 💯 not super excited about the book/case especially since it didn't handle too good for your review BUT we mainly get these for the movies anyway 😏
Enjoyed the movie and wish I could have seen it on 4K instead of streaming. Not a movie I will likely revisit any time soon, whereas 1917 I will.
I have mine pre-ordered and on it's way!!!
Stupid question but why do they put blu ray disks with 4k disks? Btw great content
I plan on checking it out at some point. Makes sense on why it'd be better to watch on Physical.
I bought the stand alone 4k version, without the bluray. Regular box. This movie could be the best war movie of all time. You can watch the movie with the director explaining every scene in English. Cinematography is A+ Atmos sound A+ This movie is the greatest reminder of how stupid war is.
I waited to preorder until this video. Thanks Jeff!
☝🏼
My booklet came off entirely... I was sad until I watched your video.😂
That's all well and good it's better on the disk but $35? I just got all 3 Ape War movies for $18 and top tier name movies are selling $19-$25, and even Top Gun Maverick is less. I have unlimited patience and can wait until it's $14.99 which will happen.
Is the Blu ray disc region free? It's not mentioned anywhere on Amazon and so far the movie is not listed on Amazon Australia
Good to hear about the 4K release. I was not the biggest fan of the sections of the book the screenwriters chose to put in the movie. The camaraderie between the soldiers was basically rushed and largely absent in the movie. Leaving out Paul's trip back to his hometown while on R&R was also a poor choice IMO... the contrast of peacetime to wartime was weak because of this.
Eh, we've got to expect that modern releases of classic art will be dumbed down to whatever level attracts the most people. Just look at a bell curve and see where the money is -- it's in kicking people off of islands, and housewives with large behinds.
3:26 yeah streaming services usually give lossy 768 kbps atmos in dolby digital plus format. Not the lossless dolby truehd atmos.
I have question. Are the Opening/Ending credits, Title and anything else that's written on screen in German like on the Netflix version or in English for the American/UK physical release?
Saw this on Netflix. It was pretty good. Was this movie dubbed? Because it seemed like it was.
I did stream this movie in October!
I liked it so much I preordered the 4K!
I am a huge advocate of watching movies and series in their original languages.
What are the primary benefits that you perceive?
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 You get a better sense of the actors' performance.
@@bangslamwham88 Ah, a more unified performance, I suppose... instead of the inherent dis-integration of a voice-over.
I just preordered it on 4k coming this week
Amazing film, can’t wait to get 4k disc !
the score in this movie is memorable
I just order this movie last week thks great video
I watched in a discord screen share of a Netflix stream. Still looked and sounded great.
Great review! Look forward on picking this one up!
Das können wir Deutschen, Kriegsfilme unser Baby. Die UHD ist super geworden vom Bild und Ton.
Nach das Boot und Stalingrad, endlich wieder ein Film der Geschichte schreibt. Grüße
I'd love to see this in 4K in a giant screen in my own home theatre. However, there is a "little problem" of having the MONEY to do this.
Get a projector, and make your own screen. I assume you already have a useable speaker system. Perhaps start with a 1080P projector ($100-$200) and get your screen all constructed, mounted, adjusted and speaker placement perfected.
Step two is to work some overtime for a few weeks, or even get a night job for only a month or two. It's incredibly easy to earn enough extra money to buy an amazing 4K projector... you just have to CHOOSE to make it happen, instead of letting your dreams pass you by.
Mine was just delivered from Amazon
I can't wait to hear those awesome soundtrack tones from the beginning. It's going to rock the house! dun DUN dun!
Looks like a great movie to add to the collection, once it goes on sale!
You don't seem to have many Mediabooks in the US. It feels like this is the main packaging in germany since a few years. But it's the only way for the boutique labels to earn money with their releases. And I love them. I own about 300 of them!
Is there an english track on the physical media?
I just pre-ordered 4k blind buy!!
I need TWISTER in 4K ‼️
Would like to see the Adam Project from Nextflix get a 4k release.
i bought the media books of the concubine and the lover and the pages on both came torn and damaged cuase they separated just like yours jeff i didnt know cuase i didnt open the box for 2 weeks, was not home i will be buying this one too but check your package right away it happened to me twice
Damn I thought it looked phenomenal on Netflix I'll have to look for it
Just pre-ordered! Are you planning on looking at the Shout Factory 4k release of Dead Silence? It's a personal (guilty pleasure?) favorite of mine and I'm not sure about pulling the trigger to upgrade from my blu-ray.
I bet the 1080p Blu Ray version of this film is going to look better than Netflix.
Ordered!! It was great on Netflix, so I expect it to rock on 4K!
It is an impressive production, however, my disc freezes up just before the second "stealing from the farmer" scene.
Best WWI movie ever made??? That honor has to go to Paths of Glory imo
That’s a good one for sure. Like I said, maybe recency bias. But this movie is great.
Was about to say the same thing :)
I’m surprised this movie is even getting a 4K release, because Netflix only releases their originals physically if they’re mostly produced by external studios like Stranger Things and Cobra Kai, because they provided their budget, and Netflix only is just the distributor for those shows and movies!
It's actully an Amusement Park production, Netflix is the distributor.
@@christopherreddin5907 I know it’s a foreign production. But Netflix is reluctant to allow their original movies on 4K blu ray, because they still want their originals to be exclusive to Netflix. Even with Disney, they don’t release Disney+ originals like Mandolorian physically, streaming services only like their original content to stay exclusive. And only movies from particular studios get a Blu Ray release since they’re foreign!
@@Markimark151 They released Stranger Things on 4K Blu Ray.
@@christopherreddin5907 but it was a limited release and they stopped after the second season!
Is the Netflix stream English dubbed ?
Tbh I'm gonna wait for a sale. It's too expensive atm
4k in streaming and 4k in physical media is always different.
Back in the day, 'HD' cable TV service was basically youtube quality.
Looking forward to this jeff...excellent 👌 proper way of watching movies...as music vinyl the best...streaming just convenience...can't beat physical media ..better quality on high end gear..gazz
Aniyone know how to get the subtitles less so annoyingly contrasty?
What's a handful of the best content that Netflix has ever produced? I haven't used their service since the early 2000s.
That ending really pissed me off, and im screaming like an idiot directy to the TV lol !
Hey Jeff, just wondering which exact SVS speakers and sub do you have? And others have said, $35 bones is too steep, especially for a movie that they're making me read. Not sure if I enjoy reading in Atmos. Anyway, I'd rather pay $25 and have them keep the book.
This thing is $60 god damn dollars in Canada! Wish I knew this was getting a 4k release before I streamed it. One of the best films I've seen in a while.
It's on sale right now along with the Steelbook on Amazon
The disc is over $30 and I already pay for $20 for Netflix every month
I am a huge fan of war movies. Love a lot of them. Like most of them. Don't care for a few. All Quiet On The Western Front falls squarely into the latter bucket. So difficult to watch. Had to force myself to get through it.
I cancelled my Netflix for two reasons: the quality programming is few and far between and the compression is distracting, but I managed to watch this before cancelling and thought it was solid. A recommend watch if you like your war films a bit more contemplative.
The bluray is region A or ABC??
I’ve been saying it for years. Physical media looks better and sounds way better than streaming. Don’t stop buying physical media folks
