Tales of Legendia is a an RPG for PlayStation 2 developed by Project MelFes at Namco. It was first released to Japan in 2005 and hit Western shores in 2006.

How the FUCK did you finish this game in 60 hours. The encounter rate is fucking insane!! I'm 80+ hours and have just resorted to running from every battle for the end of Jay's and through the entirety of Grune's quest.
I can fight a momster, take a step and be fighting again. WTF?!?!

Legendia is also my favorite Tales game. I still cry at some of the songs. I have played it so many times over the years.
I think my first playthrough was over 200+ hours? It's been a few years since I lasted looked at how long I play on average.
@@freepaper100 Well the OST at least is flawless. Perhaps the only truly remarkable ost of the entire series, very unique, the best of Go Shiina. Not a huge fan of the game itself though, even if it's decent.
My favorite Tales game. The chemistry between the characters, the music, the artistic direction were just perfect. The fighting wasn’t as refined as the other games but button mashing is funny anyway.
Yeah i actually really like the ingame artstyle. Its pretty jarring next to the official art, like Samurai Champloo artist on the cover but then I'm greeted with cute chibis lol. Still, its very appealing and characters are enjoyable
This one is massively underrated. This and Graces f are so underappreciated.
Lengendia needs a full remake. All Bandai has to do make the game look as good as berseria and make a LOT of improvements.

Much as i love this current artstyle, im hesitant to say it's what i wamt a Legendia remake to look like. Mostly cause i find the chibi look ot already has so charming lol. I think though,it'd be best to try and translate the official art it already has into 3d. Its the same artist as Samurai Champloo, which might have a game or 2 out there so maybe they can look to those as example
Honestly, no thanks. Usually a remake is warranted for a game that was held back by the technology of the time while Legendia's worst feature is the writing and story itself. Mechanically it was fine. Not great but fine. The writing though is terrible. Just awkward attepmpt after awkward attempt at humor.
Tales of Legendia is the game that got me into the Tales of Series. I only judged it from the cover and thought it looked cool and I was very little at the time.. I was like "Oh dude he has white hair! 😳 " Yeah and my parents bought it..and I'm so happy I got to play it. I hope they remake this one or remaster it. I think this game is a hidden gem and gets a little too much flak for what it was. The music is supreme in this game too.
The comedy was on point..and the characters are so different to what we see in like 2010s+, everyone looks so normal in a sense...?
Yeah if they could, fix the character stories into the main game and give people mystic artes..but man don't get me started on Moses' character story.. 😔😭😭
If they remade Legendia and somehow combined the character quests into the main story + cut down on the backtracking, it could be an amazing game.

I disagree with a lot you said about ToL, but I understand why it might not be for everyone. It's very different from the other's both story structure and graphics. I feel its more of a game for the fans who wanted more of a relaxing and fun interaction with all the characters after the main event. The character quests definitely delivered that, for me at least.
(Will is the best though, sorry but that's just fact)

It’s really disheartening to see people talk down about Legendia for me but I respect your opinions on it and I’m at least happy to see it acknowledged for once. I actually found the encounter rate to be quite bearable. There’s plenty of games out there with much worse encounter rates. I personally loved the characters, the soundtrack (even though everyone seems to love that) and even the combat despite being more barebones than other titles. The only Tales game that I could say I love as much as Legendia is Hearts R, and that’s because of the combat alone.
Funny how you don't recommend legendia as a first tales game to play when in fact it was my first ever Tales game. Abyss though is my favorite and first one I finished. And I think legendia has a unique charm to it and the Japanese op is by far in my top 5 tales openings

Such a weird game... my second-ever "Tales of..." (after Symphonia), I couldn't make up my mind whether or not I liked it for the entire play though. Like you pointed out, the structure of the story was very odd... the character quests, the slowly-backtracking through the SAME dungeons over and over again. The relatively tiny world, a single town. The basic battle system. Kind of a let-down after Symphonia.
I remember thinking the early part of the character quests section was fun... it wasn't often that we'd get to see our characters having "down time" like that.
I remember when the Wii came out, there was a rumor this was going to get a sequel called Sword of Legendia. Wonder if there was any truth to that?
That's the first I've heard of a sequel, but Legendia would be a good candidate for a remake. They could integrate the character quests into the main story, add Mystic artes and a few more combo options, and it could be a decent Tales game.

This was my first Tales of game, so it will always have a special place in my heart. I also wasn’t aware that this was a series when I was a kid, so I had no clue that this was one of the least liked Tales game
legendia, symphonia, abyss, xillia were my favorites though it was also peak/core childhood for me so may be more of a nostalgic factor

It was my first Tales game. 😂 But I agree with you. I wouldn’t recommend it, either, but I wouldn’t tell someone not to play it. It was charming enough to me to get me interested in the rest of the series.
I loved Legendia so much as a kid, I played through the whole thing several times, but I just haven't been able to bring myself to play it as an adult because I just know it won't hold up :(
Best OST ever
I fucking love it. Probably because I played it as a kid after TOS and before TOA. Goshiina/mashiinago really let themselves go with the soundtrack. They're so good they now compose for Demon Slayer anime.
There are also some character hacks that can give you infinite combos.
What happened was they made the best game in the series.
It was my first Tales game so I have a love hate deal with it but good review.

The OST of Legendia remains the most remarkable of the entire franchise though. That's the only thing I really couldn't criticize at all in that game, the music is beyond amazing. Go Shiina's best work by far.

I remember playing Grune's character quest running from every enemy encounter as I just wanted to get the game done and over with.
I would certainly love a remake though as there are a lot of things that could be improved like voice acting for the entire game and not just roughly half of it!

