When I was a kid in the mid '70s, there was a tornado warning for my town... my dad, being NOT a genius, decided our best option was to get in the car and try driving away from the path of the tornado. So he told us kids to get in the station wagon while he and my mom grabbed a couple things. Mom grabbed some photo albums and paperwork, dad grabbed his stereo system, including a huge pair of JBL CL45 Flair speakers he'd just bought. Crazy times. Oh, and the tornado skirted past the town instead of through it. We watched it from the car. Until I was in my mid teens, this all seemed like a perfectly logical thing to do.

I have the Yamaha 801. A poor man’s SU-G700. Before I bought it, I had the same long stares, late night scrolling, wake up at 330am in cold sweats desire for a full-sized, silver faced beast of an amp. I wanted the bacon-wrapped filet A-S2200, but succumbed to my bologna budget A-S801. I learned an important life lesson: Get the amp with the largest meters, or ANY meters, or face a lifetime of regret…

I bought one of these (Mk 1) used. Best audio purchase I've made, hands down. It's the most transparent amp I've ever had. When I say transparent, I mean that I feel like I'm only hearing the speakers, not the upstream equipment. I buy/sell equipment like I run a pawn shop, but I can say that nothing (aside from it's big brother, the SU-R1000) will ever make me consider selling this thing.

Now naturally, when you’re investing in premium components, the manufacturer will likely have factored in, it’s looks. But that should not be priority, or where the big money has gone.

@@UnitedStatesofAnalog Man, we have pretty similar thoughts and tastes. I looked at the MoFi phono preamp along with the StudioDeck but ended up buying the Marantz TT-15 S1 and an iFi Zen Phono. I later went on a brief phono preamp safari and tried some more expensive gear but ended up going back to the iFi.
I’ve concluded that most new pressings - even most of the audiophile ones - are pretty noisy with lots of quality control issues. Well-maintained vintage records (early 80’s and older) are the way to go, but I like new music, so I don’t see a lot of value in going much beyond what I have for vinyl playback at this point.
I actually bought an old Technics SL-7 linear tracking turntable and installed a new old stock Audio Technica cartridge that I inherited from my dad and that has become my go-to. I can’t remember the model off the top of my head, but apparently the cartridge has a boron cantilever and is pretty desirable. All I know is it sounds WAY better than the $1,100 Clearaudio Virtuoso cartridge that came with my Marantz. It’s pretty killer and SO simple to use!

There's no such thing as a digital amplifier. Its a marketing term. Some class D amps use no digital technology at all, while others do. Either way, the signal you hear never gets converted to digital. Its analog from start to finish. The class D amps that use digital technology, taps the analog signal as it enters the amp, converts it to digital, and uses that digital signal to control the output transistors.
The reason class D has become popular is because there are some benefits as to how it works. Solid state amps use transistors to amplity the signal. The problem with transistors is a transistor is a switch, as opposed to something tubes, which are valves. Switches like to be turned on and off. Class A, AB, etc.. run the transistors somewhere between on and off. This is inefficient and generates a lor of heat. That's why other types of amps are big and heavy. They need things like large heat sinks to dissipate control the excess heat generated by the transistors. Class D amps don't have this problem. Instead of running the transistors partially open all the time, they use the signal that was tapped of the input to turn the transistors on and off really fast. This reduces the heat buildup to almost nothing, and is why most class D amps are small, light, and generate a lot of power.
The reason so many people reject class D amps is because they didn't have the sound quality of other designs. Over the years, they have been getting better and better. The sound quality of newer class D amps are much better than the old ones.
Not to confuse anyone, I'm talking about power amps. An integrated amp has a preamp section and a power amp section, al in one box. I know the unit in the video converts the incoming analog signals to digital. That's not what I'm talking about hear. Before the signal leaves the preamp, it has to be converted back to analog in order for the power amp to use it.

Thanks for all that good information!!! I will dig in deeper to what you are talking about! I didn't see and reference to Class D in any of Technics literature. But I understand marketing. They are just being clever. They called it digital so I did to. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to further inform me! All the best!

@@UnitedStatesofAnalogIt is class D. I checked before I posted my reply.
" Under the hood, it's a state-of-the-art Class D amplifier with digital and analog inputs, including a versatile dedicated phono input."
      It was on Crutchfield's website.

Does that mean there is no need for an external DAC? Would an external DAC make any difference in sound?

@@josealbuquerque6090 an external DAC won't make any difference, every incoming signal is converted into digital, even from a turntabel

Yes, it's a Class D amp but who cares if it sounds good. I think too much is made over the class of amps. The problem with the VU meters for me is the same as those on my Yamaha A-S3200 integrated amp, which is that they look classy up close but the needles are so fine I can't really see them from any distance. And after all that's the whole point of having rather useless bling.

Fair enough! Technics doesn't use class D in any lit for this amp. Marketing!!!

$3000 and has less power than my $300 BasX (on sale). Does it sound better? No. Is it's dac better than my $110 Sanskrit 2? No. So the VU meter cost $2400. But I agree, it looks nice. My Marantz SR7500 looks nice as well. I prefer to put the lion share of my fun money into motorcycles.

If you think it sounds better, it would be helpful if you listed the other components in the system you used to make the comparison.
