Just posted a follow-up from this morning - Gabby seems to be giving a pop quiz and yes, Legacy learned quite a lot! :D ruclips.net/video/HnL3gNJcrMs/видео.html
Thank you! Gabby was amazing. I always hesitate to attribute motivations to other species, but after watching her do it more than once - and then stop doing it once Legacy passed the "pop quiz" to Gabby's satisfaction - I was more than ever convinced that somehow her instincts told her to get that only-eaglet tuned up for competition.
The singletons have such a different experience in the nest than pairs and triplets. It is up to the parents to give them a sense of competing for food.
Yes exactly and how wonderful to have another window into that process with Legacy. This is only Gabby's second season as a mom and her 1st with an "only child" - she's done a marvelous job so far. We know they have powerful instincts that guide them, but it's fun to speculate how their own memories of growing up might contribute as well. I'd love to have seen Gabby as an eaglet and fledgling and juvie, she must have been quite something for her own parents (and sibling if any) to deal with! :D
@@cmitchell8106 When I was watching this I was thinking the exact same thing. This is only Gabby’s second time of being a Mom and she is indeed doing a great job! But then I thought back to when she was A2, a very young female trying to step in as a “surrogate” with Sampson’s egg, so motherhood must be strongly ingrained in Gabby. ☺️ Love your videos with the commentaries, and will now ask a question....are you an eagle whisperer, or were you an eagle in another life?? 😁🦅❤️
@@lindagsmith3702 Just a long-time eagle-cam viewer. :D And yes when we only knew her as A2 that gal had something very special about her! What an amazing turn of events that all was, from heartbreak to new life.
aw legacy is maddddd i could just sh-----..... but just to funny best video ever you putting the words in with the pictures just awesome....good momma good job momma.....lmao
That video was darling. It was my best BULOL today. You go mom. I read that eagles in general are opportunistic and resourceful. I thought she was going to take it as a part of lesson... but no, she was just gonna get full on his scraps left behind while he was selfish and simultaneously hiding what he had. 😲Team work makes the dream work so hopefully gabby and legoom actually has that learning moment In a multi clutch it seems more quality time and so you have t better lift lessons. In a single egg clutch, it could be a rewarding experience to have more time for practice and get set in good time. Really I think it went really well and ready to go. M The
Glad you enjoyed it! We can never know what they're really thinking, but watching her do it several times it sure does seem like a teaching exercise. She has done the same thing with Jasper and Rocket this season and they also learned not to dawdle and play with their food! "Eat it or lose it, kids!" 😄
LOL I have a feeling that Gabby was just the same as an eaglet herself - I can imagine her parents telling her "just wait until you have kids and you'll see what I went through!" :D
There's no way to know for sure but it's such interesting behavior - if it was just stealing by the parent, why wait and watch patiently for half an hour? It's like a teacher timing a test and then saying ok time's up, turn in your test papers! I've got a second video from 2 days later showing that same pattern of waiting and watching for half an hour and then calling "time" - but with different results as Legacy seems to have learned quite a lot from the first lesson! ruclips.net/video/HnL3gNJcrMs/видео.html
I'm still really new at the eagle cams. Can anyone give me a fast lesson on this pair. Sorry but spent time with Jackie and Shadow but almost none with these two. Thank you.
Happy to! This nest has been observed since 2008 and has had a cam since the 2013 - 2014 season. Romeo and Juliet were the original pair - they successfully fledged 19 eaglets. November 2018 Juliet laid her usual 2 eggs but just before Christmas she disappeared. A young female, designated A2, appeared at the nest and actually tried to help Romeo incubate his eggs, but she was too young and inexperienced and, well, she wasn't Juliet. Romeo abandoned the nest shortly after Christmas. We hope that he went to find his Juliet. In January 2019 a young male claimed the empty nest as his own - and it's believed from some unique characteristics that he is an offspring of Romeo and Juliet! ID link: tinyurl.com/2s4ebzfd Beautiful young A2 was still around, and as it became clear that Samson and A2 were bonding and planned to stay she was given the name Gabrielle. Great summary video of the 2018 - 2019 events and the beginning of our current pair's relationship here: ruclips.net/video/0XtDmxPH_GM/видео.html They raised 2 eaglets in 2020, Romy and Jules (named in honor of Romeo & Juliet) and the solo eaglet Legacy in this video last year. They've got quite a lively, healthy pair growing up quickly this season! It has been amazing to watch a young couple go from the very earliest days of getting acquainted and choosing each other to becoming 1st-time parents and now in their 3rd eaglet-season behaving as old pros at the parenting job.
We can't see inside their heads of course, but what struck me is that Gabby is bigger, stronger, faster, and more experienced, and if she simply wanted the fish she could have taken it away instantly. (We'd seen her do that with Samson many times.) She waited and watched for a long time, and then made her move. It's always speculative when we attribute motives to animals who can't talk and tell us if we're right, but it feels right, especially combined with the follow-up a few days later: ruclips.net/video/HnL3gNJcrMs/видео.htmlsi=vH34wuzhU9EbAwZr Again in this video Gabby could take the fish away instantly if she wanted it, but she waits until Legacy's attention starts to wander - and then she gives up quickly when Legacy demonstrates that the lesson about fighting back to keep your own food has been well-learned! Gabby seemed to be satisfied that Legacy had graduatted from her "fight for your food class" with a good grade, and I didn't see her repeat the behavior.
Gabby laid 2 eggs in the 2021 season, but the other egg never hatched. It happens sometimes - eggs can be unfertilized, or something goes amiss during development. The unhatched egg was eventually covered up with nest material as the eagles came and went in the nest. Legacy did fine as an "only" with Gabby supplying the lessons! 🙂 (Both of Gabby's eggs hatched this season and two healthy, vigorous eaglets fledged successfully.)
I'd call it more of a preview than a punishment - "You'll be on your own soon and there will always be someone as hungry as you to compete with - guard your food and fill your crop quickly!" :)
Two years later and i still get a kick out of seeing Gabby swoop in and take the food from Legacy 😂😂
Baby girl.....momma knows best! Great job mom!
I love the high pitch fast chirp she does when she's angry. I hope she learned her lesson.