As someone who came into Legendia playing the series in order its not THAT bad. For instance random encounter have always been high in the old school Tales games. Sure its the weakest of the 6th Gen Tales games but I personally think its better than all previous gen games. While I never got into the chracter quests the orignal game was alright. The comedy is what really kept me going.
I think we're on the same wavelength. It's not outright bad, just weak compared to other Tales games I've played. Also, I don't mind the encounter rate, it's more that you have to repeat every dungeon twice to complete the full game.
The character quests _are_ part of the original game. I'm not surprised you think more highly of it if you didn't play them. Legendia's biggest problem is its structure-had I not done the character quests, I would have liked it a lot more, though I'd wonder why the characterization was so thin.
I haven't played any of the pre-Symphonia games yet, so I can't compare to those. (Tales of Phantasia will be my next Tales retrospective, though!)

As much as I regard Legendia having the best music, best and funniest cast, those are insignificant when the gameplay is horrible. I just spam 1-2 arts from Jay or Moses for mobs and 1-2 arts from Senel or Chloe for bosses.
PS: Has the best mascot. Those otter-like creatures are smart, arguably cute, talented, and useful.
10:55 ........y'know I never considered. Maybe it WOULD have been recieved better if on a handheld? I mean Abyss was a ps2 tales ported to 3ds, Legendia could've gotten that and maybe a new audience could find appreciation for it on handheld. Or like... They could just port it at all lol. Despite many a Tales fan's opinion, I do wanna really play this one. I can at least say i do very much enjoy the characters, and I wanna try the battle system. Seen some insane combo action here on RUclips and its a very unique one for the series. Also the OST is top 3 in the series, no question
The best thing about this game was playing as Senel Coolidge. I love martial arts characters like Law in Tales of Arise. Between Tales of Symphonia, Legendia, Vesperia, Abyss, Berseria, and Arise, I still prefer Tales of Vesperia.

I loved Jay and walter and senel and cosplayed 2.3 of them.
I think Legendia you need to treat it like legegends of kora.

Its hard to believe that a dev that created SYMPHONIA made a game like this then released TALES OF THE ABYSS...
...maybe it's because Tales of Legendia was made by a different team?

I watched a retrospective on ToL and the apparently the developers of that game made Tekken do what you will with that info lol

After all these years, I still don't understand why many many many people hated Legendia. The only annoying and hateful thing that I found about this game is that there are no more voiced skits in the Characters Quest part for the English version.
For all of it's fault, I prefer Legendia over Abyss, which has more problems than most people would like to admit.
To me, bad Tales games are Dawn of the New World (a.k.a. Knight of Ratatosk) and Tales of VS (it should've been titled Tales of BS instead).

Thats a fair point, but also tales of games had not the Budget of triple A games. Only arise had this After beseria was such a major success.
But if u played final fantasy 7, 8 and 9, my work here is allready done and u experienced peak jrpg gaming. Wouöd have been sad if no voice acting would stop u from playing those gems. 😜

Best Tales game by far.
I feel like the game is way overhated.
Its story is charming, the characters are funny and have a great dynamic, the graphical detail is amazing (for PS2 standards, at least), and, dare I say, I think the gameplay is a lot of fun, even if it lacks Mystic Artes. For a first game from a team that didn't know how a Tales game worked, I'm actually impressed.
I am mixed about the random encounters, dungeons, and the ost, though.
I don't necessarily hate random encounters, I just hate high encounter rates. Tales of Legendia's encounter rate is fairly high, though definitely not Skies of Arcadia Dreamcast high (god, that encounter rate was annoying). I do feel like it's a step back given that Tales of Symphonia didn't have random encounters
The dungeons are well designed, but some take forever thanks to the random encounters or are easy to get lost in.
The soundtrack... well, this is definitely a controversial opinion as a Tales game, but... I don't think it has the best Tales OST. Don't get me wrong, the soundtrack is overall really good, but I feel like Go Shiina's style just doesn't fit a fantasy RPG that well. And before you say I hate Go Shiina as a composer, I'll let you know I think his God Eater OSTs are awesome and fits that game series really well. There are three tracks that I absolutely despise: The Birds Chirp, I Sing, Chasing Shirley, and Battle Artist. Oh and the OST versions of Battle Artist and Seeking Victory.
Battle Artist, at least the game version, is a good battle theme, but does it need to be the only normal battle theme for the entire game? This is a 45+ hour RPG we're talking about and it gets old hearing it for every battle. I'm just glad it's not the OST version, which has a crappy electronic hi-hat.
I like the game version of Seeking Victory, but the OST version is poopy. That's all I'll say
Chasing Shirley... goddamn Chasing Shirley... Ok, as a musical track, it's fine with an amazing fiddle. But does it have to play 7 times in the entire main story? Also, it's apparently a dungeon theme during the Character Quests. Thanks guys for making me go insane.
The worst of the worst is definitely The Birds Chirp, I Sing. I have to say this is the worst piece of music I've ever heard. Like, why is there Afrikaans-like chanting in a game based on Western European mythology? It just seems so out of place. Sad thing is, I like its instrumental, Tomorrow Will Surely Be Sunny, way more.
Now, as I said, I don't think it has a bad soundtrack, but I do consider it one of the weaker soundtracks in Tales. But of course that's just me.
I guess there's no accounting for taste, cuz I love all the tracks you mentioned, hahah. Thanks for sharing your opinion, though; I love hearing what people think of the games I cover.
@@rpg_haven as I said, I just don't think Go Shiina's style of using a lot of artificial instruments and autotune fits a fantasy-themed RPG. It does, however, fit a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk hunting game. (seriously his tracks for God Eater work so well)
