- Next up in our fly fishing knots series is the two turn water knot, the only dropper knot you need!
This is the only dropper knot that you will ever need to learn. The two turn water knot, also know as the surgeons knot is simple and quick to tie. It has a very high breaking point and perfect for attaching flies to your tippet on droppers. Спорт
Been using this dropper method for almost 30 years. I was shown it by a brilliant angler who sadly doesn't fly fish anymore due to ill health
That was fantastic. I understand the knot, couldn’t wrap my head around using it for a dropper. It all finally makes sense. Thank you!
Been using the triple surgeons knot for years for droppers. Good method.
Well explained as I'm new to fly fishing and have been worries about this knot for a while but this looks nice and easy thank you
That will save money on pre-tied leaders. Many thanks for the clear explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
I wish I had seen this 50 years ago.
Great knot makes life easier 👌 cheers
Plain and simple, thank you 👍
Thankyou Michael! 👌
I use it all the time 🐟🎣
Thank you so much very easy
Very strong knot. Nice video👏
Thanks Graeme :)
Thank you !
Spot on.
Add a half hitch to prevent tangles...
great, thanks
I just make a loop in the main leader wrap it around itself twice the snip next to the knot gives me my dropper
simple and clear thanks
Lightbulb video!! Always used this when stepping down leaders, but never thought to use a short piece of dropper on a continuous level leader - how slow was I?
Brilliant. 😂
we used 50lb braid with top 30lb pink coral conected to red hook to bottom fishing rockfish. we caught many fish with no problem.
Love to hear that!!!
Do you tie upline or downline? Ive forgot how many times ive ended up with the dropper wrapped around the line that goes to the tip fly
Great but what happens when after tying on a few flies the dropper becomes too short to tie on another fly? Simply snip the dropper line off, leaving the knot still on the tippet. Tie another piece of tippet material onto the line "above" the knot using a clinch knot. Slide this down to the knot and then cut off at the length of dropper that you want.
Done that b.fore
Or use a Davey knot- which is smaller, stronger and easier to tie
Will adding more turns increase knot strength or is it strong enough with just 2 turns?
We’ve found the difference in strength to be negligible to be honest. Two turns, more time fishing :)
Orvis Tippet Knot has replaced the double surgeon's knot. Why? 1) Stronger 2) The dropper is closer to 90% 3) I can tell which part of the dropper is to be cut if I am tying a dropper knot with one piece of tippet to save time.
Any advice for this knot I use this method all the time with droppers but 50% off the time if i have a fish take my dropper i get snapped right at the dropper knot ? Any advice to stop this ?
Is this a double surgeons knot?
I would have thought having the knot facing the other way, with the dropper tag going back up the main line would work better?
Then as you strip line in, it keeps the dropper clear of your line because of the bend in the dropper line.
The tag facing up is more prone to breaking
Hi I get a lot of line twists leading to tangles with the droppers (buzzers). I use 8lb stroft GTM. Can anyone help or suggest if there is a more stiff line?
What's the best knot for tying your fly to your leader for trout and salmon flies?
ruclips.net/video/C61GnmBe5tw/видео.html
We find this one to be the most effective. There are many knots for many different purposes/fly styles. This one works 90% of the time
I have a question. Supposing you are fishing and you get a tangle on a dropper and want to quickly cut off and retie a dropper, what knot do you recommend for this?
Best way is to cut at the tangle then add a new section. We try to avoid unnecessary knots on the line as much as possible
@@AnglingScotland The whole point of your video was that there was no separate sections and one line top to bottom, do you use a variant of the above knot to fill in the missing section or just do something different?
No, it’s the same knot either way. If you snap or have a tangle but there’s enough left, simply add the length you need down to your point fly. The tag end becomes the dropper.
Or simply replace with a new tippet section
@@AnglingScotland ah, makes sense, thanks for that will give it a go.
No worries, you’ve given us an idea for a video though. What to do if I snap my dropper rig :)
Mmm does that have your dropper lying at an angle as opposed to two tucked blood knots which has your dropper at 90 degrees. Good vid though 😀🏴
Perhaps, slightly. We’ve tried both ways and this catches fish and takes 10% of the time to tie.
Is there another knot you can add to make the dropper stick out more and avoid it wrapping itself around the main leader?
Some people like to drop a half hitch in after the knot has been tied. We’ve never really found it to be an issue
I add overhand not below water knot .helps me
Hi, can someone tell me skat the max length a dropper should be
6 - 7 inches
yeah its called a surgeons knot... and pull it through three times
😂 😂 two turns works just fine. Known as both water knot or surgeons knots. Thanks for watching 😉
Much easier way than that mate
you sure those are your hands?
😂😂😂
This is a doubles surgeons knot though isn't it?
What’s the difference?
Video was over twice the length it needed to be.
Thanks for watching
Are all you guys across the pond huffing the same tube of glue? That's called a double surgeons knot and has been around since Christ was a cowboy. Quick trying to re invent the wheel with a more difficult way to perform a simple knot. Use two or three overhand knots with both tag lines and voila. You're welcome
😂😂😂😂
Blink, mate.
😳😳😳😳😂
Sorry maties, but this knot wraps around the line far too easily to be worthy. It is frustrating to see your droppers wrapped after only a few casts. Orvis knot is much better.