Her wings were all bristled up, too, lol 😂 Hissy fit results in lesson learned!
This is one of my TOP FAVORITE VIDEOS OF ALL TIME!!!

Thanks for the great video. The subtitles were hilarious, and it was neat seeing the action from several different camera angles.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I told you to clean up the nest now I am gonna do it for you. Great lesson for Legacy by mom.

Very nice video demonstrating a most important lesson. Love your subtitles and narrative also. 🦅💜🦅♥️😊
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
LOLOLOL Listen at the end, the chittering! Legacy was pissed!
those "rolling" chirps toward the end are precious. That last caption was perfect. And I thought you were going to say "spit" LOL
What a great lesson! No acting like a spoiled brat in this house!!
😂😂😂❤️❤️ Exactly the same situation when you have only one child at home! 🤣🤣🤣
This was like watching a flashback between Harriet & E9. But a very important lesson for survival. Trust the eagles.
That was the best video! Legacy is very spoiled. I don't think she will be leaving the nest anytime soon
She has the cutest temper tantrums.
Legs certainly seems to be having a temper tantrum! 😂
Omg, how hilarious you add libbed that ending, I love it ! Great job on all counts.
LOL Mom teaches and Legacy chittering her fussing at her.
Such beautiful birds
Great video 💖💖

Glad you enjoyed it!
Loved the close-ups of S & G!
We are so lucky to have fantastic cam-ops at this nest! :)
Great video, thank you !😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh my our little Legs got a little sassy with mommy. Poor baby 🐥
🐥🦅 Those were precious moments! I laughed so hard! Thank you for this memory! 💞😹😂
What majestic birds; it is little wonder why the US adopted them as their national bird.
Majestic my arse
Funny, and adorable!! 💗The subtitles are hilarious!!!😅

Awesome!!!
Poor baby imagine just being stuck in that nest until food arrives, no going down to the kitchen for a quick bite
Legacy is sassy. Mom puts up with a surprising amount.
LOL I have a feeling that Gabby was just the same as an eaglet herself - I can imagine her parents telling her "just wait until you have kids and you'll see what I went through!" :D
How many times do I have to tell you to clean up after you are done eating ❓
Legacy’s sounds are amazing. What a great display of camera work! Thanks so much for the great video. Is Samson really teaching Legacy you think?

Well ur Mama showed u !!!.Boy Legacy was pretty 😡.
Somethings wrong with this bird. Why is the bird always with the head down
All normal positioning for a youngster. :)
Sassy little thing isn’t she. It must be a she they said that she’s have higher developed vocal cords.
